The California Floristic Province (CFP) is a floristic province with a Mediterranean-type climate located on the Pacific Coast of North America with a distinctive flora similar to other regions with a winter rainfall and summer drought climate like the Mediterranean Basin. This biodiversity hotspot is known for being the home of the Sierran giant sequoia tree and its close relative the coast redwood. In 1996, the Province was designated as a biodiversity hotspot allowing it to join ranks among 33 other areas in the world with many endemic species. To be named a biodiversity hotspot, an area has to contain species and plant life that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The California Floristic Province is home to over 3,000 species of vascular plants, 60% of which are endemic to the province.

El Gouna Diving – Guide for Scuba Fans
The resort town of El Gouna, 20 kilometers north of Hurghada, was only opened in 1989 (my birth year!), but has managed to become one of the most fascinating places in Egypt - and the scuba diving around El Gouna is breathtaking.
Tumblr media
It’s kind of like a mix between Venice and St. Tropez, there are more yachts than cars here and more water canals than streets.
Tumblr media
If you’ve been nervous about coming to Egypt, El Gouna is a great start. It’s meticulously clean, quiet and hassle-free.
Besides 3 marinas, plenty of hotels, golf courses, boutiques, and delicious international cuisine, you can also enjoy an amazing time underwater.
Tumblr media
Since El Gouna is purpose-built and consists of several artificial lagoons, there is no reef along the beaches of the town itself. By boat, you can reach some fantastic dive sites in the Northern Red Sea though.
Tumblr media
El Gouna shares many sites to the south with its neighbor Hurghada including the beautiful horseshoe-shaped reef of Sha’ab El Erg with its spectacular coral gardens and Careless Reef.
From banks to first-class medical facilities, night clubs and restaurants to countless fun activities on land - everyone will find everything they need for a great vacation, whether you’re a diver or not.
That makes it especially easy when you as a diver go on vacation with non-divers, unlike in some other parts of the world. There’s plenty of stunning nature and diverse activities for everyone.
All the dive sites in El Gouna are only accessible by boat, as opposed to Dahab e.g., where you’ll go mostly on shore dives. You can find my scuba diving guides to Sharm El-Sheikh and Dahab here.
The good thing about diving in El Gouna is that no matter how much experience you have, there is a variety of dive sites suitable for all levels, from beginners to expert divers.
Note, however, that all sites are weather dependent, especially Abu Nuhas.
Tumblr media
Ideally, you have a few days time to make sure you’re able to dive all the best dive sites here even when the weather conditions change some plans.
The dive centers usually pick you up from your hotel around 8 am, depending on how close the dive sites you’re going to explore are to the shore.
The boat trip generally includes lunch after the second dive, and some operators offer snacks like fruit or cake in between dives.
If there are non-divers with you, they can join and just snorkel (at least on most trips, please ask before) and enjoy their time on the sea.
Did you know that so far, more than 400 species of coral have been recorded? And that 20% of the fish population in the Red Sea can not be found anywhere else in the world?
In this guide, I will first give you an overview of the best dive sites in El Gouna. After, you’ll get some more helpful tips regarding the best time to go diving in El Gouna and my recommendation for a safe dive centre.
I have to say, I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the diving here. I’d just come back from many days of diving in Sharm El-Sheikh as well as a one-week liveaboard from Hurghada to Marsa Alam, covering all the best dive sites of the Red Sea.
Tumblr media
Therefore, I wasn’t expecting too much, but I’m so happy I went and got to see dolphins and had lots of other stunning underwater encounters. El Gouna is a great place to go scuba diving!
Below, I’ve listed the 5 best dive sites around El Gouna, in no particular order. It always depends on what type of diving you prefer.
I’ve asked plenty of experienced and local divers and these names are the ones that always pop up.
The 5 Best Dive Sites in El Gouna
Abu Nuhas
About 2 hours cruising time from El Gouna lies the reef of Abu Nuhas. The Arabic name means "the father of bad luck", and stems from the no less than 7 ships that have hit this reef over the years.
It’s located to the north of Shaidwan Island, close to the Suez canal and usually partially submerged which makes it dangerous for shipping.
The two wrecks Carnatic and Ghiannis D. are the most interesting ones for divers:
The Carnatic is a 90-meter (295 foot) steamer that sunk in 1869. It’s known as the "wine ship" because it carried port wine that you can still see today, sealed with corks. The wreck is broken in two pieces and lies between 16 and 24 meters (50 and 80 feet). Since currents can be strong and stirring up the sand causing low visibility, it’s best to dive the Carnatic in the morning.
The Ghiannis D. is a large, modern freighter with its deepest point at 28 meters (90 feet). It’s very interesting to explore the inside of the stern with its command bridge, residential quarters and engine room. Groupers made the central part of this wreck their home and others, like eagle rays, snappers and sharks frequently pass by.
Siyul Kebira Island (Big Siyul)
Tumblr media
Marked by a solar-powered lighthouse, this island can be reached from El Gouna in 1.5 hours and from Hurghada in 2 hours.
It’s one of the most beautiful and least crowded dives in this area and especially suitable for beginners.
You’ll find a lagoon off the southern side that is no deeper than 25 meters (80 feet) and has a reflective coral floor.
Tumblr media
Thanks to a lot of light, the corals are very healthy and attract a huge variety of fish: angelfish, red anthias, butterflyfish and lots of others find shelter under the magnificent acropora formations.
Turtles, giant pufferfish, lionfish, giant morays and huge schools of glass fish can often be seen here. Frequently, you’ll also spot sharks dwelling on the bottom.
