Xystrocera globosa, a medium sized species (1.8 to 3.4 em in length), is fairly well represented in the Orient including the islands of Andaman. The species has so far been recorded from some 12 host-plants in the mainland of India (Beeson and Bhatia, 1939). Xystrocera is a genus of beetles in the subfamily Cerambycinae, the only genus in the tribe Xystrocerini. Xystrocera includes the following species: 1. Xystrocera alcyonea - Pascoe, 1866 2. Xystrocera festiva - Thomson, 1861 3. Xystrocera globosa - Oliver, 1795 #xystrocera #xystroceraglobosa #xystrocera_globosa #beetle #bug #bugs #insectspecies #nature #garden #homegarden #gardening #lifearoundplants #naturelovers #naturelove #naturephotography #naturephotos #natureinfocus #mobilephotography #mobileclick #tarlokkumarphotography #insect #insects #insectworld #insectphotography #insectsofinstagram #insectagram #insects_of_our_world #insectgram #insectsinindia #insectsofindia (at Punjab India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNcIK5vAipQ/?igshid=1mzpx7swye34n

Flat-Faced Longhorn Beetle - Sternidius alpha
As the common name of this Beetle suggests, its face more vertically flattened (horizontally flattened would be more like a Clown Beetle) than other Longhorn Beetles; it makes it look like the mandibles are projecting straight downward and that the head doesn’t bulge out! Picture 1 is your best bet to see the face of this insect since it didn’t seem to be too keen to have its picture taken. Looking at the Milkweed Longhorn might give you a better idea by the term “Flat-Faced Longhorn”, since the Milkweed Beetle is also a member of the that subfamily (Lamiinae). Interestingly, during research on which Beetles are classified into this family, it turns out most uploaded Longhorn Beetles on this blog belong to the subfamily of Flat-Faces. The only exceptions to this at time of posting are the Ant-Mimic Longhorn (belonging to typical Longhorns - Cerambycinae) and the Pole Borer Beetle (atypical Longhorns - Parandrinae). It’s amazing to think about the tremendous amount of diversity in the Longhorn Beetle family, and to think, it’s just a fraction of the diversity on showcase in the order Coleoptera!
Getting back to the insect on showcase here, this Beetle was very much on the move when it was found, and didn’t fancy having its face shown on camera. It did showcase its shell in its haste; the shell features graveled patterns with a touch of brick red along with black spots and stripes. The legs and antennae feature this sort of patterning as well; get up close to this Beetle to find all the detailing. It’s this sort of patterning that appears on Longhorn Beetles in the Sternidius genus, to varying degrees of color and saturation of course, but from the images I’ve cross-referenced, this Beetle fits within that genus; S. alpha being a really good match! Moreover, though a good match, without extreme examinations of the specimen, identification is not 100% possible (this is also the theme for Friday’s post as well, from Lepidoptera). On Bugguide, if you search “steridius”, look at the Beetles on display and the understanding will be much clearer. Conclusive identification of this specie against others within its genus comes down to the fine details, and sadly, fine details are much harder to catch with a phone’s limited camera.
