Di Full Name: Diamonte ‘Di’ Vizioso Age: 31 Gender, Sexuality, Pronouns: Cis Male, Gay, he/him Species: Sea Serpent Occupation: Pirate Appearance: Ig just normal Di but with scales and gills and fins and a tail Backstory: Diamonte was born into a family of pirates. As the son of Captain Vizioso, Di became used to committing crimes for his father. On a matchmaking mission, Anton took Baxter with him to Thalassa territory. A match was indeed found. Baxter and a pirate. When this was realised, Baxter ended up heading into the pirate ship to find his so-called match. Di and the other pirates were trying to attack Baxter, but he didn’t stop. His determination impressed Di, and he eventually stopped the attack. They’ve been dating since. Extra Facts: - He’s got a bunch of step-siblings, most of which are sea serpent and something else hybrids, he’s one of the few pure blood sea serpents in the crew - He has a full sea serpent form and a humanised one, like his whole species - Really loves music, has a great instruments on the ship

Shinigami Full Name: Kurotsuki Shinigami Age: 14 Gender, Sexuality, Pronouns: Cis Female, Lesbian, she/her Species: Idk, whatever witches are considered Occupation: Witch/Student Appearance: Canon 2012 shini is she was slightly younger Backstory: Shinigami was raised in the ways of witches since the day she was born. She met Karai at school, and very quickly developed a crush on her. Karai doesn’t feel the same way (actually she does, she just doesn’t realise it), but Shini still enjoys spending time with her. She enjoys witch craft, but is also learning voodoo. Extra Facts: - Last name means ‘black moon’ - Has a pet black cat named Sumi - Owns a shit ton of magical artefacts, she gave one to Karai that lets her turn into a snake

Alopex Full Name: Chouriki ‘Alopex’ Hisayo Age: 300+ (immortal) Gender, Sexuality, Pronouns: Cis Female, Bisexual, she/her Species: Anthropomorphic Arctic Fox Occupation: Foot Lieutenant Appearance: IDW alopex with purple stripes around her arms, metal tipped claws, a Foot Clan symbol tattooed on her hand, and orange piercings on her left ear Backstory: Hisayo and Takeshi were once inseparable. All to took was one night to tear everything apart. TC was exploring the Foot Clan barrier, studying the clan, its history, and the barrier itself. But he was getting too close to ruining their plans. A member of the clan, disguised as TC, attacked Hisayo. They wanted to turn her against TC, and it worked. She came back to their home bloodied and bruised, believing TC attacked her. When she saw them, she attacked. They soon split up and she headed in the direction of the barrier (albeit unintentional). Hisayo, Alopex now, works as the clan’s loyal Lieutenant. Extra Facts: - She’s a bigger character later on, at first she’s basically nonexistent - She can store weapons and other items in her tail like it’s a bottomless bag - She’s ofc super fast, but also has kick/jinx manipulation

Dr. Orielle Full Name: Dr. Orielle Aurum Age: 32 Gender, Sexuality, Pronouns: Cis Female, Pansexual, she/they Species: Harpy Occupation: Scientist Appearance: Dark skin, curly black hair in a bun, orange eyes, brown wings, brown feather tail, talons, wears her lab coat most of the time Backstory: Orielle was a child prodigy. So naturally, the next step in life was science. In a world full of magic, she always believed science could be just as important and fascinating. But often times, her experiments aren’t very…ethical. But Orielle doesn’t think that what she’s doing is immoral, it’s all in the name of science for her. She’s a coworker of Baxter’s and is way in love with him. Like yandere style. He’s oblivious though. Extra Facts: - She hasn’t met Di yet, but when she does, she’s going to try even harder to get with Baxter - Orielle and Aurum both mean gold or golden - She has a pet that she created from a mix of a shit ton of creatures like a Frankenstein

Lilly Full Name: Princess Lilliana Polilla Age: 26 Gender, Sexuality, Pronouns: Demigirl, Aroace, she/they Species: White Witch Moth Occupation: Princess of the House of Polilla/Witch Appearance: Anthropomorphic white witch moth, white eyes, eyes on wings, extremely long hair, black markings on face Backstory: Born into the princess lifestyle, Lilly knew what it was like to have authority. Unlike many other royals from many generations, she used it fairly. She and a prince from the House of Azyrath are scheduled to be married, and while neither have met, they’re both opposed. The intention is that her calm demeanour will be able to help Chris’s angry, arrogant one. Extra Facts: - Even though they’re supposed to get married, she’s never met Chris - She’s an artist, but doesn’t make that fact very public - She’s a green witch so does stuff like botany, herbs, and nature

Carina Full Name: Princess Carina Amros Age: 29 Gender, Sexuality, Pronouns: Cis Female, Straight, she/her Species: Cupid Occupation: Princess of the House of Amros Appearance: Pale skin, purple eyes, curly silver hair, white heart pupils, white pink and gold wings, white pink and gold halo with little hearts around it Backstory: Cupids are tasked with matchmaking jobs, and as their princess, Carina gets the final say on these missions. Like most other cupids, she deems love as between a man and a woman. She thinks she’s great at romance but she can’t score anyone for the life of her. She’s been hearing reports of a Cupid who’s making matches between people of the same gender (Anton), and ahe’s made it very clear that that person will be found and face consequences. Extra Facts: - She tries to be a good leader but when it comes to romance she’s such an arrogant douche - Since she’s a princess her wings are bigger and can be used fly better than normal cupids - Her aim with a bow and arrow is perfect

Almost every night he sneaks out of the castle to explore the seas, and when he has a meeting to attend to, he likes exploring land too. On one meeting, he met Lilly, and they’ve been best friends ever since. Extra Facts: - Most siraelia don’t have a terrain form, only the royals and any exiles do, but exiles like Xever are kinda cursed with that form, the really hate being so human - There’s a lot of pearls in his clothing and jewellery - Keeps a bunch of journals, has one for each of the Houses’ territories

