Nana's House Installation, London College of Fashion - Community Co-Curator
Nana's House is an interactive living room installation, as part of Designed for Life which coincided with the opening of the new campus in Stratford, East London, UK.
The living room reflects and represents a broad heterogeneity of lives and experiences in East London told through a fictional family gathered on a Sunday afternoon at Nana's house, using artefacts and QR-linked soundscapes to represent each family member.
"Nana's one of a kind, and so is her house. It's Sunday afternoon, and her Leytonstone Victorian terrace is at capacity. Mum, dad, uncle and Grandad congregate around the jollof, but I'm more interested in the sweet, spiced tea and homemade samosas that have made a regular appearance here since we took in a lodger - an Indian-Muslim exchange student from Hyderabad.
My grandparents have lived here long before I was born. The walls tell the tale of an exuberant young textile worker arriving in London in 1960, fresh from Ondo State, Nigeria, with an infatuation with the latest in fashion and design. Over the years my mum has tried to add some modern toches; working in finance, she began to share her wealth in the late 80s with a new TV and sofa - much to the apathy of Grandad, who only believes in fixing what is broken.
Grandad was a print worker, a determined trade unionist whose career ended at age 48 with a labour dispute on Wapping High Street in 1987. A "real East Londoner born within earshot of the Bow Bells", he fought the resurgence of fascism around Ridley Road Market with the 62 Group and got bruised, whilst mourning the death of his and nana's first newborn, in battles against Oswold Mosely.
He tells stories of how he fell in love with Nana in 1961 to a soundtrack of Marvin Gaye. They triumphed against melancholy and fell deeper in love. In 1966, they celebrated the World Cup win for England together, of which West Ham players were an integral factor!
Having spent the summer away from my parents, I am inspired by the community and political strength of my grandparents. I collide with my parents' capitalist complicity - working in government and global trade; they mock my uncle who gave himself earnestly and entirely to the rave scene of Lea Valley." Soundbites of the family members: • A phone call to the lodger - shopping in Ilford as a Pakistani woman • Grandson - Teenage Frustrations • Grandad - The History Of An East London Print Worker • Nana - A Nigerian Matriarch • Uncle - Cultural History Of The East London Rave Scene • Mum - Affluence, Influence & Merit • Lodger - Far From Home • Bonus
Nana's House was created by lead curator Dr Leila Nassereldein and co-curated by community members Pallavi Chamarty, Omolara Obanishola, Dave Sohanpal and Anh Tran. Supported by Dr Michael McMillan
Artist's works featured around the living room: • Poppy Frean • Sahira Khan • Mercedes Halliday • Shama Kun • Brahim Bendaoud • Lydia Wood • Asim Khairdean • Toyin Gbomedo • John Curtis Films on the TV: • Looking for You - Anna Nguyen & Kristine Landon Smith • Sonia's Whitechapel - Hend Draz, Maya Leonavicius, Fangjiao Liu, Jake London, Angela Josephine Smith & Claire Wasson with special thanks to Sonia Sylvester • Radical Nostalgias - Mercedes Halliday • To Style a Life for Oneself (trailer) - Omolara Obanishola • Dress For Our Time: In conversation with Helen Storey and Michael Saunby - Helen Storey • Drawing Reality - TIGERs • Tarek’s Story - David Betteridge • Reflections from Za’atar - Helen Storey Special thanks to Sahira, Lord Tusk, Theresa, Tony Sullivan, Lee McKarkiel, Furniture Reuse, The Dovetail, Popup Garden Bookshop and Niquelle LaTouche Oct 2023 - Jan 2024

Labor Day
Summer’s final fling has arrived in the form of Labor Day. Yes, most of us get the day off, but this holiday triggers mixed emotions. While summer still has 21 calendar days left, it’s time to get serious. School’s starting and there’s a sense that summer vacation is over. So what’s behind Labor Day — and how did it earn a place as a federal holiday?
Let’s take a look.
When is Labor Day  2023?
Labor Day always falls on the first Monday in September, which means anywhere from September 1 through September 7. This year it's September 4 in the U.S. and Canada. However, this is not the case for most countries — the majority of which celebrate on May 1.
History of Labor Day
Do you get weekends off work? Lunch breaks? Paid vacation? An eight-hour workday? Social security? If you said “yes” to any of these questions, you can thank labor unions and the U.S. labor movement for it. Years of hard-fought battles (and the ensuing legislation they inspired) resulted in many of the most basic benefits we enjoy at our jobs today. On the first Monday in September, we take the day off to celebrate Labor Day and reflect on the American worker’s contributions to our country.
