Do you Know the difference?
Cocktail dresses, formal gowns and black tie looks. –Know the difference.
Do people still go to cocktail parties? You do if you work for the federal government in Washington DC. People with jobs at agencies, NGOs and consulting firms do the cocktail party circuit every night. High profile business events are also places where you’ll see cocktail dresses—at award ceremonies and tradeshow parties. And if you are millennial-age, your social schedule is packed with weddings, showers, and rehearsal dinners. My cousin in 2023 alone, had 10 weddings and all the related parties. For all these occasions, the dresses are different. Let’s start with the cocktail dress.
What to wear to a cocktail party
Typically, a short dress is the look. If the event is work related, women often show up in whatever they wore to work. That is a mistake, especially in today’s typical casual work attire.
You want to stand out, and there’s no better way to accomplish that than to wear something that says “I dressed for the occasion.” It shows your respect for those who invited you.
So, whether it’s cocktails followed by dinner or cocktails to celebrate a special occasion, you’ll want to wear something that shows off your best assets (not boobs), and that fits both the season and the occasions. Here’s some looks we love…
All of these looks are unique. The Nox Cocktail Dress with short skirt and spaghetti straps is ideal for a rehearsal dinner or a more formal event. If you’ve got the legs and the shoulders to pull this off, go for it. This one definitely calls for a cosmopolitan.  The Jordan Dress is a Floral Mikado with a jewel neckline and a midi-length skirt, perfect for the office cocktail party. It’s modest but definitely shows that you dressed for the occasion. Finally, we give you a little black dress that is truly a knock-out. The Nox Tulle Dress has an embroidered lace bodice and spaghetti straps with a flattering v-neckline.  The corset design on top is very “in” right now.
What sets the cocktail dress apart? From the sleek, sultry little black dress to the flirty bejeweled number with the swingy skirt, to the modest floral, mid-calf design, dressing up is back, and the cocktail dress is a staple, especially for young consumers whose social calendars call for a closet full of dresses.
Formal dresses find the spotlight
Weddings typically state up front if formal dress is required. For women, that typically means a long gown. If, however, you have only this occasion for a long gown and would prefer to wear a cocktail dress, find one that is formal and honors the event.
What’s hot now? The shapes and styles of formal dresses run the gamut, from mermaid shapes to ball gowns. No matter what you choose, remember that you can have the dress fitted so that it works on your body. Let’s start with glamour. Our Jovani beaded gown is long and sleek. The bodice makes the most of your bust line—revealing without being too much. This dress has just the right mix of glitter and a hint of transparency at the bottom. Gorgeous.
Were you blessed with shapely legs? Our Fitted Sleeveless Gown combines elegant simplicity, a leg revealing slit, and a simple sweetheart bodice with spaghetti straps. Best of all is the color. This comes in emerald green, hot pick, and soft lavender.
Do you simply prefer a formal dress with a shorter skirt? No worries; there are no hard and fast rules as to the length of the skirt. It all about standing out with the right look (just to be clear, that doesn’t mean going as Cat Woman.)
One of the hottest colors is, of course, red. And our Jovani Red Strapless Fit and Flare dress is a show stopper. The tulle fabric is covered with lacy embroidered detail. This red stunner will stand out on the dance floor, draw attention from across the room, and work for any dressy occasion. Pair with black high heel sandals or a fancy pump.
The right look for black tie events
What’s a black-tie occasion? Some would say a Hollywood award ceremony is a good example. True, but if you can’t afford Yves St. Laurent, here are some looks that could pass at the Oscars, but for a lot less.
The Dolla Nox Black-One Shoulder Gown hits all the marks for formality and grace. What distinguishes this mermaid-style gown is the full ruffle sitting atop the shoulder. It provides a dramatic accent that gives the simple lines a dressy signature. Some would say a Hollywood award ceremony is a good example. True, but if you can’t afford Yves St. Laurent, here are some looks that could pass at any black tie event, but for a lot less.
If you prefer a more classic look, we recommend our Nox Lavender Gown. The skirt is flowy and features a slit to show off one long leg. The color is accented with a see-through at the waist corset bodice. And the lacy fabric gives a dressy look to the beautiful sweetheart neckline.

How to Choose the Right High End Bridal Dresses
When you go to a bridal salon, they will most likely have a variety of dresses for you to choose from. How do you know which one is the right one for you? There are a few things you should keep in mind when dress shopping. First, think about your budget. High End Bridal Dresses can be very expensive, so it's important to set a budget before you start shopping. Once you know how much money you're willing to spend, you can narrow down your options. Next, consider your body type. Not all dresses will look good on every body type, so it's important to find a dress that flatters your figure. If you're not sure what style of dress will look best on you, ask the salesperson for help. They should be able to point you in the right direction. Finally, think about the formality of your wedding. If it's a casual affair, you might want to choose a less formal dress. But if your wedding is more formal, an elaborate gown might be more appropriate. Once you've considered these factors, you should have a better idea of what kind of dress to look for when shopping at a bridal salon. Keep an open mind and try on different styles until you find the perfect one for your big day!
The Different Types of High End Bridal Dresseses
When you’re planning your wedding, it’s important to find a dress that fits your style and personality. There are many different types of High End Bridal Dresseses to choose from, so it’s important to do your research before you start shopping. The most popular type of High End Bridal Dresses is the A-line dress. This style is fitted at the waist and flares out at the bottom, creating a flattering silhouette for any body type. If you’re looking for something a little more unique, you might want to consider a mermaid or trumpet style dress. These dresses are fitted through the entire length of the dress and often have a dramatic skirt that flares out at the bottom. If you’re not sure what style of dress is right for you, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with a bridal consultant. They can help you try on different styles of dresses and give you an idea of what will look best on your big day.

Saving Grace: Chapter Thirty-Eight
Pepper takes Grace to a bridal boutique.
Tumblr media
“Are you sure we need to be looking at dresses this early?”
Grace asked Pepper as a saleswoman sat them down on a couch in a chic bridal boutique and another woman brought them glasses of champagne. She and Steve had only been engaged for a few months, hadn’t settled on a date yet even, but Pepper had already lined up meetings with wedding planners and pulled a few strings to get this appointment to shop for gowns. The boutique was exclusive, appointment only, and they typically booked up six months in advance.