Shaab El Erg (Dolphin House)
The more than 5 kilometer long reef of Shaab El Erg is horseshoe shaped and lies directly east of El Gouna.
It’s become famous because large numbers of bottlenose dolphins use this location as a shelter and most of the time you will meet them.
Besides Marsa Alam, here is actually your best chance in the Red Sea to see them in the wild. I did see them the day I went, it was amazing!
At Shaab El Erg you can also often spot turtles, crocodile fish, rays, scorpion fish, napoleons and large schools of goat fish. The corals are very colorful, too.
I was pleasantly surprised to find not only dolphins, but also so many cute tiny sea creatures like nudibranchs, and, my new favorites: christmas trees. Those are worms that come in lots of different colors and just look incredibly beautiful.
Tumblr media
Dolphin House is just one of about 7 common dives here, but understandably the most popular one. Poseidon Garden is another option, here you’ll find lots of clams of all sorts in the huge table and brain corals.
Tumblr media
A big number of pufferfish likes it here, too, as well as schools of butterfly fish and bannerfish.
When it’s manta season, your best chance to see them is at Manta Point. You may also get lucky and spot a reef shark. Moray Eels and turtles are common inhabitants here.
Umm Gamar Island
Umm Gamar is one of the most popular dive sites in the Hurghada archipelago. It translates to “The Mother of the Moon” because this small island is crescent-shaped when you view it from above.
The sea bed can be up to 100 meters down. Dives are made on a slope that gently drops from 15 meters (50 feet) to 75 meters (250 feet).
At this dive site you have a good chance to spot free-swimming moray eels during daytime. You may also encounter large tunas, great barracudas and sometimes an eagle ray.
Tumblr media
Umm Gamar is also the kingdom of poisonous fish like scorpionfish, lionfish, turkeyfish and stonefish.
Always pay attention to your surroundings, try not to brush up against anything and maybe even wear gloves.
Just 5 minutes from here lies Shabrur Umm Gamar which is a great dive site for beginners.
Careless Reef
Careless Reef is the most famous coral reef in the area and the furthest dive site south of El Gouna.
It lies unprotected in the open sea which means that, especially during bad weather conditions, it can be a challenging dive and not necessarily suitable for beginners.
Tumblr media
Careless Reef is made up of 2 large pinnacles standing on a plateau that drops off on all sides. While the seabed is no deeper than 15 - 16 meters (50 - 55 feet) between the two coral towers where your boat moors, it suddenly drops 60 meters (230 feet) to the east.
This wall is full of caverns which are the home of lionfish and glassfish. You will see all sorts of marine life at Careless Reef.
Tumblr media
Plenty of small coral fish like angelfish and grunts swim between multicolored soft corals, red fire corals, and umbrella acropora.
If you’re lucky, you may even spot a gray shark or whitetip reef shark close to the deep cliff.
What you will definitely see are moray eels swimming fully extended around the reef, the huge creatures are one of the main attractions of the Careless Reef dive site.
Best Season For Diving in El Gouna
Tumblr media
The climate in El Gouna is cool in winter (20°C / 68°F) and hot in summer (40°C / 104°F). Water temperatures reach up to 30°C in summer and go down to 20°C in winter.
Below you’ll find a table with air and water temperatures for every month:
WATER AND AIR TEMPERATURES
MONTH AIR TEMPERATURE IN °C SEA TEMPERATURE IN °C January 21-22 20-22 February 21-22 20-22 March 21-24 21-23 April 25-27 23-24 May 27-31 25 June 32-36 25 July 36-38 25-27 August 38-40 26-27 September 29-33 27 October 29-30 24-26 November 25 23-25 December 22 21-23
Generally, I’d say that May to October is the best time to go diving in El Gouna. There’s usually more marine life in summer, including big animals.
A 5mm wetsuit with a hood is best from the middle of November to the end of March. For the rest of the year, a 3mm wetsuit is sufficient.
Recommendations for Dive Centres
I usually travel solo and I’ve made a few bad experiences, so I know how important it is to find a trustworthy dive center where you do not have to deal with security concerns and, as a woman, harassment.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, though it’s not dangerous, sexual harassment is quite common in Egypt and can be really frustrating.
El Gouna is probably the place in Egypt where harassment occurs the least, it’s a bit like a European town and very relaxed.
Nevertheless, finding a good dive center isn’t always easy.
To do my research for this Diving Guide to El Gouna, the team of Emperor Divers sponsored my dives for this trip.
Tumblr media
I've heard good things about Emperor Divers before and now that I've been diving with them myself, I can honestly confirm that everything is super organized, professional and safe.
If you're coming to El Gouna and want to explore the underwater world, you'll be in good hands with them!⠀

If you love nature, you may be concerned about the declining populations of some plants and animals in the US. though they live all over the country, some states have more than their fair share.
The following 25 states have more endangered species than anywhere else in the US. That’s according to 2015 data from the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Environmental Conservation Online System (ECOS) – the most recent federal data available.

The Illinois cave amphipod only lives in caves, and specifically only lives in caves down at the southern tip of Illinois. We can think of it as a water quality indicator, comparable to a canary in a coal mine – these amphipods are very sensitive to poor water quality.
In Colorado, the black-footed ferret is the only ferret native to North America. Domestic ferrets kept as pets are a different species – Mustela putorius furo – of European origin.

Given the wide range of unique microclimates and topography, it’s no surprise that Hawaii is home to some of the most unique species on earth. Many endangered bird species call these islands home, including the forest bird known as the akiapōlā’au. It has a very specialized bill shape to enable it to pick insect larvae out of tree branches.

