She really was an idiot.

She didn't prepare for this, why? She logically had to know he would be there, but she was hoping on some bizarre star that for once he wouldn't show up to Oklahoma during storm season. Maybe just give this one to her after last year, she would give him the next. Split custody. Easy peezy. But, of course, nothing was ever easy with Tyler Owens.

The man was the definition of stubborn, when he wanted to be. When he wanted something. What he still wanted with her she had no idea, she thought she had made things clear the last time they spoke.

"Well? You got an answer St. James?"

Last name? When did he start calling her by her last name again? The fuck?

"Ah, there she is." Tyler's grin turned into a full-blown smile as he all but cooed at her, she didn't have time for this. The clouds still needed some time, Kate wasn't going to have them rolling out right this second but she saw the same stuff Riley did. He wanted her reaction, and he got it in the form of her look of absolute disgust and horrid offense.

"Where ya headed this fine storm day?" Tyler preened under her eye, rocking on his heels and looking like the cat who got the cream.

"Why do you wanna know? Still need me to navigate for ya?" Riley asked, head tilting, eyebrows furrowing overly in concern. Her mouth turned down, but the comic glint in her eye gave her away. Her smile breaking through was the next give away. Tyler scoffing at her.

"No, I don't. I also was able to find another camera man after you left us high and dry." Tyler's real emotions started to glimmer through, and Riley's amusement died. The 25-year-old straightening up and looking down at her feet for a second before she looked back up at Tyler.

"East." She answered his previous question, her voice was small as she looked to the side, back at the clouds. "Has good sheer, instability, and the sky all to herself. No fighting for dinner scraps necessary over there. Same can't be said for the West. They'll choke each other out before anything exciting happens."

"Really, is that so? You wouldn't be lying to me now, would ya?" Tyler leaned down a bit, encroaching on just enough of her space for her to miss the heat of his skin under hers but not close enough for her to actually feel it. "How I look at it, going west double the chances."

"Well please feel free to go wrangle the west then cowboy, take your chances. Whatever will put on a good show for the audience." Riley pushed out, voice taking a harsher edge than she meant but he was so close to her wearing that stupid hat and those stupid boots and smelled exactly the same and it was setting her fight or flight off like a red-hot poker on a nerve ending.

"Are you saying I'm boring?" Tyler's head tilted and his eyes narrowed

"I never said that." Riley shrugged, looking up at him through her lashes and shaking her head. "I mean, you have a journalist from across the pond following you around like a lamb about to be pulled in for slaughter. I'd say that's pretty entertaining."

"You've been checking up on me?" Tyler's lips quirked up in a shit-eating smirk.

"You wish." Riley scoffed.

"And if I did?" He took another step forward into her space, which had Riley take a step back. Swallowing heavily. Tyler chuckled at the ground, "Still skittish I see."

"Shut up."

"How about you make me darlin'." His smirk grew and Riley's face flushed bright red, she could feel the heat of her blood pooling in her cheeks and wanted to die.

"You can cut the act Tyler, the cameras are off, no one here for you to entertain anymore." Riley rolled her eyes and looked to the side.

"I wouldn't say that." He kept his eyes on her, watching her squirm. Tyler raised an eyebrow leaning his head down to try and get on her level. She just clicked her tongue in response, the man breathed out through his nose and shook his head, "So, east then?"

"Yeah."

"Riles!" Sarah sing-songed, walking over and waving a tablet in the air, "I only grabbed Isaac and we still have," Sarah checked the time on the tablet quickly, "2 minutes and 35 seconds to spare. For you, enjoy, now come with me." Sarah held out her hand and with one more short glance to Tyler, Riley grabbed Sarah's hand and walked away. Again. The lump in her throat felt heavy and hot as tears prickled behind her eyes.

She was not going to cry right now. What the hell was wrong with her?

Thankfully the Warlock decided to play nice today and start on the first try. It allowed her to be able to get the jump on the chase. Riley acting like she was going nowhere fast when she felt Kate's eyes on her and then when the other blonde let her guard down just a little, that's when Riley silently motioned for everyone to go. Sarah and her in the Warlock and taking off in under 30 seconds. The monitor van behind them and acting as a shield from Storm Par.

Who was so kindly up their ass.

"So, what was that about?" Sarah finally popped.

"I was wondering when that was coming." Riley sighed, glancing at the stream and then back to Sarah, "Can we not do this right now?"

"Nope has to be now. You'll never talk about it otherwise."

"What? Unless I'm trapped with you for hours on end in a heavily armored vehicle?" Riley coughs out a laugh and sputters out some giggles, "Only you Sarah, only you."

"And that's why you love me!" Sarah chirped and bounced up a little in her seat batting her eyelashes at Riley obnoxiously. Causing the blonde to laugh, while Sarah pushed her chocolate locks behind her shoulder with a flounce.

"Yes. Yes it is." Riley laughed while nodding, smiling easily for once.

"But seriously, what did the cowboy want with you?"

Riley took a breath and once again looked to the stream.

"Forget them, it's just you and I. No names need to be said." Sarah soothes her best friend's obvious anxiety about opening up and being vulnerable like that in front of thousands of viewers at once.

"Uh, okay." She goes to start but a honk get's her attention and the crackling of the radio on the dash getting Sarah to grab it and click down the button.

"We read Wizard. Warlock is reading you, what going on?" Sarah asked.

"It looks like the Tornado wranglers have entered the chat, they just cut off Storm Par, do we want to keep behind us? Or let them pass?" Daniel informed them and Riley almost let herself smile. Having to bite it back with not great success.

"Hold position, no one is taking this one from me." Riley took the radio from Sarah and smirked. Sarah lit up as they both looked like kids in a candy store. "Hold the wheel." Riley was out the double paned windows the next second, her upper half leaning out the side. One arm securing her inside, the other held up with the middle finger raised, it was mainly focused on Storm Par. And judging by how she could see Tyler laugh she figured he knew that.

Why that was important to her she had no comment on. She looked up to the sky and smiled, letting her eyes close and her head to be thrown back. Laughing to herself as she saw the funnel form. Getting back inside, raising the window and getting her harness back on worked out like a well-practiced dance. Riley back and secure in her seat in seconds. Foot on the floor.

"There it is folks, we have funnel formation! Look at that rotation!" She cheered, "It's a great weather day here in Oklahoma! And we are here with yet another top-secret little adventure for you guys. It's still a work in progress and I promise I will tell you all everything very very soon. Just be patient. But for now, let's focus on this twister." She grinned keeping her eyes between the funnel and the road, "and we have Tornado Touchdown!" She called and Sarah whooped, the others screamed over the radio. She just laughed.

She kept her foot on the floor, she knew it was a little rougher than she normally pushed it, but the sooner they got this figured out the sooner this could be over and she could start dispatching smaller teams to start disrupting all the tornadoes. No one would ever get hurt again because of a storm. Or lose a home, a loved one.

"Tornados on the move!" Riley yanks the wheel and turns on the road next to the field that Tyler was currently thundering though like an off roader, his suspension hates him, she just knows it. Storm Par following them, and they make their right turn.

The hail began to worry here, hoping she had enough barrels to kill this thing from the inside.

"Holy shit!" Sarah gasped and Riley whipped her head to look where Sarah was and almost loses control of the warlock when she sees Tyler's truck almost decapitated by a wind turbine propeller.

At least the tornado wasn't strong enough to just tear the thing to pieces, that made her hopeful her experiment would work this time around. And Tyler kept driving so he was fine. But when she looked back she cursed loudly and yanked the wheel to swerve out of the way of all the amateur chasers setting up on the side of the road to watch Tyler and the tornado.

"They're gonna get themselves killed." Riley muttered shaking her head still fighting the warlock and seeing Javi and Kate behind her catching up, their truck now next to Daniel in their tech van. Yanking the radio to her she held down the button. "I don't care what you do, just get them away from you Daniel!"