“It’s never too early to look,” Pepper insisted, sipping her champagne and glancing around at the racks of extravagant white gowns all around them. “You said you didn’t know what style you want, so if nothing else, you can start to get ideas about what you might want.”
Grace looked around, sipping her champagne and hoping the nerves weren’t showing too much. Tony and Steve were on a mission somewhere on the other side of the world again and as always, it had her a bit on edge. The idea of wedding dress shopping in that moment didn’t hold a whole lot of appeal for her, but Pepper had been so excited she couldn’t say no.
“Hello, Miss Potts, Miss Turner,” another saleswoman in a crisp black skirt suit came over, smiling broadly. It was no secret who they were or that Tony would be footing the bill for whatever gown his daughter chose, so she clearly had her eyes set on a hefty commission.
“Doctor Turner,” Grace and Pepper corrected her in unison and watched her falter.
“So sorry, Dr. Turner,” she recovered quickly. “First of all, congratulations on your engagement. My name is Sophia and I will do everything I can to help you find your perfect gown. I like to start out by asking a few questions of my bride, get to know some details.”
“Ok,” Grace glanced at Pepper, nervous.
“Tell me a little about you and your fiancé,” Sophia clapped her hands together.
After the reassurances from Pepper that the entire staff had signed NDAs, Grace told her a little about Steve, their relationship, how he’d proposed, that they were thinking about an Autumn wedding. It was one of the things they’d discussed since he’d moved back into the tower from the compound, now that they’d finished basic training for the newest Avengers. They hadn’t set a specific date or chosen a venue, but they had toured some farms upstate, not far from the compound. Truthfully, they weren’t in much of a rush.
“Now, have you thought about the style of gown you want?” Sophia jumped back in.
“Not at all,” she admitted with a shrug. “I figured today would just be throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if anything stuck.”
“I think she might look good in something flowy,” Pepper interjected. “Nothing that looks like a cupcake.”
“Why don’t we take a look around, I’ll make some suggestions, we’ll pull things you like,” Sophia suggested, gesturing for Grace and Pepper to join her.
They walked from rack to rack and Sophia pulled a variety of gowns to show them, describing in great detail the beading or lace work, explaining things about draping, stitching, gathering, the needs for petticoats and so on. Almost every gown in the store was strapless but Sophia insisted any gown could have straps or sleeves added. There were formal ball gowns with full skirts, fitted skirts that looked like mermaid tails, skimpy cocktail dresses, which Sophia said were usually a second dress for the reception. Grace could see the dollar signs in her eyes as she detailed how some brides had a formal gown for the ceremony, something a little less formal for photos, and something casual for the reception.
“Do you have a price point you need to stay under?”
“No,” Pepper answered, shaking her head, her signature high ponytail swaying behind her. “We’d like to keep things reasonable though. Nothing too over the top.”
“I’m not comfortable spending more than a thousand dollars on a dress I’m only going to wear once,” Grace interjected, casting a horrified glance at Pepper. She leaned in to whisper. “Are you sure this isn’t too much, Pepper? I mean, these gowns are really expensive.”
She hadn’t seen a single gown priced under five thousand dollars on any of the racks they’d looked at already. That was more than she felt comfortable spending on any piece of clothing, let alone a dress she’d only wear for one day.
“Grace,” Pepper smiled fondly at her, taking her hands. “You don’t have to worry about the price. Just find the dress you love.”
“Let’s try to keep it at or under five thousand,” Grace told Sophia, whose face fell, but only for a moment.
They picked eight different gowns to try first, all of varying styles. There were different shades to try from too, ivory, cream, champagne. She tried them all on, hoping each time that it would be the one. But nothing felt right.
“Not that one either?” Pepper asked, seeing the look on Grace’s face as she looked at her reflection, trying not to frown. “That silhouette is nice on you.”
“I think it’s the color,” Grace admitted. “I hate white.”
But it wasn’t just the color. A painful, grief-striken feeling had sunk in and Grace didn’t know if she could go on much longer. Sophia had put her in a dozen dresses at that point and she felt herself growing more and more depressed, not excited, not hopeful.
“Let’s get you out of this,” Sophia insisted, helping her down from the pedestal where she modeled each dress for Pepper. “I’ll see what I can find in the back. Something with color.”
“Thanks, but I think I’m done for the day.”
Grace shook her head, feeling her eyes burning, a telltale sign that tears weren’t far away. If not for the dress weighing her down, she would’ve bolted back into the dressing room. Not that she wanted to make a scene, but since everyone had already signed NDAs, if she did have a minor meltdown, they couldn’t tell anyone. And if they tried, she knew her dad would sue the shit out of them. And this was one instance in which she’d encourage him to go for it.
“Ok, hon,” Sophia seemed to note her mood shift. “Why don’t we go get you out of this.”
“I’ve got it,” Pepper got up from her seat on the couch and took Grace’s hand, leading her back to the changing room. She peered both ways down the little hall to make sure that they were alone, before closing the door. “All right, kiddo,” she started in on the long line of buttons down the back of the dress. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Grace,” Pepper leaned around her so she could look her in the eye, letting her know that she didn’t buy it. “Come on, something is wrong.”
“I…” there really wasn’t an easy way to tell the truth, because she knew it would hurt her feelings. “I just always thought this was something I’d do with my mom.” She sniffled.
“Oh, Grace,” Pepper came around in front of her and wrapped her up in a hug as she broke down. She rubbed her back and stroked her hair as Grace pressed her forehead against her shoulder and cried silent, subdued tears. “I’m sorry. I’ve been so excited to be here with you for all this wedding stuff, I didn’t stop to think about how you might be missing your parents.”
“I love that you’re excited for me, and I love having you helping me with all this wedding stuff, but I’m struggling,” she clung to Pepper like a life raft in a choppy sea. “I’m a shrink, I know all the stuff to expect with grief, how to deal with it, but I’m not doing great. I should be happy, because I have you and I have Dad. That’s so much more than I ever hoped for, but I miss my Mom and Dad.”
Pepper squished her closer and continued to rub her back as she cried. It wasn’t an ugly, uncontrollable sob, just silent tears and weak sniffles. Grace had known since she was a kid that her parents might not be around for big milestones in her life. Graduating high school, college and med school very young had helped a little on that front, and they’d been there in the crowd at each ceremony, cheering her on, giving her flowers and telling her how proud they were of her. But they had been in their mid-fifties when they adopted her so she had always braced herself to experience a huge chunk of her life without them. Then the car accident happened and they were gone sooner than she expected. It didn’t seem fair.
