The Wawel Castle in Krakow is a complex with some stunning structures. The castle was built in the 13-14th centuries, but the site has been inhabited for more than 12,000 years. Mały Powstaniec 'The Little Insurgent' is a statue in honour of the brave young insurgents who fought heroically during the Warsaw Uprising for the independence of Warsaw in 1944. Plac Zamkowy or Castle Square in Warsaw is a wonderful area to spend time. Our first outing in Warsaw was to the beautiful Łazienki Park. St Mary' s Basilica in the main Market Square of Krakow was opened in 1347. One tower is 80m high and can be climbed for great views (we will show in our next post). A bugle call is played from the tower every hour, but cuts off part way through in honour of the trumpet player who was shot in tbe neck while warning the city of the invading mongols.
