So apparently male Ceratonoths literally turn themselves into lightning rods to protect the females of the herd.

Ceratonoth Herbivore & Dalthydon Herbivore
Ceratonoth males protect surrounding females of their species from lightning by catching lightning strikes with the well-developed dorsal horns on their backs and releasing them to the ground. They form large herds with the male Ceratonoth at the center.
Dalthydon, herbivorous wyvern changes its habitat depending on the season. When it senses danger, it will sometimes take a defensive posture and fight back with its well-developed head shell.

Ecology Entry - Windward Plains - Ceratonoths and Nothpeckers
One of the most common animals found in the Windward Plains are the herbivorous small monsters, Ceratonoths.
Tumblr media
These shelled quadrupeds can be spotted in sizeable herds within the Windward Plains, typically around water sources and areas ripe for grazing. Herds are led by a male with multiple females, but it's not uncommon to see different herds mix together to form larger herds with multiple males. So far, no intraspecific competition has been observed between males for mating rights, however it's plausible that some form of competition or selection occur due to the structures of the herds. Combined herds typically form during the Windward Plains' season of plenty where lush grass carpets the land around large water sources making vital resources plentiful.
Tumblr media
As mentioned prior, herds are led by a single large male identified by the sexually dimorphic characteristics that include their size, darker color, and the distinctive tall spikes that adorn their backs. Although helpful in defense against predation, the spikes' main use is as lightning rods. Due to the inclement climate of the Eastlands, the Windward plains often experiences intense thunderstorms that are characterized by high winds and deadly lightning strikes, dubbed the Sandtide. To protect the herd, the male stands within the center of the group, allowing lightning to strike it's spikes and grounding the energy, while the females and juveniles lay down, keeping their softer undersides close to the ground.
Juvenile Ceratonoths look almost identical to adult females, however it is assumed that male and female characteristics develop with maturity. Reminiscent of Aptonoth and Apceros, Ceratonoths defend their young fiercely, often forming defensive circles around their young. If this fails to drive off a larger predator, the sheer size of some of these herds acts as safety net for the young, allowing them to flee with the cover of the larger adults. The mating season seems to occur mainly during the season of plenty where higher number of juveniles have been observed.
Tumblr media
Alongside the Ceratonoths themselves, a curious companion is often seen riding on the tough shell plates of these animals. These birds are aptly named Nothpeckers, and can be seen keeping the Ceratonoths clean of old shell material and parasitic insects. In return for the maintenance, the Ceratonoth herds provide safety and food for the Nothpeckers.
Tumblr media
Both of these species have only been spotted in the Windward plains, however I have heard of some unconfirmed reports of Nothpeckers being spotted in the Scarlet Forest. If this true, then perhaps that's where the Nothpeckers nest for their own breeding season as the only bird I've seen roosting within the Windward Plains is the Amstrigian. These incredible animals are sight to behold to those new to the Eastlands and provide a wonderful microcosm into how life has evolved around this volatile environment.

Note
What are your thoughts about Ceratonoths? I love the idea of the males having lightning rods on their backs, but why only the males then? I wonder if it's a sexually-selected trait like deer antlers or peacock tails and the lightning rod effect was just a beneficial bonus?
I wasn’t able to play the open beta so I didn’t get to check them out in detail but I think they might be my favorite of the ornithischian herbivores!
I think the lighting rods could be somewhat of a sexual selection thing but it also might have been selected for as a way to protect the herd from the lightning strikes of the Windward Plains, making them keystone individuals.

