how many versions of cats were released on cd? I have the obc and olc versions so I was wondering if you knew what other versions there were, and if possible where to find them :D many thanks!
Hello Anon,
There are eighteen cast recordings:
Original London 1981 (both 2CD full recording and 1CD highlights)
Original Broadway 1982 (both 2CD full recording and 1CD highlights)
Vienna 1983 (1CD highlights)
Budapest 1984 (1CD highlights)*
Australia (Sydney) 1985 (2CD full recording)
Japan (Osaka) 1985 (2CD full recording)
Hamburg 1986 (2CD full recording)
Amsterdam 1987 (1CD highlights)
Paris 1989 (2CD full recording)
Japan (Nagoya) 1989 (2CD full recording)
Mexico 1991 (1CD highlights)
Warsaw 2004 (1CD highlights)*
Prague 2004 (1CD highlights)*
Dutch Tour 2006 (1CD highlights)
Italian Tour 2009 (1CD highlights)*
Japan (Tokyo) 2019 (2CD full recording)
2019 Movie (1CD highlights)
Vienna Revival 2021 (2CD full recording)
*Non-replica production, if that matters
In addition, there are a number of promo CDs that include a handful of tracks from the casts at the time of release:
Hamburg 1996 (3 track promo, assuming audio taken from 1986 cast recording)
Japan (Tokyo) 1996 (3 track promo)
CATS 1998 Elaine Paige (3 track promo; 'Memory' included, and two other non-CATS songs)
Japan (Osaka) 2001 (4 track promo)
Madrid 2003 (1 track 'Memory' promo)
Moscow 2005 (8 track promo?, two versions; both have 4 instrumental tracks)
Dutch Tour 2006 (3 track promo, audio from 2006 cast recording)
German Tent Tour 2011 (3 track promo)
Of everything listed above, the only ones I do not own are the Madrid 2003 'Memory' promo, Prague 2004 cast recording (a very rare CD that was scrapped before moving to production, only test/promo copies exist), and Moscow 2005 (another very rare promo release, only found with the press packages). Who knows if I can ever get my hands on them.
In terms of where to find them, the OLC, OBC, and Vienna 1983 are still being produced today and can be easily found new online, through Amazon or eBay (or better yet, in-person at your local music store!), and so is the Budapest 1984 CD as well (at least from what I can tell, it is always readily available brand new from Hungary). The 1989 and 2019 Japanese cast recordings are also still readily available brand new from Japan through the Shiki webstore. The 2019 movie highlights is also very easy to find, considering it just was released. The Vienna 2021 recording is still available from the label's website (at 45% right now!), but they only ship within Europe.
All the others can be found second-hand to varying degrees of ease online (i.e., eBay). The 1980s cast recordings are not too difficult, with Hamburg being fairly easily found, but as you start moving into lesser known (and shorter running) productions, it becomes more difficult to find them. Some are extremely uncommon, and I purchased the only copy I have even seen go for sale throughout the years, and I am still waiting for the chance to get the few I do not have.
Happy hunting to you, Anon!