“I thought I’d worked through all of this,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s been almost eight years. I didn’t think it would be this hard still.”
“It’s ok, Grace,” Pepper reassured her. “Of course you’re sad, of course it’s difficult. You let yourself be sad. I’ll ease up on the planning too.” She pulled back and wiped the tears away from Grace’s eyes and cheeks with the pads of her thumbs. “Today was just to get ideas. You don’t have to pick a dress yet. You don’t have to pick a wedding planner, date, venue, anything. Take all the time you need.”
“Thank you,” she hugged her tighter.
There was a knock on the door of the dressing room, making Grace pull in a deep breath and step back, wiping her eyes hastily. She opened the door and found Sophia on the other side with a golden wedding gown in her arms.
“I know you said you were done,” she said, “but I saw this while I was in the back and I thought you might like to give it a shot. Flowy skirt, corseted bodice, off the shoulder. And it’s on sale,” she added, clearly worried that Grace would cut her off. “It’s fifteen hundred, so a little more than you personally wanted, but still very reasonable.” She glanced down at the gown in her arms. “The color will complement whatever suit your groom wears and, well, it made me think of the gold in Mr. Stark’s Iron Man armor, so I thought maybe you might like that.”
“That’s very kind of you, Sophia,” Pepper smiled gently, “but I think we’re done for the day.”
“I do like the color though,” Grace spoke up, eyeballing the dress. It caught her attention far more than any other she’d seen that day. “It’s beautiful.”
“We can do whatever you want, Gracie,” Pepper encouraged her. “If you want to try it on, you try it on.”
“It feels nice,” she toyed with the fabric. “And it’s priced well,” she mused. “I think I want to try it. You go back out to the couch and if I like it, you’ll get to see it.”
“Ok,” Pepper nodded, brushing Grace’s hair back and tucking it behind her ear and kissing her on the cheek before slipping out of the dressing room.
Sophia stepped in, hanging the dress up before helping her get out of the one she’d had on. It seemed like there must have been a hundred buttons to undo, but once they got it off and Grace stepped into the golden gown, she felt a breathless, magical sensation. Running her hands down the corseted bodice, she admired her reflection. The off the shoulder sleeves were sheer and gauzy and starburst patterns of gemstones covered every inch of the skirt, twinkling like a starry night. It was airy and delicate, everything Grace hadn’t known she wanted.
“I see that sparkle in your eye,” Sophia grinned in the mirror from behind her, still fastening up the back. “This is the one, isn’t it?”
“I think it is,” Grace nodded.
“Let’s go show Miss Potts.”
The saleswoman beamed, her eyes crinkling up with glee. Grace had a feeling that despite not getting the big commission she probably anticipated when she heard she’d be finding a dress for Tony Stark’s daughter, Sophia took pride in finding every one of her brides their perfect dress. She practically bounced along behind Grace as she floated her way back to the pedestal and stepped up. Pepper’s jaw dropped and she lit up, clapping her hands together in front of her mouth as she grinned from ear to ear. Grace couldn’t stop laughing and blushing, the low from five minutes prior shifting to a much higher high.
“You look divine,” Pepper exclaimed. “Grace, if you don’t buy that dress –”
“Oh, this is the one,” Grace turned around to look at herself in the triple paneled mirror, turning this way and that to see every angle. “I feel like a goddess.”
Pepper paid for the gown, which would be properly packed and delivered on another day, and they made their way home in the town car, with Grace feeling more open to talking about wedding planning than she had been earlier. Admitting that she missed her Mom, acknowledging the pain, seemed to lessen it. She told Pepper about one particular farm she and Steve had looked at upstate with a spectacular barn turned event space, how she wanted to give out caramel apples as favors, and how she wanted Steve to be in a royal blue suit, because blue was absolutely his color.
“I have a picture of one, let me show you,” Grace pulled out her phone and turned it on, waiting for it to boot up.
“Oh, I should check to see if your father’s texted,” Pepper pulled her phone out of her pocket and turned it back on as well.
They’d agreed to have a no phones afternoon while in the boutique, so Grace fished hers out as well. As both phones came to life, the backseat of the car was filled with a chorus of notification pings that brought the high of the day’s outing crashing to the ground.
“Avengers cause mayhem in Lagos,” she read one headline out loud. “At least seven dead, hundreds injured.”
A heavy sigh escaped Pepper’s lips as she clicked her phone off and put it away again. Propping her elbow against the car door, her head in her hand, she went to a weird contemplative place, the one she always went to when things went awry in the superhero world. She didn’t talk about it a lot, but Grace knew that her dad being a superhero stressed Pepper out in ways that very few other people could understand. They relied heavily on each other when their boyfriends were out saving the world together, focused mostly on distraction, trying to avoid the gnawing fear that maybe this time would be the mission that Steve or Tony or both never came back from. Anything could happen and being the ones left behind caused an indescribable lingering dread. Being the ones to comfort them when they came home was a battle no one could ever prepare for either. There was no guide for consoling your superhero when they couldn’t save everyone. Grace often likened it to being a military spouse, but the stakes were often much higher.
“I know that what your father does is good,” Pepper murmured, eyes shut, face pained. “I know it comes from a good place, but I wish he could walk away. Maybe it’s selfish of me, but sometimes I just want a normal life, not battling evil robots, aliens, psycho evil genius ex-boyfriends. I want to be able to have a life where he does good things the way other people do, volunteering, raising awareness for charitable causes, donating money. Not fist fighting actual supervillains.”
“I know,” Grace knew how hard it was for her to say anything that seemed remotely like it might be complaining. She felt the same way about Steve being Captain America a lot of the time. “It’s hard, knowing the world needs them but wishing it didn’t. I don’t think it’s selfish to want a normal life. It’s … normal.”
Pepper pinched her brow, massaging lightly as though a headache were coming on. She opened her eyes and turned to look at Grace.
“Do you ever think about asking Steve to give it up?”
“All the time,” she laughed. “And I feel like an absolute monster for it every time it crosses my mind.”
