After leaving Covington, maybe subconsciously, every single place that Jameson found himself was a major city, each time getting progressively further and further away. Almost as if he desperately wished to be unknown and unrecognizable, he clung to populous cities that afforded him complete anonymity. First Atlanta, which was still close enough to home and attracted enough Covingtonians ( including his own family ) that he got a slight taste of freedom but nothing to satisfy him fully. Durham to Chicago to Houston, each subsequent move pulled him further away from the grip of the Carter family and closer towards that coveted namelessness. And he basked in walking around the streets of each of these cities, not running into either a family member, a friend, or someone else who could immediately report his whereabouts back to his parents. It wasn’t as if either Cassidy or Emmett Carter kept tabs on him, but word had a way of traveling back to them through the extensive grapevine, an inevitable byproduct of a massive extended family residing in a very small town.

It was for this reason that returning back home after years of running into absolutely no one he knew, Jameson expected to see familiar faces. Callie, however, was one face that he did not expect to run into after so many years. Many of his childhood friends and certainly his entire family had either never left or promptly returned to Covington. But she was not from here. She was from the glamorous shores of California, a place that he’d pestered her with questions about when he was younger and more of a dreamer. As he walked through the corridors of the now familiar office, he stopped at the door of their well respected and highly successful district attorney, the door ajar. “Knock, knock,” he said as he rapped on the wooden perimeter lining the glass insert. “I figured going out for lunch wasn’t possible, given that your assistant told me, and I quote ‘she has about fifteen seconds to spare at 12:39 p.m., if you want to try your luck.’” Leaning against the doorframe, he held up the bags of takeout. “So hopefully, you’re a fan of Lucille’s sandwiches.”

Today, Zahid was working outside the studio. He had been at the elementary school covering a story on the new healthy meal initiatives being implemented in the school cafeterias. As part of a district-wide effort to provide more nutritious food options, the elementary school had recently transitioned to serving fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. When the team was packing up, he nearly ran into a familiar face. 

"No way… Tell me I’m not actually standing in front of the Dior," he said, blinking his eyes in exaggeration. "How's my favorite rockstar? And most importantly, what are you doing in Covington?” Of all the places he could run into her again, he didn’t think it would be in Covington, but stranger things have happened. Truthfully, he was pleased to see a recognizable face in this town. The more the merrier. His gaze swept over her appreciatively. "I have to say, Covington just got a whole lot more interesting with you here. We should get together and catch up sometime. I'd love to hear all about what you've been up to lately." He said with a playful wink.

2000, Dawson's Creek: Berlanti says “I had to threaten to quit, basically because they wouldn’t let us have the characters kiss,”. WB also asked them to film it from across the street.

2001, Buffy The Vampire Slayer: co-ep David Greenwalt, once recalled that he received a phone call from an anonymous WB exec asking "Is [Joss] really going to do this gay thing?". They were asked to cut Willow and Tara's kiss, and Whedon 'declared he would walk away from the show' if they didn't get their kiss.

2005, The OC: network affiliates said they were getting complaints about the bi Marissa storyline, and they went to the network saying, ‘If this doesn’t go away, we’re not going to air your show anymore.’. “I’ll never forget when we were forced to cut their first kiss way back before it aired. [...] I’m like, ‘What are we doing? Why are they doing that? They just made us cut this thing down to like a tiny little smooch,’” Schwartz recalled.

2000-2007, Gilmore Girls: Sherman-Palladino: "The networks were very different in how permissive they would allow you to be. So, Sookie was originally supposed to be gay, but that was a non-starter at that time."

2007-2012, Gossip Girl: “There was not a lot of representation the first time around on the show.” Safran said [...], adding: “I was the only gay writer I think the entire time I was there.” / ''Sure, Eric Van Der Woodsen came out in the 1st season -- he also triumphantly outed his boyfriend, which tells you a lot about where we were in 2007''.

2010, 90210: Q: 90210 doesn’t shy away from allowing its straight characters to express their sexuality. Will the show be as frank in its depiction of Teddy’s romantic relationships? Sinclair [EP]: I hope so.

27 LGBTQ+ characters were killed off in 2016 across various networks and shows.

Carter Covington (Faking It, 2014-2016) said in 2016: “Networks are terrified. They’re completely scared right now. They will look for any reason not to do something. …I would hate for us to lose opportunities because of fear.”

Javier Grillo-Marxuach [...] explained [he] doesn’t own the properties for which he is telling stories. “I don’t make promises I can’t keep,” he said. “I will not stand up in front of the world and promise to do this and then somehow become the scapegoat on something that is not my property.”