Do we know how many (and if so, which) casts Gillian Lynne personally taught outside of the original London and Bway companies?
That is a good question, and something I have paid too little attention to. My GUESS is that she was at all the original / early productions, if only for a day. She would also have trained the associate and / or resident choreographer for the production.
So yes, she would have instructed the original and many later West End and Broadway casts, as seen here with Sarah Brightman:
Then the early productions around the world - I assume both Tokyo, Stockholm, Toronto, Vienna, Hamburg etc. Here she is with Marina Prior (Christine) in Melbourne:
And probably the US sit-down productions and tours. Here with Davis Gaines (Phantom), Lisa Vroman (Christine), Raymond Saar (Raoul) and Hal Prince (director) for the San Francisco production:
I also think she adored Sierra Boggess, cause she was present and working whenever Sierra Boggess was present... For Las Vegas:
...for the RAH celebrations...
...and for Paris...
(Sierra Boggess has also addressed that they had very good chemistry, and that she learned a lot from Gillian Lynne)
But I also know Denny Berry (original swing on Broadway, and later associate choreographer and production dance supervisor) has had a lot of responsibility in keeping Gillian Lynne's original vision alive. She has worked with POTO on four continents according to her own bio, in the US, in Hamburg, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, World Tour, Australia etc. In an interview in 2016 she said that "The detail in choreographer Gillian Lynne’s movement is well-known. And those of us who must pass it on, never, ever forget the beats and the meanings of every count.” Denny Berry was also married to Steve Barton, original Raoul, which makes the link to the original staging extra strong. Here's a photo of her rehearsing the Oberhausen cast, with Elizabeth Welch in the middle (Masquerade):
And one from Hamburg, with Rachel Anne Moore as Elissa / Carlotta (Hannibal):
Another original Corps de Ballet, Patricia Merrin who was in the original West End cast, has also worked as associate choreographer on Phantom and kept an eye on many a production, in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Moscow, the World Tour etc. Here she is in Cape Town, instructing Cat Lane and the Corps de Ballet there:
And for no reason at all, two bonus photos of Gillian Lynne on stage, just because. One is with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Zoë Curlett during the curtain call in West End:
And another with Hugh Panaro on Broadway:

Eddie Redmayne as The Jackal. (© 2023 Carnival Film & Television Limited)
What To Expect From The Day Of The Jackal.
By Olivia Emily, for Country& Town House, October 10th, 2024.
Perhaps Hollywood’s shiniest star of the 2010s – starring in the likes of My Week With Marilyn (2011), Les Misérables (2012), The Theory of Everything (2014) and The Danish Girl (2015) – Eddie Redmayne takes on a role unlike any of his others in The Day of the Jackal: an assassin. Here’s exactly what to expect from Sky’s brand new thriller.
The Day Of The Jackal: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More
In the works since 2022, Sky’s flagship series this autumn is this star-studded series. Written by Ronan Bennett and directed by Brian Kirk, Eddie Redmayne has been attached to the project as an executive producer since the very beginning, with the actor describing the original book as ‘reconceived and contemporised with a new target’ for the series. In March 2023, it was confirmed Redmayne would star in the title role, too.
What Is The Day Of The Jackal About?
The Day of the Jackal is a political thriller centring on a ruthless British assassin and the intelligence officer tasked with capturing him. Sky’s synopsis reads: ‘An unrivalled and highly elusive lone assassin, the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne), makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee. But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer (Lashana Lynch) who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake. The series also stars Úrsula Corberó as Nuria, someone at the heart of The Jackal’s personal life, unaware of who he truly is.’
Where Was It Filmed?
The Day of the Jackal was filmed across Europe in 2023, beginning in Budapest in June, before moving to Vienna in July. As autumn drew in, it was over to Croatia, with filming taking place in Rijeka, Pag, Dubrovnik and the Istrian region.
What Is It Based On?
The Day of the Jackal is based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel of the same name. Critically and commercially acclaimed, Forsyth’s plot whisks us back to 1962 and begins with paramilitary terrorist organisation OAS’s real conspiracy to assassinate Charles de Gaulle, the President of France. In the book, the Jackal is tasked with the job. Forsyth’s novel was an instant bestseller – perhaps because it was published less than a year after the real de Gaulle actually died (of an aneurysm; he wasn’t assassinated). Sky’s series, however, moves the action to contemporary Britain.
If you recognise the plot, that’s because this isn’t the first time The Day of the Jackal has been adapted for the screen: in 1973, Edward Fox portrayed the Jackal in the book’s first film treatment, before Bruce Willis took on the role in the 1997 remake which re-set the action in the US, with the First Lady the assassination target
The Cast
Eddie Redmayne as The Jackal
Lashana Lynch as Bianca
Úrsula Corberó as Nuria
Charles Dance as Timothy Winthorp
Richard Dormer as Norman
Chukwudi Iwuji as Osita Halcrow
Lia Williams as Isabel Kirby