“Because the world needs Captain America, just like it needs Iron Man,” Pepper sighed.
“Steve insists that when we have kids, I guess when I get pregnant, he’ll retire,” Grace said. “I don’t know how to tell him that I wish he’d be willing to give up saving the world for me, not just for our potential children.”
“I don’t think they know how to do anything else at this point,” Pepper shook her head. “I really don’t. What’s your father going to do all day if he’s not updating his armor and running off on missions?”
“Oh, he’ll find something to keep himself occupied,” Grace snickered. “All that wild genius energy, he’ll put it to good use. Probably put half of the other tech startups in the world completely out of business singlehandedly. Steve on the other hand…all he’s ever known is being a soldier. And before that all he knew was wanting to be a soldier, training to be a soldier, obsession with figuring out how to become a soldier. Dad was always an inventor before. It feels like Steve will lose his whole identity.”
The car came to a stop in front of Stark Tower and the valets came hurrying around to each passenger side door to let them out. They walked side by side into the residential lobby, where the security staff greeted them as always with a friendly hello, which they returned.
“Friday, is Tony home yet?” Pepper asked when they stepped into the elevator.
“Yes, Miss Potts,” the AI answered as the elevator began its rapid ascent to the penthouse. “Mr. Stark, Captain Rogers, and Agent Romanoff are all on premises.”
“Well, how about you deal with your boyfriend, I’ll deal with mine, and we all meet up for dinner in the penthouse, say around seven?” Pepper suggested and Grace nodded.
Without having pressed the button, Friday stopped the elevator on the floor for Steve’s apartment. Really it had become Steve and Grace’s place since he’d come back from his six-month stint training the newest Avengers. She had moved more clothes and stuff down from the penthouse, slept there pretty much every night, and ate most of her meals there as well.
“I’ll see you at dinner,” Grace gave Pepper a kiss on the cheek. “Give Dad a hug for me.”
“Of course,” she nodded.
The lights were out in the living room when she got into the apartment and tossed her purse and keys on the table by the door. Standing silent for a moment, she heard the faint sound of water running, coming from the direction of the master bath, so she made her way back there. Steve’s shield lay on the foot of the bed, his suit balled up in the hamper. Grace knew from experience not to look too closely at it, since he only ever balled it up like that when there was blood or soot or both. It felt funny, knowing that her superhero boyfriend just popped his suit in the washing machine at the end of the day.
Feels like there should be some sort of superhero laundry service or specialized machine. Not just your every day casual cycle in the front loader.
She ran a hand over the shield, not only the universal symbol of all the good her boyfriend stood for, but also a piece of equipment fashioned by her grandfather’s hands for his friend, the thing that kept him safe while he saved the world. The shower cut off and Grace stepped away from the shield, knowing that Steve really didn’t like her thinking too much on his superhero identity. He was probably already upset about the collateral damage, she didn’t want to add to it. A minute later, Steve stepped out of the bathroom, towel wrapped around his waist, wet hair slicked back. He caught sight of her and a brief, soft smile crossed his lips.
“Hey,” he strode over and cupped her face, tilting it upwards so he could kiss her softly. She watched his eyes close blissfully as their lips met, before she melted into him, eyes shutting too. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too,” she answered. “I saw the news...”
“Don’t.”
He shook his head before his head fell, chin to his chest, unable to look her in the eye. He wandered away, going to his dresser. He opened up a drawer and began rooting around for a pair of boxers. Once he found the pair he was looking for and pulled them on, he dropped his towel into the hamper on top of his suit, as though trying to bury it. Heaving a sigh, he plucked his shield up and carried it into the closet, where he always kept it on a top shelf, out of sight. Grace felt her heart ache when she saw how drawn his face was, the unspoken burden of feeling like a failure. Without a word, she hurried over and pulled him into a hug, resting her head against his bare chest as she wrapped him tightly in her arms. There were times when she knew to push him to talk and others when she knew all he really needed was to be held. This was one of those instances when nothing she could say would make a difference. She knew he had already thought of anything she could possibly say to try and ease his guilt. Steve clutched her tight to his chest, resting his head atop of hers, taking deep breaths in an attempt to soothe himself.
“There was a Hydra agent,” he muttered, “he mentioned Bucky. Said that Bucky recognized me, knew me the first time he saw me again in D.C. It distracted me and because it distracted me, people died.”
“You’re a human being, Steve,” she tipped her face upward to look at him. “You can’t expect yourself to never get distracted, to never react emotionally, to never have normal human responses to things. You can’t beat yourself up for that. It’s ok to be upset that lives were lost, but—”
“But I can’t let it consume me,” he sighed, repeating the advice she always gave him. “I know,” he glanced down, a frown still on his lips. “I just need a little time. Maybe some distraction.”
“Well, we’re supposed to have dinner with my Dad and Pepper tonight,” she offered. “Last I heard Dad wants to break in his new pizza oven and he’s been going on and on about some culinary blog post all about pickle pizza, so there should be plenty to distract.”
Steve chuckled, genuinely amused. With one final squeeze and a kiss to the top of her head, he let her go and wandered back over to his dresser to find some clothes. Grace dropped to a seat on the foot of the bed, watching him, entranced by the way his back muscles rippled underneath his skin with every motion. A fluttering sensation filled her as she did.
“So, what did you and Pepper do today?” He asked, stooping down to pull a pair of black jeans out of the bottom drawer.
“Oh,” Grace felt silly telling him about it, since it seemed so frivolous compared to what he’d done in the last forty-eight hours, but he said he wanted distraction. “Pepper got me an appointment at a really swanky bridal boutique to try on wedding gowns.”
“Oh?” Steve turned around and stepped one foot into his jeans, then the other. “Even though we haven’t set a date?”
He pulled the jeans up over his hips, buttoned and zipped them, and Grace felt a heat between her legs, eyeing his half-naked body, wondering if it would be inappropriate, given the circumstances of his day, to coax him into bed. She could never be sure where that line was, from day to day, mission to mission, but she couldn’t help but be turned on by him, dressed, half-dressed, or naked.
“Focus, Grace,” he laughed, snapping his fingers in front of her face.
“Sorry, she grinned sheepishly, a burning blush spreading through her cheeks. “I can’t help it sometimes. You’re ridiculously attractive.”