"Bow.” Apollo held his head high, his chest heaved slowly. “I told you to bow”, his guard hissed. A sharp pain lanced through his head. His vision went blurry. Belle watched him fall. Drops of blood trickled from his broken nose. He spit at the queen’s feet. “Apollo Caspian Galene.” Her voice echoed in the chamber. Apollo flashed her a bloody grin. “That’s my name, your highness.” The queen regarded him with contempt and boredom. “What has he done? Why shan’t the Council deal with his shit?” The queen was regally beautiful if you allow me a singular pun, her long hair fell in electric blue waves down her back and her were dark blue resembling a never ending night sky. Her skin was dark brown.“He is sort of a special gaze”, Apollo heard his guard’s rumbling voice again. “If I’m such a special case, why not show me your bloody face?” he asked. Belle smiled secretly. The guard sighed and at last removed his hood. Apollo watched it fall down and reveal a familiar tanned face. Shaggy, dirty blonde hair framed it. Apollo saw the light freckles that he remembered thinking resembled sunlight. He saw the dark green, sharp eyes. “Thalassa”, a whisper escaped him before he could stop it. Of course Belle knew who the guards were. It had taken years but she knew everything about the royal court. Thalassa’s eyes remained on the queen. “He has betrayed our beloved shore.” Apollo laughed. “Our beloved shore. Sorry, Thal, do keep going.”

“How badly do you need to be beat up until you’re forced into total submission?” the other guard snapped. He had a crossbow with one of the arrows directed to Apollo’s back. This guard was clearly female. She shook back her hood. Her hair was short and orange. Very choppily cut. Her eyes were muddy brown. Apollo had no idea who this was. Belle of course knew. “Daughters”, the queen shouted. Two young women appeared from thin air. “Yes, mother?” the older one inquired in a strained tone of voice. With her head held high she averted everyone’s gazes. She bore no clear resemblance to the queen, only her skin colour, her stance and the expressions on her face. Her hair was very neat and the colour of lavender. Her eyes shone in the way sapphires do. “Sorine, take his marks.” Sorine blanched. “Very well, mother.”

“Really?” Apollo showed no fear. Only his tensed up shoulders indicated he had been affected by the queen’s words. “You won’t find out what I’ve done?”

“Your deeds must be horrible to face an exile”, Sorine said, voice full of contempt. “Guards, reveal his arms.” Thalassos and the other guard ripped Apollo’s sleeves to reveal pale, skinny arms filled with black swirls and curlicues. The magic of his runes had seeped into his blood over the years. His veins stood out as dark lines. “Go ahead then”, Apollo said, licking his dry lips. Sorine was forced to face him. “Apollo Caspian Galene, you shall be stripped of your runes and the magic they brought to you. You can never return to Mystery Shore. If you do, you’ll face a terrible punishment.” Sorine’s voice was clear and bright. It only shook slightly. “Great.” Apollo’s voice was bored but Sorine detected fear from it. She gripped his arms tightly. She felt his rhythmic pulse underneath her fingertips and imagined the runemagic slowly seeping away. Black flames licked Apollo’s arms. Sorine felt his pulse quicken. She knew her eyes black now. She shut them in concentration. And she was back in the strange emptiness. Will-o-wisps glowed around her. Cold crept up her back and down her arms. She bit her tongue, tasted the metal and returned to the chamber. A shudder travelled through her body. Apollo’s knees had buckled. Sorine tightened her grip. “He’s not worthy”, she muttered. “He’s not worthy.” Ghosts circled Apollo, hazy, sad spirits. They gripped his arms as well. Sorine felt their touch on her as well. A surge of energy swept through the room. Then the spirits were gone. Sorine was slightly out of breath as she let go of Apollo. The runes had vanished. “Moriko”, the queen said. “Bring the flower.” Moriko stepped forward holding a brightly coloured marigold. Moriko’s hair was slightly shorter than her sister’s and darker purple. Her eyes were forest green. She knelt down. “Smell it.” Apollo’s vision was blurry. He ached all over. “What will it do?” he croaked. “It will put you to sleep.” Moriko’s voice was gentler and kinder than Sorine’s. “You shall be taken to Echo Valley in your sleep. It shall be easier than getting you there awake.” Apollo inhaled the flower’s sweet smell. His eyelids grew heavy and he collapsed to the hard marble floor. “I’m sorry, Ariana”, he whispered. “I really do love you.”

Thalassa watched Apollo being dragged away. “We should make him an example so no one else would be foolish enough to betray our kingdom.” He’s sold his soul to the queen, Belle thought. “I agree”, she said simply. “He was foolish. No loyalty for the queen.” She clicked her tongue. “What do you suggest we do?” Thalassos smiled. It unnerved Belle slightly. “Nothing yet. I have no suggestions that the queen would like but if you ask me, everyone should receive a rune. Travelling to other realms is useless when we live in a perfect one.” Belle didn’t say anything. She had come from the human world. Without portals it wouldn’t have worked out. But she wasn’t about to tell this to Thalassa.

Blooms in the Caspian Sea

Given adequate sunlight and nutrients, phytoplankton populations can swell into blooms large enough to be visible from space. On August 3, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image of several blooms in the Caspian Sea.

Phytoplankton blooms are often harmless, and are an important food source for marine life. Other times, blooms can be harmful; they can deplete the water’s oxygen and suffocate marine life, and produce toxins that can be harmful to both aquatic creatures and humans.

Lake Urmia is visible west of the Caspian Sea. Microscopic organisms periodically turn the lake’s salty water striking shades of red and orange.
