🚗 Mastering Austin’s Steep Hills: Key Tips for New Drivers 🌄
Austin is a city full of surprises, and if you’ve driven around long enough, you know its steep hills can be a real challenge for new drivers. Whether you’re cruising down Westlake Drive or making your way up Mount Bonnell Road, knowing how to handle these steep inclines is a must. That’s why at Travis Driving School, we make sure our drivers ed students are equipped with the right techniques and confidence to navigate these tricky roads safely.
1. Stay in Control with Proper Braking
When you’re heading downhill, it’s all about maintaining control. Instead of riding the brakes the entire way, switch to a lower gear. This will help you avoid overheating your brakes and keep your car steady. Remember, slow and steady wins the race when it comes to Austin’s steep roads! 🛣️
2. Use the Right Gear Going Uphill
Climbing a steep hill? Don’t stress! Shift to a lower gear to give your engine the power it needs to make the climb smoothly. This technique is essential for protecting your car and avoiding stalling—something we cover in detail during our drivers ed lessons at Travis Driving School. 🚙⬆️
3. Parking on a Hill
Parking on an incline in Austin? Here’s a golden rule: Always turn your wheels toward the curb when parking downhill, and away from the curb when parking uphill. This ensures that your car won’t roll into traffic if your brakes fail. Plus, always engage the handbrake! 🅿️
4. Defensive Driving Is Key
Austin’s hills can lead to some blind spots, especially at intersections or when merging lanes. At Travis Driving School, we teach our students the importance of defensive driving. Being extra cautious, especially when visibility is low, can make all the difference in avoiding accidents. 👀🚦
5. Practice Makes Perfect
If you’re new to driving or just new to Austin, the best way to get comfortable with these hills is practice. The more experience you have tackling Austin’s steep roads, the more confident you’ll feel behind the wheel. At Travis Driving School, we take our students on real-world routes to ensure they’re ready for all of Austin’s unique driving challenges.
Navigating Austin’s steep hills might seem daunting at first, but with the right techniques and a little bit of practice, you'll become a pro in no time. 💪 Our drivers ed courses at Travis Driving School are designed to prepare you for the realities of driving in Austin, from handling steep hills to mastering downtown traffic. Ready to take on the challenge? Let’s hit the road together! 🚗✨

November 10 -- Love Is Stored In The Garlic
tw: mentions of almost drowning but i promise it's brief
John is a small and sickly baby who grows into a small and sickly child. Plagued with croup and whooping cough and tonsillitis and a myriad of ailments that see him spending days, sometimes even weeks in bed. Lucinda can’t explain it. But she knows, when the call comes in from the sands of Steephill Cove, that a near-drowning won’t help.
They airlift her boy to the mainland, to the specialist hospital, and after a little while they return him to her care. She’s instructed to rest him, and feed him well. Though Lucinda isn’t the best cook – as with most women of her breeding – there are some things she knows. Her grandmother was French; worse, she was Breton. No one was allowed to escape a little light cooking.
She starts with things that are hearty. Things that will line his water-logged chest and warm him from the inside out. She instructs Cook to save the bones from the Sunday roast and she simmers them over a low heat for hours, the scent of the bone broth filling the kitchen, filtering up into the dining room above. It trails behind her as she carries the bowl on a silver tray, which shakes whenever she turns a corner or mounts a step, not used to the weight of it. Some of the broth slops out of the bowl, droplets of fat-flecked liquid like reflecting pools on the polished silver. It’s all for nothing anyways; she manages to get a meager three spoonfuls into her son’s reluctant mouth before he turns green and hides his face beneath the covers.
She tries for tomato soup instead, making sure the tomatoes the gardener picks are the ripest, the reddest, the roundest. She blends them all, red speckles in her pale hair, and adds as much cream as she can before she repeats the same pilgrimage as before. Again, not that it does any good. The bowl of sunset orange is left on the side to cool, and then to sour, before the maids whisk it away.
Lucinda wonders if she’ll have more luck with something sweet. She opts for warm rice pudding, made with fresh jersey milk, from the cows that graze down by the coast. She has to shoo Cook away as she stands for nearly an hour, stirring and stirring, the milky steam curling the hair that frames her face. When the rice is soft she adds a dollop of summer raspberry jam, mixing it until the pudding is a muted pink. This she has more success with: they manage half a bowl before he gives up entirely.
Thus begins the campaign of sweets. She takes out the pastry Cook had prepared for the supper – not stealing, of course, because she owns everything in the kitchen, from the herbs dangling from the rafters to the mice that hunt for crumbs behind the cabinets – and cuts it into ribbons, turning them into crisp Palmiers dusted with thick sugar crystals. She has Cook make the batter so that she can stand at the hotplate and make crepes, telling her eldest son to run along before he burns his fingers trying to steal them away. She slathers them with blackberry jam as the seasons change, slices of plum stacked on top.
Over the winter, his appetite returns. She makes him hot chocolates at christmas, piled high with cream and marshmallows and so much sugar it’s a wonder he isn’t crawling the walls. She brings him breakfast, runny eggs with toast soldiers for dipping, and she resists the urge to grin when he grabs for them with gusto, splattering rich orange yolk on the bedspread. She doesn’t know if it’s because she makes it, but she likes to think so – she delights in the look on his face when she knocks on his door, silver tray in hand, no longer shaking with effort.
By the time his birthday arrives he’s almost back to normal: she arranges a picnic, up on the cliffs. It’s warmer and drier than April usually is, and Lucinda is glad. Her son’s skin is sickly pale from almost a year spent indoors, blue veins like rivers on a roadmap. She’s made the food specially: apricot jam sandwiches, cut horizontally, not diagonally, the crusts removed. Empire biscuits, inexpertly iced, half-glace cherries haphazardly thrown on top. And a birthday cake, crooked and drooping on one side, the icing a paler blue than she had imagined no matter how much food colouring she had mixed in. It doesn’t matter anyways; they go home with an empty picnic basket, smudges of pastel icing on the sides of the tupperware the only remnants of a homemade feast.