Labor Day History
There’s disagreement over how the holiday began. One version is set in September 1882 with the Knights of Labor, the largest and one of the most important American labor organizations at the time. The Knights in New York City held a public parade featuring various labor organizations on September 5 — with the aid of the fledgling Central Labor Union (CLU) of New York. Subsequently, CLU Secretary Matthew Maguire proposed that a national Labor Day holiday be held on the first Monday of each September to mark this successful public demonstration.
In another version, Labor Day in September was proposed by Peter J. McGuire, a vice president of the American Federation of Labor. In spring 1882, McGuire reportedly proposed a “general holiday for the laboring classes” to the CLU, which would begin with a street parade of organized labor solidarity and end with a picnic fundraiser for local unions. McGuire suggested the first Monday in September as an ideal date for Labor Day because the weather is great at that time of year, and it falls between July 4th and Thanksgiving. Oregon became the first U.S. state to make it an official public holiday. 29 other states had joined by the time the federal government declared it a federal holiday in 1894.
Maguire or McGuire? Read more on this unusual coincidence in our FAQs below.
What is the Haymarket affair?
On May 4, 1886 — at a time when most American laborers worked 18 or even 20 hours a day — tens of thousands of workers protested in cities all across the U.S. to demand an eight-hour workday. Police in Chicago attacked both those peaceful protests and a workers planning meeting two days later, randomly beating and shooting at the planning group and killing six. When outraged Chicagoans attended an initially peaceful protest the next evening in Haymarket Square, police advanced on the crowd again. Someone who was never identified detonated a bomb that killed a police officer, leading cops to open fire on protesters and provoke violence that led to the deaths of about a dozen workers and police.
The Pullman strike
Ironically, Chicago was also the setting for the bloody Pullman strike of 1894, which catalyzed the establishment of an official Labor Day holiday in the U.S. on the first Monday of September.
The strike happened in May in the company town of Pullman, Chicago, a factory location established by luxury railroad car manufacturer the Pullman Company. The inequality of the town was more than apparent. Company owner George Pullman lived in a mansion while most laborers stayed in barracks-style dormitories. When a nationwide depression struck in 1893, Pullman decided to cut costs the way a lot of executives at the time did — by lowering wages by almost 30% while he kept the rent on the dormitories he leased to his workers at pre-depression levels.
Railroad boycott
These conditions ultimately led workers to strike on May 11, 1894. The walkout gained the support of the nationwide American Railroad Union (ARU), which declared that ARU members would no longer work on trains that included Pullman cars. That national boycott would end up bringing the railroads west of Chicago to a standstill and led to 125,000 workers across 29 railroad companies quitting their jobs rather than breaking the boycott.
When the Chicago railroad companies hired strikebreakers as replacements, strikers also took various actions to stop the trains. The General Managers Association, which represented local railroad companies, countered by inducing U.S. Attorney General Richard Olney, a former railroad attorney, to intervene. Indianapolis federal courts granted Olney an injunction against the strike, a move that allowed President Grover Cleveland to send in federal troops to break it up.
A few days later, Cleveland realized that he had to act quickly to appease the country’s increasingly agitated labor movement. But he didn’t want to commemorate the Haymarket incident with a May holiday that would invoke radical worker sentiment. So Cleveland harkened back to the first established September 1882 holiday and signed into law that Labor Day in the U.S. would be celebrated on the first Monday in September.
Labor Day vs. May Day
Communist and socialist factions worldwide eventually chose May 1 as the date to mark the Haymarket affair. A 1904 conference issued a plea that trade unions stage rallies on the first day of May — demanding to make the eight-hour workday standard. They organized the action in the name of “universal peace.” The 1st of May is a national, public holiday in many countries across the world, generally known as “Labour Day,” “International Workers’ Day,” or a similar name – although some countries celebrate a Labor Day on other dates significant to them, such as Canada, which celebrates Labor Day, like the U.S., on the first Monday of September.
Here’s the U.S. Department of Labor’s official tribute to U.S. workers on Labor Day:
“The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known, and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.”

Labor Day Traditions
Much like Memorial Day, which marks the traditional beginning of summer, Labor Day generally signifies that the season has ended — even though the calendar says otherwise. Holiday sales, barbecues, and travel tend to rule the day, while children finally adjust to the harsh reality of the “back-to-school” season. As far as U.S. sports are concerned, Labor Day weekend signals that baseball’s pennant races have entered their final stretch, and tennis fans get an extra day to watch the season’s last Grand Slam event — the U.S. Open in New York City. NFL regular-season games typically begin following Labor Day.

Labor Day FAQs
What does Labor Day really mean?
Americans, as well as workers around the world, celebrate Labor Day by reflecting on all the contributions everyday workers have made to society. Not all countries observe Labor Day on the same date though.