Monster Hunter Wilds ‘1st Trailer,’ screenshots
From Gematsu
Tumblr media
Capcom has released the first official trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds, which introduces the game’s untamed landscape teeming with new monsters, as well as first glimpses of the story, characters, system, and more.
Get the latest details below.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, players join the ranks of a special Research Commission team investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the Monster Hunter series, the hunter ventures into the unknown with their companions, including Guild-appointed handler Alma, their Palico partner, and a mysterious child. Monster Hunter Wilds features multi-dimensional biomes that can transform in unexpected ways. The first locale to be unveiled is the Windward Plains, a vast region encompassing harsh deserts, twisted rock formations, and swaying grasslands abound with life. These immersive ecosystems are populated with wildlife acclimated to their surroundings, including smaller monsters like Dalthydon, an herbivorous wyvern that migrates seasonally, and Ceratonoth, who rely on males to shield the herd from raging storms with well-developed dorsal horns that serve as lightning rods. Of course, large monsters also roam the Windward Plains, including Doshaguma. While massive and territorial, these fanged beasts are curiously sometimes sighted stalking the plains in aggressive packs. Meanwhile, the formidable amphibian Chatacabra uses its surroundings and adhesive saliva to become an even stronger adversary by armoring its body with natural materials like ore. To help hunters meet the challenges that await in Monster Hunter Wilds, the beloved gameplay of the series has evolved with an arsenal of new features. Players will experience a seamless flow from story sequences to gameplay without interruption. To traverse this world’s sprawling environments, the game introduces Seikrets, a new type of mount. These nimble creatures can guide their riders to destinations and allow hunters to perform actions on the go, such as sharpening weapons, gathering materials, and wielding the slinger. Hunters can also swap to a secondary weapon with their Seikret, empowering hunting parties to adapt to the changing conditions out in the field without returning to base. All 14 of the series’ iconic weapon types return in Monster Hunter Wilds and have now evolved to include new actions. Additionally, the game introduces brand-new systems, such as Focus Mode, giving hunters more precise control over aiming, guarding, and attacking monsters’ weak points. The new Hook Slinger also offers hunters additional abilities, including contextual actions and the power to collect items from a distance – even when mounted atop their Seikret. Monster Hunter Wilds players who link their Monster Hunter: World save data can receive special bonus items. This includes the Felyne Leather Set (Palico Armor) and Felyne Acorn Spade (Palico Weapon) for linking Monster Hunter: World base game save data, and Felyne Duffel Set (Palico Armor) and Felyne Trekker Peckaxe (Palico Weapon) for linking save data from the title’s massive expansion Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.
Monster Hunter Wilds is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam in 2025.

the ceratonoths crack me up because the males have evolved a lightning rod to protect the females from lightning. so they sit there screaming at the sky like STRIKE ME DOWN ZEUS to protect women.
Tumblr media
also there's an oversight in their ai where they just keep walking into the bramble bush and dying from the damage. i can just sit there and passively farm raw meat while taking minimal damage lmao