“So, you’ve said, many times,” he laughed. “You don’t exactly make things easy for me either, you know,” he smirked, making her whole body burn.
He turned around and pulled open the drawer he kept his short sleeve shirts in, rummaging around for one he wanted to wear. He pulled out a black Guns N’ Roses shirt, a gift from Tony, and pulled it on. He had mentioned that he had enjoyed a few of their songs, after Tony had recommended them, and the shirt had shown up a few days later. The sleeves strained against his biceps and his torso tested the tensile strength of the rest of it as well.
“Did you have any luck at the boutique?” He asked.
He opened up a small top drawer, choosing a watch and placing it on his wrist, taking his time to clasp it. Despite the fact that, like everyone, he typically had his cellphone on him at all times, he insisted on wearing a watch every day. It was a simple little luxury he’d never thought he could have when he was a kid, so now that he had a little more money to play with, and friends who could gift him nice watches, he had a whole collection of very nice wristwatches. The one he was putting on was one Grace had bought him for Christmas the previous year, with a black leather band and gold accents.
“I did,” she nodded. “It’ll go very nicely with that beautiful blue suit I want you to get. Oh, and this morning that farm we liked, the one with that beautiful barn?” He nodded. “They emailed me to let me know they have September fifteenth free next year.”
The fifteenth of September was the date they considered their official anniversary, the day that Grace had gone out to D.C. the first time. They had agreed that was the day they wanted to get married, so as to keep everything simple. Nothing else in their lives ever seemed to be, so it felt like a good thing to hold onto. Steve brightened as he came over and leaned down to kiss her.
“Tell them we’ll take it,” he insisted. “Then we can send save the dates, which I’m sure Pepper will be thrilled about.”
“If you think I’m the only one getting dragged to the stationary store to look at eight hundred different paper and font combinations, think again, Captain,” she stated.
“I’m not about to abandon my best girl,” he shook his head before looking her deeply in the eye, “I’m with you every step of the way.”

Blue. Everything was blue.
From the bubbles you exhaled to the sun streaming through the window. It was all blue.
Even though you’ve been staying here for about a week, you still couldn’t get used to waking up like this. Underwater. Trapped in a fairytale-like world.
Was this how Triton felt adjusting to the human realm?
“Mom?” As if summoned by your thoughts, you felt Triton shift in bed next to you. The mattress slightly caving in as the young boy cuddled close to your side. “You okay?”
“…yeah.”
You shouldn’t be the one asking me that, you can’t help but think. After all that happened last night, Triton should be the one more shaken up.
…What has this young boy gone through?
Gently, you reach down and run one of your hands through Triton’s hair. It’s silky and soft texture felt ethereal in the water-like environment. Like as if it was threads of gold tediously woven slowly by hand.
“Mom….?” Your hand pauses as Triton lifts his head to look at you. Blue… It must be because you two were underwater but Triton’s eyes were a striking bright blue today. Unlike their usual pale grayish version. Seems like everything would truly be covered in blue while you were here, “Are you sure you—“
“My, oh my. This is unexpected.”
At the sudden new voice, you jolt out of bed. It seemed like you couldn’t even get a bit of peace for a second in the place. However, as you take in the figure that was at the door you soon pause.
A butler? A human looking one at that. Was he perhaps a siren or mermaid? But he also had no tail…
“Hermes!” You feel yourself choke slightly at what Triton shouts. Hermes? As in the Messenger god? He looked nothing at all like the mythology books.
“Good day, Master Triton.” Hermes greets as Triton comes crawling out of bed and up to him. As you watch Triton start telling Hermes a story about something, you see Hermes' gaze shift from the young boy in front of him to you. Red… You are cut off guard as you notice Hermes’ eyes were a surprising color of scarlet red. As in the most ripe apples and cherries or that of a deep red ruby. However that wasn’t what entranced you the most. No, it was the unusual spider web irises that accompanied those pits of red.
“By the way, What brings you here, Hermes?” Thankfully at Triton’s question, Hermes' gaze turns away from you. Allowing you to release a breath you didn’t know you were holding. You weren’t sure what it was but for some reason you felt like you had to be careful around him.
Hesitantly, you pull the covers off of your form and make your way out of bed next to Triton. You didn’t want to get closer to Hermes but you also didn’t want Triton to be left alone with the young man. Who knows what the god could be up to, “Master Zeus wanted me to return a special package to you.”
“A package?”
Nervously, you let out a small gulp as Hermes disappears back into the hallway to grab the mysterious “package”. Should you make a run for it? After all, it could possibly be dangerous. He could—
“Here it is.”
“Ack!” You can’t help but let out once you see what Hermes is holding in his arms. Did Zeus really order Hermes to go all the way to the mortal realm to grab that?
“Alexander the Great!” Triton cheers out as he grabs the ginormous king turtle from Hermes. Clearly happy to be reunited with his trusty stuffed animal. “Oh! I know the perfect spot to put you.”
You watch as Triton races across the room to a corner filled with fluffy pillows and blankets. Even here it seemed he built those nest-like beds. You wondered where he got such a thing from.
“Now, My Lady…”  Startled by the warm breath on the shell of your ear, you feel yourself freeze before shakily turning to look at Hermes standing close next to you, “I have a package from Zeus for you as well.”
“O-Oh really…?” You hesitantly say as you take a step away from the god. Was personal space not a thing for them?
“Yes, now if you would follow me.” Hermes states, gesturing to the door.
“Thank you but I’m going to grab it later. I want to stay with Triton for now.”
“Oh but my Lady. I insist.”
“I’m really fin—“ You are cut off as Hermes places his hands around your waist and proceeds to carry you out of the room. He was so fast you hardly had time to blink or even realize what he had done.
“We will be right back, Master Triton.” Hermes shouts out to the young boy as he leaves the room and makes his way into the hallway. Finally able to realize what is going on, you grab at Hermes’ hands on your waist. Futility attempting to get him to let go of you.
“Hey! Let go of me.” You shout out to the god. However, the only thing you got was a curious eyebrow raise in return.
“Oh.” Hermes let out as if suddenly realizing something. Interested you pause at your fighting, only to soon regret it as you see a dangerous gleam in his eyes. As if a mischievous plan was forming in his head, “I apologize My Lady, I wasn’t thinking. You must be used to the way Master Poseidon holds you.”
