so i just finished relistening the tma s3 finale and, immense emotional damage aside, i noticed a really fun little detail!

so, when nikola was taunting jon disguised as leitner she said this

now. clearly the double meaning here is pipe (the one for smoking, so close to the cigarette) and pipe (as in, you know, the metal pipe elias used to bash leitner's head in). but also! during the unknowing, everybody was losing their sense of reality, and they all became unable to trust their perception of anything, including themselves. which reminded me of this bad boy!

ceci n'est pas un pipe by magritte! magritte was a surrealist painter definitely and this work is one of the most iconic works from that movement. it is not a pipe, it's a painting. but it is a painting of a pipe! so how is it not a pipe? but you cannot use it to smoke, so how is it a pipe?

that's the whole point of the painting and of surrealism itself— to fuck with the viewer perception of what's real and what's not, much like the unknowing!

i don't know if it was an intentional thing or if i simply read too much into it, either way i think it's kinda cool!

I had this illustration commissioned for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP, I expect to at least be done with the outlining and character studies this summer). A big thank you to @cecikiwi for this beautiful piece! I'm happy I made you discover Dungeon Meshi through this commission!

Some elements of the story already changed, and they will certainly still change as my understanding of the characters deepens and the plot develops.