MH Wilds Trailer analysis part 2: Movesets
Go read part 1 here for more story and character stuff, and here for the official website. Anyway, now for the FUN part.
Tumblr media
The Doshaguma rears up for a big, delayed, probably tracking slam with its forearms. This slam in particular is practically begging to be countered by just about anything.
The hunter draw slashes with his greatsword, backrolls, turns around, then front rolls. The hunter is then hit, resulting in what might be a new falling over animation.
Tumblr media
also it looks like hunter expressions got an upgrade. lol.
Tumblr media
The Doshaguma bodily throws the corpse of a Ceratonoth at the hunter, Deviljho style, and then Jojo poses. This move was actually in the previous trailer as well, making it seem like something that happens fairly often. It would not surprise me if a charged Ceratonoth inflicts thunderblight if it hits you.
The hunter successfully superman dives the throw. In the background, a Ceratonoth with "big spikes on its back" (Alma the Handler's words, not mine) absorbs a lightning strike, getting staggered in the process.
Next, what is almost assuredly the intro cutscene for the Chatacabra plays. Moving on to the gameplay part:
Tumblr media
The Chatacabra rears back, tongue flailing, for a 270 degree attack. This attack has rather short range and could be avoided with smart spacing. It also leaves a trail of saliva on the ground, possibly implying it's a waterblight attack.
The hunter wide sweeps with the greatsword, and gets tripped by the tongue without getting knocked back. The fact that it's a trip attack means certain weapons can just tank through it and keep attacking.
Tumblr media
This is almost assuredly the enrage roar of the Chatacabra. The amphibian scrapes its forearms into the ground during this, leaving them covered in Garangolm style rock fists. It probably also works like Golm's enrage, in that knocking off the rock fists causes a special flinch/down.
The hunter is charging up a slash from neutral, and notably doesn't get flinched from the roar. Judging from the Chatacabra's size and place in progression, it probably doesn't need earplugs to block.
Tumblr media
The hunter gets hit with a classic charge attack from the frog. This attack probably only occurs when the Chatacabra has its rock gauntlets.
Tumblr media
During the time when the hunter is ragdolling (NOT AFTER), the hunter whistles, then is bodily picked up by the Seikret mount. The fact that the whistle occurs after the hunter is hit but before he lays on the ground, this might be a Wirefall-esque quick get up option. It is very possible some harder monsters might have Rise/Sunbreak style juggles require this technique to escape, and I for one can't wait for that.
Meanwhile, froggy boi ends his charge attack, shakes his head, and then launches immediately into an advancing double tongue sweep that kinda reminds me of Magnamalo's double bite. Maybe roll away from the first sweep, then roll forwards to get past the second? Anyway, this move may or may not require rock gauntlets/enrage to come out.
Tumblr media
Next, frog man gets jumped on by the resident raptors, which have INCREDIBLY cool jaws that they use to latch on to large monsters to get a unique stun. The hunter here just watches, but this is a prime damage opportunity.
Tumblr media
Going back to the bear gang, the pack alpha goes for a jumping bite (that I'm pretty sure is different from the one at the beginning of this post, then does a silent roar. Side note, one of the smaller Doshagumas does this same exact roar in the above image.
Tumblr media
The hunter calls his mount, circles around, and then switches weapons from greatsword to heavy bowgun and starts blasting rapid fire ammo, which I thought was a light bowgun exclusive. Side note, firing heavy bowgun while on the Seikret is awesome.
Meanwhile the alpha Doshaguma CANCELS his silent roar into a shoulder charge, without going into an idle stance. Note that the smaller Doshaguma couldn't combo out of the fake roar, and instead went straight to running after the hunter. It's unknown whether this is an alpha exclusive combo, or if the hunter just got too far away from the smaller bear.
Tumblr media
Next, the hunter dismounts the Seikret with a cool jumping attack in which he twirls around in the air to land in what looks like a neutral stance. Cool, but the hunter is in the wrong stance to go into a charged attack. You might be able to do a leaping slash (wide sweep after charged attack 2) like after an aerial charged slash in Rise, but I'm not sure.
Meanwhile, the monster kinda just walks forward, then looks back annoyed. Something's up there, as there is no way a regular monster would just. you know. walk past the hunter without doing anything.
And then, the main theme starts blasting, the cool shit starts happening, all with the introduction of what the website calls Focus Mode. Part 3 Here.

Note
Ceratonoths are so funny because the males have huge lightning rods on their backs. but the fact only males have them, like with boar tusks or deer antlers means they use them to fight for mates. like how do they even fight with their back spikes
That's...quite an interesting observation, actually. I had just gone with the idea of "Oh males lead the herd so they have the protective lightning rod, because they protect" but you do bring up quite a good point! Maybe they get mates based on how big their rods are?

Note
Since sending my last ask, I can confirm that large monsters do hunt small monsters. I watched a doshaguma hunt a dalthydon, and then minutes later, I watched a pack of doshaguma attack another one. The first time, it showed up as a "doshaguma half eaten carcass" and gave me an investigation quest, but the second time, the game crashed before I could take a look.
That said, I would like it if the ceratonoth in particular reacted a little better to large monsters. As it stands, they literally slept through a fight between me and a doshaguma. Interestingly, I have noticed them get nervous and run away before, so I'm hoping that these behaviors will be implemented in the full game. I will definitely be including this in my feedback report after the beta ends
Oh good! 💖✨
I’m glad it’s still there then, and could just be the beta version doing what beta versions do then. I’m glad you’re bringing it up to them, that’s why they let us play these early builds after all.