When is Labor Day 2020?
The U.S. observed Labor Day 2020 on Monday, September 2. It’s a federal holiday. Financial markets are closed. There is no mail delivery. Post offices and libraries are closed. Most retail businesses will remain open.
Who invented Labor Day?
It’s more confusing than you might think. The Labor Department explains it this way:
While most sources, including the U.S. Department of Labor, credit Peter McGuire with the origination of Labor Day, recent evidence suggests that the true father of Labor Day may, in fact, be another famous union leader of the 19th century, Matthew Maguire.
Maguire held some political beliefs that were considered fairly radical for the day and also for Samuel Gompers and his American Federation of Labor. Allegedly, Gompers, who co-founded the AFL along with his friend McGuire, did not want Labor Day to become associated with the sort of “radical” politics of Matthew Maguire. So in an 1897 interview, Gompers’ close friend Peter J. McGuire was assigned the credit for the origination of Labor Day.
What's the difference between Labor Day and May Day (May 1)
May 1 (or May Day) is a more radicalized version of Labor Day in many countries. The date recalls Chicago’s Haymarket affair in 1886. American workers, tired of 18-hour days, staged a protest. Police eventually fired on the workers — killing eight. The following night, May 4, another rally turned violent when someone threw a bomb at police officers. An estimated 11 people died and scores more were injured. Communist and socialist political parties eventually chose May 1 as the date to honor the dead and injured workers.
Labor Day Activities

Watch a movie about labor unions
Labor Day has a rich history that directly impacts the working conditions we experience today. So in between rounds of BBQ at your Labor Day celebration, take the time to discuss the U.S. labor movement and its contribution to our country's current work culture.
When you're doing your Labor Day shopping, take the time to read the labels. Consider buying products that say "Made in the USA" to show your support for American workers.
Many of us get Labor Day off. What better way to relax than to stretch out on the couch and watch a movie about the American labor movement? There are tons of union-themed movies to choose from. "Norma Rae" ring a bell? Side note: Unions play a major role in the entertainment industry.
5 Labor Day Facts Everyone Should Know!
It’s on May 1 in other countries
Stores remain open
Third most popular holiday for outdoor cookouts
Labor Day marks the unofficial NFL kickoff
Union members today
Most countries around the world celebrate Labor Day on May 1, and it is called International Workers’ Day.
While most schools and offices are closed on Labor Day, retail workers and shopkeepers don’t get the same break, as the holiday is huge for sales and shopping.
Labor Day is right behind the Fourth of July and Memorial Day in being the most popular holiday for barbecues and cookouts.
99.4% of the time, the NFL’s first official game of the season is on the Thursday following Labor Day.
In 2017, there were 14.8 million union members, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while in 1983, there were 17.7 million.
Why We Love Labor Day
We're hard workers — we deserve the day off
It's one last chance to grill
It's the reason we can say TGIF
Statistics show that Americans work longer hours than citizens of most other countries  — 137 more hours per year than Japan, 260 more per year than the U.K., and 499 more than France. And our productivity is high — 400% higher than it was in 1950, to be exact. So we totally deserve that day off.
Labor Day is widely considered to be the unofficial last day of summer. Before the air turns cold and the leaves start to fall, it's our last chance to grill some steaks and wear shorts.
Labor Day is a time to celebrate the benefits we enjoy at our jobs — including weekends off. The concept of American workers taking days off dates back to 1791, when a group of carpenters in Philadelphia went on strike to demand a shorter workweek (10-hour days, to be exact). It wasn't until 1836 that workers started demanding eight-hour workdays. So nine to five doesn't sound so bad after all.

June 2023 Reading Wrap-Up!
Halfway through the year, and I'm excited to report that I'm either on track or ahead of all my reading goals for 2023! I've just got to focus more on reading books I already have, instead of buying new ones. Should be easy enough, right? ;-)
As always, stats up here, mini reviews under the cut. Click through to see what had me swearing at my empty living room at 1:30 a.m.
Total books read: 7
Total pages read: 1,816
Days read: 23/30
Average star rating: 4.33/5
Challenge Prompts Filled: 13 in June; 66 total. Popsugar: 6(23)/40.   Romanceopoly: 3 (18)/36. CRAD: 1(6)/12. BTBL: 3(19)/52
Happy Singles Day by Ann Marie Walker
⭐⭐⭐⭐(¼)
This was cute! I picked it up on a whim, when I found myself with some free time at the big library branch across town, because I liked the idea of a romance novel celebrating singlehood. I liked watching the MC figure out who she is outside of her job, and her love interest was such a compelling dude. Between his daughter and his sister, and his bed and breakfast, he really made the story for me. It wasn’t quite grumpy/sunshine, because Lucas opens up as things progress, but something about his reluctance to even be invovled in the story at all really entertained me. The only thing I’d say really bugged me was the dog. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs. Like, so much. But the cover has a picture of a little terrier shaped pup, and then the text describes the dog as a “pit bull/boxer mix,” and it drove me nuts every step of the way. A little detail, maybe, but the discrepancy really threw me off.