1. What is your OC’s name? Kimiko Ijichi 2. What is your OC’s gender? DFAB - Cis - she/her 3. What is your OC’s sexual orientation? Demi-asexual! 4. How old are they? I typically rp her as 16, but I like to imagine her in her late teens or early 20s 5. What species are they- human, animal, alien, robot, none of the above? Human 6. What is their family like? Do they have one? Yes!  She’s an only child with a mother and father.  Gengyo is a very loving and passionate father, though tends to be neurotic, paranoid, and spoils his daughter to no end.  Ritsuko is also a loving mother who puts compassion for others as a first priority, but has been struggling with her dysthymia and thus has been a less enthusiastic parent in Kimiko’s life.  More info on Gengyo here, and more info on Ritsuko here! 7. Who is their best friend? Why? Her designated best friend was and forever will be Isaki Matsuna.  Kimiko refuses to refer to anyone else as a best friend.  Isaki had been with Kimiko since early elementary school.  Her typical form of expressing affection was through taunting, and while that did seem odd to Kimiko, Isaki truly did care for and look out for her.  They were complete foils of each other; ultimately, they were perfect contrasts. 8. Do they have a partner/significant other? Why are they together/not together? Zak & I are working on a ship, but we have yet to really rp the start of it -- so no. 9. What is their most prized possession? Why is it so important? A ribbon from a beginner’s level riding competition!  It was the only competition she rode in, and she only got 7th place (they gave ribbons to all the competitors), but Isaki was there to train her, to cheer for her and put it in a really fancy frame.  The framed ribbon is nailed right above her desk at home! 10. Do they prefer to be warm or cold? She prefers to be chilly. 11. If they could only eat one food for the rest of their life, what would it be? No way would she settle for this. 12. Is there anything they’d like to change about themselves physically? She really wishes she had long hair like Isaki’s.  Down to the butt. But she would never be able to manage it. 13. Who is the most important person in their life? Isaki was and always will be her inspiration; but from someone who is living, her father!  Although he’s eccentric, he’s the light of her life, as is she to him! 14. Are they a cat person? A dog person? An okapi person? Birds!!  She’d love to have an African gray parrot when she retires!  Calm, friendly cats seem like nice companions, too. 15. What sort of books do they like to read (if they like to read)? Mystery, thriller, crime, autobiographies and memoirs, and books on psychology mainly.  She doesn’t strictly stay with these genres, though. 16. What’s their favorite thing to do on a rainy weekend? Turn on the news channel or turn on the radio and listen to the police scanner.  Arrange her blossoms from her flower pressing into little designs to frame.  Study, ofc.  And go shopping. 17. Where were they born? Hiroo, Shibuya 18. Where do they want to live? She wouldn’t mind staying in Japan, but doesn’t need to stick with where she’s living now (Ikebukuro).  She does prefer big cities, though. 19. Do they have a job? As a student, no.  But during college she’d probably get a part time job as a waitress or something before getting her internship.  Then she’d intern at a therapy facility only to start work as a psychologist & therapist.  Slowly but surely, she’d move her way on to more difficult, struggling people involved with touchy cases.  But that wouldn’t be until she’s in her mid-30s. 20. If they could work anywhere, where would it be? Chicago.  A big city full of crime. 21. Do they use any sort of weapon? If not, what would they want if they could have one? When she starts to work as a criminal psychologist with rather dangerous people, authorities would prompt her to keep a taser on her.
22. Do they have any sort of special power/what power would they want? Nope.  Wouldn’t want any.
23. What’s their fashion sense? Form-fitting comfy young hipster librarian with pastels.
24. What do they think of snakes? Interesting, but keep them away from her or so help me God.
25. What is their biggest pet peeve? Regarding someone as a bad person for mistakes they have made in the past.
26. What is their greatest fear? Not being recognized for her work in her department, and that she won’t be able to help any of her clients or the police force.
27. Do they have any sort of disability, disorder, or health issue? I am thinking about her having dysthymia like her mom, or some other form of depression, since trauma can be “passed down” and she’s gone through a lot.  Still trying to figure out where and how that’d fit though.  She’s also lactose intolerant if that qualifies here.
28. Who is the person they hate the most in their life? She tries not to hate, and she doesn’t truly hate anyone, but her ex-boyfriend Hoitsu Mifune is someone she really, truly, strongly dislikes.
29. Is there anyone they want to be more like? Isaki.  She was always super cheerful, fun-loving, spontaneous, and very go with the flow.
31. Their home is on fire- what do they do? Get out of there according to the fire escape plan she and her family have practiced.
32. Do they like children? Yes!!  While rowdy ones tend to annoy her a bit, she still likes them all the same!
33. Would they rather take a short cut or take the scenic route? Depends on where she’s going.  If it’s a lazy day with no plans, scenic route always.
34. What’s their strongest belief? If you don’t care for others, you’re not human; you’re a monster.
35. What’s their opinion on lying? It can come in handy from time to time, so long as it’s not meant to harm anyone.
38. Which family member are they closest to, if any? Her father as of lately.
39. Do they ever want to get married and/or have kids? YES. YES. YES. YES. yes.
40. What was the hardest decision they ever had to make in their life? Going to see Isaki’s father in the hospital while he was on his death bed.
41. What was the happiest day of their life? Not sure.
43. How did they meet their last/current/future significant other? Or their best friend, if non-applicable? She met Isaki in elementary school when they were partnered up together to do a report.  They were inseparable after that.  After Isaki’s death, Kimiko met Hoitsu when she was 15 through a teammate on the tennis team.  They were together for nine months before she ended it.
