hi! mumfriend! i was wondering what your thoughts are on having an oc and then finding out there are others who have the same name for their oc as yours? or same faceclaim part of same family x canon pairing? is there an etiquette or protocol or understanding? wanting to get into fandom and sharing my fics again instead of just rambling to my significant other and keeping them for myself. i haven't really been involved since i was a teen, now well into my 20s lol

first of Imma need to preface this reply saying that a) we always need more OCs and more creators, so of course you should share what you have <3 and b) naturally I cannot speak for the whole community on this, but at least in my little bubble of the community here's how we roll-

(under a cut, because long answer, obviously)

FCs are all up for grabs. always. We all scramble for resources and we all go where they are good. eg I can't go "Oh Bruna Marquezine as Catarina de Lurton has such a beautiful aesthetic for a Dornish OC" and then be pissed when others use her, too. The number of FCs is finite, overlaps happen and that's nothing to be mad about.

I'd say - personally, for me - the same goes for names. I spent literal days in the alphabetized "Westerosi names for Women" list to find Elyana's name. Poor Discord girlies really suffered those days. I was so, so happy and proud when I decided on Elyana, made my first edit, posted and THEN realised that one of Madz's Dornish Diamonds was called Elyana as well 😬 It happens. We see or hear names we think are pretty and sometimes we don't even realise we might have seen them on another OC.

Now for the last bit - the background/story aspects - I think this is where it gets a little bit trickier to navigate. And again, just my very own. very personal opinion -

we all play in other ppl's sandboxes with our fanfictions. that comes with limitations or in world circumstances that are the same for us with all our OCs. So there are things that are bound to overlap - would I get mad at everyone else who has an OC who is friends with Lily Evans and/or the Marauders and ends up with Sirius Black, just because that is the premise for my girl Moira? No.

Now, if someone had an OC who is friends with Lily Evans and/or the Marauders, ends up with Sirius Black, has a daughter with him, wants to become a nurse, but then decides to lead a hermit's life instead after Sirius is imprisoned and ends up homeschooling her Sirius-Lookalike daughter while selling herbs for potion making and wood for wand making? Now THAT would prompt me to seek a conversation with that person 😅

Long story short - the universe is infinite, resources are not and as long as you don't lift whole chunks of background/story/plot from other people's OCs, you're good 😉

I feel like there's a lot of projecting onto Katarina? Like the harem imagines this future with her and don’t actually consider what she would want? That’s just the feel I’m getting from the anime.

Natalya Dostoevskaia sat at the Slytherin table, multitasking. She was listening to her friend Catarina talking about her family, practising her Romanian and eating her breakfast. "-and then my brother, Carlos, decided we should go, so my sister, Carlota, came to get me and- What are you doing here, Black?" Caterina abruptly stopped her story, causing Tasha to look up in confusion. "I need to speak to Natalya in private," said Sirius. Tasha raised her eyebrows at this but followed him out of the hall nevertheless. They didn't speak until they rounded a corner into an empty corridor. "So? What do you want?" demanded Tasha. "Well its more of a who–" Sirius' smirk was wiped off his face when he noticed Tasha's glare. "Okay, okay. We are having a party in the common room on Friday and I would like you to come." Tasha smiled slightly, "Can I bring friends?" "Of course." "I'll be there." Tasha walked away, biting her lip and looking forward to Friday. Tasha found Caterina and Tengaroa on her way to DADA, eventually a bigger group of people joined, until most if the Slytherins on their way to DADA were travelling with them. Tasha was at the center of the group joking and making snide remarks about the Marauders. "Bella, had your cousin ever heard of a hairdresser?" said Tasha slyly, her voice was as smooth as silk but bitter like ice. Bella crinkled her nose, "He is no cousin of mine. He is a blood traitor and a disgrace to the Black family." "Merlin, do you think you could maybe be less of a spoilsport? No wonder Lestrange comes crawling to me most nights." Tasha licked her lips and raised her eyebrows, watching Bellatrix's expression turn furious. She enjoyed pushing limits. It was true she and Roldolphus occasionally hooked up, but Tasha hooked up with a lot of people. Bellatrix's eyes narrowed and she opened her mouth to mutter a curse but Tasha blocked it immediately, "Bella, Bella," she tutted. "Must we squabble so much? You know I don't want to hurt you. Come on, we'll find you another boy on Friday, we have been invited to a Gryffindor party. I'll invite the whole Slytherins house." "Y'know," teased Tengaroa. "You and Severus could work out." Tasha smiled, "I can see it now, 'Snellatrix', the new 'it' couple of Hogwarts." Bellatrix snarled, "Over my dead body." Caterina stepped forwards, "Let's quicken the process then, y'know, Snape might be into necrophilia." "Kinky," said Tasha slyly. Bellatrix compressed a scream and ran to her next lesson. Tasha surveyed the hall and caught Sirius' eyes. He was stood outside the DADA classroom, leaning against the wall and chatting to his friends. She couldn't read his expression, but she knew if they were alone, he would pretend to be offended at her remark attacking his hair. She suppressed a smile at that thought and walked into DADA.