What Is A Jackal?
‘Jackal’ is the assassin’s codename in The Day of the Jackal. So what is a ‘jackal’? In the wild, a jackal is a canine mammal, smaller than a wolf but bigger than a fox. Found in Africa, the Middle East, Southeastern Europe and western and south Asia, jackals are opportunistic omnivores and predators of small to medium sized animals and, like foxes, typically hunt and scavenge at dawn and dusk. In conversation, however, to call someone a jackal is to describe them as cunning, dishonest and treacherous – and someone who performs base deeds for another.
How Many Episodes In The Day Of The Jackal?
The Day of the Jackal is a 10-part series, with each episode running for 60 minutes.
Release Date
Episode 1 of The Day of the Jackal will air on Sky Atlantic on Thursday 7 November 2024, and the following episodes will air weekly on Thursdays. The release schedule is as follows:

4, 6 and 10 for the jellicle ask!!!
Hi hello!!!!!!! Ty for the ask :)))
4. I wish I could just say the entire cast of Thunerspiele because hollllyyyyy shit they’re all SO gorgeous to me. My favorite ever. But I’ve narrowed it down to two, one Tecklenburg and one Thunerspiele
For Thunerspiele, it’s Victoria
Just so unbelievably gorgeous ma’am marry me immediately. Every day I curse and shake my fist at the sky that we don’t have a readily available proshot or bootleg. A disappointment on so many levels.
For Tecklenburg, it’s this unnamed ensemble member that I am completely head over heels for
I would follow her into the underworld. I would do anything for her.
6. I have a couple that I’m a really big fan of, but probably my favorite is Cettie and Pouncival are queer-platonic soulmates. I love them both so, so much. The runner-up was Bombalurina and Mistoffelees, but SPECIFICALLY the 1981 London Bomba and Misto, because I can imagine them making fun of Tugger together in his song. SO fun. Love them.
10. Oooo this is a good one!!! I actually came up with a ‘The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musical’ au at like. 1 am innnnnn Vienna? But I didn’t write any of it down, so I literally have no idea what the hell I was talking about.
ANYhow, I read this one fanfiction on ao3 that was basically an au about Misto being Macavity’s son???? It drove me absolutely fucking insane, (it was the same night as previous tgwdlm shenanigans), and I left a flurry of comments that I have not revisited since bc I do not remember making them. Anyways it was SO fucking cool and if yall want me to find it again and post it, I 100% will, because it’s one of my favorites ever.
Also at the top is @diorlusional’s cats apartment au, (which I SWEAR I’m writing something for. It’s just. Hard. Motivation is hard to come by these days 😔😔😔). Anyhow, this apartment au is everything it’s ever wanted. It’s a collage, it’s an I-spy book, it’s a pintrest board, it’s a community garden, it’s the hundertwasserhaus in Vienna. It’s everything to me forever
#asks!!!!!!!#cats the musical#cats musical#there was just a CRAZY fucking lightening storm#2 for 2 nights in a row baybeee#just realized how often I mention Vienna in this post#in my defense it was prolly my favorite city I visited#which is saying something because Budapest was fucking gorgeous and Munichen was SO much fun#Munichen is also where I got the plush that inspired Bluebelle too :)#carried her in one coat pocket and a wine bottle full of water in another#probably the coolest I’ve ever felt#anyhow TY FOR THE ASK!!!! this was so fun to fill out#I could rant about this show for hours#especially the German productions

