— IBD AWARENESS — • • Strength! 💪🏻 • • Yes, I know IBD Awareness Week has been over for 3 days... but I missed out on the last day because I was busy having a meltdown over running out of lights for our Christmas tree... 😂 • • Looking back at where I was 5 years ago... I had just quit a job baking/doing what I love most because my body wasn’t allowing me to do it. I couldn’t stand on my feet for a whole day, I wasn’t able to withstand the hot to cold of a kitchen to the freezers or coolers. My Crohn’s was trying to rob me of everything I had worked so hard to achieve. • • But look at me now! 💁🏻‍♀️ • • I am working towards a business of my own baking cakes for birthdays, weddings, etc. I am working a full time job. I am graduating with a Bachelors degree in business management in 11 days. I am on a committee for an event I’m passionate about. I am doing everything and WAY more than I could have even imagined 5 years ago. 💜 • • And even though Crohn’s tried to rob me of the things I love most, it also taught me my own strength and that I am capable of overcoming those obstacles. It taught me how resilient I am. I honor of Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week, I’ve decided it’s important to share my story. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) after a brief hospital stay this past January. UC is a chronic, autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. There is no cure and symptoms can flare up on and off at any time for little to no reason. In my case, the UC is a genetic predisposition that had remained dormant until my symptoms commenced last year. Since receiving this diagnosis, I have been adamant about managing it as holistically as possible, however, the reality of this disease set in a few months ago when a flare up knocked me down for 7 days. Anything I ate made me sick, I was bed-ridden and my doctor was concerned that the inflammation was spreading. We re-evaluated my treatment plan and in addition to the holistic remedies, we incorporated a medication that has very minimal side effects. As someone who has been healthy my entire life, this disease has taken a toll on me mentally, emotionally and physically. I haven’t been able to do a lot of the things I love at the capacity that I am used to. I have spent more time in the hospital and doctor’s office this year than I have in the past 10 combined. Our health is really everything and it’s imperative that we do all that we can to maintain and nourish our bodies. I am incredibly fortunate to have an awesome team of doctors, great insurance and an amazing support system! I have been apprehensive to share this, but they say it’s important to “Make Your Mess Your Message”, so if anyone out there is suffering, you are not alone, whatever it may be. This journey has just begun for me, but I am navigating through and my health is improving. Oral healthcare. As my disease processes have continued, my oral health goes through its stages. I was never forewarned about the damage that would come from #medications, #dehydration, corrosion from #GERD, let alone *just* inflammatory disease. Each year I use my allotted dental insurance either at the very beginning, or the very end of the year (I’m procrastinating going right now). My dentist blocks out HOURS for my appointments, since he knows there’s always work to be done, and it’s not my favorite place to be. . . This photo is of X-rays a few years ago, before he dove in for that session. All of the smooth white is areas that he (or his uncle) has worked to fill in with strong enforcement. I always seem to break them though, as the root cause is still within my body and tongue. . The next photos are of something I’ve been living with on/off for years, but has been continuous for 1.5yrs. This is #geographictongue. It’s not glamorous. It burns. It hurts. It’s irritating. It cycles through starting small and then HUGE. The only way to try help it, aside from getting inflammatory diseases under control, is to massage a thick steroid cream directly on it. It sounds as delightful as it is. — IBD AWARENESS WEEK — • • Mental Health... • • I feel like this topic still isn’t touched on enough in our society in general...but to think back to when I was first diagnosed with anxiety & depression, it’s come quite a long ways. • • When I look back at my childhood and teenage years, I can definitely pick out some anxious tendencies, but it wasn’t until I started having health issues at 20 that anxiety started to try to control my life. And unfortunately, I’ve been battling it ever since. • • For me, my anxiety isn’t just excessive worrying... If I don’t have it under control, it develops into a really dark, scary monster. I have never been considered suicidal. However, I have had those crazy intruding thoughts of everyone would be better off without me, or getting in a car accident wouldn’t be so bad, or maybe something should go wrong when I’m under anesthesia. Listen... I know these sound crazy and I’ve never shared this before, but I think it’s important that I do. And y’all don’t need to worry about me, I’ve gotten this under control currently! 🙌🏻 • • But every time my anxiety and depression start to get the best of me, it is generally when I am going through something with my health. When my Crohn’s comes to play, so does my anxiety and depression. I’ve learned to take it one day at a time, not be embarrassed that I take medication to help my mind, and to talk to others about exactly what I’m feeling, right down to the crazy intruding thoughts. 💜 • • Mental health is just as important as physical health, so don’t neglect it! The #fibromyalgia (a result of my last surgery for #IBD - #CrohnsAndColitisAwarenessWeek) sometimes makes me get up a lot earlier than planned.