44. If they were a class in a fantasy RPG, what class would it be? Probably a cleric.
45. Do they have any birthmarks or scars that they’re embarrassed by? She does have some birthmarks running up her legs and some on her chest, but she’s not embarrassed by them.
46. What’s their favorite color? Lavender
47. Do they have any piercings or tattoos? Do they want any/any more? Her ears are pierced, but that’s it.  She’s content with that.
48. Have they ever tried drugs or alcohol? Nope!
49. Are they an idealist or a realist? Idealist
50. Are they more introverted or extroverted? Extroverted!
51. What is their main goal in life? To become a criminal psychologist.
52. What are they willing to sacrifice to accomplish that goal? Her time, her well being, her friends.
53. Would they ever kill somebody (what would they consider a justifiable reason to kill someone?) Nope!  Not at all.
54. Have they ever kissed someone? Do they want to? She kissed Hoitsu a few times, though he was uninterested by it.  She likes romance, so I guess she wants to?
55. Have they always been comfortable with their sexual/gender identity, or is it something they’ve struggled with? No, she doesn’t even know she is demi-asexual.  She just thinks she’s uninterested because she isn’t ready to be sexually intrigued by someone.  Which is technically true.
56. Do they have any special ability or marking that sets them apart from others of their species/race? Why is it so remarkable or strange? Nnno?
58. If they had a Tumblr, what would they blog about? TBFH. she’d probably be either a studyblr or post about psychology and self care.
59. Any kinks or fetishes? Rich-Looking People.
60. If they only had one day left to live, what would they do? Say her goodbyes to her friends and family, then cry.
61. If they found a wallet with the equivalence of 200 dollars in it, what would they do? Find the ID and report it to the police to be given back.
62. If they live in a world without magic/without mainstream magic, do they believe in magic? Excluding Kiyo, no she doesn’t believe in it.
63. If they could have any pet ever, what would it be? AFRICAN GRAY PARROT. PLEASE.
64. Who is the person they admire most? Why? Isaki; go back to #7 and #29
65. Do they think they are attractive? Yes!
66. What is their biggest regret? Not asking for Isaki and her family to stay home the night of the crash.
67. What would they do for a klondike bar? she’d kill a man
68. The most important person in their life has been bitten by a zombie/whatever qualifies as a zombie in their world. Do they put them out of their misery, or try to find an alternative? Find an alternative.  If it resulted in having to kill her father, then she’d kill herself afterwards.
69. Is there anyone in their life they just can’t say no to? Why? Her mother; she knows she’s struggling with a lot of things and can’t seem to balance all she needs to, so she wants to help her in any way possible.
70. Are they more math, science, or art oriented? Science!
71. Is there anything they like that would be considered geeky in their world? Forensics??? Maybe?  Just knowing and spewing weird trivia about it?
72. Did they/would they leap at the call to adventure, or were they/would they have to be dragged along? If asked, she’d happily tag along, so long as safety is guaranteed.
73. Do they think there is more to life than whatever they are doing right now? Oh yeah.
75. What’s their most positive trait? She’s utterly compassionate.
76. What’s their fatal flaw? She’s utterly compassionate -- to the point where she needs to baby those who are struggling, which in turn sacrifices her well being and ultimately doesn’t help those she’s caring for.  Savior complex tbh.
77. What do their friends/family/teammates find most annoying about them? She’s loud, most jokes go over her head, she’s blunt, and she probably is nosy about their lives.  She just has to know if they need her.
78. What are their biggest strengths? She knows how to remain calm and rational during a panicked event; compassionate; ambitious; does her best not to be judgmental.
79. What are their weaknesses? She has a savior complex; very invasive about personal lives; self-sacrificial; depressed; spoiled.  Fun fun.
80. What is most memorable about their appearance? Uhh either her height or her eyebrows?
82. Do they dwell on the past, or live in the moment? OH BOY.  She preaches about living in the moment, and accepting and learning from the past to progress in The Now.  BUT.  She dwells.
83. Why is their main goal so important to them? What set them on that path? Becoming a criminal psychologist interested her at the age of nine; it was said to be an exciting job that paid very well.  But after Isaki’s death and evidence to show that she was involved with drug use/dealing and underage gambling, Kimiko changed her mindset.  She now wants to become one since she knows criminals are still people.  She wants to help them in any way she can, to help them lead healthy lives again.
84. Do they believe that people are inherently good? YES. She’s adamant about it.
87. Is there any other fictional character you would compare them too, personality or appearance-wise? tbh I did start to design her with traits from Ishimaru and Kirigiri.  So I guess them?
89. What sort of music do they/would they like? Pop!  Soft pop about romance is typically what she listens to when she’s doing her work.
90. What do they consider the worst evil in the world? Abuse, cruelty and neglect to children, as that traumatizes them and sets them up for a difficult life, only to repeat the abuse to their children.
91. What’s the closest they’ve been to dying (or, if they’re already dead, how did they die)? She attempted suicide soon after Isaki’s father died in the hospital, as he was the last of her immediate family who was living.  She attempted by hanging, but her knot was lousy and undid itself.
93. Do they like their name? Is there any name they’d rather have? She does!  Ijichi is a name rather well-known since her father’s family has an attorneys practice starting with her great grandfather Ijichi.