@godnattakatta asked for my favorite Victoria actresses in a previous message so here they all are!
Hyla Mayrose Wright (US Tour 6, 2021)
Her Victoria takes and her understanding of her overall are just so intriguing to me, I feel like she understands who Victoria is but also what can be expanded about her, like her saying Victoria has an actual connection to the Jellicle moon itself was everything to me and it still is, because it makes sense; the moon can symbolizes femininity but also (at least in some interpretations) the ebb and flow of time, which relates quite well to Victoria’s arc of coming of age. Focusing on her performance though, I kept finding myself looking for her in the crowd- she has such cute background interactions with the other jellicles that each have their own uniqueness to them, like she thought of how Victoria feels about each and everyone. Granted, the US Tours do seem to have had some direction to further character interactions among the cast but Hyla’s really stuck out to me. I was so focused on her during the ball- which I think is saying a lot since so much happens in the US tour choreography she’s just so fun to watch and can really capture your attention.
Georgina Pazcoguin (2016, Broadway revival)
Her expressions during the white cat solo are everything- and she really evokes the feeling of being captured by these strange feelings she's having and still being intrigued by them as much as she's nervous. She wants to and then does surrender to the feelings, and her heavy breathing by the end of the solo (whether intentional or just because of exhaustion) I think adds a really nice touch. I'm really partial to her expression at the end of the solo and how she interacts with Mistoffelees afterwards. Very good stuff but no surprise since it was directed by Gillian Lynne! Also she's what drew me to Victoria in the first place so I have to include her.
Hanna Kenna Thomas (Various London productions and Vienna revival)
Her Victoria comes off a little more playful and even sassy to me, which is really fun to watch. A notable moment for me is when she's encouraging Jemima to play with Jenny's tail and whenever she interacts with Munk. I also like the subtlety of her acting during the solo, she moves very beautifully and her expressions when lowering into the splits- so good. I also think she has an overall excellent reading on Victoria (though I do disagree with one thing she said) but I do think she's ultimately right that there is an innocence in discovering yourself and your body for the first time and it's beautifully presented in the solo.
Honorable mentions:
Ellis Van Evert (Amsterdam and Original Paris Production)
Ellis really embodies the "Unselfconscious" trait the best for me, like she doesn't even expect the pas de deux to happen because she's so deeply caught with these feelings inside and overall she's just really cute. Particularly during Skimble’s song, she’s very excited about creating the train and being in the front, she starts twirling with the cowcatcher- again super cute. Like on my first watch of cats Paris I was taking physical notes and pausing every other second because I was so into her performance.
Ebony Jayne Kitts (RCCL Cast 12)
Ebony’s performance as Victoria, to me, really showcases the ‘loving life’ aspects of Victoria’s character and just seeing her perform makes me happy, her Victoria is so smiley and cute she’s become a newer favorite of mine. She has this very timid but excited energy during the pas de deux which is very fun to see and her acting flows very well with her movements during the white cat solo. I’ll admit there’s some small bias here because I did see Ebony perform live, it just wasn’t as Victoria but even then her movements were so fluid and gorgeous to watch just like the clips I’ve seen.
I don’t think there are any Victoria performances I dislike- so I like just about any Victoria, as long as the performer gets those key moments down like the white cat solo and Grizabella’s first touch I’m happy.
#victoria the white cat#Victoria posting#reuls rambles#A lot quicker I said…#I can't say I have an objective favorite Vic so I went through the ones whose performances really stuck with me. Of course I'm only basing#On live performances#Since comparing to recorded ones is rigged!