"But the van-"

"We can get another one! I don't care!" Riley screamed and slammed the radio back down on the dash but it was too late, Daniel couldn't keep them at bay and next thing she knew Kate and her were meeting eyes as the white truck passed the black tank.

Storm Par made a right and so did Riley. Sarah frantically looking and moving her fingers across the tablet in her lap. "Give me a route around them! Now!" Riley barks and Sarah puffed out in frustration.

"I'm trying!"

"Try harder!"

"Here! Turn here!" Sarah pointed to a small road that she would have missed if it hadn't been pointed out. It cut to another diagonal street and Riley could see the intercept.

"Right! Now!"

Riley yanked the wheel and their back tires skid in the mud of the dirt road but didn't get stuck, thank god. "A little more warning next time!"

"I'm going my best here Riles! Left! And just up there, the clearing!" Sarah screamed, her smile growing as they saw it. The field of golden strands of something, Riley honestly couldn't care less. It was there and it was gorgeous.

"Yes! Great job Sarah!"

Riley pushed down on the accelerator. Seeing the Storm par vehicle retreat and drive past her only to park a little farther away.

"No way they're retreating, is something wrong?" Riley saw Javi jump out but not Kate.

"Not our problem right now." Riley pushed it, the Warlock doing it's best to keep traction in the mud. She positioned them right in front of it and slightly to the side, Seeing the updraft they needed. "And launch in 3, 2, 1." Riley hit the switch under her finger meant to blow the seals on the barrels. But it just clicked. Nothing happened. She tried it again.

"Riley..." Sarah trailed off.

"I know. I know." Riley muttered under stress, her teeth tearing holes into her lower lip. Her impatience and frustration won out and she just shook her head. "I'll have to do it manually." She was already out of her harness and hitting the hydraulic latch to open the door. "Stay here! I'll be right back!" Riley yelled over the roar of the tornado. And Sarah just shook her head, undoing her harness and getting out too. Climbing on top of the black barrels and ripping the metal rings off the tops.

"What are you doing! I said to stay-"

"You really don't know me if you think I'm just gonna sit there and watch you possibly die!" Sarah screamed back. The wind was pulling at their clothes harder now, and Riley could feel it getting harder to put her foot down than to lift it up. Her hands shook as her and Sarah worked faster. Once the last one was off, the trailer disconnected, and Dorothy had been activated, Sarah was down holding out a hand for Riley. Who took it and they ran back to the Warlock. Riley pushed Sarah into the vehicle first, her hands searching for purchase on the side of the warlock as she had to use every ounce of her strength to take a single step. An explosion of pain erupted from her right side, the one facing the tornado. Debris getting closer with every second that passes.

She let out a cry and heard Sarah screaming her name. Riley took her hand offered through the vehicle and got herself inside. Doors closing tight.

Riley and Sarah got back in their harnesses as Riley hit the button to drop the trailer and get the hell out of there. Yes, the Warlock could handle intercepts, but she didn't want to play the game of the spikes not working if the rig system wasn't working. Same wires. Just different paths.

When they were back on the road, just out of the path of the tornado, they watched. Shaking, chests heaving, eyes wide to see if it would take it. And when the mass of air took the barrels like taking candy from a baby they both cheered. Grins wide and eyes filled with adrenaline as they both scrambled out of the car. Sarah filming it up close on the tablet. Riley pulling out her phone and snapping some photos.

"Come on. Come on. Slow down. Choke." Riley pleaded, her anxiety sky rocketing as she heard blasting music and started to bite at her bottom lip again. Tasting blood when Tyler drove right into the damn thing. And next thing she knew bright lights were going off inside the storm.

"Fireworks..." Riley muttered, dropping her phone to her side, looking back to Sarah, "Potassium nitrate, oxidizers, we didn't account for those, the chemical reactions that may happen. Sarah...."

"I know." The dark-haired beauty let her shoulders drop. "I'm sorry, Riley."

"Turn off the cameras Sarah." Riley's face dropped into a deadly calm neutral expression. Her eyes terrifyingly blank and Sarah has never done anything faster.

"Fuck!" Riley cursed as she kicked the Warlock, instantly groaning as she grabs her foot. Hopping a step or two before finding her voice, "One word." She doesn't even need to look at Sarah to know the woman is fighting a grin.

"Hey Ty! Look at this! Looks like someone forgot something!" Boone, the self-proclaimed free spirit, pointed off at a trailer still on the ground as they ended their stream. Loaded up with now topless, empty black barrels, and the now empty Dorothy on the very back. Boone didn't notice the way Tyler's face dropped, still too hopped up on adrenaline, "It's pretty nice huh?"

"Yeah. It is." His eyes cut over to the road and his breath caught in his throat, Riley, leaned against the the Warlock, holding her side as her white tank top stained red on the side, her other hand on the roof of the storm chasing vehicle. Her head on Sarah's shoulder, the weight of the slightly taller woman's arm around her shoulder a welcome comfort.

His stomach twisted more and more with each passing second, his feet moved before he could think, and he was running.

Sarah saw him first and frowned heavily at him. She was new, Tyler had never seen her before this chase season and he didn't like how close she was to Riley.

"What happened? Are you okay? You're bleeding!" Tyler, out of breath, stopped a foot away from the two women in front of him. Trying to get even closer but stopping when Riley pulls back and her cheeks are flooded with salt water, eyes streaming the drops like rain. Her slightly damp baby hair clung to her forehead and her nose was bright red.

"Like you care." She spat, "You ruined everything!" She threw an arm at where the tornado once was, "It-it was going to work this time! But then you added in other stuff, and it failed. God you are such an ass! You know that? Just stay away from me Tyler." Riley tries to get back into the Warlock with Sarah's help, but Tyler was in front of them in a second.

"You think I don't care? Are you fucking kidding me Riley?! I see you hurt, of course I'm gonna care!" His words were heated but his eyes shook and he huffed out a breath. "But if you wanna be that way fine. If you wanna act like it was me who walked away fine. I'll play your game, if that's what you really want."

"I want you to leave me alone, Tyler." Riley breathed out, sounding as exhausted as she looked.

"Look, lovebirds, she needs a tetanus shot and stitches so if you'll excuse us I'm not trying to have my best friend bleed out on the side of the road." Sarah's glare was hotter than Riley, the temperature threatening to burn his skin from his bones if he held them up any longer.

He just nodded and left. Shaking his head and working his jaw. Smile forced when he strolled up to the gang. Laughing off their questions about him and Riley. Lilly pushing the farthest.

"I just want to know if she's gonna come back on board. We've been trying to give her space, but we miss her Tyler." Lily's voice lacked any sarcasm or mocking

"She's not Lils. I'm sorry." Tyler breathed and Boone looked between the both of them, twisting comically in the front seat to see both Lilly in the back, Ben next to her. The Brit also looking intrigued about this mystery person they were talking about. Lilly just looked at him like sadly, like she knew something he didn't and it made Tyler shift in his seat.

"Wait, wait, wait... am I hearing this right?" Boone started to grin like a maniac, "Did Riley St. James used to be a tornado wrangler?!"

"She never wanted to wrangle Boone, she wants to kill." Tyler answered without really answering and shut down Ben's questions. Ignoring Lily's look at him in the rearview mirror.

Man apparently I’m allergic to checking my inbox but HEY better late than never my love!

So my process, if you can even call it that, is chaotic as FUCK!!! I stare off into space writing it mentally first, type all my bullshit in my notes app like a heathen, don’t proofread, drop unsolicited personal lore in the notes, all that. Gonna use TWITR as an example again btw

I’ve said it before, but The Webs In The Rafters is based on a WHACK ASS DREAM I HAD. specifically chapter 17 and the climax of the story. Like I was the Kenny character, Sansa the dog was telepathically speaking in my mind, there were piles of cuddling cats everywhere, the sound of helicopter blades and a trail of spiders in the hay. I woke up like bro what the hell this is a story right here and I went from there. And in fleshing out the plot, pinning the story beats, the time I was writing it was PERFECT TIMING. Because I had a six hour drive to make for a friend’s wedding. And what did my insane ass do? I FUCKING RAWDAWGED that drive. No music, no audiobook, just silent highways and plotting TWITR. By the time I got home I had a very clear idea of where I was going with the story that at that point was only a few set up chapters and a title.