94. What is the significance of their name? Kimiko ( 君子 ) means “noble child”; Ijichi ( 伊地知 ) I cannot find the meaning of for the life of me. Italy, earth, knowledge? idk
95. Have they ever been bullied? Have they ever bullied anyone? There’s always bullying in the school yard; she’s never been horribly bullied, nor worried too much about it.  Isaki was the one who would usually torment others, so Kimiko was just her henchman.
96. Are they a light or heavy sleeper? Average?
97. What do they dream about when they sleep? idk, random things. Dreams are weird.
98. Do they prefer an urban or a rural setting, or something else? She does like rural settings to stay at for a while, but ultimately she’s a big fan of urban settings.
99. Is there any moment or event that they feel defines their life and who they are now? Isaki’s death.
100. Why is this character important? To you, and/or to their world? Oh man.  When I get an idea for an OC, it’s always in a short spurt, so pretty much all my OCs are really under-developed.  But for whatever reason, I stuck with developing Kimiko.  RPing her also helped SO MUCH in terms of figuring out why she is the way she is and adding new traits and perspectives to her. idk.  I just love her a lot and I’m glad my pals here like her as much as they do. ;;;

Regeneration only occurs while in metallic state.  When in metallic state, user’s weight is increased.
Faceclaim: Sebastian Stan
Biography:
Born in December of 2008 to Magnus and Valeria, a first generation Norwegian immigrant couple, Erick had a normal American childhood growing up.  Erick’s father Magnus worked as a police officer while his mother worked as an overnight trauma nurse at the local hospital so they could save enough money to put Erick through college.  Erick participated in the stereotypical activities for a young teenager, playing football throughout high school while maintaining a solid GPA that would have earned him a scholarship almost anywhere in the country.  Surprising both of his parents however, Erick turned down his scholarship offers and joined the military as an airborne infantryman.  Erick spent the next decade of his life in the military, bouncing from conflict to conflict at the behest of his government, putting boot to ass wherever it was needed.
It was during one of these first deployments that Erick discovered his power.  His convoy was ambushed during a routine patrol and the vehicle Erick was riding in was destroyed.  When his teammates went to check for survivors, nobody expected to find anyone.  Instead the discovered Erick, shielding a fellow soldier as the flames reflected off his silvery skin.  His squad kept it quiet for the time, mostly discounting their recollections as stress induced hallucinations.  However, the outbreaks continued with increasing frequency and his power became a kind of local legend amongst the teams.  As CARMA rose to prominence Erick realized what that meant for Metas and left the military and government as a whole, returning to school to earn his bachelor’s degree.  During his time at the university, Erick heard the rumblings of a Rebel Movement and what it meant for thus Metahumans looking to make a place for themselves.  Equipped with this knowledge, Erick made his way to Pansaw, California to offer his assistance.
Erick spent about 6 months with the Rebels, teaching them what he could of his military tactics and strategies.  Most importantly however, he tried to help the Rebels grow, both as people secure in their powers, and as leaders and soldiers in a resistance.  It was during this time that Erick met and then fell in love with, Hope Ramirez.  She reminded Erick that there was still good in the world, despite everything that he’d seen.  Which was why when she was captured by CARMA, Erick went insane.  With the help of one of Hope’s friends, Erick conducted a lightning raid on CARMA’s main facility, rescuing Hope and getting her away from their clutches.  Unfortunately for Erick, the jail break occurred at the same time CARMA raided the Rebel Base.  Devastated by his perceived failure, Erick once again threw himself into the Rebels, pushing himself, and everyone else, harder than he ever had before.
Just as the Rebels were establishing their new base, Erick received a message from an old military friend that turned his whole world upside down.  His friend had developed metahuman abilities and was being hunted by CARMA.  Leaving everyone behind without a word, Erick travelled back to the East Coast to try to bring his friend to the relative safety of Pansaw and the Rebels.  During their escape, CARMA forces caught up with them and a fight ensued.  During the struggle, Erick’s friend threw himself in front of a bullet meant for Erick, forgetting that in his metallic state, the bullet wouldn’t have hurt him.  This loss devastated Erick and he fled, travelling aimlessly around the country, never stopping in one place for very long.  Without realizing it, Erick’s travels continued to carry him west until once more he found himself on the outskirts of Pansaw, wondering if there was still a life for him there.

Toronto is Getting Its First International Art Biennial, Starting This Weekend
A former car dealership on Lake Shore Blvd E has been given a major makeover. As the site of the first Toronto Biennial of Art, the industrial space is filled with contemporary art by Canadian and international artists, spanning installations, videos, illustrations, interactive exhibits and more. In addition to the Lake Shore location, the Biennial also has a presence at Mississauga’s Small Arms Inspection Building, as well as at over a dozen other spots across Toronto including the Ontario Place Cinesphere and the Bentway.
An undertaking five years in the making, Toronto’s first Art Biennial is something the city’s art community has long been hoping for, and it has been thoughtfully curated so that the city plays a far greater role than just host. For the inaugural edition of the art festival, programming is built around the city’s waterfront, which is undergoing urban renewal at a faster pace than anywhere else in North America, and has also been home to indigenous people long before Toronto became a city—for at least 12,000 years. In the spirit of honouring and celebrating those underrepresented histories, the Biennial seeks to engage with the ancient geographical area as well as the communities who have seen it subjected to the vagaries of colonization, mass settlement and industrialization.

“One of the Biennial’s objectives is to raise awareness about indigeneity in this region in the context of art and programming that asks us to reconsider how we are in relation with each other, the land, and our environment,” says the festival’s Executive Director, Patrizia Libralato.