Prompts filled: Popsugar – A book about a vacation
Summer on Blackberry Beach by Belle Calhoune
⭐⭐⭐(¾)
What a fun little summer read! I’ll admit, I was expecting there to be some sort of Christmassy detail, given that the town is called Mistletoe, but once I got past that, this was so delightful! I grabbed it from a book thrift store while my friend was in town visiting, after the teacher/Navy SEAL fake dating plot caught both of our attentions. I liked watching the characters learn how to move past their respective losses, and that they communicated really effectively through much of the story. Too many times, the plotline falls apart if the characters would just have like one mature conversation, so I really enjoyed that they did that here and the story held up. It was refreshing to watch these characters grow together and find the futures they didn’t think they deserved.
Prompts filled: Popsugar – About a holiday that’s not Christmas; Romanceopoly – Soldier Street/One of the MCs are in the military
Biting Through The Skin: An Indian Kitchen In America’s Heartland by Nina Mukerjee Furstenau
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I’ve had this on my shelf for … probably two years now? At least a year and a half; I’m pretty sure I bought it at the library fall book sale on Fill A Bag day. Food as a vessel for culture has always interested me, and the idea of a memoir pairing Indian food with Midwest culture (where I’ve lived my entire life) was particularly fascinating. Turns out the author spent most of her childhood like three hours from where I grew up/live, in the same small town where one of my friends is from! Every chapter includes stories about the Indian foods that flavor her memories, and the recipes are at the ends of the chapters. I haven’t cooked any of them yet, but maybe someday! The essays were heartfelt and compelling, like I could feel myself in the kitchen right alongside the author and her family, with the warm, hearty spices and sentimental stories.
Popsugar – favorite prompt from past challenge (2022 – a book with a recipe in it); BTBL – Epistolary/unusual writing style (recipes)
Darcy by RJ Scott, Meredith Russell
⭐⭐⭐⭐
At some point, I got this for free on my Kindle, and it got the callup this month for being something short enough that I could read it in a couple of days, but compelling enough to hold my attention (also, for having a five-letter title!). I’m admittedly a sucker for fake dating-turned-romance, but usually the “dating” couple is the endgame, so it was interesting to read a story that turned the trope on its head. Darcy and Adrian had such an instant attraction, but more than just sexually. I loved seeing them open up to each other, and how supportive Darcy was through the whole story, of both Adrian and his sister, and especially at the ending. I’m definitely planning to pick up the rest of the series at some point.
BTBL – less than 170 pages; CRAD – half as many letters as May; Popsugar – Forbidden Romance; Romanceopoly – Passion Place/slow burn or instant heat contemporary romance
The Water Baby by Roz Denney Fox
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Finally, I got back around to reading this for the first time in … 15 years or so? I don’t remember exactly when I read it for the first time, but I do remember picking it up from my mom’s book stack when I was probably too young for Harlequin romance novels. I liked it then, and saved it from a garage sale pile a few years later. It’s well-loved and rough around the edges, but the best books always are. Luckily, it’s just as good now as it was years ago, and absolutely worth the shelf space for all this time.
Prompts filled: BTBL – released at least 23 years ago; Popsugar – Set in the decade you were born
Egghead: or, you can’t survive on ideas alone by Bo Burnham
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I don’t have much to say about this one that I haven’t said before. I love poetry, I love Bo Burnham, and some of my favorite poems ever are in this book (look at you, The Letter!). This particular reread was just shy of an hour, sitting on the floor of my denbrary, looking for something to spark inspiration for an upcoming writing project I'm trying to plan. I’m not sure yet, but I think I figured it out, at that!
Prompts filled: None
The Last Flight by Julie Clark
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fuck this book. Five stars. I’m writing this right about an hour after I finished devouring the book in three days. Mostly two days – the first day I only had time to read like the first chapter. Usually, I’m not one for thrillers, but this caught my eye at the same thrift store as Blackberry Beach up above. Once I realized it’s a signed copy, and was only three dollars, I basically had to give it a try. And holy HELL, am I glad I did! I was sucked in from the first few pages, absolutely enthralled right down to the end. In fact, on page 142, I actively shouted “what the fuuuuuuck?!?” out loud to my empty apartment. It’s that sort of a book. I had a loose suspicion of how it would end, but there were a lot of things I didn’t see coming. I’d KILL to see this one as a movie, and I’m absolutely going to read the author’s other thrillers. Sometimes, there’s a benefit to stepping outside my wheelhouse, because I have a feeling this is going to be a top 10 for 2023.