“H-Hey—EEepp.”
Instantly, in pure terror, you grab onto Hermes shoulders as he throws you lightly up in the air. Thankfully, you didn’t squeal too hard as you had already known what he was possibly referring to about how ‘Poseidon holds you’.
“Now, is this more comfortable, My Lady?” Hermes asks as he holds you bridal style in his arms. What in the world was with gods and their need to hold Humans, or possibly lesser beings, this way?
Now embarrassed, especially at how the maids and servants whisper to each other as you two walk by, you give up the need to fight Hermes. Knowing there was no chance in hell you would be able to get away anyways with how strong he was compared to you.
“Lord Hermes—“
“Please, just call me Hermes.” The messenger god states cheerfully as he cuts you off. As if he totally didn’t just kidnap you.
After letting out a small sigh in frustration, you continue, “Alright, Hermes. Where are you taking me?”
“Just to the main foyer, My Lady.”
At Hermes' simple minded answer, you feel your eyebrow twitch slightly. If you weren’t already afraid of the god, you bet you would have smacked that smug look off his face by now. You could clearly see now how Hermes was the Son of Zeus, “Okay… So, Why are you taking me there?”
“To meet someone special that Master Zeus invited.”
.
..
You swore to god.
“Who is that special someone?” You state, making sure to emphasize on your question this time. As if sensing your frustration, Hermes, clearly pleased with your reaction, smiles slightly.
“Scylla. You are meeting Lady Scylla.”
“…Scylla…?”
You feel yourself pause at the name, an odd sense of familiarity blooming in your brain. You had definitely heard that name before but… where….?
“Scylla, as in Scylla and Charybdis.” Hermes explains, his smile growing wider as he takes in the confused look on your face. As you ponder the second name, it finally hits you about why it had all sounded so familiar.
Scylla was a legendary monster in Greek mythology that lived on one side of a narrow channel of water, opposite to her counterpart Charybdis.
Scylla's description varied from tale to tale but she was often described as a female monstrosity. Her lower body consisted of six serpent-like heads on long snaky necks, each head having a triple row of shark-like teeth. Then, on her stomach were the heads of ferocious dogs.
However, it wasn’t her appearance or the fact that she was a monster that startled you the most. No.
Scylla wasn’t always a monster. No, she used to be a nymph. There are two tales that explained as to why Scylla was turned into a monster in the first place. One of them being, as well as the most frightening one to you, was that…
…Amphitrite was jealous of Scylla.
“W-why am I meeting with Scylla?” You questioned outloud to Hermes. Whose grin only seemed to grow once you asked him.
“Pardon me but it is much more fun if you find out yourself.” Hermes explained casually as he stops in front of a room. He wasn’t…
“Wait—“
“Have a fun time, My Lady.”
And with that, Hermes proceeded to shove you in the room and close the doors behind you. That bastard… you knew you shouldn’t trust him.
“Are you Lady (y/n)?”
Freezing, you look across the room in the direction of the voice. There was no doubt that it was Scylla. But,…
You find yourself pausing as you gaze down at her abdomen.
“Pomeranians?” Instantly, after the word slips out, you cover your mouth. Great going there, (y/n).
Though, it wasn’t just the fact that the supposed ‘ferocious dogs’ were sophisticated Pomeranian that caught you off guard. The lady, well ex-nymph, before you looked about in her late 50s and was dressed quite modestly. Yet also very sophisticated.
“Yes, they are Pomeranians.” Scylla answers, seeming to take a pause as she sips from her teacup before continuing, “Now, as I asked before, Are you Lady (y/n)?”
“Oh, I apologize. I am Lady (y/n).” You answer back, not missing how Scylla eyebrows slightly twitch.
“…It seems I have a lot of work…” You hear Scylla mumble lightly under her breath as she proceeds to shake her head. What was she talking about?
“…Pardon?”
“Oh, nothing. Please take a seat, Lady (y/n).”
Carefully, you make your way across the room to sit at the table. As you do so, you don’t miss the chance to notice how extravagant the room was. Not only was it made of marble and intricate gold carvings like the rest of Triton’s Manor but it also had a beautiful ceiling mural and, next to where the table that Scylla was sitting, a wall to wall and floor to ceiling grand window view.
As you take a seat down across from Scylla, you have to hold yourself back from gasping as you could now take in the full view. There were arrays of colorful Coral reefs and plants. Some that you have never ever seen, perhaps they only grew in the realm of the gods and were special in some way. However, it was past the Coral reefs that were placed outside the window that gained your interest. Far out in the horizon, stood what looked like a grand underwater city that looked fresh out of a futuristic sci-fi movie with its intricate buildings and colorful lights.
“Ahem.” At Scylla’s cough, you finally turn your attention back to the older woman, “I will now formally introduce myself. I am Scylla, a former nymph that worked for Lord Poseidon. As well as…
…Triton’s former Nanny.”
“I see.” You let out as you take in the information the woman has told you. It seemed like just how the other gods were different from mythology so was Scylla. But, you couldn’t write off anything about Scylla yet. You didn’t know her full intentions on accepting to come to see you here today. “Can I ask why you came to see me today, Lady Scylla?”
“Of course.” Scylla answers as she carefully places her teacup back down on its plate and looks at you, “I am not here to hurt you but rather to help you. My first duty in coming here is informing you about everything you need to know. From Master Triton’s childhood to Lady Amphitrite nature, I am hoping to tell you everything possibly important I have seen in over the millennia I have worked for the family.”
Now you understand why she was here. If you didn’t understand the inner workings or secrets of the family, it could honestly get you killed. And that could count for either Poseidon or Amphitrite. It also makes sense why Zeus specifically sent her as he still had the intentions of you replacing Amphitrite as Poseidon’s wife. So, knowing what makes Poseidon tic would be crucial.
“My second reason for coming here is to teach you the proper etiquette of the gods.”
You feel your thoughts come to a screeching halt at her statement, “Huh?”
“I’m going to be honest with you, Lady (y/n),” Scylla vocalizes as she shakes her head, “Since you are a human, you are considered at the bottom in our realm. If the citizens of Atlantis don’t like you, they will kill you. If you disrespect a god or goddess, they will kill you. If someone wants your spot on the throne, they will kill you. If you aren’t strong or smart enough, you will get killed. Respect, etiquette and knowledge are the three things that will keep you alive here…”
Scylla pauses as she looks around to make sure that no one was nearby to hear what she would say next.