Titled The Shoreline Dilemma and curated by curated by Candice Hopkins and Tairone Basti, the inaugural edition explores the implications of what is often known as the “coastline paradox,” through the lens of Toronto’s ever-changing shoreline. This exploration is in service of a larger question: What does it mean to be in relation? More than 90 local and international participants have responded to and expanded on this question about interpersonal relationships as well as our relationship to the environment through their art.

Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and the curation of artists participating in the Biennial reflects that diversity: they come from over 40 places of origin, including Brazil, France, Guatemala, Iran, Thailand and the United States as well as Nunavut and Indigenous communities in Canada, Colombia, Mexico and New Zealand. 50 percent of the Biennial’s artists identify as women, roughly 65 percent are people of colour, and 25 percent are indigenous. The event organizers are expecting over 400,000 visitors to attend the Biennial over the course of its 72 days to view over 100 works of art, including 20 new commissions made specifically for the event.
Artists at the inaugural festival include Toronto-based Luis Jacob, who is presenting a series of photographs along with archival maps, reports and street views documenting the shifting narratives of Toronto; Vancouver-based Sioux artist Dana Claxton, whose series of portraits mounted on LED fireboxes features indigenous women draped in their cultural belongings—beaded necklaces, feathered jewellery and embroidered bags; Kiwi Lisa Reihana, whose 64-minute video “brings to life Māori and Pacific Indigenous peoples’ relationships with their cultural knowledge and spaces,” and Mexico City-based Fernando Palma Rodríguez, whose installation of robotic monarch butterflies, the only species to migrate between Mexico and Canada, reflects on their decline due to climate change.

The ‘life support system of the biosphere’ is in peril
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/the-life-support-system-of-the-biosphere-is-in-peril/
The ‘life support system of the biosphere’ is in peril
Don’t forget the little guys. (NASA/)
An elephant is hard to miss. An amoeba is less so. In some ways, it’s unsurprising that microbes—bacteria, fungi, amoebas, and alga alike—have been overlooked in the fight to figure out how climate change is influencing our planet’s animals. But understanding how microbes influence climate change (and vice versa) is essential to understanding what’s happening to our world. That’s the argument captured in a new consensus paper authored by 33 microbiologists and published this week in Nature Reviews Microbiology.
“Simply put, the microbial world constitutes the life support system of the biosphere,” the authors write. Microbes are at the bottom of every food web, and live in places on Earth that nothing else can. They were here long before other forms of life, and life relies on their functions. But despite this fundamental influence, how microbes fit into climate change is still poorly understood.
“Microbes are everywhere, and they’re dynamic,” says Rick Cavicchioli, a microbiologist at the University of New South Wales Sydney and the paper’s main author. They can also have a massive impact on climate change, he says. Take methanogens, the microbes that produce all of the methane in the world. They’re found in the bodies of ruminant animals like cows, in rice paddies, in melting permafrost, and everywhere else that methane comes from, and he says they’re a prime example of how human interactions can produce this potent greenhouse gas.
While many of us acknowledge that cows create methane, we cut out the crucial intermediary step: the methanogens that live in cow digestive tracts. “We farm ruminant animals and we farm so many of them that they put out very significant quantities of methane. We need to understand the connection between the microbe and the animal, and the choices that we make as a lifestyle,” Cavicchioli says.
Changing our diets to decrease the number of cows (and methanogens) we farm is one mitigation method, he says. But another is exploring what circumstances can raise or lower the number of methanogens living inside each cow and thus the amount of methane they produce. In Western Australia, researchers are exploring feed additives for this purpose.
Although the paper discusses a few different places where microbes are important, its main focus is on marine species. The ocean is changing faster and more drastically than almost anywhere else, and approximately 90% of the biomass in the ocean is made up of microbes, which perform crucial functions such as fixing carbon and nourishing animals all over the food web. But like many things about the ocean, the authors write, marine microbes are poorly understood, the authors write.
“What [the authors] said best is that microbes really are the unseen majority,” says Christopher Walter, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minnesota who was not involved in the paper. But when it comes to which creatures get the most attention, “our concern is a little bit tilted in terms of what we care about.”
Although visible animals like birds and elephants have been the historical focus of studies of climate change’s impacts on the natural world, microbes have started to make more of an impact in the past five years, Walters says. “There are so many national labs now that are studying nutrient cycling and looking at putting them into these large global climate models,” he says.
But it’s a slow change, and getting the public to understand the importance of microbes is even slower, says Cavicchioli. He’s currently involved in an effort to improve microbial literacy in schools from kindergarten onwards. “Most people have a pretty poor understanding of anything too small or anything too big,” he says. “There’s an urgency to improve literacy and there’s an urgency to understand the links between microbes and climate change.”

What are the different kinds of pests which affect our day to day life?
Bed Bugs – Bed bugs are wood settler which causes disturbance in your body, as well as red welts, happen in the place where it bites. Bed bugs are very tiny and can’t be easily detected. It also multiplies very fast.
Termites – It is another wood-eating insect that ruins all the wooden furniture or articles in your house, office, hotel or kitchen. You will find termites during monsoons. They are also known as “silent destroyers” because they quietly chew through wood, flooring. There are 2000 termites’ species you can find in all over the world.
Rats- we all know that rat causes plague disease. But, apart from that rat is equally destructive as termites as it can enter into your house through a small hole and nibble everything such as food, wire, clothes, books, cinderblocks etc.
Ants- They are small insects which generally come in winter season but can cause trouble for the whole year. Ants are very frustrating when they get into your home or kitchen. Depending upon the colonies they live, one colony have millions of ants. Ants mostly destroy our food and the red ants can cause irritation and swelling in the biting part of the body.
