Revisited this old casein painting of the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego, adding some animated water via After Effects. Liking the result! I may do a little tutorial on how I got this effect, because I discovered a couple new techniques in the process.

Saype, born Guillaume Legros, is a French artist living in Bulle, Switzerland. A self-taught artist, Saype’s giant biodegradable artworks adorn fields, are best seen by drones and last only days. The artist is represented by MTArt Agency since 2018. Beginning his career as a young graffiti artist, Saype’s work quickly gained recognition and became highly sought after, resulting in him landing his first gallery exhibition at age 16. Saype is a pioneer of the land art movement, focusing upon large scale biodegradable paintings with strong social messages.
Using 100% biodegradable paint composed of water, chalk, coal and casein, Saype’s ephemeral land artwork disappears after a month due to regrowth of the grass it is painted upon, the weather and the passage of visitors. With each project he completes, his recognition grows, capturing the attention of those on social media as well as landing extensive global media coverage. Career highlight for Saype have included gaining thanks from the Swiss President, Doris Leuthard, for the social vision of his art, in 2017, and following that in 2018, the publication of his book, ‘Green Art’, which highlights the innovative qualities of the biodegradable paint Saype has created.

Some places that I get craft/fabric supplies that aren’t Joann’s:
- Thrifting. Always hit or miss, but you never know what you might find. Usually the fabrics are mostly synthetics with a few cottons thrown in, but once I found three yards of iridescent jacquard pure silk for like $4.
- Local art supply stores. May be harder to find if you don’t live in a city. Usually don’t have fabric, but good for specialist fine art supplies that stores like Michael’s can’t accommodate.
- Local yarn stores. Similar to art supply stores but for specialty yarn, especially if you’re looking for natural fibers.
- Estate sales! I’ve found so many cool things at estate sales that I actively think about dying one day and hoping that I leave the same kind of estate I’d be thrilled to shop through. Yesterday I bought a ton of oil paint supplies for $30 at an estate sale, and that was me holding myself back. There was also gouache, acrylic, casein, watercolor, tons more brushes, pens, charcoal, blenders, ink, fabric, yarn— the woman who accumulated all of that stuff was clearly quite a multitalented artist.
- Antique stores are the dark horse of sewing supplies. Please please please go to an antique store. They’re great for trimming, lace, and buttons especially, but they also often have fabric. I’ve found some of the most interesting vintage cottons and nicest wools at antique stores. Oh, and patterns! They often have tons of vintage patterns. I once found an original pattern from the 1920s.
- Buying online.
Sites I usually order online for fabric/sewing supplies, especially for historical sewing:
- William Booth & Draper (great for cottons/linens)
- Renaissance Fabrics (great for wools and silks, wider variety of fabrics overall)
- Burnley and Trowbridge (lots of ribbon and thread options)
- Stonemountain & Daughter (not specifically a store for historical costuming, but great selection of natural fabrics)
- Puresilks is great for, you guessed it, silks
Sites I look for art supplies:
- Blick (wide selection for professional/specialist needs)
- Jerry’s Artarama (similar, great selection)
- Artist and Craftsman Supply (smaller selection, but still useful)
Sites where I look for yarn:
- lovecrafts (wide selection of brands and yarns)
- knitting for olive
- premier yarns
- lionbrand
It may take some trial and error to find what sources you like best or have the most luck with, but that’s part of the fun. Go forth and craft!

Marcia Hafif Wall Paintings: “After hanging the monochrome paintings together on walls in a traditional manner I chose to make independent paintings each related to the wall alone. One painting in casein covered a 35 x 10 foot wall, another on canvas was longer than the wall as it was divided in three parts, still others fit the space floor to ceiling. In addition each presented a different medium or technique: casein, oil, encaustic, glaze, egg tempera.”; 1. Wall Painting: Prussian Blue, Julian Pretto Gallery, 1975, 2. Wall Painting: Red and Green, MoCA Chicago, 1977, 3. Wall Painting: Grayed Cobalt Blue, Sonnabend Gallery, NY, 1975, 4. Wall Paintings: Red Ochre, Strontium Yellow Chromate, Sonnabend Gallery, Paris, 1975

Kastral the Windcrested, Glarb-Calmity’s Augur, and GenCon 2023 (pt 2)
Time to pick up the story where I'd left off...
It was good to be home where I could resume working in my studio.
The art director approved the drawings and selected their preferred color studies.

(she selected Kastral #3 and Glarb #2).
I jumped onto Kastral first.
I'd drawn both cards digitally while at GenCon using my iPad and Procreate. I printed the drawing of Kastral at about 20% on a 140 lb Cold Press Arches watercolor paper. I taped the paper to my drawing board.

I wanted the tunnel of clouds to feel like a watercolor wash, so I painted the background first, using gouache.

With the bg painted, I proceeded to rework and refine the drawing of Kastral with a Caran D'ache brown colored pencil.

Using Casein, I painted a Raw Umber value underpainting, capturing the values, lights, and darks, on Kastral.

Once I was satisfied with the underpainting, I began to lay in the color, continuing with Casein.

The art director asked for a little more of a golden brown tinge highlighting the light side of the character.

And Kastral was complete!
Stay tuned for Glarb, coming up soon!