✍️ and 🎯 for the ask game!
✍️ If you had total creative control over a production of Cats, what would you change and why?
There's a bunch of little things, but in regards to big things, from a purely aesthetic POV, I would bring back the original Broadway style structuring of the show (mixed with the Original Vienna production), and how it interconnected with its narrative more - so this includes things like the Alonzo Shadow Dance connecting with the Demeter/Alonzo subplot etc.. I'd bring back their costuming and makeup tradition as well, as that I feel was a good example of how designs can be more "muted" from a colour palette standpoint and quick and easy to do, but not look like muddy water.
Also, I'd bring back all of the cut lyrics and stanzas - honestly make the show longer, I wish for audiences to sit in confusion and fear for as long as I demand they be there - I am a believer that CATS should be palatable as little as possible, and making it unsettling and weird again is a must. That being said, I likely wouldn't bring back G**ltiger in any significant capacity (the artistry of that number is commendable, but it has so many negative connotations associated with it, that I do not believe it should be brought back in any capacity, even if re-written), but do believe that "In Una Tepida Notte" and/or "The Ballad of Billy McCaw" should be reintroduced into the show. While I love giving Gus "The Pekes and the Pollicles", I'd like it if we could reintroduce the operetta within a musical angle.
Blocking Jemima/SIllabub and Victoria together more so that it's more evident that the two of them are mutually working towards the show's concluding revelation would add more narrative cohesion leading to the final sing and touch. While I feel in theory the two roles actually being one was a better idea from a streamline standpoint, I love Jemima/Sillabub too much to do that. So that's the compromise.
Plus another thing, I'd want all the counterparts to be on stage as well with their original designs and redesigns - so Plato and Admetus, Pouncival and Carbucketty, etc., so this would be a more rather than less cast.
Also from a purely "no one cares except for me" standpoint, I want Skimbleshanks to be blocked to hang out with his friends (see: Jenny, Jelly, Asparagus, and even Bustopher if he's kept on stage). Why is he always hanging out by himself - let him sit with his friends!/j
🎯 What's a common headcanon/theory/interpretation that you don't prescribe to?
Answered this one, but another one I don't personally subscribe to is Alonzo being siblings with Victoria and Mr. Mistoffelees (whom I don't think are siblings either).
Nothing particularly personal about it, but I already struggle with keeping B&W Alonzo at the forefront of my mind as is, and this one seems to exist mainly just because they have the same colour palette. So it stands on shaky foundation for me - plus I don't think all the cats need to be blood related to one another. It's nice to explore multiple different community and familial angles from each of the generations.

Hi hello!!!!!
Have you ever seen Cats Tecklenburg? It’s a production of cats entirely circus themed, and it’s on YouTube!!! It’s really fun, and all German casts usually sound really really good, because they use the original Vienna translation, which does the same thing that the Swedish 2016(?) Jesus Christ Superstar tour does, which is changing the lyrics to fit the meter of the language!!!!
It does have growltiger in it, but that fact is, at least for me, canceled out by the fact that this production has my favorite iteration of Billy Mccaw EVER, Jellylorum sounds like an angel, and this growltiger and jelly are actually really sweet to each other, it’s really cute :)))
I’ve watched so many productions of cats that I’ve found a bit of a formula for myself, and what languages the songs sound really good in.
Memory, and Jemima specifically, sound really really good in Spanish, and for Jemima, especially with the final reprise of her motif, ‘Sunlight,’ because the way the syllables fall into place. Either that, or Jemima from the 2004 Madrid production is just LITERALLY an angle.
WAIT SPEAKING OF CIRCUSES, in the 90s to i believe the early 2000s, there was a Circus Tent Tour in Australia that there are NO recordings of, besides a 20 min documentary on YouTube. It upsets me to an unholy degree because according to the documentary, there was TRAPEZE TRICKS!!!!!
Also Victoria looks so gorgeous, her wig has ringlets? Its curly and very beautiful <333
Anyways, for the request bit, maybe Razzle teaching one of the kittens to swim? Maybe Pouncival? I think he’d either be rly rly good or really really bad at it lollll
YOOOO THAT SOUNDS SO COOL!!? I'll definitely have to check it out on YouTube :0 I love learning about all different kinds of productions yippee!!
Also I love the request I'll draw it a bit later bc I just woke up ❤️

I just came across a post where someone asked something about your Cats YouTube video and I immediately went: Oh my god is it... is it... and I looked on YouTube and you are in fact the person who's Cats video essay shows up on my feed about once every three months causing me to get right back down the rabbit hole of that obsession. Which is neat.
Also did you ever get a bootleg of the Vienna revival? Cause seeing that was how I got into Cats and I'd love to be able to watch it.
Unfortunately Vienna is still lost to me. Maybe someone out there's got it, but even then there's a good chance I'd have to do trading for it and my bootleg stock is pretty limited to various productions of Cats, a copy of Six you can find out youtube easily, and the OBC cast of Wicked.
Though if anyone's got Vienna, you know what to do!

