i rmr when all the initial meta around endgame was coming out people were talking about steve being depressed and whatnot and it's like well yeah but he's BEEN depressed, like he woke up alone in this century and he kept going, now i can understand it being worse this time after finding a family and getting bucky back and losing them all except of course that's not why endgame steve was on about so like......the people writing meta were trying to connect these things that of course weren't really there on screen because that simply wasn't our steve

but i think it really could've been SO interesting to see this is the thing that finally makes steve stay down like he's lost so much and he just CAN'T keep fighting like i get some people think that's what they were going for but considering the ending......it's really not. and so i'm just thinking about a version after iw, maybe he gets some of the thor treatment except not turning his depression into a dumb fatphobic joke lol and maybe nat and others are trying to get through to him and it just doesn't work and then we get some flashbacks (which you could have done for all the original avengers actually which would be particularly important for bruce and nat and clint who did not have their own trilogies) including his mom telling him "you always stand up" and THAT being the thing to finally get him moving like it would've been such a perfect way to finally show sarah rogers some respect and ACTUALLY show steve really struggling instead of whatever they tried to do with him in that movie

if you could rewrite stuckys reunion in bucharest, how would you do it?

To be really honest? I would rewrite the entirety of the third Cap movie and make it Serpent Society.

We’ll never know what was planned for Bucky in Cap 3, but there was a clear priority shift in the Cap franchise after CATWS that not only sidelined Bucky’s story but also Steve’s. The bigger impact on Bucky is the 2 years of inactivity, which recharacterises him as someone who defaults to peace, or at least conflict avoidance.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that! And I love that particular flavour of MCU!Bucky. But I also love all the revenge tour Bucky fics fandom has given us. And really, this says more about me as a writer than a fan, I think I would enjoy writing that particular version of Bucky than the quietly enjoying his life in peace Bucky.

So yeah, if I were to write a Stucky reunion in Bucharest, it would be in front of a burning Hydra hideout, Bucky on guard and inscrutable, and Steve probing cautiously to see exactly how much Bucky was left in there.

The sweet, proper emotional reunion would have to come much later. The angst adds flavour 🤭

Stage of the Writing Process: Rewrites

Synopsis:

On the planet Somnia, there are two worlds, hopelessly intertwined: the physical world, and the dream. In the dream, anything is possible.

The city of Saint's Shoal is in a state of unrest. A dreamshaper by the name of Azura Lazuli seeks vengeance, and she will stop at nothing to see it through. The responsibility falls to Orian Goldeneye, mythical child of balance, to stop her before her actions harm innocents. But he's only one dreamshaper, and every battle between them ends in a draw. He's getting desperate.

So what happens when two strangers get tossed into a prison designed for dreamshapers? An opportunity is siezed, and it just might tip the scales in his favor.

But time's running short, and Orian's new allies, Jas and Killian, may be far more than meets the eye. Will they aid him and put an end to Azura's reign of terror? Or will they bring more problems than he started with?

Poll time again!

After posting all the finished fics I had lying around, let's now turn to almost finished multi-chapter fics. The hope being that once I start posting them and receive feedback, I will be motivated to finish them. Again, all fics summarized below.

Amnesia: 7 or so chapters (5 and a half already written), around 15k in total, inspired by MissMorwen's Burn With Me. Natasha gets amnesia and only remembers Bucky as a colleague from the Red Room. Also, actual plot.

Oh no, he's hot: 14 or so chapters (11 and a half already written), set after Civil War except Bucky doesn't get frozen. Nat decides to seduce Bucky and they start a strangers-with-benefits thing that turns into a friends-with-benefits thing that ... I’m sure you can guess. Very smutty.

Breaking: 21k, not yet chaptered. Red Room fic. Natasha finds a weakness with the Soldier and keeps prying and prying.

I'm not the one who wants to hurt you: 15 or so chapters (11 and a half already written), around 20k in total. A rewrite of my first fanfic, except this time with a functional plot. Set after CATWS. Bucky seeks out Nat because he needs help remembering some stuff.

ppl pushing "house husband bucky" in the next installments perplex me bc either they do not understand how the superhero genre he's in works or how character arcs work or they really just wanna be like the marvel writers and remove him from the story without letting him have a proper character arc

bc for better or worse, Steve's arc is done, we all have deep deep criticisms, but his arc is done and dusted so if either of them get relegated and pushed out of the story into the background role of house husband... it's Steve bc there's not much else for him to do now

meanwhile Bucky's arc was constantly literally fridged via cryofreezing and dusting and he was never allowed to progress or even participate like a regular character

he barely even got to do fight scenes post-catws and when he does he's usually separated/demoted from the other supersoldiers-- see: Infinity War and Bucky randomly disappearing into the background without fighting alongside Steve and robbed of Old Guard-style interactions with Steve (but while still making the time to let Thor interact w Steve bc Thor doesn't get backgrounded/sidelined like Bucky)

it feels like ppl really don't give a shit about Bucky as a character and replicate Marvel's attitudes toward Bucky, fridging into the background and arrest all possible character arcs, except it's even weirder bc ppl want Steve to come back into his old hero role (I do too!) but shove Bucky into "house husband" and further refuse to let him have an arc??