Prompts filled: Popsugar – A book about divorce; Romanceopoly – Killer Crescent/a thriller of your choice

We focus on brewing traditional and innovative styles of beer, using only the finest ingredients. Our goal is to provide a unique and enjoyable drinking experience for all who visit our taproom.
Alewife Brewing has fallen in love with the stories of ancient times and the roles women had in society. The peace they emulated through their beliefs and love towards nature and all species has inspired us to capture their magic in our beers and on our 16 oz. can labels. The latest historical findings suggest that wine was not the oldest elixir, but in fact, beer mixed with psychedelic substances used in shamanistic ceremonies dating back much further. Gathered and formulated, the Alewives were the makers of both spiritual and medicinal potions.
Through our journeys thus far in life, we’ve developed a deep love for ancient elixirs while brewing and traveling to learn ancient and modern techniques for exceptional beers brewed at our new home in Sunnyside, Queens.
Don't worry, it's just beer we make, no special additions!

THE ERAS TOUR!!!
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift created the Eras Tour in a celebration of her musical journey, which showcases all of her albums, which represents a specific “era” of her career. The tour was originally announced in 2022. The tour features her transition from country to pop, and then to indie-folk.
If I want to talk about memorable experiences, I will always go back to the Eras tour. May 27th, 2023. The process all began back in October when we all gathered around a lunch table, after school eagerly waiting for nearly four hours in line to secure the seats. The rush of quickly picking the seats that were available and the pause of our breath to see if the ticket made it to the cart is another type of adrenaline rush I can’t explain. “SUCCESS!” The screen showed us, confetti falling from the top of the screen. We turned to one another, faces red with pure excitement, got up and hugged each other, squealing as we jumped around in circles.
We arrived at the venue at MetLife Stadium, trying to move through the crowds of people, holding hands in a train formation, as we got to our seats. After everyone was settled in, bathroom breaks and all, the opening acts were Phoebe Bridgers and Gracie Abrams. At that time, I was not an avid listener, in fact, I think I started getting into both Phoebe and Gracie after this concert (crazy). Phoebe played one of her most popular songs, Motion Sickness and Scott Street, which I remember the most vividly because those were the songs I heard to convince myself to listen to more of her music. Gracie Abrams played I Know It Won’t Work as one of her songs, which I recognized as one of her typical mainstream songs (it’s popular for a reason).
Then the main act, Taylor, obviously came out starting off with her song Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince, rising up through the stage. The crowd went wild, it was roaring, I was definitely singing my heart out (sorry for those who heard me). We were given glow up bracelets, which were glowing with every song and every beat. Taylor finished the set for the first era, Lover.
Cruel Summer
The Man
You Need to Calm Down
Lover
The Archer (I teared up)
Right after this set, we got Fearless with the songs:
Fearless
You Belong With Me
Love Story
What a nostalgic throwback.
Then it was Evermore with:
‘Tis the Damn Season
Willow
Marjorie
Champagne Problems
Tolerate it
My friends and I were either screaming or in tears (my friend got her toe stomped on during Tolerate it).
Then, the concert went from a complete twist of slow and romantic music to hype upbeat music for her Reputation album. The stage went black and before Taylor came back onto it, a big green snake was projected on the floor of the stage where it slithered eerily. The song that next played was …Ready for it? What a great way to open up the set! The songs played for this era were
Delicate
Don’t Blame Me
Look What You Made Me Do
Fun fact, Reputation was the theme for my outfit!
Taylor then made her way to perform for Speak Now, but we only got one song, so I kind of felt robbed. She could’ve done so much with this part. We got:
Enchanted
That was it.
Red came along, my friends went wild. Two of them dressed in the Red theme. Personally, this one is one of my favorites and one of my first listens to an album of hers. She played:
Red
22
We Are Never Getting Back Together
I Knew You Were Trouble
Nothing New (WITH PHOEBE BRIDGERS!!!!)
All Too Well (10 minute version)
We got Folklore with a change in scenery; the ivy house and her flowy earthy toned dresses.
Seven
The 1
Betty
The last great american dynasty
August (my favorite)
Illicit affairs
My tears ricochet (scratch that, this on might be my number 1)
Cardigan
She made her way to 1989 with:
Style
Blank Space
Shake It Off
Wildest Dreams
Bad Blood
I really loved how she made switches from sadder and slower songs to her upbeat and fun pop songs, it really helped the audience from staying bored– at least for me.
