If you’re still taking submissions for CBC saturday, I’d like to submit my character Anthony Franklin! He’s a Black scottish naturalist/botanist in the uk in the 1790s, something of a Gentleman™️, who is loosely involved with several of the social reform and radical political movements which were going on at the time (which the story is focused on). He’s a fairly quiet and cautious man who really just wants to be able to live at home with his family and play the violin and tend to his extensive garden, but he is driven to a role as a pamphlet writer and public speaker by a natural hatred of the colonialism and racism perpetrated by the country he lives in, as well as an uncompromising dedication to his beliefs in liberty, equality, abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, etc. Still doing some research on the sorts of hairstyles Black men of his position and social class would have had back then/how to draw them so I’m sorry that his hair isn’t really the best rn!
[ID: a dark-skinned Black man with short natural hair in 1790s clothing. He is wearing a blue coat, a green waistcoat, tan breeches, a white cravat, and he is holding a plain book. End ID]
Tbh, I love it when Black characters in period pieces aren't forced into them damn wigs. Like, I get that it's technically right because they were supposed to reach for whiteness, but I hate it. I hate it most in fantasy.
Anyway, I like that his natural hair is showing. His story is interesting too! Thank you for submitting!

Calgarians gathered in the Beltline on Saturday to protest high grocery prices and call for more stringent regulations on Canada's major grocery chains. Rally goers held up signs as they marched down 17 Avenue S.W. that read "Stop the grocery gouge!" and "It is a privilege to be wealthy. It is a right to be fed." The demonstration comes in the wake of a $500 million antitrust class action settlement paid by Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and its parent company George Weston Ltd. for their involvement in a bread price-fixing scheme. Maggy Wlodarczyk, chair of the Calgary chapter of the Alberta Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), who organized the rally, says people are sick and tired of paying high prices for food while grocery chains rake in massive profits.

Okay I take back what I said about Indie88 because it turns out they do in fact have a podcasted version of this out to listen to
Also I forgot to remove the two listener comments, I had my first-ever live caller during Desire (/after Starburster) which was cool
actually do you want my notes from the Indie88 interview with Fontaines? I’m using it for my radio show tonight because I like to keep the suspense™ in case any of my eleven (11) listeners (of whom I know at least 2 have told me they keep their radio on at low volume 24/7 to avoid total silence) don’t want tonight’s show spoiled. If you want to become a 12th listener sure. If you’re someone who wants to text me mid-show I Will love you forever, only problem is I know most of you are not in North America and so asleep!
Regardless, I’ll post juicy deet's of the interview after my show tonight. Hooray!
#Updated with the podcast for anyone that wants to hear it again#Lana is proper indie; she used to host CBC Radio 3’s Saturday indie show back when that station still existed#like 10 years ago now#Fontaines D.C.#Fontaines Romance#Spotify

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won a gold medal in the women's welterweight division and was her country's flag bearer in the Olympics closing ceremony. She's become a hero in Algeria and is bringing global attention to women's boxing. But what she's most famous for is the intense scrutiny about her sex and gender after a rain of online criticism and false claims during the Paris Olympics. Now, the Olympic boxing champion has filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment, according to her lawyer. In a statement posted Saturday to Instagram, Khelif's lawyer, Nabil Boudi, alleged "aggravated cyber-harassment" targeting Khelif. He described it as a "misogynist, racist and sexist campaign" against the boxer.

“The three [hostages] had been holding up a white flag and were fired upon against Israel's rules of engagement, according to an initial inquiry into the incident, a military official said on Saturday.”
It’s been recorded fact since October that the Israeli Occupation Forces have been deliberately killing unarmed civilians in Gaza and the West Bank. Videos from the siege of Al-Aqsa Hospital show patients and families shot as they hold white flags. Up until this point though, the official line of the US and Israeli government has been to deny the war crimes that are easily visible and documented by multiple sources.
The murder of 3 unarmed, white-flag-waving Israelis by the IOF for the crime of seeming Palestinian is further proof that the IOF is on a campaign of murder and not conquest; the goal of Israel’s assault is to drive all people from Gaza through the random and mass killing of civilians.
Of note is that the Israeli government did not choose to deny this particular war crime. Possibly, government officials decided that Israeli citizens would accept the killing of their own if it were passed off as the actions of a few bad actors instead of the transparent, inevitable results of a mass murder of every human left breathing in Gaza. More likely is that the government was aware that the previous three hostages killed by Israeli forces were used as PR by the Al-Qassam brigades, and that there was no way that the murder of the hostages would stay quiet long enough for Israel to cover it up. Either way—now that the Israeli government’s official line is that its soldiers are killing surrendering civilians on purpose, the US has finally thrown away the last flimsy shred of plausible deniability. Biden is supporting a government that is openly and explicitly enacting a genocide.
#jerusalem#free gaza#free palestine#more of the ‘things that make you feel like you’re going insane’#based on US citizens’ reaction to the wars on Afghanistan and Iraq#(cough cough friendly fire incident cough)#a good chunk of the Israeli public is as likely to support the IOF killing all hostages than to support halting the genocide#we’ll see where it goes.

Hiya, I've been following your blog for awhile, its an insanely useful resource!
I figured I'd show you the squishy versions of three of my Black characters :3
Feedback is welcome and appreciated, but not necessary. I'm also willing to elaborate more about them if you like, but without further ado, here they are!
Eliyahu Rosenthal
Esther Mendelssohn
Oluwaseyi Adebayo
That's all, have a great night! :3
Oh I love these!!!! Oluwaseyi is my favorite, I love the bantu knots! And I'm always a sucker for the big eyes thing, like 🥺🥺🥺 I want to do one of these for my own OC. I love how even in simplified form, you found a way to incorporate their hairstyles and texture. Good job!

1987.
Mike Myers was a regular on the CBC Television program It's Only Rock n' Roll.
At the time, his character Wayne Campbell still had an especially strong Canadian accent.

More than 1,000 Calgarians showed up at city hall Saturday to protest against the United Conservative government. The "Stop the UCP" rally, organized by Trans Action Alberta and Queer Citizens United, ran from about 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and featured speakers including NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi. The Alberta government introduced bills earlier this week to prohibit minors from receiving certain types of gender-affirming care, require parents be notified when a child wants to use a different name or pronoun in the classroom, and also require that parents opt-in before their children are taught about sex in class. Another bill is designed to address the participation of transgender athletes in sport.

Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee who was found dead in the store’s walk-in oven on Saturday in Canada.
Halifax Regional Police in the province of Nova Scotia, were called to the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Road at 9:30 p.m. where they found the young woman deceased.
The woman “was located in a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department,” police said in an update Tuesday.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and a cause and manner of death have not yet been confirmed.
Investigators are working with Occupational Health and Safety as well as the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service in the case.
Officials have not said if the circumstances of the woman’s death are criminal in nature.
The Maritime Sikh Society in Halifax told CBC News that it is in touch with the mother of the victim, noting the mother and daughter are originally from India and came to Canada two to three years ago.
“It’s a really tragic incident and everybody is deeply hurt by this, and we are waiting for the police investigation to come out,” Balbir Singh told the outlet. “We would like to know what happened to this young woman.”
Walmart closed the store until further notice.
"We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family. Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and making sure they have the support they need," a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. "As police have stated, this is a very complex matter and the investigation is ongoing."
The company is providing virtual care and on-site support including grief counseling to store employees.
The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration said it issued a stop-work order Tuesday for the bakery and one piece of equipment at the store.
"Please note, workplace investigations are complex and can take time," a department spokesperson said.
