starting a reread of a series i really loved as a kid and i am once again hit full force with the hilarity that is realizing the true depths of the lack of context you have for things when you are a kid.

the climax of the book features a sequence where they sneak off a ship that hosts a traveling circus, escaping through paris onto a train where they meet the king of bulgaria.

as an 8 year old who had never heard of europe or any location within it, the part of this sequence that made the most sense to me was when they encountered a genetically engineered sabertoothed tiger, because my favorite book was jurassic park.

so many things in this book smeared together into a fun and fantastical and vaguely confusing background noise, because i was up until that point totally unaware of concepts such as cell phones.
