Ino had been so sure she'd done all she could to hide evidence of her and Shikamaru's little celebratory night, but it appeared she still missed the mark somehow. Had her concealer not done its job like intended? Had her collar just not been adjusted properly? Either way, Choji had noticed, and that only made her grow more self-conscious of the situation.

"I-Is it really that noticeable?" She stammered, more frazzled now than ever to try and hide the mark away. Trying to come up with a more solid solution than the first two she'd tried only proved to be a bit more of a challenge.

It was embarrassing enough that Choji had caught on to them, but with Shikamaru it was impossible not to get carried away.

"No, don't worry. I only noticed because I'm with you two the most, you know, more than you are two with each other," Choji replied with a chuckle, not wanting to stress Ino out if he continued to play along. He was happy for his best friends, but ironically Ino trying to cover it up was exactly what caught his attention in the first place.

"So I will be your escort today, Shikamaru's orders. Probably to stop him from giving you any more," he added, trying to keep a straight face. At this point, he just couldn't help but tease his friend, Shikamaru was probably spending his day wondering how well he did with making Ino's birthday a special one.

Shikamaru did his best not to respond to Ino as she called after him, he'd explain to her later once this was all over. Soon he bumped into Choji who gave him a decoy packet of chips, just like they had planned. "Thanks, I owe you one, Choji."

"You know what you're going to tell Ino though? She seems pretty mad," Choji replied, looking at Ino who was catching up with them. Well sticking with the plan, he went off to do more grocery shopping.

"Sorry, Ino," Shikamaru started to apologise, wondering if it would dig his hole further if he told Ino the truth, that it was part of a dare. "Choji really wanted these limited edition chips haha."

Ino had barely finished up her latest shift at the flower shop before she'd even noticed Shikamaru approach. Normally there wouldn't have been any issues with bumping into each other, considering they've been in each other's lives for as long as they've been, but this? This wasn't normal. He kissed her... near her ear. And then he ran away? He. Ran. Away?

"Shikamaru! What the hell was that? If you're gonna kiss me, at least do it right, you coward!" Ino called out after him, obviously irritated. Who did he think he was? A measly kiss near her ear? Did he NOT know she had wanted more than that? That she deserved more? Nope. He wasn't going to get away with it. For now, she'd allow him a little head start, but oh... when she caught him, she'd show him exactly how he was supposed to do it!

Happy Birthday Ino 2024 [from Shikamaru & Choji]

cc-naruto-s-rank-shinobi “Happy Birthday Ino, morning Shikamaru!” Choji greeted his friends as they walked out of Shikamaru’s place. “I am here to tell you today’s schedule, ahem. Ino you have plans with the girls today, we’re all meeting up for BBQ for lunch, and later, there’s something special planned for you tonight!”

"Morning Choji!" The blonde greeted warmly, pulling him into a hug. "And thank you." She'd spent the first half of the morning with Shikamaru, and now that they were out, and Choji came around, she probably should have expected some plans to be made for her special day. "I see you've got my birthday all planned out for me," Ino teased playfully. Honestly, she really didn't mind. She had been meaning to spend some more time with the girls, so that worked out perfectly. Still, Ino was rather curious about what was happening later on. "Oooh, a surprise, huh? Well, I'll be sure to look forward to it."

Though Ino was intrigued by the thought, she could wait until the night rolled around.

"But going back to the first thing. Where am I meeting up with the girls?"

It was Ino's first birthday since they started dating, and it was an easy transition since she stayed at his place the night before because of his own birthday. Shikamaru also got Choji involved in case he got sloppy, but pretty much it was Shikamaru heading the day's plans like it was a mission.

"Yes, as you deserve, Ino!" Choji replied happily, just as long as they kept Ino on the right track according to plan. "Oh right, the girls are meeting you at the flower shop! They also said they'd get the guys to kidnap Shikamaru if-"

"Ahem, shall we get going then?" Shikamaru cleared his throat as he grabbed Ino's hand so they could walk ahead, Ino did not have to know the details of their backup plans. Soon they led Ino towards where she worked, and when the girls spent their time with her, it allowed the guys to help Shikamaru for his plan for tonight.