“Lady (y/n).” Scylla starts as she surprisingly reaches across the table to hold your hands. “I know of Lord Zeus’ plan to make you the next queen. As a former Nymph, where my kind is often taken advantage of by gods just like humans, I beg of you. Do not. Follow. Zeus’. Plan. It will surely get you killed. To him, if you die, He will simply take another human or some other god to take your place. All he wants is Amphitrite off the throne.”
It wasn’t as if you already didn’t guess that from Zeus. You already knew, deep down in an unsettling feeling in your stomach, that he considered you lesser than himself. No matter how kind he seemed to act to you.
Also it wasn’t as if you were trying to seduce Poseidon or become the next queen in anyways. Your main objective, as it always had been, was to protect and care for Triton.
You are brought back to reality as Scylla lets go of your hands and stands up, “Come. We don’t have much time.”
“Right.” Instantly, you follow the older woman as she makes her way across the room. You didn’t know where she could possibly be going but followed her anyway. “A frame?”
You look curiously at, what you guessed to be, the decorative frame of a mirror. You had no idea why you two have specifically stopped here. Was the frame important in some way, like some sort of secretive family heirloom?
However, you soon doubt that previous guess of yours as suddenly, as if bent by Scylla’s mind and will, the inside of the mirror starts to glow. It continued to glow as the light slowly trickled to the rest of the mirror and once it was fully completed, Scylla moves out of the way and gestures to it.
“You want me to walk up to it?” You ask Scylla as you make a small step to the blinding mirror. Slowly as you grow closer, you reach out your hand to slightly graze its surface. Only to realize it wasn’t a surface at all. “W-Woah!”
You are caught off guard as you are suddenly pulled into the mirror by a great force. Hissing, your eyes stung by the ever so bright light. What is happening? You thought Scylla was going to explain to you about the family history. Could she possibly have lied and tricked you?
Amphitrite… Daughter of Nereus and Doris…
“W-Who goes there?” You shout out, startled by the booming voice. “Were you the one who pulled me in here?”
However, as if the voice couldn’t hear you, it continues it’s speech and you are suddenly placed into a white blank room.
One of 50 sisters, known as the Nereids…Amphitrite grew up as any other goddess…
An ancient stone wall suddenly appears right in front of you. It’s drawings and paintings seeming to depict the beautiful Nereids.
…However, that was far from the truth…
All of sudden the paintings come to life, some of the Nereids were killing and even poisoning their sisters.
…All of those sisters were filled with greed… greed to be ever so powerful like their father and it only seemed to grow when it was announced that Poseidon would choose one to be his queen…
The stone changes once more, completely wiped clean except for one lone woman in the center. A shining crown placed on her head.
…And Amphitrite came out on top. With most of her sisters dead or banished by her, she was now the lone survivor to gain all the power she desired…as the new goddess and queen of the sea…
…However,…Poseidon wasn’t how she expected….
You are startled as the full white room, even the ground you were standing on, changes. The room now taking on an elegant bedroom. A grand circle bed was placed in the center of the room. With Pillows and silk blankets scattered around in it.
A sudden loud creak catches your attention and you spin your head around. Caught off guard at who was in front of you.
“What are you doing here?” Poseidon's voice booms out as he glares daggers at you. His form no longer dressed in his usual attire but instead one made for bed.
“I-I—“ “You can’t possibly expect nothing to happen on our wedding night.”
Taking a step away from Poseidon, you turn and realize he wasn’t talking nor glaring at you. Instead, his piercing gaze was directed at a woman sitting on the bed. A simple yet sexy nightgown covering her form.
You have never seen her before with her long and deep colored scarlet hair, with her sea green eyes and pale clear skin. But you could at least guess who she was.
“Amphitrite. Leave.” Poseidon orders, as he turns away from the woman to shrug off his shirt, “I won’t be asking again.”
The woman only giggles in response, seeming not to take Poseidon’s threat seriously as she makes her way up to the male.
“Oh god—“ You can’t help but let out. Quickly covering your eyes as you see Amphitrite loosen her strap of her nightgown, causing the article of clothing to fall to the floor. What was the woman thinking?!
Even with your heart practically beating out of your ears, you hear Poseidon let out a deep sigh and the loud sound of heavy footsteps making their way past you. From what you guess, this was a memory of the past and the two couldn’t see you.
“W-Where are you going—“ Amphitrite voice is cut off as the door is shut with a loud bang. It is quiet for a moment. Yet it was only a moment. As soon afterwards, the loud banging and breaking sounds ring out around the room as Amphitrite takes her anger out on the area around her. “That fucking piece of shit!! I’ll show you—“
Amphitrite voice is once again cut off. Yet this time not by Poseidon but instead the blinding light as the voice changes the scene. Deeming it safe, you uncover your eyes and take in the new scene around you. You were no longer in Poseidon’s bedroom but seemed to still be in the palace. This time the bed was a simple queen one, it’s sheets covered in blood that scared you for a moment. That is until another item gains your attention.
A baby crib.
Amphitrite was furious about how she couldn’t get Poseidon to bend to her will. She believed that he should be groveling at her feet and craving for her affections…
…This only got worse after she found out she was pregnant with an heir that Poseidon didn’t care for….
Startled by what the voice was saying, you take a step towards the baby crib. That means this crib was…
You let out an audible gasp as you lean over the crib. An ever so familiar pair of pale blue eyes staring up at you. It was baby Triton.
Damn, you wished you had your phone on you to take a picture of this moment. He was just all too adorable.
At the pregnancy of the child, Amphitrite left it in the hands of a nanny. Not wanting to bother with a child that will only hold her back.
“Lord Poseidon. I beg of you, Please do not hurt—”
“Silence.”
That voice… Hastily, you make your way across the room to the door that was slightly ajar. Standing outside was Poseidon, a couple of his attendees and Scylla. Scylla, who seemed to be back when she was a nymph, was on her hands and knees, begging something out of the god.
“Tch.” Poseidon lets out, seeming annoyed. You freeze as you see the male grab his trident and make his way towards the door.
“Lord Poseidon, Pleas— Ack!” As Scylla tries to bring her head up and grab onto Poseidon to stop him but before she could do so an attendee stomps on her back. Stopping her in her tracks.
