Sigismund's Column, originally erected in 1644 in Castle Square Warsaw, is one of Warsaw's most famous landmarks. The column and statue commemorate King Sigismund III Vasa, who in 1596 had moved Poland's capital from Kraków to Warsaw. - Sigismund's Column now stands at 22 metres and is adorned by four eagles. The king is dressed in armor and carries a cross in one hand and wields a sword in the other. - It was renovated several times between 1644 and the latest on 1949 after the World War 2. On 1 September 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising, the monument's column was demolished by the Germans, and its bronze statue was badly damaged. After the war the statue was repaired, and it was set up on a new column a couple of metres taller from the original site. Warsaw's Castle Square is a historic square in front of the Royal Castle. It is a visitor's first view of the reconstructed Old Town, when approaching from the more modern center of Warsaw. It is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals. The Square (in a more or less triangular shape) features the landmark Sigismund's Column to the south-west, and is surrounded by historic townhouses. It marks the beginning of the Royal Route extending to the south. - On the east side of the square stands the Royal Castle reconstructed after the devastation of World War II. It was formerly the residence of the dukes of Mazovia, and then of the Polish kings and grand dukes of Lithuania from the 16th to 18th centuries.