Speaking of titles, a lot of the time I have titles before I have plot, which is kinda weird bc I know a lot of people struggle with titles, but that’s one of the first things that comes to me. Especially with my one shots, like my kysterion fic All The Punches That I’ve Thrown. That lyric popped into my head and a fic idea with it. Song lyrics inspire a LOT of ideas for me.

So does art. Like with In The Truly Gruesome, I saw a drawing emilyartstudios did of Stan and Shelley working a booth for Tegrity at a fair and I was like YO WHAT IF I FUCKED THIS UP AND STUCK ZOMBIE ALIENS IN THERE lmfao. And ofc, the OrangeJuiceVerse wouldn’t exist if I hadn’t seen foxydodo’s art of basketball player Kyle and mascot Stan.

While oneshots come together pretty fast for me usually, being written out in my head to be typed out in the course of a day (back in the days of janitor Riley bored as shit at work and having the time and energy for that lol), multichapters are require more thought structurally. So what I like to do with a multichap:

Think of it in three acts. In script writing, there’s something called the “page 12 event”, the event that gets the plot rolling near the beginning of the film. And I like to stick an event like that at the end of chapter 1 of my stuff a lot of the time, like ITTG and uhhhh yeeting Stan into a mineshaft after we find out the boys are being chased by monsters (jesus what is wrong with me). What I’m getting at: I like to know where my beginning middle and end are, how the characters are feeling at each step, how their relationships change, all that. And a lot of the time I think of the end before I do the middle or beginning tbh. Like I said, chaos. I think of a random scenario (as we know usually someone is hurt and getting taken care of bc I’m fucking evil and that’s where my brain goes constantly), hence the WhumpShots.

And I do primarily operate in WhumpShots. I picture a scene with a character getting their injuries tended, sick and dizzy but having a friend or loved one at their side, etc, and BAM that scene becomes a oneshot. Even the REALLY short ones, like the sot bunny I did last summer called So Only Say My Name, was about 700 words and one sequence of events. That kind of to the point structure comes easy to me, which is why I loved doing Style Week so much; new oneshot prompt every day. And while I don’t usually proofread after I finish a work, I edit as I go, sometimes post random lines on here or send a screenshot to the R.A.N.T. homies (I’ve definitely done this more as of late, a habit from when I attempted writing smut for the first time and would send neen a screenshot all “IS THIS CRINGE?!?” lmfao I love the Idea Trampoline tho). And I can’t spell so autocorrect is fr my saving grace unless it betrays me. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 words in 3 separate fics that I need to fix but am simply not going to bc that requires effort and oh fuckin well.

And I say that, but I may be lax about the more fiddly stuff but I care SO much about the big picture. Like “does this convey the feelings I want it to? Is this going to be a bright spot in someone’s day? Is the vibe I want there?” That’s my priority. If I can leave an impact on a reader, entertain them, make them smile, that’s what matters to me.

The background

Reader's 16, Cedric's 17, they're the same year but different houses, and were chosen as the newest perfect of their house

From the original book shown, each houses have 2 perfects, a boy and a girl, and they'll be patrolling together

Here, each house collaborate with each other's perfect, under Professor McGonagall's supervision

Cedric and reader were paired together, they first met each other when Professor McGonagall called both of them in her office, to introduce them to each others

Reader at first questioned why it wouldn't be her housemate just as before the old tradition? While Cedric said nothing as he keeps on smiling but inwardly thinking this is all too troublesome

Cedric's personality is still the same as the book shown, but sometimes, he does not show his true feelings and has a somewhat elusive side, where he finds everyone's expectation on him is too tiring and just wants to give up for once

After Professor McGonagall's explanation and persisting, reader and cedric both went together for dinner

During their time together, they're both silent whole time while cedric tries to find a way to look through reader, but not managed to which makes him frustrated a little

What caught him off is when reader questioned him what he keeps looking at her, and remarked thet he thinks too much and should stop it

Cedric still smiling, and tried to debute it when the lights suddenly all cut off, which makes no way for both of them and cast lumos while light up a few candles too

Cedric remarks how funny the situation while the reader deadpan about it, they both return to silence again before reader apologize for being rude, which cedric smiles as he smirks and teases reader about it, while she does the same to him

They both then began to talk about their schedules, priorities etc... before cedric walk back reader, which she sighs about it and can't help but think cedric's like a puppy that wishing to be adore

They both bid goodbye, before reader grab cedric's hem and say she'll see him around, which he can't help but chuckle out loud when he sees her getting flustered, and pat her head as he let her go

Cedric can't help but keep on thinking as he walls back and muttered out the last prompt when he's back to his own dorm

About the reader, I mentioned that she's a bit like Tori Spring from Heartstopper, but actually she's also a bit like Noah while Cedric's like Yuri from Their Ark, a Korean manga, here's the link: https://vyvymanga.net/manga/their-ark

I recommend reading from chapter 31 to 40, but the entire story is so good that I'd rather you read from chapter 1 first! Reader's a mix of Tori and Noah. And gosh, this is way too long... In the mood for making a hello puppets coraline au.

Me and some of my friends (the culteeman ofc I mean by that, casting @official-crucified-mortimer @sarilolla @yourlocalnicknackkinnie @phantom-of-the-ruckus )

Helped me figure out the cast!

After scout primes parents died (cause sure why not) she needed to move to her mother's sister and stepbrother, aunt Ruckus and uncle nick.

Riley is a overworked neurosurgeon who rarely has any time for scout or her dog rosco, and nick is to focused on his newest art project to pay any mind to them either.

Riley and nick have an actual reason to hate each other in this au, which unfortunately @sarilolla managed to figure it out befORE I EVEN GOT TO MENTION IT. might reveal it when I feel like doing so.

Daisy takes the role of miss Spink. She used to work together with nick in her younger days and found her love of baking when a role required her to bake. She takes care Of Rosco since Riley doenst have that much time left for him.

Mortimer is Mr. Bobinsky . He likes rats and mice.

Another scout puppet (the une with the cute bun hairstyle I forgot if the yhad à name) is wybie. Full name would by wyborne scout Lovat. (scout mocking them for stealing her name will be wonderful to draw ofc)

And the rest of the cast, like the ghost children, friends in the picture etc will be the other scout puppets. (not the cat tho, for the cat I have something else planned)

Seven Days - Modern Tolkien AU

Firefighter Frerin Durin died in a fire set deliberately. But after he helps his brother, Thorin find happiness, Frerin is offered a second chance. He has to prove himself worthy by righting the one major wrong in his life. Otherwise, history will repeat and he will die for good this time. The catch? He has seven days in which to do this and isn’t even certain what his major wrong is.

At least, he doesn’t know for long.

Syd Prescott has known Frerin since high school. She spent one night with him and then he vanished from her life. Now, he claims he wants to make it up to her, to right was he realizes was his major wrong. But can she trust him? And can he prove to her that she can before it’s too late?

A/N - This story is the sequel to Miss Fortune, but is a stand alone story.

December 6th

Monday

Someone pounded on the front door.

Frerin lifted his head to squint at the clock. It was barely noon.

The pounding grew louder and now Riley began barking to add to the cacophony. With a groan, Frerin rolled onto his back and sat up, then moved to the edge of the bed. More pounding. More barking. Wonderful.

He all but threw himself at the front door. “I’m here, I’m here, knock it off already. I only got in at ten this morning.”

“Yeah?” Thorin grinned at him. “What was her name?”

Frerin came fully awake at that and smiled. For Thorin, they’d seen each other only a few days ago, but for Frerin? It was the first time he could hug his brother in over six months. He flipped the lock on the storm door and slapped at the handle to open it. “Hey, come on in. I thought you were in Vermont?”

Thorin clumped into his house. “I was. Lex and I got back last night. So, who is she?”

“Who is who?”