I'm so ashamed of myself, a song from Cats came up on shuffle and I played the "guess which Cats album this is before they start singing" game, and there was applause so I knew it was recorded live, and I thought that it was the 2021 Vienna cast but it was actually the 1986 Hamburg cast. :( But at least I didn't think it was the 1987 Amsterdam cast, can you imagine?

there are SO MANY boyos in the original vienna too. look at them in the Pekes lineup, they all dont even fit on the screen (& Misto and Tugger arent even present!)
This production has:
a Carbucketty a Pouncival a Bill Bailey a Tumblebrutus a Plato a Quaxo (not Misto, a white male kitten) and obviously a Misto
This cats has FIFTEEN boys, seventeen if you count Macavity and Bustopher
im watching the vienna 88 boot and MAN is it hard to tell who im looking at
#idk how the hell youre supposed to keep track of them all especially at this quality#tho i do love a large cats cast#i think mexico 2013 has all of those PLUS an admetus on top#plus i think (?) they had a cettie plus an electra which vienna doesnt have#and a sillyboob+ jemima too#they went all the hell out#cats fan on main

Ask game, if you like!!!
🧵✍️🐾📌
🧵 What's your favorite production and why?
I think there are so many productions in the past that would have made them highest on my list if I had been able to see them 😭. I have such a fondness for German Tent Tour (Cats does really well in German Speaking countries!) and so many of the casts for the previous Asia tours. But my heart really lies with Vienna Revival. I as so incredibly, incredibly fortunate to be able to travel to see it. The cast was so close knit and that stage was *tiny*. So all the cats were interacting and improvising constantly. Of course the Ronacher had a true, full orchestra. The quality of lighting and sets were unparalleled. Just an unbeatable production. I'm sad every day that it closed 😭😭
✍️ If you had total creative control over a production of Cats, what would you change and why?
Resurrect Gillian, bring back Karen Dawson, put P&P and Growltiger back in their proper places, and let individual productions have control over their designs and decisions. Find all the cats alums and pick their memories, brains, thoughts, and experiences. Invite them to perform and teach the next generation.
Also everyone would have fluffy tails again. If Munkustrap does have the full Gruber tail, what is even the point??
🐾 How did you 'discover' Cats?
I answered this one in another ask and as soon as I can I'll put the link up here 😄❤️
📌 What was Cats 2019's biggest mistake, in your opinion? (OTHER than 'bad cgi') If you don't think it made any notable mistakes, what's your favorite thing about it?
In my very, very biased opinion the biggest mistake is just that the movie Exists. Having watch the proshoot that is 1998 and having seen the musical on stage several times, I can now honestly say that Cats is a stage spectacle. So much of it relies on theatrical tradition that taking it off the stage just results in nonsense. Adding "realism" to Cats mutes its exuberant spirit.
Thank you SO MUCH for the asks, my dear! ❤️❤️❤️

🧵🎯🌙
🧵 What's your favorite production and why?
This is so hard to answer, truly... I feel like 98 is an easy choice because it was basically the all-star cast of English-speaking Cats at the time, but Moscow, the Vienna revival, and even Tecklenburg have also wormed their way deep into my heart.
🎯 What's a common headcanon/theory/interpretation that you don't prescribe to?
I'm very prickly about Mac being a son of Old Deut/Munk and/or Tugger's brother. Neither Mac nor Munk need a reason to fight each other in the show canon and he and Tugger are barely even onstage concurrently most of the time, so it just feels sorta meaningless to me personally. 🤷♀️
🌙 Do you think Cats has a theme/message? If so, what is it?
I think Cats has a very deep-running theme of generational storytelling, and the upsides (Deme and Bomba warning the younger kittens about Macavity) and downsides (the younger kittens being warned to stay away from Griz for her past wrongdoings) inherent to this. Even less serious stuff -- it's my personal headcanon that Deme and Bomba were taught the Gumbie Cat song by Jelly, and they used to be the mice as kittens.
#thank you for the ask!#ride-a-dromedary#cats the musical#cate talks cats#i could go on with the generational thing for ages and ages but i won't (for now)#it's all part of my grand jellylorum/grizabella epic that will sit in my head for years until i finally find the words to put it down