Mosquitoes- With the rising of garbage and drainage system problem, breeding of mosquitoes, house flies and fruit flies are a cause of concern. They carry life-threatening diseases like Dengue, malaria, and Chikungunya. They can’t be wholly removed by using over the top sprays and repellents. Experts can use extra precautionary measures to remove mosquitoes from your house.
Cockroaches- Cockroaches are around since the time of Dinosaur and it is believed that roaches are the only species on the earth which survive a nuclear attack. Thus, they are highly flexible to most insecticides. They are commonly found in warm environment areas like kitchen and hotels. These irritants can cause bacterial diseases, allergies and trigger asthma attack, especially in children. They spread nearly 33 kinds of bacteria in your house.

Note
Do all the oc questions for cole because i love him. :u or just do the ones u wanna answer for him
1. What is your OC’s favorite color?Cole’s favorite color would actually be Red, which is surprising given the amount of blacks he wears.
2. Does your OC collect anything? What do they collect?Cole actually does collect things! He collects apple seeds which he plans on using to create an orchard of his very own. That’s the dream anyhow.
3. What kind of things is your OC allergic to?I honestly don’t see Cole being allergic to anything. He’s rather lucky that way.
4. What kind of clothing does your OC wear?Cole wears more blacks and dark colors that he usually wears to blend into shadows easily. He doesn’t really have that much of a varierty between work clothes and normal clothes since they are mostly the same except his work clothes cover more.
5. What is your OC’s first memory? While I can’t say it’s his first memory that he has, one of his earliest is learning how to braid his late little sister’s hair with the help of his late Mother.
6. What’s your OC’s favorite animal? Least favorite?Cole’s pretty chill with animals over all. His favorites would be in the canine spectrum with a soft spot for Pomerainians. Least favorite would probably be any animals that decide to try to get at his seeds.
7. What element would your OC be?While I want to say darkness, I would say he’s more so earth. He’s a rather grounded type of person who’s usually pretty calm and hard working. That being said certain things will put him into pissed off mood that he can be rather reckless in depending on the situation. He’s also most at home in more rural areas and wooded areas than anywhere else.
8. What is your OC’s theme song? I don’t even know I barely listen to much music. You’re better than me at this aspect of characters hunbun.
9. Do you have a faceclaim / voiceclaim for your OC?No real face claim, You suggested Dark Magician’s voice and I kinda agree with that so that’s the closest to a voice claim he has.
10. What deadly sin would best represent your OC?He would be hands down Wrath, since his goal in life is revenge.
11. What are your OC’s hobbies?Cole enjoys hikes, climbing trees, building things, and he rather enjoys gardening. He’s got a basic knowledge of herbalism and sometimes dabbles in poisons, though its rare that he enjoys it too much since its part of work. He does hunt, but its more for survival than doing it for a hobby.
12. How patient is your OC? How hot-headed are they?It depends on the situation for him honestly. Cole can be very patient when he needs to be especially for his job. Though if you start talking about things he hates or the person he wants to kill for revenge in positive light, he’s rather hot headed. Family is also a topic best left uninsulted with Cole because he will try to kick your ass if you happen to insult his family.13. What is your OC’s gender / sexuality / race / species / etc.?Cole’s a male and bisexual really. He’s also human, though sometimes he can be a werewolf that’s form is a Pomeranian.
14. What foods does your OC like to eat? What are their least favorite foods?Cole absolutely loves apples of any variety; they make rather him nostalgic and are a comfort food for him. They basically remind him of his home, his family, and his childhood. His least favorite food would be oranges, since his parents were rival farmers with orange farmers.
15. If your OC could have any pet, what would they choose? Why?Cole would chose to have a Pomeranian dog as a pet.
16. What does your OC smell like? Cole probably smells like the woods and trees,
17. How do they make a living? What kind of job do they want / not want? What is their dream job? What do they think of their current job?Cole is an assassin, though he takes on other day jobs when help is needed around the town where the rebellion is stationed. He’ll do most manual labor for a quick buck. Earlier in life he’s had a job as a thief to get by and still sometimes resorts to rather small thefts if he’s strapped for the cash. Cole doesn’t really mind his current job since the main reason he went into that line of work was to assassinate the king out of revenge for his family and home town. His dream job is to become a farmer and start an apple orchard so he can have as many apple as he wants and be able to supply people who are hungry with food.
18. What are your OC’s greatest fears? Weaknesses? Strengths? His greatest fear is water, he cannot swim at all, and will avoid it like the plague. His strengths lie in stealth and agility.
19. What kind of music do they listen to? Do they have a favorite song?I have no idea, cole does strike me as a somber tunes sort of guy, with also a foundness of calm and mellow tunes.
20. If they came from their world to ours (if not already in our’s) how would they react? What would they do?Cole would freak out over apples being here and the different varieties that are available. He would then cry over the apples.
21. What personal problems/issues do they have? Pet peeves?Cole suffers a bit from PTSD, especially later on in life when he’s Married to Chase and they have kids. He’ll often have moments where he believes they are going to be killed and that he’ll be left all alone like he was back when his home town was destroyed. He’ll have moments when he will honestly break down in front of them for this reason. He also has reoccurring nightmares where he’ll relive that moment in life.