“The woman who kept you out until ten this morning,” Thorin called over his shoulder as he made his way into the kitchen.

“It wasn’t a woman. It was work. We responded to a fire around two this morning and only got it out at dawn. We went for breakfast, got back to the station to clean everything up and I only dragged my sorry ass in at ten.”

“Here.” Thorin pressed the coffee he’d made for himself into his hands. “I just spent the last week on a ski slope. You need this more than I do.”

“Thanks.” Frerin brought the cup to his lips for a long, much-needed swallow. “So, how was it?”

“It was great. I hit twenty years and I’m retiring to Stowe to be a professional ski bum.”

“You think Alex will like that?”

“Yeah. I think she will.” Thorin took his own cup to the table and drew out a chair. He sank into it, then looked up, a frown creasing his forehead. “What’s wrong? You look different.”

“I look different?”

“Yeah. Like you’ve got something weighty on your mind.”

“Yeah, well… it’s been a busy few days for me. Not all of us get to bum around on ski slopes, you know.”

“What’s been going on?”

“T, you wouldn’t believe me if I told you. Let’s just leave it that it’s been busy.”

Thorin just stared at him for a long moment, and Frerin braced himself for a barrage of questions. But those questions never came. Thorin just took a sip of coffee and lowered the cup. “So, the fire? Everyone who went came back okay?”

“Yeah. It was house fire and everyone got out okay. Hopefully the family cat did, too, but like I said, I only got home at ten this morning.” He rubbed his eyes with one hand as he contemplated whether or not to tell Thorin everything that had happened over the last few days. Keeping it to himself was enough to make him wonder if maybe he was crazy—especially with the way Tori kept popping in and out on him.

“Are you sure everything is okay, Frer?”

“Yeah… it’s fine…” He lowered his hand. “I’ve—uh—I’ve been seeing someone and it’s just… the beginning of a relationship, you know…”

“So you and Lisa are done for good?”

“Yeah. She found another dick she preferred to mine.”

“I did not need to know that.”

Frerin shrugged, draining his cup. “Yeah, well, it’s the truth. And to be honest, I’m really better off.”

“Well, tell me about the new girl, then?”

Frerin couldn’t help but smile as he got up to fix a fresh cup. “It’s Syd Prescott.”

“What?”

“Yeah. Believe it or not.”

“I believe it.” Thorin grinned. “The Prescott women are pretty tough to resist.”

“T, I’ve already been with her.” He tucked a medium roast pod into the holder and closed it, then pressed the button before adding, “And I fucked it up with her.”

“What did you do?”

“I never called her the next day.” He nodded as Thorin winced. “Yeah. But, she’s giving me another chance. So, keep your fingers crossed.”

“Damn, you sound serious, Frer. What’s going on?”

“Nothing. I just… I needed a change, you know? And I’ve had a thing for Syd since freshman year. And now? Now I have the chance to fix what I screwed up and I’m going to do it.”

“Is that it?”

“What do you mean?” Frerin returned to his chair to sink into it.

“Is that all that’s going on?”

“Yeah, why?”

“I don’t know.” Thorin shook his head, rubbing his bearded chin with one hand. “It’s just… you seem different.”

Frerin’s gut twisted. “Different how?”

“Again, I don’t know. I just—you just seem different, is all.”

“I’m tired of living the way I’ve been living, man. I had the chance to see if there was something there with Syd and I fucked it up. She’s giving me another chance and I don’t want to blow this one, T. I can’t blow it. If I do, then that’s it. No more chances.”

“So don’t blow it with her.”

“Easier said than done. I’m really good at screwing things up with her. And I don’t have a lot of time to fix them.”

He realized his mistake the moment the words left his mouth and Thorin’s brows lowered as he frowned. “What does that mean?”

“It means just that and don’t ask me to elaborate because I’m not so sure I can.”

“Frerin.” Thorin’s voice took on that protective, big brother note Frerin had heard from the time they were kids. Five years separated them and Thorin had looked out for him for as long as he could remember. “What’s going on? And don’t tell me nothing. I know you and I know when you’re trying to hide something and I know you’re doing just that. So give over and spill.”

Frerin sighed softly, tracing a small circle along the table top and when he finally looked up, it was to see Thorin staring him down with the same no nonsense expression he’d seen on their father’s face a thousand times growing up. Shaking his head, he said, “You won’t believe me if I tell you, man.”

“Try me.”

“Okay. You want to know? Here it is. If I don’t convince Syd Prescott I’m in love with her and she can trust me and love me back sometime between now and Friday night, I’m going to die. And I don’t mean metaphorically speaking, I mean, I will actually, literally die. In a fire. Right here. And the next time you see me—and you will see me, T, because I’m going to convince you to get Alex, who you will not be in a relationship with at that point, to help you solve who kills me. I’ll bring you two together next summer, but I’ll be fucking dead. A ghost, man. Mist and magic and not much else.”

Thorin just stared at him for a long, uncomfortable moment, then said, “What?”

“You heard me. This all gets undone come Friday. I’ll bring you and Alex together next summer, but I’ll be gone and I won’t get another chance, T. I have to right this. I have to fix it and win Syd or that’s it. Game over.”

“How tired are you? Because this sounds like the ramblings of a delusional whack job.”

“Yeah. I know. It’s insane and I know I sound fucking nuts. But, this is what’ll happen, okay? Sometime Friday night, someone will set this place on fire, with me in. You and Lisa will hook up for one night and I’ll keep you from drinking yourself into an early grave by forcing you and Al together.”

“Al?”

“Yeah. I call her Al.”

“No one calls her al.”

Frerin bit back an impatient sigh. “I do when I finally convince her she can see and hear me. Look, T, I know how loony this sounds, but I promise you, it will all happen. I’ll die. You’ll fuck Lisa. You’ll finally hook up with Alex and the two of you will be very happy. But I’ll be very unhappy because I’ll be very dead. But, the Big Guy is giving me this one shot to right my biggest wrong and it’s Syd. I know it is. I feel it. And I’m so close to convincing her, but I’ve only got a few days left and I won’t get this chance again.”

“Frer, are you serious? Because this is insane.”

“I know. I know it is, and I swear to you, I’m dead fucking serious. When I was given this chance, I didn't want to see you alone, so I asked the Big Guy to play a little with the timeline of your relationship with Al. I knew you wanted to ask her out last October, so I asked Him to make it so you did. And a few other things have changed. I know Lisa was cheating on me. She and I broke up and I took Syd out the other night and… we’re going out again tonight and I’m trying real hard not to freak out about how quickly Friday is coming up. But it’s coming up fast.”

“And if Syd doesn’t what… love you? Trust you? What happens?”

“I don’t know what she has to do, T. I only know what I have to do. And if it goes right, I’m here. I stay here and with her and everything is wonderful.”

“And if you don’t?”

Frerin’s gut kinked sharply and a sour taste flooded his mouth. “I die sometime Friday night. For good this time. I won’t get another chance to do this.”

He waited for Thorin to burst out laughing, to tell him how completely fucking crazy he thought Frerin was, and how he couldn't believe he expected him to believe such utter bullshit.

But to his surprise, Thorin just stared at him for a long moment. “When did you get sent back, for lack of a better word?”

“Friday. A week before.”

Thorin nodded. “Around eight, eight-thirty?”

“Yeah, I woke up like it was any other day. Why?”

“It makes sense. I had the worst nightmare about you, Frer. I dreamed you’d gone on a call and the building collapsed on you. I woke up in a cold sweat around eight o’clock and Alex thought I was having a heart attack, I was so damn sweaty and out of breath.”

“That nightmare becomes reality if I can’t convince Syd she can trust me, T. And I honestly don’t know how to convince her she can.”

“You said she’s going out with you again, right?”

“Yeah. We went and shot pool night before last and I got her to agree to come home with me and then I had an attack of conscience about rushing her into sleeping together again. I took her home and we fooled around a little, nearly got caught by her grandmother, and now here we are.”

“Ah, caught by Grandmama Prescott would not be wise.”

