Ren Stark x Celda Greyjoy

The smell of salt and sea hung heavy in the air within the halls of Pyke. Ren could taste it on his tongue as he lay beneath the pile of furs on his bed, and he could feel the flavor of it dancing on his lips as he pressed another kiss to Celda’s jawline.

She smiled at him blissfully, running her hands through his reddish brown curls before pulling him closer to kiss him on his already swollen lips.

“Mm, you are quite the man, Ren Stark,” she said. She kissed him again. “It is no wonder all those noble ladies throw themselves at your feet.”

“I have no desire for them,” Ren responded, brushing his thumb along her pointed chin. “And they should have no desire for me, if they only knew the truth of what I am.”

Celda furrowed her thin brows at him. “And what are you, Your Grace?” she asked. “What could possibly make you so undesirable?”

Ren shook his head and turned away from her. “You wouldn’t understand,” he said. How could she see the brokenness within him? How twisted his insides had become after all he had endured?

Celda grabbed his shoulder with more firmness than Ren had ever felt from a woman before. Even though he couldn’t see her face, he could hear the fierceness in her voice when she spoke.

“Then make me understand.”

Knowing that this was a battle of wits he would not win, Ren sighed heavily before shifting around to face Celda again. Her clear blue eyes bore into his own, awaiting an answer.

“I am not a good man, not like everyone thinks I am,” Ren explained. He could hear the disappoint in his voice. The despair. “I am shattered into a thousand pieces, and there is nothing left to hold me together, now that Jeyne is gone. The coldness of my heart is that of my blade, and just as heavy. All that is left of me is emptiness. I have nothing to give but grief and misery. What woman would want that?”

Celda cupped his face in her hands. Her expression was surprisingly soft as she regarded him.

“You fool yourself, Ren,” she said quietly, without any of her usual harshness. “If your heart is as cold as the steel you wield, then why do you seek my warmth?”

“Because I have found my peace within you,” Ren responded after a moment. “And there it will stay, and so will I.”