Finally, I need to discuss the surprise songs because in the car, it was a bit of a funny story. My friends and I were discussing our predictions for the surprise songs. One of my friends said if Taylor played False God during the concert, she would text her crush and tell him she liked him. Keep this in mind.
We got
FALSE GOD
Holy Ground
She ended up texting her crush; now they’re dating (Yay)! Holy Ground is slept on by so many people. I think it needed to get the love that it got that day. I love Taylor's acoustic voice and her acoustic guitar. It really changes the vibe of the song entirely and makes you understand it from a new level of depth.
Right after the surprise songs, Taylor made her way to the final set-list of the night– Midnights. The songs were:
Lavender Haze
Anti-Hero
Midnight Rain
Vigilante Shit
Bejeweled
Tumblr media
* Bejeweled Dance– if you know, you know.
Mastermind
Karma (WITH ICE SPICE)
I was not ready for the moment she brought Ice Spice out with her. Their song was ok (a topic for another time), but I was happy to experience it regardless. The musicality and the presentation of this concert were out of this world, topping any other concert I’ve been to or any other concerts of hers she did. One of the best and most meaningful moments of my life as an avid music listener. I’m crossing my fingers right now that the upcoming months and year will help me enrich myself in the culture of live concerts, because I feel that through live concerts, musicians are connecting with the fans, giving us the most genuine and authentically free-flowing music. I really wished she included her Debut album, Our Song was literally the first song I listened to of Taylor’s. Anyways, I gave you guys a version of the tour on this blog post, (the links on the songs) so GO LISTEN!

The latest fashion news, beauty coverage, celebrity style, fashion week updates, culture reviews and more on sseditorial.com. August's best talking points.
Flatten Your Summer
Tumblr media
The shoe of this summer is the slingback flat. Unsurprisingly, they were all over the Chanel and Dior catwalk, which has trickled down onto the high street. Usually, the height of summer is dominated by trainers, wedges and sandals. Not this year, though! We're talking flats all summer and maybe for the winter, too.
Watchlist: Blade Slingback Flats in Patent Leather Black, £740, Saint Laurent.
Lips Bright Like a Diamond
Tumblr media
Clarins' makeup often seems overlooked in favour of their (undoubtedly excellent) skincare. But the Clarins lip oils are the best glosses we've ever used. They aren't sticky. They actually hydrate and smooth lips and come in fabulous colours (and flavours). Our top choices are Candy, a shade-adjusting pink, and Blackberry.
Who's Got Beef?
Tumblr media
Beef on Netflix is the show of the month! Danny and Amy are different sides of the same coin. They both feel empty despite leading very different lives. In fact, Amy has what Danny wants: a career, a picture-perfect family and social status, but she’s still unhappy.

From Runways to Sidewalks: Embracing Jelly Shoes in 2023
When it comes to fashion, trends often find their inspiration in unexpected places. One such trend that has made a stylish comeback is none other than jelly shoes. Remember those translucent, colorful shoes from your childhood that squeaked with every step? Well, they're back, and they're making waves from the runways to the sidewalks in 2023. Say hello to the modern revival of jellies shoes – a trend that's both nostalgic and avant-garde.
Jelly shoes, also known as jellies, have a long and intriguing history. These quirky and distinctive shoes first gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, adorning the feet of kids and adults alike. Made from a unique PVC material, these shoes were known for their translucent and vibrant appearance, making them a must-have accessory for summer escapades. However, they weren't just confined to the beaches; jelly shoes found their way into everyday fashion as well.
Fast forward to 2023, and jelly sandals are back in the limelight. The runway shows of esteemed designers featured a modern take on these iconic shoes, and it's safe to say that they're not just for children anymore. From sleek jelly sandals to edgy jelly boots and chic jelly slides, the jelly shoe trend has evolved to suit every style and occasion. One brand that's leading the charge in this revival is Carmen Sol..
Carmen Sol, a name synonymous with quality and innovation, has seamlessly reinvented the jelly shoe trend for the contemporary fashionista. Their collection of jelly shoes encompasses a wide range of styles, from elegant jelly sandals adorned with metallic accents to playful jelly slides perfect for a casual day out. But what truly sets Carmen Sol apart is their commitment to sustainability. These jelly shoes are made from recyclable PVC, ensuring that you not only look good but feel good about your fashion choices.
Jelly shoes from Carmen Sol have been spotted on the feet of fashion influencers and trendsetters, cementing their status as a must-have accessory for the season. The brand's ability to combine the whimsy of nostalgia with the sophistication of modern design has struck a chord with fashion enthusiasts around the world. Whether you're walking down the city streets or stepping onto the sandy shores, Carmen Sol's jelly shoes offer a unique blend of style, comfort, and eco-consciousness.