“Do not come in.”
You back away as Poseidon makes his way into the room, shutting the door behind him. He wasn’t planning to…
You cover your ears as a loud screeching sound fills the room. It was coming from Poseidon’s trident as he drags the blade across the floor, Leaving long scratching indinents in the marble floor.
This is in the past, (y/n). You forcibly remind yourself as you watch Poseidon get closer to the crib. Triton is still alive, he’s not going to die here.
You freeze as the screeching sound stops and Poseidon lifts his trident. Uncovering your ears, you stare, mind boggled, at what happens next.
Poseidon… was whistling.
Was he attempting to soothe the baby before he killed it? What sort of Psycho was he—
“Ah! Stop!” You shout out as Poseidon’s trident comes barreling down towards the crib. He was going to actually kill—
Suddenly, Poseidon’s arm comes to a screeching halt.
“Bo ba ba booo.” Triton babbles away, seeming to attempt to imitate the song Poseidon had just whistled out.
.
..
“Tch.” Poseidon imbeds his trident in the marble before picking Trident up by the back of his onesie.
That’s not how you were supposed to carry a child! You could accidentally cause it to choke itself.
As you make your way closer to the two, worried about Triton’s safety, Poseidon once again whistles out. His gaze trained to the baby’s face.
“Boooo ba ba boo.” Triton lets out again, seeming to try his best to imitate Poseidon. Giggling slightly at the end as he reaches out towards his father and grabs a piece of Poseidon’s hair.
“You’re doing it wrong.” Poseidon mutters out as he brings his other hand up to Triton, the time adjusting his grip so that he was holding the baby by the armpits.
Poseidon whistles out once more. This time going slightly slower for the baby to listen.
Was this guy seriously attempting to teach a baby how to sing a song when he tried to kill it only seconds ago? Plus it was a baby for crying out loud.
“Hey! Get back here!”
The door comes flying open with a startling bang as Scylla trips her way into the room.
“I warned you!” Scylla screams out as the attendees' sword comes barreling down at her. However, thankfully, it never hits her. “L-Lord Poseidon-n…”
You cover your mouth as the attendee falls to the ground, his body separated in half by the trident Poseidon had just thrown.
“Silence.” Poseidon orders out to the rest of the attendees, who quickly release Scylla and back away. “You, Lady. Come here.”
“M-me?”
Scylla freezes as she sees the look Poseidon gives her. About how she should know better than to make him repeat himself. Frantically, she makes her way over to the two.
“What’s its name?” Poseidon asks Scylla. Who grows pale as she watches as Triton pulls at Poseidon’s hair. Yet, surprisingly, the god of the sea doesn’t flinch nor remove the annoyance, allowing the baby to continue what it was doing.
“I-uh. L-Lady Amphitrite never gave the child a name...”
Silence. You let out a small gulp as you anxiously take in the scene in front of you. Poseidon definitely wasn’t pleased with this development.
“Pardon me, M-My Lord. May I suggest something-g?” Scylla stutters out as she anxiously twiddles her thumbs. She seemed to be on the brink of collapsing from stress and anxiety.
“Speak.”
“Why…Why don’t you name the boy?”
Once again silence. However, it wasn’t as tense as the previous one. It seemed Poseidon was truly pondering Scylla’s suggestion.
“Triton.” Poseidon booms out. “His name will be Triton.”
“An E-Excellent choice, My Lord.” Scylla compliments. Yet, even though Poseidon accepted her suggestion, she didn’t seem pleased. “A-Another thing, My Lord. You aren’t supposed to hold a baby in that manner.”
“Huh?”
Quickly, Scylla attempts to cover her mistake, “I-I mean-n! You can hold the boy however you want. It just that isn't the most comfortable manner! You don’t have to listen to what I suggest. Please forgive me.”
You are surprised once more as Poseidon gives Scylla the baby. Seeming to tell her to show him how to hold Triton without wanting to ask. You have grown to notice that his pride seems to get in the way of things a lot of the time.
It eerily, in a way, reminded you of what happened last night when Poseidon listened to your own suggestion. Would he act in a fit of rage this time as well? Could this be how Scylla got—
“Bah!” Triton shouts out, startling you out of your thoughts. Currently, Poseidon was attempting to cradle Triton the way Scylla had shown him. The nanny fiddled with her fingers as she worriedly watched the two.
“Booo ba ba booo…. Boo boo boo boooo… boooo….” Triton babbles out, this time somewhat replicating the song accurately.
“Heh.”
Heh? You are startled at the sound Poseidon makes. Did he just laugh slightly?
Inching closer, you take in the look on Poseidon’s face as he looks down at Triton. As if his cold exterior had cracked ever so slightly, you could see a sliver of fondness in Poseidon’s cold blue eyes. A look that showed love for his newborn son.
…Yet, you thought Poseidon didn’t feel that way about Triton.
“My Lord.” Poseidon's fondness quickly disappears as he turns to look at Amphitrite who stood at the door. You could see an ever so slight smirk on her face. “I didn’t realize you wanted to visit our son. You should have told me, I would have come with you.”
Oh. Was it because…
“Zeus and Hera wanted to see the child.” Poseidon lies to Amphitrite as he gives the child back to Scylla. Seeming to believe her husband, Amphitrite's smile soon turns to a scowl.
“I see.” She bitterly spits out before walking away. Not wanting to stick around for any longer.
Once Amphitrite footsteps are no longer heard, Poseidon turns back to Scylla. Whispering in a low voice so that the attendees can’t hear.
“I’ll be back tomorrow. Same time. Don’t be late and don’t tell anyone.”
With that Poseidon walks away, his attendees quickly chasing after him. As Scylla seems happy with the new found development, hugging Triton tightly to her chest as she showers him in praises, you… didn’t know what to think.
You…
…Couldn’t wrap your head around why your chest aches so much when you watch the two.
…What in the world happened between Triton and Poseidon that changed them…?

Author Note: Just in case people didn’t see my notice about this yesterday. I decided to split Ch. 8 into two parts, due to it revealing a lot of things. So the second part will be up tomorrow (Friday). If there is any confusion, please feel free to ask or comment. I will be checking my tumble a lot today since I know this is a crazy chapter.