“You’re telling me. But damn, T, if Grandmama Prescott hadn’t been there? I’d have been begging her to have sex with me. Do you have any idea how hot she really is?”

“No. I find quiet little brunettes are more my type. I leave the redheads to you.”

Frerin smiled. “I’m in love with her, T, and I have been forever. I mean, like I want to marry her and make babies with her kind of in love with her. I’ll throw my little black book down the disposal if she’ll just… I don’t know… be mine… that sounds so stupid and so fucking corny, but I want her. And not just for sex. And I can’t even tell her that. Not yet, because she’ll think I’m fucking crazy.”

“Does she know time has been manipulated?”

“Could you just imagine her reaction if I told her that?”

“Frer, I think you need to tell her.”

“You’re insane. She’ll run like hell because she’ll think I’m batshit crazy.”

“Do you trust her?”

“What?”

“Do you trust her?”

Frerin sighed softly. “I know where you’re going, T, and this has nothing to do with trusting her. She’ll think I’m literally crazy.”

“Then I think you both need to learn to trust each other.”

“Tell me the truth, T, do you believe me?”

He waited as Thorin just stared for a long moment, and relief surged through him when Thorin nodded. “Yeah, actually. I do. And maybe that means we’re both crazy, but I can’t imagine why you’d make this up and it’s not really much in the way of a pickup line, so…”

Frerin sat back, rubbing his face with both hands before raking them through his hair. “Thank Christ for small favors.”

“But you should still tell her. Trust me, honesty is the way to go.”

“Yeah, and she thinks I’m full of shit because I’m trying to get her in bed. I can’t win with this, T, and the stakes are too high to even consider it. I tell her before she sleeps with me, and I’m a jerk because I’m trying to get her to have sex. I tell her after, and I’m an asshole for getting her in bed first.”

“And let me guess, you’re not getting any help anywhere.”

“Not a bit. I’m supposed to figure this all out on my own, but if I make a mistake… I don’t even want to think about it.”

“Trust your gut. And just be honest.” Thorin hesitated and Frerin knew what was coming next “What’s it like?”

“Being dead?”

Thorin winced even as he nodded and said, “Yeah.”

“It’s…” It was his turn to hesitate now because he wasn't entirely sure how to phrase it, mostly because he’d never thought he’d ever have to explain it. Being given this chance came as the biggest surprise ever. “It’s peaceful, T. I don’t remember crossing over, as Ma would put it, but it was like I was in a dark room, and then, I wasn’t. I was able to meet some interesting people on that side, though. And then there’s Tori.”

“Tori?”

“Get that look out of your eye. I’m not sleeping with her—if sex is a thing on that side, I haven’t figured it out yet. She’s more like… not really a mentor but a guide, I guess. She checks in on me, both here and there. She’s a nice kid. Killed in a school shooting a few years ago.”

“Jesus, Frer…”

“I know. Hey, I’ve hung out with Glenn Frey and Bowie, so it’s not all terrible. And I was able to come back and see you and Ma. Pop wasn’t too big on believing her when she’d tell him she thought I was there. And Dís just refused to acknowledge me.” He grinned at his older brother. “You didn’t, either, you big jerk. At least not at first.”

His grin faded. “You were on the verge of becoming an alcoholic as well. That’s why you slept with Lisa.”

Thorin winced. “I would never do that, Frer.”

“Yeah, you would. You did. She came over to your place with some of my stuff, you were half in the bag, next thing you knew, you were in bed with her. You came clean to me, which I appreciated—I think—and you were honest with Al, which is why I forgave you. But, you touch Syd and—”

“You’ve got nothing to worry about,” Thorin chuckled. “She’s not my type. I’ll leave her entirely for you.” He glanced down at his watch. “I’ve got to get to the station. I’m on at two. When are you seeing Syd again?”

“Tonight. So do not come knocking on my door any time tomorrow, got it?”

“You’re optimistic. Or horny.”

“I’m both, man. She got off but I got shut down.” At Thorin’s wince, Frerin nodded. “Yeah. But it’s okay. I really didn't mind it all that much, once the discomfort went away.”

“That’s the worst, man.”

“Tell me about it.”

As payment for helping me move my stuff into the new apartment, I’m hosting a football night, something I haven't done since before I started living with Lisa. Somehow, I never realized all the little things I gave up for her. I love having the guys over. Luke is very much a slob when he lives alone and Jared doesn’t like making a mess that his wife will feel compelled to clean up despite his insistence that she let him do it. That woman is a Saint and always has been.

"So how has it been living with a girl as a roommate?” Luke asks. “Is it as painful as living with your ex?"

No, it isn’t painful at all except for the damn partial I seem to sport every time I catch a glimpse of her in those booty shorts she prances around in when she doesn’t realize I’m home. Okay, prancing is an exaggeration but it doesn’t make it any less distracting.

When I came in to meet Riley, I expected to find a selfish, self-absorbed princess that I would have to pretend to get along with out of desperation to finally have a place of my own again but instead I found a shy, reserved young girl who had to invite a stranger into her life just to make ends meet.

"Honestly at this point I don't know if I have a roommate or if I own a cat," I say around a mouthful of pizza.

"The fuck is that supposed to mean?" Jared laughs, passing me a fresh bottle of beer before twisting the cap off his own and throwing it into the bin across the room.

I raise my hand counting off the reasons on my fingers as I speak. "I never see her ‘cause if she’s home she's hiding out in her room. The only evidence that she is even around is the fact that she leaves food out for me from time to time and that I find her hair fucking everywhere. Then there’s the fact that she spends more time up at night than she does during the day."

I sound harsh but the truth is that I find all of those little things rather endearing.

"Sounds like a fucking dream to me,” Sam says. “You get all the perks of living alone with half the price."

"Nah,” Luke counters, shaking his head, “sounds to me like your apartment is haunted and you're actually living with a ghost. Do you even know what she looks like?"

Yes, I do. In fact, I can’t get her face out of my fucking horny head.

"Yeah, I met her before I moved in and I've seen her cookin’ breakfast a few times on my way out to work but that's ‘bout it."

"Don't ya leave for work at like 5:30 AM?” Jared asks, pausing with his beer half raised to his lips. “Shit,” he shakes his head in disbelief, “you two really are perfect for each other. Who the hell cooks that early?"

"Is she hot?"

Before I even have time to think about it, the pizza crust in my hand is flying across the room and hitting Luke on the side of the head.

"It don't fuckin’ matter if she's hot I'm not shittin' where I eat." Yes, Riley is most definitely hot — fucking gorgeous even — but I’m not about to admit that out loud.

"I wasn't asking for you, I was asking for me." The man wiggles his eyebrows at me and I hesitate to throw another piece of food at Luke but all that’s left on my plate is a chicken wing and I have no interest in cleaning barbecue sauce off the couch.

"What's her name again?" Jared asks, pulling his phone from his back pocket.

I really don’t want them looking her up online but if I give in, there is a chance this conversation will move on to a safer topic.

"Riley McKenzie."

He types Riley’s name into his phone and there’s a moment of awkward silence as he scrolls through the results.

"What kind of modern woman doesn't have a Facebook profile? Does she use a nickname or something?"

I don’t let them see how relieved I am that he hasn’t found her and keep my attention on the game.

"I have no idea, you know I'm not into that shiet."

Sam’s phone dings and it seems to be the end of the whole roommate conversation. The sports announcer on the TV starts talking more excitedly, pulling the guys' attention back to the big screen. Jared stands, yelling as if the players on the field will hear him through the TV. When our team manages to score a touchdown, Luke and I join in the cheering and the two of them high-five each other. Meanwhile, Sam still has his ass in his seat, staring at his phone and Jared punches him on the shoulder.

"Bro, what the fuck, you just missed a fucking beautiful play!"

"I'll catch it on the highlights later, right now I'm watching a stripper give another stripper a lap dance while drinking a shot from between her tits."

"Woah, I wanna get in on that." Luke extends his arm, beckoning Sam closer.