What makes the 2023 jelly shoe trend even more exciting is its versatility. Gone are the days when jelly shoes were limited to a single silhouette – now, you can find them in various styles to suit your individual taste. Whether you're pairing jelly sandals with a flowing sundress for a beachy vibe or donning jelly flats to add an unexpected twist to your evening ensemble, these shoes are a surefire way to make a statement.
Embracing jelly shoes in 2023 goes beyond merely adopting a trend; it's a celebration of individuality, nostalgia, and sustainable fashion. As we navigate the ever-evolving world of style, it's refreshing to see a trend that bridges the gap between the past and the present. So, whether you're reliving your childhood memories or discovering the magic of jellies for the first time, one thing's for sure – jelly wedges are here to stay, and they're ready to accompany you from the runways to the sidewalks in style. Step into the world of Carmen Sol's jelly shoes and experience the fashion renaissance for yourself.

5 Trends from Spring 2024 Copenhagen Fashion Week
youtube
Copenhagen Fashion Week SS24 Video
With the Spring 2024 Copenhagen Fashion Week coming to an official close tomorrow I put together some 5 trends we've seen from different brands. Today I'll be covering a bit about the trend and my take on them. Firstly, a quick disclaimer, I am not a trend broadcaster by any means nor do I have higher education in fashion so much of this is more of an opinion piece if anything.
Earthy Tones
Tumblr media
Ganni at Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024
Firstly, a lot of shades of browns were highly used throughout the collections. On the opposite side we did see some pastels and bold colors in street fashion surrounding the event. In my own opinion, I am kinda over the browns. I have a lot of dark shades in my wardrobe only because it compliments my mexican skin tone better than my favorite colors. Since the rise of interest in dark academia and other aesthetics, these white, browns, and blacks appear unavoidable at this point.
Sheer Materials
Tumblr media
A. Roege Hove at Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024
Throughout the week we saw different sheer and crochet pieces. More of the garments are on the feminine and light brown side appearance wise. However, most collections turned away from the normal crochet pieces we've seen from influencers recently. Similarly goes the sheer garments. Personally this trend doesn't interest me as much as the others on this list. I just feel like crochet style items have been here for a while at this point. Some of the other sheer fabrics interest me but otherwise I'm indifferent.
Printed Denim
Tumblr media
Paolina Russo at Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024
Copenhagen Fashion Week is more known for showing jeans and denim-on-denim outfits. In making the denim items newer, illustrations and details like that made an appearance on them. Personally I love these little details a lot! In the states we are seeing more creative denim although not to the extent that Copenhagen Fashion Week has shown. I'm hoping we continue to see an increase of this trend come next spring.
Trench Coats & Suits Jackets
Tumblr media
Lovechild 1979 at Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024
Throughout the multiple collections baggy and oversized items are noticeable. Most commonly among these types of clothes are trench coats and suit jackets. Color pallet wise, beside just the normal browns and blacks we see with these types of coats, note that there were also spring jackets that embraced pastels from Rolf Ekroth, the Garment, and Baum und Pferdgarten.
Due to my size I tend not to like baggy clothing as such. However, I love how people style this type of attire. I can't wait to see how people continue to style themselves with this trend.
Statement Jewelry
Tumblr media
Gestuz at Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024
For the love its back and hopefully it stays. Not too long ago more and more celebrities or influencers were staying away from jewelry and necklaces for award shows and daily wear. The jewelry they did wear was smaller in size. However, the 2023 Met Gala gave more chucky jewelry which has been put into different Copenhagen Fashion Week looks. We might be seeing a rise in bigger necklaces and brooches this next spring depending on how the upcoming fashion weeks, celebrities, influencers, and marketing teams incorporate the materials.
Notably Copenhagen Fashion Week saw several silver and gold pieces even from influencers. It's also good to note that several pieces from Lié Studio, which is owned by Danish models Amalie and Cecilie Moosgaard, were spotted on influencers. The brand is known for more beaded jewelry and rain drop shaped earrings. Their pieces on their site now are mainly completely silver or completely gold and appear more rounded in shape. We'll have to see if this type of jewelry will have a rise this upcoming spring.

Adventuring Spotlight: Wages in Vice
I finished running my first published adventure late last month; the Wages of Vice from Journey through the Radiant Citadel written by T.K. Johnson. In the past, I had been skeptical of published adventures as I was worried about integrating them into a current campaign and it felt like "cheating" in terms of adventure prep. I always took pride in creating my own worlds (the current incarnation is Feyruin; a collaborative world created by our game group) and writing my own stories (and we know what they say about pride).
