CURSED MOSS FACT #002
Lampenflora: Cave Lamp Communities
If you find yourself in a cave tour with electric lights be sure to look for lampenflora around them! Cave lights have created a unique ecological niche that allows cyanobacteria, algae, mosses/bryophytes, and ferns to grow in the Deep zone, where light is too dim for plants to explore. Cyanobacteria usually are at the outermost edges from the light, followed by algae, then bryophytes like the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, with ferns being closest.
Caves can be refuga for rare mosses as well! Learn more here. This is a picture of a very small cave that was full of mosses along the Oregon coast.

How does one teach an Aye-aye to play the guitar with that long middle finger?
Introduction to the Aye-Aye: The Rock Star of the Lemur World The Aye-Aye, a nocturnal lemur native to Madagascar, is one of the quirkiest creatures in the animal kingdom. With its large eyes, bat-like ears, and most notably, its elongated middle finger, the Aye-Aye is as fascinating as it is peculiar. This middle finger is primarily used to tap on trees to find insects, but what if we could…

2024 reads / storygraph
Sea Of Broken Glass
fantasy
two sisters who live on a floating village in a shallow ocean are exiled when one develops magic and can’t hide it like her sister does
they travel to the land, trying to survive searching for their mother who was exiled 20 years ago, through the wilderness and magical caves
crystal/mineral magic, magical creatures, sister relationships
#sea of broken glass#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#damn this is like. weird and whimsical fantasy world. unique magic system? weird religion? creatures? CAVES?#aroace & sapphic-aspec MCs with basically no romance? MADE FOR ME! unfortunately it’s bad#like just the writing quality is not at all there. like it took me 1/3 to even sort of realise that in theory this is exactly#my kind of thing bc the not good writing was too distracting#the beginning is EXTREMELY fast paced; there’s no breathing room and everything happens too fast to get a sense of anything#The voice of both POVs is the same. Their relationship is so back and forth and all over the place it got a bit annoying#+ they both feel like 16yos not 20-somethings.#worldbuilding details were distracting me - some were answered eventually but not before I was getting distracted with questions.#eg I need to know about the ocean ecosystem. if it’s knee deep where do fish live. where are ocean plants. are there deeper parts of the oc#they hear a wolf howling. how do you know what a wolf sounds like you’ve never heard one.#why does everyone hate magic? Obviously bigotry doesn’t have a reason but like. just felt like it was there to make the plot happen?#if she has magic crystal powers that she can make anything with why did she not make them a boat?????? or shoes???#they walk across the sea for days??#and like I am happy with weird and slightly nonsensical worldbuilding details if the writing style and tone is very whimsical yknow?#but this is not that.#And like there ARE lots of cool elements! salt based magic? the giant cave frogs??#but unfortunately the writing style and execution is just not there.#I had to drag myself through most of it just because I wanted to form an opinion on the whole thing#Also it really awkwardly mentions their sexualities immediately. I don’t mind a slightly awkward delivery of that tbh#but do you need to do so in the first few pages of their pov?

Thinking about the other day while I was caving and this one asshole kept scampering about like gollem.
#he wasn’t an asshole because he was scampering he was just an asshole who happened to scamper#didn’t wear gloves (those are good to protect hands AND protect cave ecosystem from your hands)#also didn’t wear pants (caves are cold and muddy you will hurt with shorts)#then kept acting like he was eco warrior hero man that knew everything#he was so annoying#PLUS he was acting like he couldn’t understand my friend who had a speech impediment even though he obviously could#’OHHHH you’re saying ANGLER FISH not ANGULAR’#SHUT UP!!!!!!!

you see all these deep genshin lore analysis pieces and yet none of them are asking the real questions:
why are there plants deep in the caves and why are they green???
#what are they photosynthesising? or did they evolve adaptations for life in caves so recently that they haven't yet lost their chlorophyll?#i have. so many questions about the ecosystems of teyvats caves#genshin impact

*casually checks follower count*
*backs away very slowly*
*shuts door quietly*
*keeps it open just enough for the cats*
That's... that's a lot of people. I don't know what to do with nearly four thousand of you. How did we get here? When did my swamp get bigger? What kind of treats do you like in your enrichments?
It's, uh, it's six thousand now.
#tumblr is a lightless underwater cave system and we are the little amphipods eating sand and detritus in the dark#tumblr is full of cryptids and we have the best ecosystem#beloved mutuals how are you all#who are all you people#we're not in it for the follower count in fact it kind of scares us

i think i might revamp my lore a little bit. again. not that there's much to revamp but likeeeeeeeeeeee
#i think a lot about What Do Animals Do Better Than Robots#in general not just in regards to flight rising bc i do study a thing that animals specifically are able to do and not robots#i guess maybe that's one cool thing about hyper regenerating biological mechas.... they can just Keep Going#the idea of a mecha that just keeps growing back its limbs (just in a wrong way) after being damaged is soooo.... idk... it's sexy to me#and of course they would need fuel#i guess that would give a rationale for the deep tropical setting? way more biomass in general lol#but then like the ecosystem. lmfao#maybe they have some kind of bioengineered stomachs that can break down any kind of organic matter into energy/fuel for regenerating#something like that#idk#anyway i think human vs alien is way too pacific rim for me and i also like my worlds to be Painfully Mundane in some ways#i think it's funnier if biomechs are literally just like territory guard dogs that people use to duke it out over mining resources in caves#or something#idk maybe even the caves are where you can farm a very specific type of microorganism that produces some valuable byproduct#i love saying idk. and i love doing stupid biology shit in my lore ouguhghrhhghghh

How does one invite a Saola to a unicorn-themed party?
Introduction to the Saola: The Real-Life Unicorn The Saola, often referred to as the “Asian unicorn,” is one of the most elusive and mystical creatures in the animal kingdom. Discovered only in 1992 in the Annamite Range of Vietnam and Laos, the Saola has captivated the imaginations of scientists and animal lovers alike. Also keep in mind that caves have their own unique systems - and letting in too many warmblooded creatures (humans) will affect them negatively.
AFAIK, the Coves del Drac in Majorca (Spain) are a major tourist attraction for good reason (the economy takes a hit if the caves are closed to the public) ... but due to the heat from the immense amount of visitors, it's actually affecting the rock formations over time.
Caves are weirder and more varied than you think