it's as if they too think Bucky is too "broken" or "villainous" or "weak" to have the hero role like Steve, falling into the same victimblaming and ableism. again, a lot of self-proclaimed stucky fans seem to unironically replicate the Marvel franchise's attitude toward the characters, the attitude that decentered them and poorly executed Steve's arc

maybe these ppl just don't understand how stories work, but I'd be incredibly mad if Steve came back if Bucky gets booted off the hero/protagonist role to do it, it makes no sense narratively.

Steve already had a trilogy of him growing up being rescued by Bucky and then becoming a superhero and having his main goal be saving Bucky, it'd be much more narratively powerful to have a trilogy of Bucky finding and rescuing Steve in the 21st century instead, where he's protagonist and where we the audience finally get to see Bucky's inner world, his thoughts, his feelings, his motivations, his personality. idk why ppl who claim to like Bucky would want to get rid of the chance of Bucky finally being a proper character again and finally a protsgonist to instead shove him back into the background like phase 3 did

like why do some shippers seem so scandalized at the idea of finally having Bucky being a hero and a protagonist and a character who can be explored in depth again finally.. we should be more worried about harassing marvel to bring back Steve and have him be part of Bucky's arc and adjusting to being brought back by Bucky into a new era with new teammates

I get what you're saying. I do. It constantly feels as if Marvel doesn't give a shit about Bucky. And I agree that with the arc they have Bucky on right now (which I am not a fan of because it just seems more and more like every time Marvel touches Steve or Bucky they do more damage to who the characters are. Not even just from a stucky point of view. Steve would never leave the family he created in the new century. He would be unable to rest in the retirement of living a "normal" life. And Bucky is just... not a villain) it makes no sense to make him retire right now. Also, yeah, if they brought Steve back to make him the hero just to push Bucky to the sidelines, I would be upset.

I have to say, though, from what I've seen around fandom, people aren't pushing househusband Bucky in the MCU specifically, they're making their own little alternative universes where they bend canon to give Bucky a retirement. Usually, they ignore or rewrite Endgame. Househusband Bucky is, again, from what I've seen, something people are creating to give Bucky autonomy (his choice to stop fighting) and relaxation (assuming he'd enjoy domesticity after so long on the front lines) after the MCU didn't give him any real recovery or therapy.

Househusband Bucky isn't about him being weak or not able, nor is it scandalization of letting Bucky be a hero. It's about giving him choices--likely drawn from Bucky in Wakanda miserably asking, "where's the fight?" As he's given a new arm... another weapon.

It's one interpretation of his [Bucky's] emotions. To some people, he's exhausted, and he deserves retirement in whatever form he chooses--house husband or otherwise. And to other people, he's not done yet.

Different opinions for different people. It doesn't have to be that deep all the time, y'know? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Househusband is a cute idea, and stucky can be treated like dolls by some people to different extents--they, we, play with them in all sorts of different ways. I don't think there's a wrong way to create or play with fictional characters. I get that different interpretations can hurt when they don't align with your own, but at the end of the day, it's all good. What unites us is that MCU royally fucks over our favorites 🤣

i pray that one of our gay stevebucky warriors gets in a position of influence in marvel and rewrites their dynamic to be like mcu except if mcu actually followed thru properly with stucky's relationship. imagine all the Howlies-era team comics they could make w that 💖 or a WS run where they include the scene of Steve and Bucky going to the museum at the end together like in the earlier drafts of CATWS 😌 or comics of them on the run from the law together🔥 there's so many possibilities

yes!!!and to add more: wish we could have little treats of stevebucky in the mcu canon, but not just in the movies, bits of fun facts about their life together in some prequal comic and a random fact being throw at some mcu show, rather than steve's sexual life being discussed by strangers 😭

I'm also gonna include concepts I've started writing bc I think about some of them wayyy too much.

In no particular order tho...

1. This House Had Swing In It - concept that bloomed when I was a baby in fandom back in 2021 and I have not stopped thinking about it since. I did write and publish some of it but I have been in the incredibly slow process of rewriting and reworking it. It's my baby. Just need it to grow a little more in order to get it to where I want it ❤️

2. Filthy Impetuous Souls - I almost trashed this one and started all over when I thought it wasn't good enough and that I couldn't make it work. Became one of my most popular fics to date and it's one of my most favourites to reread.

3. Dirty Dishes - an earlier one that I'm still in love with to this day. I can literally read it and watch it in my mind like a movie. A comfort fic for me.