"Can't ya watch that later?” Jared complains, reluctantly moving from the middle spot and letting Sam slide over.

“I've had enough of hearing other guys jack off next to me to last a lifetime, don’t do it on my fucking couch,” I plead with them.

"This is live and it's probably gonna get shut do—" Both guys groan, their heads falling in disappointment.

"You were sayin'?" I ask with a smirk.

"TikTok doesn't normally let Razzy go live for all that long before she gets shut down. She mostly uses it as a way to boost the interest for her OnlyFans account. You gotta pay to see the real good stuff."

There are so many things about that sentence that I don’t understand but I don’t care enough to ask him to explain.

"Ya know, I'm pretty sure checking out strippers on the internet while in a relationship is just as bad as going to a club every Friday night." I lean back in my chair crossing my ankle over my other knee.

"Come on Sy, you know I don't keep secrets from my girl. We watch the videos together, it gets her off." Sam winks, sporting a proud grin like he thinks every man would be envious of him.

I look back at the television screen, seeing the timer in the corner tick down to zero, announcing the start of halftime. I pick up the remote, pressing the mute button before the annoyingly loud commercials start.

"Since you're paying for her account anyway, why don't you show us the videos that seem to be better than you at satisfying your girl." Luke sounds a little too desperate for a guy who’s most likely had four different women in his bed this month alone.

"Fuck you, I'm plenty capable of getting her off on my own but since you asked so nicely," he types something into his phone before turning the screen towards his right so Luke can see the video, "this is what I get to watch while my girl chokes on my cock."

I nearly spit out my beer, forcing myself to swallow before a coughing fit takes over. The three men on the couch look my way, wearing equal expressions of concern.

"You good man?"

I nod my head furiously, holding my hand up for Jer to give me a second. They keep their eyes on me and I know there is no way that I can brush this off. When my breathing steadies out, I tip my head to the phone which now lays forgotten on Sam's lap.

"That's her,” I blurt out without thinking and immediately regretting my words.

There’s a moment of confusion while Sam looks down at the girl on his screen. The focus of the camera is on her body as she dances on the pole in nothing but a red lace bodysuit but her profile is still fully visible.

I swallow the lump in my throat clarifying my statement. "That's Riley."

All three men are stunned silent for a second but of course, Luke has an unhelpful comment to break the tension.

"Oh shit! Sy's living with a porn star!"

"Stripper," I grumble, palming the back of my neck.

"Oh no, trust me, that video was tame. Her racy solo clips definitely count as porn and last month she was in Vegas trying out some new girl on girl shit too."

"Fuck, stop! I don't wanna know.” I throw my hands up, rising from my seat in a desperate attempt to escape the current conversation.

"Why not!” Luke calls after me. “This is epic you could fuck a porn star — that's the dream!"

I close my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose. "Luke, no offence but if your biggest dream in life is to fuck a porn star, ya need to rethink your priorities."

"Be honest, when's the last time you got laid?"

I’m not particularly inclined to answer that question but I know my friend well enough to be sure he’s nowhere close to dropping the subject. Luke is like a shark and women are his blood. Not the best metaphor in the world but it’s pretty accurate. If he gets a hint of interest, he won’t let go and I’d rather he not make it his life’s mission to fuck Riley for the sake of being the first to do so. She deserves better — not that I think I’m a better choice, I just mean he’d take my attraction as competition. I lean back against the kitchen counter, grasping it with both hands until the edge is uncomfortably digging into my palms.

"Not since before I shipped off for the last time."

"Woah, really?" Jared exclaims, turning to face me with one arm over the back of the couch. He’s been my best friend since we were 14 years old when Jared transferred to my school. One of the things I like about him is the fact that he’s completely smitten with his wife and understands my desire to settle down one day rather than chase women like our other friends. He’s genuinely surprised by my answer but his tone isn't the least bit mocking.

"Lisa didn't exactly welcome me back with open arms,” I admit with a sigh. “Maybe I should have just cheated on her, at least then her anger towards me woulda been warranted."

He gets up from the couch, stacking all the dirty plates by the sink.

"We both know you would never do that. Just like we both know ya aren’t gonna make a move on Riley, are ya?"

At least Jared has my back.

“No, I’m not,” I say honestly. “She’s been cagey about her job since I moved in, I doubt she ever wanted me to even know ‘bout any of this. I’m not gonna bring it up and I still maintain that hookin’ up with her while we live together would be a bad idea no matter what the circumstances may be.”

I just have to pray I never see another one of those videos because I can barely keep my dick in check as it is. When she’s not wearing those damn shorts it’s tight fitting yoga pants that show off her curves in all the right ways and it’s fucking excruciating. So far, it’s taken every ounce of my focus to keep images of her from slipping into my mind when I take care of myself in the mornings.

A stripper. Shy, quiet, can’t even look at me when I’m shirtless, Riley, is a stripper. And a porn star, Luke's voice adds in my head. Fuck. I don’t know what to do with this information but all the little things I know about her seem to fall into place. How long did she expect this secret would stay hidden? More importantly, why am I hurt that she didn’t trust me enough to just tell me?

Who/what is your biggest inspo for poetry or art?

aagh i dont think i'll ever have one biggest inspo for poetry n art i just have a lot of lads which i like specific things about + those likes are still always ongoing and changing lol (which btw ty for askin bout poetry cause i LOVE it n i never get asked abt poetry hehe)

I have a big ol google doc where i have lines of fav poetry i write down when i come across them (usually when im just scrollin the internets) and atm I've been noticing that a lot of lines i keep enjoying are all by Mary Oliver even tho i've yet to read her collection of poetry!!! so that's on my to-do list C: other poets who's names keep poppin up in that google doc are ocean vuong, richard siken, chen chen and uhh flatsound? they do more music but they've done some spoken word stuff and their songs just feel close enough to the realm of poetry to me u know

Art stuff... lol which medium?? /lh I really like thomas jordan's photography (the COLOURS my DUDE) mmm shelia berger's kinetic sculptures and KICKASS "Bird Show" encaustic paintings (i watched the rlly short like 5 min documentary on her and i was enraptured) Spencer finch has got a lot of cool conceptual art stuff like i think CIE 529 418 (CANDLELIGHT) is rlly cool!! Holly warb and @/vchienart both got some lovely lovely illustrations/paintings with soft beautiful colours... @/emilienunez has some really pretty and elegant yet v cute ceramics!! and @/soonthemoon some really like cute warm n cozy ones... Oof there's so many digital artists i love ;-; and i keep finding new cool lads aghh @catnippackets has such a good grasp on like form n shape if that makes sense?? like drawin people in these rlly fluid poses in like silky lineart aaa i found @milkdudz 's art recently and i LOVE their art style and their cats are just. perfect balance of spiky and soft n very very Cat which is so good @everydaylouie u gotta know louie right ?? how can someone make such lovely 2d and 3d art and music and also know how to code n make lil games. that is too much power for one soul to possess nifty-senpai's art n animations and designs ofc!! are incredible!! and i REALLY love their concepts for what the wc clan territories look like (this moonpool are you kidding me???? gorgeous) @thunderc1an's lineless art style my beloved...... yall clammorin about my lineless art style u GOTTA check out theirs so good (also the everchanging never the same designs for wc characters is so good so freeing so interesting to look at!!) Protection - Chapter 1

Summary: Mia Makaruku meets her new neighbor, but he isn’t at all what she expected him to be.

My muscles scream bloody murder, as I trudge through the hallways. Did coach Riley have to be so gruesome today? Goodness me, I don’t even know if I’m gonna make it back to my car. However, when I see the coach standing further down the hall, I quickly straighten my back and ignore the slight dulling pain I feel in my ankle and the rest of my leg muscles. ‘Mia,’ coach Riley says in a stern tone as I come closer to her.

Oh no, I think to myself. I did something terribly wrong. If she uses that tone after the first training of the week, it can only mean I’m in severe trouble. ‘Yes coach?’ I hesitantly ask.