“That might as well be the vital part of the problem. His mind has always been elsewhere, especially when I tried to hint at my feelings. It was like it just went past him. Subtlety clearly doesn’t work.”  It was frustrating to say the least. Ino had never been shy about a crush before. She was normally so in tune with how she felt and ready to make moves… to openly show her interest, much like she did with Sasuke… So then why would she suddenly try a more subtle approach? It was strange.  “I… don’t want to wait too long and miss my chance, but…” She took a small pause after taking in his words. Ask each other? Was Choji hinting at something or what? Up until now, she was mostly stuck in her own thoughts. “Ask each other? What do you mean by that?” It was confusing because she didn’t really think that they were both on the same page, but just that alone was enough to make her start questioning things. “D-Does this mean you’ve talked to Shikamaru about this?”  It was the only thing that actually made any sense in her mind. Because really why else would he word it like that? And it’s not like she wanted to pry, but if they were truly pining over one another for so long, then she’d had to make a move, didn’t she?

“That’s unfortunate, he’s usually sharp about these things, especially when he goes on diplomatic missions,” Choji admitted, guess it was different between close friends compared to a client through a mission. Different things were on the line there too for Shikamaru, a successful mission and keeping his friendship with Ino.

“Uh, well…” He might have said too much while trying to keep the conversation going towards the results he wanted, but it was important to guide Ino to take action, because he was sure they’d get nowhere if they were waiting for Shikamaru to move things forward.

“I haven’t spoken to him about you specifically Ino, just things in general, he could be talking about someone else. That’s exactly why you two need to talk to him and clear the air,” Choji answered, sweating a little now and knowing that was his cue to leave before he made things worse.

“Thanks for the meal, I’ll see you later Ino! Remember to not take too long!” Choji added hastily after putting the last piece of BBQ in his mouth before rushing out. It was time to talk to Shikamaru, to nudge him a little more towards where Ino was heading, boy setting those two up was almost like an S class mission!

 “Though it seems a bit strange, doesn’t it?” She asked as the two were seated at a table. “There are only tables for two here.”

Normally she wouldn’t have questioned Choji’s motives, but considering the restaurant’s seating arrangements for the night, she couldn’t let it go unnoticed.

“He planned this.” She said, a deep sigh escaping her lips, as she thought about it. Considering she hadn’t done anything about her feelings before, of course, Choji would put it upon himself. “He must have, or he’d be sitting with us right now.”

“Yeah, it is...” Shikamaru agreed at the table arrangements, Choji wouldn’t be this careless especially when it came to eating out so. “Of course he did, which means…”

This definitely had something to do with their recent talks, about his feelings towards Ino and being honest with her. Shikamaru knew he couldn’t just avoid In or the conversation anymore, Choji would probably set them up on another ‘date’ if he stalled again, so he decided to at least try to take the initiative.

“I guess we should take the chance to clear the air, huh.”

“Choji! There you are, you owe me for last time, now come on!” Naruto exclaimed while dragging Choji away past them with a grin to another table.

“Sorry you two, I didn’t think Naruto was here so...” Choji apologised with a slight bow, acting like he had no choice on the matter.

“Aw, thanks Ino! You’re my best friend and I love you too!” Choji replied with a grin, especially since she was treating him to BBQ again. “Now tell that to Shikamaru, and make sure he knows you want to be much more than that!”

Ino had been such a huge support and advocate for him, she really helped build his confidence over the years. So it was amusing Ino lacked that only when it came to Shikamaru, who was hard to read as ever. “You just need to be honest and direct with him first, I think you’ll be waiting a long time if you want him to make the first move, Ino.” To him Shikamaru was not being dense but maybe respected Ino so much that he ended up friendzoning himself.