4. Impressions on the Inside of Your Thigh - my first time doing smut and it's my most read fic on AO3 to date 😅 I don't go back to it very often but I'm still proud of myself on how good the vibes and setting are.

5. Aftermath - currently in the work rn. I'm so proud of my brain for dreaming this one up, I cannot wait to share it with everyone. Basically the aftermath (lmao) of CATWS and Bucky finds himself lost in northern Appalachia.

I haven't watched all of What If (and have no plans to) but is it just me or is there are dearth of POCs from all CC-centric episodes (except the one where she worked with Star-Lord T'Challa for some reason)?

There are shrinking men and Hulk and the Scarlet Witch in 1602, but no Sam? Don't get me wrong, I do love the Scott-Bucky interactions but...Sam would have slotted in perfectly to that bickering frenemies role. And Sam being deleted wholesale from the CATWS rewrite still makes me astounded. Like you had time to fit in Rumlow but no time for Sam?

Going back to the CATFA episode, the only Howlies to get a speaking role was Bucky and Dum Dum Dugan, two white characters. Gabe had one shot lasting for about a split second where he was in the foreground. You'd barely even notice Jim Morita being there.

It seems the CC-centric episodes, especially when it's ripping off the original CA franchise, has a major colour problem.

📚 Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you recommend?

Oooh, there are...so many. Right now I will take any chance to praise @dharmasharks for her beautifully vivid, painfully tender (I know I keep saying that, but I really have no other word for how it makes me feel) historical AU fics which I'm enjoying so, so much as I go through them (If by any chance you see this—hopefully that doesn't sound too stalker-y, and if it does— apologies. It is entirely the fault of your compelling writing.) I'm not going to go into too much detail with individual commentary right now because my brain is at its limit + I've already yelled incoherently about Till there were no more wolves in the West on here and I've still yet to finish it (I'm so close! And it, like several of the other non-AU ones that I ended up reading ~on accident~, deserves a well-thought out response!), but I really, really recommend literally anything she writes. Maybe I'm biased on account of how all of the fics I've read hit just my preferred mix of characterization, angst, humor, historical detail and commentary and well-backed, well-worn history between Blorbos #1 and #2, replete with gentleness and conflict and truly electric dynamics (I mean that in every sense of the word. The sex is amazingly written, too.) but they are also just objectively wonderful. A+ on all counts.

Two other fics that I read somewhat recently: #1: The Name in the Mouth by Rave, which took me out at the fucking knees. Mindblowingly woven nonlinear narrative that very beautifully (and very, very painfully) examines Bucky's state post-CATWS, his trajectory from the helicarrier to Bucharest both physically and mentally, and his relationship to his Jewish identity. The voice felt so distinct, and everything from the storytelling structure and epistolary segments and contrasting bits of memory and present-day observations with both horror and a bit of humor scattered throughout to the dialogue and OCs and historical background (down to the sources referenced for real-life events) was absolutely pitch-perfect and often felt like an extremely well-timed and executed punch to the gut.

Fuck me. I'm gonna be thinking about this one for a long, long while.

2#: The Old Words by kvikindi, which, funnily enough, is another introspective, sprawling character study—this time of (predominantly TFATWS era-focused) Zemo. And look, it's not something I ever thought I would be all that into, however: this fic absolutely blew me away with its brutal introspection, the characters' dynamics (that somehow still feel true to canon whle being infinitely more thought out), and the near-intimidating level of care and detail paid to constructing both Zemo's personal (often horrifying) history and voice as well as a Sokovian history and culture, told in an almost mythical way and feeling as much like its own living, breathing thing as it does an omage to several Balkan countries. All in all, an impeccable, unexpected gem. 100% canon to me now, because it's exactly what I would've wanted to see if I'd told someone, "Hey, can you please rewrite the entirety of the shitshow that is the MCU's Sokovia to not be an insensitive, fumbling parody of something that is clearly based on a real country?"

🎨 If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

Uh, any? Honestly if anything I'd written ever made someone want to make fanart, I'd be honored. It'd knock me on my ass. But if I were to pick from the stuff I've posted on AO3, I'd have to say the bar dream scene from Orpheus between fresh off the helicarrier Bucky and dream!Steve. Or maybe something with the Howlies from See What the Boys In the Backroom Will Have, because that'd just be very fun.

Okay so normally I'm a Bucky girl but I've been reading a lot of Steve x Reader just to change things up a bit. One of my planned fics was a BxR fic based on something that happened to me but with a happy ending instead.

The original fic idea I had for CATWS anniversary, I don't think I'll have enough time to get done so...

I'm gonna rewrite one of my other planned fics to be a Steve x Reader for CATWS anniversary. I think this will work better for me and less scrambling to get something done. I think I'll still do my original CATWS fic at some point just to get the ideas out but it won't be for this event
