Katie McGrath in a soft sweater reminded me I’d never posted this one even after working on it a little more

constantly thinking about the PERFECT setup supergirl season 1 had to make kara queer;

"oh my god, you're a lesbian" – winn to kara, in the very FIRST episode.

"hell, i wanna date her" – kara, about lucy lane.

"she does kinda give off a sapphic vibe, with that big old butch S chestplate" – leslie willis (livewire) about supergirl.

there were so many other instances in s1 alone, let alone in later seasons when lena showed up (recounting every queer-coded supercorp interaction would require a whole podcast). it was the PERFECT pretext to make her even just a little bit fruity, but the cw just couldn't handle it i guess

AU where Kara is still an assistant when Lena becomes CEO of CatCo. She makes some changes but one thing Cat tells her under no uncertain terms is that a) Kara stays, and b) she's destined to become a reporter when she's ready.

I'm going back and forth on whether Lena and Kara are friends at this point, or whether Lena simply takes on CatCo before they meet. But basically I want to see Kara having to a) build new connections to get Lena what she needs and b) learning what it's like to work for somebody who doesn't treat like dirt most days.

Like, imagine her standing dumbfounded the first time she brings Lena her coffee, because Lena simply thanks her, genuinely. And then the flush of pride when Lena comments in pleasant surprise when she discovers the coffee is perfectly warm-- not hot enough to scald, but not the usual tepidness of coffee thats had to travel three blocks to get to her.

Because Cat always took those little efforts for granted, as an expectation. But Lena smiles slyly as she regards Kara anew, and says "I think we're going to work together just fine."

Because Kara worked for Cat, not with her. And that small semantic means the world. Because its true-- Cat, and now Lena, wouldn't be able to do what she does without Kara doing what she does.

And that just makes Kara want to work all the harder. She finds she WANTS to stay late when Lena does, mostly because Lena urges her to go home, and that kind of kindness is the kind that's paid back by staunchly ignoring her and sticking around anyway. And she takes extra effort to learn all of Lena's preferences and idiosyncracies, so that she knows exactly what Lena needs when she's had a meeting with that particular board member she's outwardly civil to but clearly loathes.

The first and only time Kara brings Lena salmon for lunch, she's absolutely devastated when Lena looks at it, shoulders falling. "I forgot to tell you I can't stand salmon," she says, resignedly.

Kara's eyes go wide in horror. "Oh! No, that's okay, I'll just go--"

"Please don't bother, it's my fault, I never told you--"

"It's no problem at all. Just-- wait here okay?"

As if Lena would be anywhere but her desk. But in ten minutes, Kara returns with a greasy paper sack.

"I promise, this isn't a punishment for needing something last minute," Kara says quickly. "These are legitimately the best burgers in the city, and honestly, it's the greatest gift I could ever give you."

Okay. Maybe she's laying it on a little thick. But Lena only looks at her with a bemused smile. "All right," she slowly agrees. Her eyebrow quirks. "I'm assuming you picked up something similar for yourself?"

Kara blushes. "Yeah. Can't help myself."

"Good. Then you can eat with me."

Freezing, Kara feels like a deer in the headlights. For all that Lena has treatedher as an equal, they've never eaten together in the same room. They usually eat at their own desks, working through.

"Really?"

"Really." Lena's gaze turns artificially solemn. "If I'm going to have a self-induced heart attack, I better have someone there to call 911."

Unable to keep herself from grinning, Kara scuttles to retrieve her own burger and fries from her desk. And there, together, they share the first of many, many meals to come.

"I was expecting your call, and now, here you are."

Lena rolls her eyes and scoffs. "You haven't even heard what I have to say yet."

"I know what you're going to say!" Sam laughs over the phone. "Sam, come be my interim CEO so I can go play media conglomerate empress for a while."

"Well, I wasn't going to phrase it exactly like that." Lena groans. Lena knew when she picked up the phone and dialed Sam's number that Sam was clearly the best candidate to take over L-Corp, but Lena also knew it would come with light teasing from her old friend.

"Why did you buy Catco?" Sam questions. "Your whole thing was to move L-Corp to National City and transform it. Which, you're doing a stellar job of, by the way." Lena swells with pride. Sam isn't stingy with her praise, but it still means a lot to hear that from her. "Are you tired of it already?"