22. What kind of student were they/would they be in high school?Cole would be an okay student and mostly a loner. He’s have one friend, Kain, who he’d go along with on his adventures, but overall he’d be stand offish and quiet to most people. He’d probably get into fights though as well depending.23. What is a random fact about your OC? He absolutely adores his family and will do anything to keep them safe and sound as well as happy. 24. What is their outlook on life? What is their philosophy / what do they think in general about living?Well before he met and fell in love with Chase, he was willing to die for any chance at revenge he could get, it was his only reason for living for a long time and anything he did was to further his progress to that goal. After he falls in love his priorities change and he becomes protective of Chase in a sense, he starts to see his life in a better light and this intensifies when they have kids together. He becomes a devoted father and husband and lives to protect them and keep them safe, putting revenge to the back burner.25. What inspired you to create them / how did you create them? Were they originally a fancharacter? What was their personality / design like when you first made them? He was created to bring more focus on chase. He started off pretty one sided with assassination and snark was basically his character. He developed more over time.26. Who is the most important person in their life? Why? Who is the least important to them (that still has an impact and why?Anyone in his family is super important to him; Chase is super duper important and so is Hunter and Hannah. The most important I would say is Chase since she’s the biggest turning point in his life in a positive way. The least important is probably the King since he hates him with all his being.27. What kind of childhood did your character have?Cole grew up in a small town away from the castle and capital of the kingdom. It was mostly a self-sufficient town with a big emphasis on trading goods for money for taxes and what not. It was a rather close knit community as well with everyone knowing each other. He grew up on an apple orchard and was the oldest child. He grew up a long side his little sister and things were pretty good and rather peaceful. His childhood ended when the entire town was ravaged and destroyed by order of the king on suspicion of there being people of the rebellion there. No one was spared and eventually the place was burned to the ground. The only reason he had lived was due to dumb luck and the fact he was excellent at hiding.28. What kind of nervous habits do they have? Do they stim? Do they have any kinds of addictions? When Cole has episodes, he becomes a clinger. He will cling to who ever is around him at the time and cry.29. If they could choose their epitaph for their grave, what would they choose?I don’t actually know what he would choose. He’d probably chose something sappy and having to do with family though.30. Do they want to get married? Why or why not? Would they ever want kids? Do they have kids? Why?Cole would die in happiness to have any kind of family. The day he married Chase was probably the happiest day of his life, followed by the birth of Hunter and then the Birth Of Hannah. He cherishes them deeply and would do almost anything for them.31. What is their most traumatic memory/experience? What is their favorite memory? Most tramatic would be watching his home and everyone he knew being killed by the King. His favorite memory would be the day he and Chase got married. 32. If they could have one thing in the world, what would it be?That he doesn’t have already? Probably another kid LOL33. Would they ever kill someone? What would someone have to do to push them to kill someone? If they would kill someone, why?Yes he would and he has, for various reasons. He’s an assassin after all. 34. What social groups and activities does your character attend? What role do they like to play? What role do they actually play, usually?Cole isn’t social at all. He’d probably volunteer to feed the homeless though. 35. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories? He doesn’t do too much with imagination. He uses it more often than not to plan how to get around things stealthfully but other than that he doesn’t really have much of one.36. What does your character want most? What do they need really badly, compulsively? What are they willing to do, to sacrifice, to obtain?Family like mentioned before.37. What’s something that your character does, that other people don’t normally do?Avoid water like the plague and pretty sure most characters aren’t assassins.38. What would your character do with a million dollars? Buy every apple known to man then make the best orchard ever.39. What is in your characters refrigerator right now? On their bedroom floor? Nightstand? Garbage can?Knives, daggers, apples, some clothes, his place is rather small and bland when he lived by himself.40. Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where are they going? What do they wear? Who will they be with?He doesn’t dress up for anything really unless Chase wants that and he’s willing to go anywhere with her.41. What does your character do when they’re angry? Why?Storm off or start a fight, 42. Does your character have any scars? Where did they get them from? He has plenty of them. He has one on his check that his wife gave him, but I believe he actually asked her to do it and it was done to probably remind him of her while he was away for a while. 43. What was the most offensive thing your character had ever said?I don’t really know, it’d defiantly be about the king though.44. How does your character react/ accept criticism?I think he’d take ‘em well enough. 45. If your character was given a slice of pineapple pizza and they HAD to eat it (or something bad would happen), how would they react? Do they even LIKE pineapple pizza? He’d probably just eat it since it was food, and food can be scarce for him at times living by himself.46. Your character is given a voodoo doll of themself. What do they do with it? Do they see if it actually works? He’d probably either give it to chase not knowing what it was, or he’s stuff in a drawer or something.47. Can your character draw? What do they like to draw? Do they doodle? Not very well, he’s never really needed to. He can draw a very basic map if he has to.48. What were their parents like? How has that affected how they are as an adult? His parents were very good ones and they cared for him dearly. Cole was quite attached to them so losing them really did a number on him. Cole is a lot like his parents as a parent himself. He’s very caring towards his kids and willing to let somethings slide with them.49. Does your character like candy? Do they get sugar rushes? What are they like when they get a rush?Cole doesn’t mind em but he’s never gone out his way to have them.50. If your character was presented with imminent and unavoidable death/fatality, how would they react? Would they try to avoid death anyways? Would they try to make their last days count? Cole honestly would be okay with that to some extent and would spend his last day with his family and would try to make them all have good last memories that they can treasure when he’s gone. He probably wouldn’t even tell any of them that he was going to die either because he wants to protect them from that truth as long as he can. Cole would want to peacefully pass away being close to Chase, possibly cuddling her. I think maybe he’d let Chase in on what was going on, but defiantly not Hunter or Hannah.