I've just finished this painting that I started last month, it's a view looking down towards 'Steephill Cove' a favourite spot of mine in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. This painting was inspired by a photo I took one late afternoon around the beginning of February a couple of years ago, we'd been out walking our dog and as I walked back up the hill I turned around and saw the sun's rays poking through the clouds, I've been meaning to paint this scene ever since. I've used watercolour paint and then added some pastel over the top in a few areas. If you are interested in buying this painting I've decided to add it to my Etsy shop, it's called 'Steephill Sunburst' the link is in my bio. Thanks for reading! #steephillcoveisleofwight #steephillcove #sunburst #steephillsunburst #colourful #kaleidoscopic #concoctionofcolour #sunset #coastalpainting #thelighthouse #isleofwightartist #isleofwightart #artworkforsale (at Isle of Wight) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpM-TiMoCX4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

As a matter of comparison, the two shots above show the angle of the slope, the first shows the horizon aligned with house, and the second aligned with the slope. Quite dramatic!

I seem to be obsessed with three things at the moment, watercolour painting, dramatic skies and Steephill Cove, so I'm sorry but here's more Steephill Cove paintings! I have been having fun messing about with watercolour again this month and I've fallen in love with it all over again. I love the unpredictability of it and how the paint can blend and merge to create these wonderful kaleidoscopic concoctions of colour. I've noticed I'm drawn to big, dramatic skies too, I just love the feeling I get when I look at them, the serenity, the delight and escapism. So I've been combining these three loves and this is what has resulted so far this month. I was also interested to see if there was a specific name for people who like dramatic skies and I was intrigued to find a whole host of names for various things. Did you know that a person who loves skies is called an 'Astrophile'? Though I think this refers more to a person who loves stars and astronomy, here's a list of a few more if you are interested: Ceraunophile: a person who loves thunder and lightning Chionophile: a person who loves cold weather, snow Heliophile: a lover of the sun Selenophile: a person who loves the moon Nyctophile: a person who loves night or darkness Photophile: a person who loves light Pluviophile: a lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days Nephophile: a person who loves clouds; has fondness or obsession of clouds Logophile: a lover of words Opacarophile: a lover of sunsets Dendrophile: a lover of trees Melophile: a lover of music I've come to the conclusion that I am a lover of a lot of these things but I've decided to create my own word for someone who likes dramatic skies (as there doesn't appear to be one) 'Heavenophile'! Which one are you and how does it make you feel? Or which one would you be if you could make one up and why? #watercolourpaintings #watercolourpaintings🎨 #kaleidoscopicconcoctionsofcolour #steephillcoveiow #steephillcove #isleofwightartist #astrophile #ceraunophile⚡️ #chionophile❄️ #heliophile #selenophile🌛 #nyctophile #photophile #pluviophile☔️ #nephophile☁️ #logophile #opacarophile #dendrophile🌴❤️ #melophile🎶 (at Isle of Wight) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoFa9uCIbp8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