Coach Riley’s looks indicate she is strict. Her blonde hairs are pulled back in a tight knot, a pair of glasses with a thick black frame rests on her nose and the eyeliner that hardens her eyes. While the indication is absolutely one hundred percent correct, you eventually find out she is a sweetheart deep underneath that hard exterior.

When I first arrived in Chicago five years ago, I had no idea what Thanksgiving entailed and I was ready to spend it alone in my apartment. She invited—correction: forced—me to spend time with her family, because she did not want me to sit alone in my apartment on Thanksgiving.

With my last foster family being everything but a great success, it felt good to be welcomed with open arms into a family. I’ve had my fair share of families and while they were all sweet, the last one was a total nightmare. Being slightly traumatized by the experience, it was good to be hugged by a grandma I had never seen before.

Hugs from grandma’s do wonders.

‘You did good today,’ coach says.

Great, now I know for sure I have severely fucked up. If coach Riley starts with a compliment, she is going to break some pretty bad news within a few seconds. I have trained with her for a little over five years. I know her and her odd and slightly crude way of communicating.

‘Okay?’ I say, waiting for the bomb to drop.

‘However, I want you to take it easy, so next training you’re going to train with Tristan on the side of the field.’

‘Come on, coach,’ I whine. ‘Why?’

‘Upcoming Saturday it’s the second to last game of the year. I need you top fit then.’

‘But I am top fit. Honestly!’

Coach Riley isn’t impressed, but to be honest: when is she ever? If this woman has made a decision, she’ll simply power through, no discussion possible. ‘You take it easy during tomorrows training and you listen carefully to Tristan. I noticed a limp on the field just now.’

‘There wasn’t a limp,’ I say. ‘I swear, it’s nothing to worry ab— Okay, I’ll take it easy tomorrow,’ I quickly say when I see her cocked eyebrow that does not bode well.

She finally smiles. ‘Good. Now scocch, I don’t want to look at your face any longer.’

Just when you think she is finally a little bit approachable and kind, she thankfully does this, because her smile was nearly creeping me out. I can’t stop my chuckle. ‘See you tomorrow, coach,’ I say, holding up my hand as I continue to walk through the hallways.

The closer I get to the exit, the colder it becomes. When I’m training, I somehow forget about the ice cold temperatures. However, when I’m not training, which is the majority of the day, I remember we are nearing the winterbreak and that handling these types of temperatures, is not one of my strengths.

I tense up when I step outside and if my ankle wasn’t slightly bothering me, I’d run to my car. When I reached the vehicle, I quickly step in and start to heat it up. My car, unfortunately, isn’t the most advanced and it takes quite some time before it’s even remotely warm. I shiver in the drivers seat. My phone peeps in my pocket and I pull it out, to check the notification that popped up on my screen.

Reminder to yourself: YOU NEED TO DO SOME GROCERIES. GET YOUR FAT ASS CAT SOMETHING TO EAT.

No, no, no, I forgot. I totally forgot. I curse morning-me for sleeping in today. If I had just done groceries this morning before practice, I could’ve go home now. Why was I lazy and chose an extra hour of sleep over doing something actually productive?

I drive off the parking lot, wave to some of my teammates and go to the nearest grocery store. If I have a clear idea of what I want before I go into the store, I can actually manage to do this pretty swiftly and then go home, so I can curl up on the couch to watch yet another cheesy Christmas movie. I desperately need to buy some food for my cat, some eggs and chocolate and… Do I need more?

This is why one makes shopping lists.

‘You idiot,’ I mumble to myself, as I park the car in front of the store. I get out and walk to the entrance. While I’m strolling through the aisles, to at least get the eggs, cat food and chocolate I do know I need, I hear some girls giggling behind me.

I look over my shoulder to my right and see two young girls standing at the produce section. When they look away, I see a glimpse of their red cheeks and notice they are both wearing Chicago Red Star jerseys. I can’t—and won’t—stop my smile. ‘Hi,’ I say to them, causing them to carefully wave at me.

They shyly wave back. ‘Are you Mia Makaruku?’ one girl asks when she finally found the courage to do so.

I nod. ‘The one and only.’

They look at each other and exchange some excited looks. ‘Can we get a picture?’

This has been my favorite part of the job so far. I mean, sure, I love soccer with all my life, however seeing girls this age cheering me on during the competitions and hearing about how they watch clips of me, so they can learn from my techniques, makes me realize I love that even more. They call me their role model and with the status I have, I can actually be one for them. It’s a job I should take seriously and I do.

When kids tell me they are going to try and watch the European Championship for Women’s Soccer, because I am on the Dutch National Team, I try even harder to be the best player of the competition and be a model for them to look up to. Be someone for them I wished I had when I was younger.

I nod again at the girls. ‘Of course. I love your shirts. Tell me: whose name do you have on the back?’

They start to laugh and turn around, showing the backs of their shirts. ‘Yours of course!’

Life hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows for me. I just barely think about it nowadays, since it only leaves me with more questions than answers and I’d rather not wander in the dark like that. It’s weird to think about the things I do remember and don’t.

I do remember the second we skidded off the road. I don’t remember I had a mother or father or three brothers with me in the car. I do remember eventually taking the officer’s hand and despite repeating my name like mantra, kept asking him if he had heard my name correctly. I don’t remember any bodies on the scene, because there weren’t any and I also don’t know how their bodies disappeared.

It’s hard sometimes, knowing there is a memory inside my head that I simply can’t reach, but also not knowing what I’m missing in life. Did my parents love me? Did I have a good bond with my brothers? Was there a specific reason I wasn’t in the system? Why weren’t there other people with the same last name in the Netherlands who recognized me?

I moved from foster family to foster family, while trying to regain my memories by visiting multiple specialists. I went to a lot of places. To England, Ireland, France and Luxembourg, but no one could help me out. At the age of twelve, they simply stopped trying, because it was no use anyways and there was one family back in the Netherlands who insisted on me staying in one place for a change.

Thankfully they did, however I only stayed with them for four years, before I moved to my final family, that was a hell to put it mildly.

Finally, for the first time in yearsI wasn’t going from one specialist to another and there was one place where I was always—despite the family—welcome: my soccer team. In all those years of me visiting specialists, there was always one thing I looked for: a ball to kick around. Soccer was my love, my passion and the only thing I started to care about.

And now I have managed to not only make a name for myself in the USA, but also worldwide. When I was nineteen, I debuted in the Dutch National Team during the European Championship and my performance there was what caught the attention of the Chicago Red Stars. I could leave the small SC Heerenveen in the Netherlands behind and go to the USA. I had seen the American National Team. They were exceptionally good and now I got to play alongside some of them.

My first World Championship was when I was twenty one and the Dutch team was in the finals against the USA. Despite my two goals, the USA was too good and beat us with 4-2. Sure, I was disappointed, but still I was very pleased with the fact that the Netherlands became second and it was such a highlight in my seemingly short professional soccer career thus far.

I managed to overcome all these things and still be the person I am today. Since I can’t remember my past, I made it my mission in life to make the most of my future.

Don’t ask me how, but I managed to come back from the store with three full bags. Apparently, if you wander through the aisles long enough, you’ll find tons of excuses to buy crap you didn’t even need in the first place.

I’m finally back at my apartment building and the automatic doors slide open as I reach them. I walk towards the reception and I say with a smile: ‘Hello Harold, how are you today?'

Harold, the clerk behind the reception who is nearing his pension, greets me with his signature smile and I see the two familiar dimples form in his cheeks. ‘Hello, miss Mia, I’m doing splendid this Monday. How was your training today?’

I simply shrug. ‘It was okay, but I have to take it easy now.’ I can’t help but to roll my eyes. ‘According to my coach, I was “slightly limping” and she needs me top fit this Saturday.’

He scrunches up his nose. ‘But my dear, I think you are incapable of taking things easy. Isn’t your coach aware of that?’

I can’t help but laugh. I always like to talk to Harold, it’s so easy to strike up a conversation with him. ‘I think she just wants to bully me. Is there by the way any mail for me?’