Tumblr media
However, when Wizards of the Coast released Journeys through the Radiant Citadel I loved the concept, and I picked it up on launch day. My first campaign in our shared world ended over the summer and then we had the game search project though we had space in our schedule amid the winter holiday schedule toss-up.
Since we have a collaborative world, I had been tentative to read the full book as I didn't want to spoil adventures that others might run. After negotiation with the group, I picked Wages of Vice as it matched the needed level, and this spotlight article from Polygon made the adventure sound fantastic:
Your heroes arrive in the city of Zinda, and it’s a festive atmosphere. It’s time for the March of Vice, a Carnival-like celebration where revelers sweep their sins and vices into the sea. It’s loud and colorful. There’s street food and rides and a huge Mardi Gras-style parade. And then they trip over a dead body.
Tumblr media
I normally am a Lazy DM and thought it best to read through the adventure to get a sense of the full story and pacing. After that first reading I was hooked; the adventure immediately grabbed my brain and made me excited to run the story. I decided to set the location within our shared world rather than include the Radiant Citadel and nestled the setting into Feyruin. Then I took the characters from the prior campaign and rolled the adventure premise into their backstory making a nice holiday special style-adventure.
The adventure is great. After a brief introduction to the mini-setting, the author lays out the encounters with narrative threads to drive the story. The encounters include combat and social elements with call-outs for major non-player characters and mechanics for story elements [1]. After the adventure conclusion, there is a gazetteer that provides more information on the mini-setting and includes other adventure hooks for exploring the setting.
I completed the adventure in 3-sessions and it went well. My fears and pride were squashed outright.
I was able to add the adventure into the world and modify the hook to mesh well with the character.
I was able to make the adventure my own by modifying the NPC motivations and the backstories. And I could not have come up with as vibrant an adventure on my own without the framework.
The only issue I had with the adventure was my own. The character had a small NPC entourage (the group traveling about trying to garner support for a rebellion, which is what brought them into the adventure). I had trouble working with them during the encounters, and juggling them with the player to scale the combat encounters properly.
Another issue(s) I had was pacing the encounters and making sure I had the threads straight between the different sessions. We managed though I think more experience DMing will make this an easier skill. I want 2023 to be a year where I run more games and I am trying to look at DMing as art; it is never perfect and I will always be growing.
There are no stat blocks given in the book and instead the author refers to the Monstrous Manual to provide that information ↩︎

Y-3 Spring/Summer 2023 collection
Tumblr media
In 2022 Y-3 boldly celebrated 20 years of memories – recoding key moments from the past two decades of the industry defining partnership between adidas and Yohji Yamamoto . This season , the progressive brand triumphantly returns to kick off the beginning of a new era, reimagining its foundations in order to fearlessly look ahead tomorrow. For the first chapter of its Spring/Summer 2023 collection, Y-3 explores the concept of “Artisan Codes of Sport” disrupting elegance with a series of daring garments, footwear, and accessories.
Continuing a lineage of renegade dynamism, Y-3 Spring/Summer 2023 Chapter 1 reinterprets the quintessential visual codes of team sports to celebrate a multifaceted design vision. Drawing on adidas’ athletic heritage, the apparel and accessories range boasts letterman jackets, track pants, cargo pants, shirts, cardigans, caps, and beyond – all featuring brushstroke Y-3 logo graphics which subvert sporting codes through the lens of artisanal handicraft. In addition, a selection of tailored, elegant, silhouettes, brings the collection full circle – blending adidas’ sporting heritage with Yohji’s avant-garde legacy.
The footwear selection is then home to a curated selection of silhouettes which reinterpret the sporting codes of classic adidas franchises through Y-3’s uncompromisingly rebellious lens. Paying homage to the Japanese technique of Sashiko stitching, the Y-3 SUPERSTAR, the Y-3 HICHO, the Y-3 MARATHON TR, and the Y-3 GAZELLE, each feature accentuated tonal stitching – all threads intentionally hanging loosely. Further sneaker highlights include the Y-3 RIVALRY, and the futuristic Y-3 RUNNER 4D HALO.
Accompanying the launch of Spring/Summer 2023 Chapter 1 is a campaign that celebrates the roots and origins of Y-3 . Shot by Jiro Konami and Emily Okuda-Overhoff, the campaign is set within Japan for the first time in the brand’s history – offering evocative nods to the country’s rich legacy of street style photography. Journeying from day to night through various locations across Tokyo, the cast of models, each embodying Yohji’s rebellious spirit, is captured candidly in between a fluid set of dynamic movements, which pay homage to the visceral Japanese dance form of Butoh.
Subversively looking ahead to a new era of elevated design and avant-garde aestheticism, Y-3’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection is available from January 13th 2023 on adidas.com/y-3, in Y-3 stores, and through select global retailers.
