TROLLS
Disclaimer: this post actually hurt me to write.
Trolling.
One of the most pointless and meanlingless cries for attention the internet has ever seen to date. For those of you who dont know what an internet "troll" is; it is someone who goes and posts negative, hate-filled and inflamatory comments on others social media in order to provoke an audience and purposely cause upset.
I am a social media fanatic and I see trolls commenting on the internet famous people I follow. To this day, it still baffles me how one can go a comment things like "you look ugly in this lol", or "kill yourself b*tch", just for a laugh? How is that funny? What do they benefit from this? Does the hate they ever get back from these disgusting comments ever affect them? Probably not.
Despite the fact, multiple social media platorms have reviewed their methods of blocking harrasment; this is not going to stop the trolls.
- You can delete a comment; they can comment again. - You can block a user; they can make a new account. - You can delete your social media; but the trolls presence and their comments may forever play in your mind.
Twitter has made it easier to report the comments to police, but what are they going to be able to do about it? Most of the time, people do not take these comments as seriously as what they should hence why society are loosing so many of their teens to suicide.
Thankfully, I have never experienced the full wrath of an internet troll who tells one to go "kill themselves", however I have experienced many different levels of anonymous hate as I grew up. From the occasional "anon" message on my old Tumblr, to other anonymous messages on my old favourite "ask.fm". These negative comments are not easy to handle, especially when you're a people pleasing adolescent who goes out of her way to not step on anyones toes. I always use to ask; why am I getting this? Who is it from? I can't recall a time I've recently upset someone? Maybe their comments are true... But they weren't and I knew they weren't and from this, I learnt to grow a thick skin. However, despite having the thicker skin now, the hate as stopped. Is this because the people around me and on my social media accounts have all matured?
If this is the case, who looks after our middle and high school students in their times of needs? Are we educating them on bullying correctly, or should we be putting new methods in place to protect ourselves from trolls.