‘There certainly is. Three envelopes for you. Almost makes you seem like a very important lady.’ He sends me a playful wink. ‘Oh, before I forget: I told you about the apartment next to you being sold, right?’

I nod. ‘Does this mean Mystery Person is finally moving in?’ I ask.

Harold nods. ‘He moved in today.’

‘Ah, it’s a man. Is he hot?’

He shrugs. ‘He is pretty stuffy and a bit authoritarian looking. I was hoping for someone as radiant as you. I think we need more people like you around here, not a copy of miss Thornhill.’

I throw my long brown hair over my shoulder. ‘Well, what can I say?’ I chuckle. ‘Not everyone is a ray of sunshine like yours truly. Is there mail for him as well? I can bring it to him.’

‘An envelope did arrive, indeed. I don’t think he will go down here to pick it up. We barely made eye contact today. I hardly even know if he is aware there is a reception, let alone that I’m the clerk.’ He hands me the other yellow envelope and says: ‘Are you sure you want to do this, miss?’

‘Absolutely positive. It might be nice to get to know my next door neighbor. Let’s hope he is not a gigolo. I really can’t use sleepless nights anymore. I have two important games coming up, I need my rest.’

‘Mister Toriello was quite the man,’ Harold laughs. ‘Thank you, my dear, for doing this.’

‘No problem, Harold. See you later!’ I walk to the elevator and hold my card in front of the scanner. The doors slide open and when I get in, I press button number nine. I look at the name on the envelope. It’s actually addressed with a sticker, no handwriting, which I find so impersonal.

A. Walker

A. Walker is probably the most generic name I’ve ever heard. This man could be anybody. Would he be bald, have a beer belly and burps all the time or would he be young, attractive and actually a chance for me to leave my forever alone status behind?

While that would be nice, Harold did say that the man was quite stuffy and authoritarian looking.

As someone with barely any date experience (none at all, actually), I’d say stuffy and authoritarian looking isn’t really my type, but never say never right?

The doors open and I step out on my own floor. I walk through the broad hallways and stop in front of apartment number 943. From behind the door, I can hear someone dragging furniture around the apartment and an occasional male grunt. I knock on the door and just hope that he can hear me. I don’t want to start banging on the door like an idiot.

Thankfully, he did hear me, because footsteps approach the door and when it swings open, my eyes widen.

The man standing in the doorway, does not match the generic sounding A. Walker name at all. He is tall, with broad shoulders and the shortsleeved shirt he is wearing, totally accentuates his muscled biceps. I mean, the body is a total A+ (I don’t think I have ever seen someone this buff, while still being proportionate), his face on the other hand… I mean, he does have a beautifully sculpted face and it looks rather perfect, don’t get me wrong, but he looks so angry with that deep frown between his brows and the mustache isn’t really my thing either. Kinda ruins his entire face, if I’m being honest. ‘Who are you?’ he asks, his voice monotone and already bored.

That is not a good start.

‘I’m Mia,’ I introduce myself with a smile, because smiles make people comfortable and this man does not look comfortable. ‘I live next door, in apartment 944. I brought you your mail.’ I extend my arm, so I can hand him the yellow envelope. ‘Thought it would be nice, since we’re neighbors after all.’

He rips the envelope out of my hand and is actually inspecting the seal on it. I am deeply offended. Why on earth would he think that low of me? As if I would snoop through other people’s mail.

After his thorough inspection, he looks at me again. His eyes take me in and leans against the doorframe, crossing his arms in front of his broad chest. The shirt has a slight v neck and is that a tiny bit of chest hair I detect?

I’m almost expecting something condescending leaving his lips (he seems like the type), but A. Walker doesn’t say a word. He simply stares at me and now I kinda regret bringing his mail with me.

He looks and acts like an utter asshole.

‘What’s your name?’ I carefully ask him. Despite him looking like an absolute dick, I do think this is a man you might want to have on your good side. After all, he is my neighbor, I don’t want him to hate me, especially since from the looks of it this man can break me in half with just his pinky, which is intimidating on its own.

‘August Walker,’ he says, tilting his head, as he seems to scan my entire face. ‘Aren’t you that soccer player?’

Before I can even stop it, a smile breaks out on my face. I always like it when people acknowledge the fact that I’m a soccer player. I worked really hard to get where I am now and when people recognize me as that soccer player, it makes me happy. ‘I am,’ I say with an even brighter smile.

Maybe he isn’t so bad after all…

‘I hate women’s soccer.’

I’m dumbfounded. Why on earth does he have to be so rude? What on earth did I do to him to deserve this? What a fucking dickhead. I can’t believe I was actually trying to make a good impression on him. Maybe I don’t want him to be on my good side. Maybe I sort of miss mister Toriello now, with his late night adventures with very noisy female customers. At least he was nice enough to bring me cookies every now and then, to apologize for the noise.

I highly doubt August Walker knows how to bake cookies, let alone buy some of them to apologize for the inconvenience, whatever that may be.

‘Why?’ I ask, as my expression falters.

‘It’s stupid,’ he simply states. To make it even worse, he adds a shrug, as if it’s a well known fact and not just some stupid opinion. ‘Not as advanced as male soccer.’

I frown, as I try to cover up the fact I’m deeply hurt. ‘Well, that’s okay. To each their own,’ I say to him. ‘If we are being frank here: I think your mustache is pretty stupid.’

He simply raises his eyebrows, while his eyes still look bored and annoyed. ‘You do?’ he asks me. ‘Why is that?’

‘I don’t know. It makes you look like a pedophile, really. Have a good day, mister Walker.’ I walk towards my own door and barge inside.

Who gave mister August Walker the right to be this rude to me, someone who he barely knows? What a piece of shit.

My big orange cat Bobo walks up to me and he starts to meow, pulling me out of my racing thoughts.

The hairy companion makes me instantly forget about my new neighbor. ‘Hi, Bobo,’ I say with a chuckle. ‘I missed you too, little fella.’ I place the bags on the floor, before I lift him up, to press tons of kisses on his head. He purrs in my ear. ‘I bought you some food, so that means you can finally stop putting your head in my bowl and be a decent cat from now on.’

‘Meow.’

‘That’s what I thought.’

Happy New Year

As we move into 2020 I like to reflect back over the year and this blog.

This year has been super weird. From finding out I had cancer to getting it removed and being declared cancer-free. Rebuilding my blog after I was terminated with no cause only to get my old blog back a year later. End Game. My state literally catching fire. Tumblr slowly dying. It’s been quite up and down. I’ll be glad to put an end to it.

What’s your eye color? brown, i’d say a lighter brown.

Scary movies or happy endings? def happy endings, I don’t like intentionally putting myself through bad things lmao.

Special talent? I can mimic cats perfectly.

Birthplace? CalifornIA.

Hobbies? Sketching, writing, singing, videography, resin (ofc), and heckin sims.

Pets? I have two fur siblings (Charlie and Max) and my own baby (Riley zoe) all kitties.

Do/have you played any sports? I went to an alt school, so I was on the football and softball team. I liked the softball.

Favorite subject in school? English, but I did have classes I hated but loved my teachers. ALSO I really found sociology fascinating. We also had yoga for gym which I liked.

Art Claims are a GO!

Claims for artists are open! The first round will go this week and then I'll post a new round on Thursday, opening it up for seconds. Everybody spread the word! Grab your artist friends, stuff them in a potato sack, and drag them here kicking and screaming if you have to! This year, art claims are working a little differently than in years past. We are using a google form to streamline things, which should make things easier both for you as participants and us mods. To claim a story, the form requires email, check in ID, and the identifying number of your first choice of story. Putting your top three choices is best in case your first or second has already been chosen. Please be sure you've read the FAQ before claiming.

Stories are listed by fandom in alphabetical order and then by story name, with a number identifying that story (for our records). Stories are first come, first serve. I'll update the post as stories are claimed. On Thursday, I'll temporarily close the form and post the stories that are left. Hopefully everything will get claimed this week. I have faith.