Lena pauses, considering. "There were a few reasons. But I did it mostly as a favor for a friend," she admits softly. She can hear Sam's smile over the phone.

"A friend, huh?" Sam asks innocently. "What's her name?"

Lena's cheeks flush. Was she that obvious, or does Sam just know her too well? Lena isn't sure. "Kara."

"Uh huh," Sam says slowly. "And do you or do you not want to pin her to your desk and make sweet lo—"

"Sam!" Lena hisses, her face turning red.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry. It's just so fun to tease you," Sam laughs. Lena's missed her laugh. Truthfully, asking Sam to come run L-Corp for her while she figures out the ropes with Catco is partly selfish. Not only would Sam do an excellent job with L-Corp, maybe even better than Lena herself, Lena just missed her. It would be good to be in the same city as her friend again.

There's a brief pause. "She must be pretty okay, if you were willing to spend millions of dollars on a dying medium as a favor to her."

Lena clears her throat. A vision of Kara's goofy, sweet smile, the way her eyes crinkle a little in the corners, appears in her mind. It makes her heart feel a little fluttery. "Yeah, she's pretty okay. Come to National City and see for yourself."

"I'll have to talk with Ruby about it first, but honestly, we could both use a change of scenery. Also, Ruby would love National City. She's been obsessed with Supergirl lately."

"You know, Kara knows Supergirl," Lena tempts.

"That, Miss Luthor, will win you brownie points in my daughter's book," Sam chuckles. "Hey, I have to run and pick Ruby up now, but I'll call with my answer tomorrow."

"Thanks, Sam." Lena hangs up the phone and turns in her desk chair to look out the window. Lena hadn't known what to make of National City when she first moved. It wasn't really all that different from Metropolis — same tall buildings downtown, same grungy streets. But National City was hers. She chose to come here, chose to move her company here, and formed a life for herself, all on her own, here. She rebuilt her company. She made friends. She formed a partnership with a Super. She beat the odds of what the world expected of her as a Luthor.

Lena smiles. National City was starting to feel like home.

Supergirl Headcanon

I have the most random headcanon that because of her super-hearing Kara can tell when people are pregnant. So she offers to carry heavy things for coworkers, “accidentally” grabs an extra decaf on coffee runs, she never questions when someone isn’t drinking at group gatherings. Maybe she brings extra snacks and offers them to everyone so people don’t feel singled out.

don’t be fooled by my undying love for kara danvers, i hated like, half of the decisions the writers made regarding the show’s lore. i find kara to be one for the few characters who actually got better as the show progressed (which is how character development works). she started out more shy and grew into a confident, capable and a well-respected woman. she made some real change and helped a lot of people outside of her superhero suit. the show had a great balance between kara danvers and supergirl. my love is for her story and character development, and her story and character development only. oh, and alex and j’onn! they were pretty neat too!

I feel like Sadie has the tenacity and spunk to survive at Catco under Snapper. But do you think Kara could last under Bruce at the Sentinel? I mean, especially if his main thing is wanting honesty and objectivity...I think she might struggle. Thoughts?

i love kara so much but there is absolutely no way she’d make it at the Sentinel.

if you really look at it, kara is horrible at her job. she is constantly leaving in the middle of the day and putting her position as supergirl ahead of work schedule and writing in general. we never see kara chasing a source, hunting people down for interviews, or doing intense research unless it’s for her benefit outside of catco. or unless lena is somehow involved (such as when she interviewed jack)

kara also struggles with objectivity, like you said. she can’t put her personal feelings and experiences aside. we see it in season 2, when she meets lena and initially writes a scathing article about her that snapper makes her scrap. and we see it continuously again with what she writes about lena. kara praises her in her articles the way a friend or partner would, not the way a hard hitting journalist would.

Kara would become increasingly frustrated working under bruce. she would feel very restricted. kara is also someone who isn’t really used to being told no. other than from Cat and Snapper- kara was pretty spoiled by eliza growing up (understandably so, considering everything she’d been through) and then in her adulthood. in season 1, j’onn pushes her and argues with her but alex always advocates for her and in the end, kara is never in any real danger of losing her job, even when j’onn is angry with her. i don’t know how much discouragement she would be able to handle at the Sentinel- especially when you throw in the fact that her coworkers there would not be on her side, they’d be rooting against her (like Dale)

i think even if she could hold her own at that kind of news outlet, she wouldn’t feel like it was the right place for her
