major john egan in the 1960’s stumbles upon one benny cross at a chicago bar and christens him buck like his friend from the war. curt lives and gale dies storyline. btw this is real life footage of how john watches benny play pool 🥹

When a Major strolls into the Stoplight Bar, Benny doesn’t concern himself with it. He expects a fight to break out in less than ten seconds — five, he guesses as he watches Zipco move to approach the large man. To his surprise it only takes fifteen seconds for the man to make Zipco laugh and even stranger, he’s buying him a beer and telling him to sit and enjoy the evening.

Benny gets caught staring, the man locking eyes with him but never one to back down Benny stares for a few more seconds before standing to leave, not bothering to tell anyone. He wasn’t interested in hanging around with any men in uniform.

But to his surprise Major Egan (he later finds out his name) becomes a reoccurring guest. “You look like my old friend Buck.” Are the first words he ever speaks to him, “We served together in ‘43. Air Force.”

Benny has nothing to say so he stays quiet.

“Quiet like him too.”

Deciding he’s had enough, Benny stands to leave. He whips his jacket off the chair, watching as Major Egan sits back with his legs spread no worry or attempts to try to get him to stay and that is something new. Benny’s always being asked to stay. To never leave. To stick around.

“Where is he then?” Benny relents, throwing the guy a bone.

Major Egan preens, smiling down at his lap before looking back up. Benny hates that he looks like he’s won something by getting him to speak to him, sitting there nonchalantly with no worry and holding himself above everyone else.

“Left him back in Germany,” he answers, losing his smile to a grimace as he tosses a shot back.

He wears grief as well as he wears his ridiculous jacket. With his broad shoulders tight and his dark hair slicked back, curling at the nape of his neck. Wrinkles at the corners of his eyes and his mouth — he does smile often.

“He’s better off,” Benny shrugs, dropping that and expecting to walk away and leave behind a guffawed officer, offended and maybe goad him into a fight but to his surprise, Major Egan only hums,

“yeah he is, kid.”

Until I weaken the love for Austin Butler and Callum Turner again. (Which is very unlikely so far because I'm crazy about Austin Butler. I don't understand how you can't do that either)

No one is wondering why I chose this motive. It is simple: Callum Turner as Major Bucky Egan and Austin Butler as Benny Cross are my absolute favorites at this point in time for what these two actors have accomplished.

We'll see what's to come.

9. What is your favorite dialogue you've written so far?

There's an exchange in chapter 2 that I really love, but I don't want to spoil it lol

As from chapter 1, I'm particularly fond of the passage where Callum confesses his tendency to get invested in people.

"My mom worried that I'd get too attached to people I worked with." Callum's voice carried a hint of self-deprecation. "She reckoned that I'll end up falling in love with every co-star I have."

When Austin looked at him with raised eyebrows, he threw his hands in the air.

"I was young and reckless. Stupid." The words came out in a rush, his cheeks flushing faintly. He wouldn't meet Austin's eyes now. "You know what it's like."

Austin wasn't sure he knew. But it was actually imaginable, what Callum would be like a couple years younger. All raw energy and unchecked enthusiasm, throwing himself headlong into everything—roles, relationships, life itself. Wearing his heart more openly on his sleeve, falling for someone simply because they shared the same creative space, the same dreams. Trying to keep things casual until he failed.

"Not that I fell in love with her out of stupidity," the other explained. "It's just—I get invested in people. Maybe too much sometimes."

The admission seemed to cost him something; his shoulders tensed as though bracing for judgment. He looked somewhat frustrated. Austin didn't understand why he'd feel that way. Didn't want him to.

"Well, you like people, there's nothing wrong about it. I like people, too," he half-joked, but he knew Callum would get that he meant it.

11. What scene are you most hyped for this chapter/fic?

The fight scene(s) (sort of)! They have some conflicts they need to work through.

And of course, their intimate encounters, which I felt quite nervous about writing...🥹

15. In as vague of terms as possible (to avoid spoiling), how do you anticipate this chapter/fic to end?

It will end on a very promising note. But I think there will be room left open too. What I want to show is how they could develop a romantic relationship despite all the forces pulling them apart, and I hope the ending feels realistic enough for readers to imagine what comes next.

Non-verbal communication. I love how Austin feels that Callum is looking at him.

The speed at which Austin's blue steel change to a smile when he sees Callum always makes me happy.

He touches Callum's shoulder again. Is this the sixth nickel already?

Callum touches Austin behind Barry's back. Poor Barry looks like a sleepy disoriented child between horny playful parents.

Not exactly Clegan, but I like this moment, I like the way Tom Hanks reacts to Callum's arrival. And Austin looks at them so sweetly.