Extra not-related-but-kinda-related fact: 1999 - Felicity's Haircut: network executives suggested it could have been series star Keri Russell's drastic haircut that did the real ratings damage. According to entertainment president Susanne Daniels, [...] she provoked a reaction so "overwhelmingly negative" that audiences stopped tuning in. Rather than chiding viewers for their superficiality, Daniels promised Russell would regrow her mane. "Nobody is cutting her hair again on our network," she said.

Sometime around 2021-22, the 9-1-1 team starts seriously working up to expand their roster of queer characters (originally including two black women, two black men and a white man) by exploring Buck's bisexuality... but Fox hits the brakes and ends up cancelling the show. Fortunately ABC (owned by the same production company) picked it up and that storyline got the go ahead *.

* Note: It should be said that by the time Buck's bisexuality was greenlit, the m/m black couple had left the show.

Now, The CW. Know Riverdale? that show where every plot point or detail that crosses your dash makes it seem even more bonkers, and whose fans are quick to tell you that actually it's even weirder? romantic entanglements included?

So there's a recurring gay character, and then the main cast (which includes Cheryl, who is a lesbian). Who kisses who? Cheryl and Topaz? YES. Cheryl and Veronica? YES. Cheryl and Betty? YES. Betty and Veronica? YES. Archie and Betty? YES. Archie and Veronica? YES. Jughead and Betty? YES. Jughead and Veronica? YES.

Archie and Jughead? NO.

My main points:

Queer storylines are still not easily greenlit, especially for pre-existing characters (don't take risks. don't fix it if it ain't broken). It's getting easier, but it's still not easy.

White, male, and straight is still seen as the default and as neutral by the networks, and let's admit it, by a portion of the audience. So while they might be willing to include some diversity in their shows, I think these characters are still seen as 'other', and there's a strong reluctance to taking one of those 'neutral characters everyone can identify with' and... 'officially/openly queering them', so to speak.

And what about Supernatural? The show that Pedowitz was happy brought on some very wanted male viewers, and which they used to usher in new shows:

“It has been the lead-in or lead-out to almost the entire schedule,” Pedowitz said. “It’s made successes out of shows that might not have [otherwise] been sampled, and a lot of it has to do with the fact that Supernatural brought in an audience that demographically was 50-50, male to female.[...]"

The show that got this network note in season 1 (2005):

For the episode "Route 666" though, "… The note I got from the network was 'The girl can't be on top.'"

"[straight pairing were] never endgame in the very early days. It was never even a thing. It’s that beautiful thing that comes out of creating a show and getting to 62 chapters of a story and all of a sudden it kind of takes you somewhere."

Michelle was neither a musician, nor a poet. She was but an actress. One who learned that while her voice could not carry a note, it could impart emotion. Where she had spend her childhood on stage, she had also taken to interpretive reading. These days, that was called poetry. She did not have a way with words. She could not string together sentences to evoke emotion. What she could do was perform. Breathing life into the words on a page had been her passion since she had first auditioned in middle school. The one thing that she had a natural talent for. Musicians, they did the same. She saw it with Nesli. The way she artfully strung lyrics together while strumming just the right chords to resonate with her audience. Tonight, sitting on the stage and reading aloud a few works that had touched Michelle, she wondered how powerful it must be to have the ability to move with words.

As she continued her delivery, she reflected on her return. It had only been a few weeks, but the past year had been marked by failure after failure. She’d lost touch with what it meant to fall over the past decade. Forgotten what it was like before Connor. Which was precisely what he wanted her to feel. She shuffled off stage and to the bar in the back once she’d finished reciting a poem that was not hers in name. While she was no longer featured on the big screen, this evening allowed her to stay connected to the part of her that was an artist in her own respect. Seated beside her in the back was Dior. Someone that she’d seen on occasion when she visited Covington in the past and swung by this very venue to reminisce about her high school years when Michelle had performed poetry at open mics. “Hey,” she began with a tentative smile. “Are you performing tonight?”

Details: 

The character's background and personality are absolutely up to you as I don't really have anything in stone about him but these two would go way back, probably the last few years of high school. I like to think that they were very serious about each other when they were younger but the relationship has always been very intense and passionate with a lot of ups and downs and it has been going on throughout the years.

Think 'Normal People' or 'One Day' type of relationships where they are in a never-ending cycle of trying to make things work, but they also see other people in the meantime, go back and forth on what they want for their future and continuously struggle to find a way to either make it work or to remain in the same place at the same time.

The only specific thing I do have for them is that at some point in their mid-twenties, Dior moved to NYC to live with your character and she returned to Covington after only six months because of the break up. In my head, he's stayed out of Covington for the better part of the last few years, but ideally he'd come back often for whatever reasons you want to give him. 

This could lead to them getting back together or it could be them making their way to friends as I do think that in a way they have supported each other through everything even when broken up. Right now, Dior's family is going through a lot and given their connection I see a lot of potential for him to be back in town and to re-connect or to finally decide what they should do about whatever is going on between them. But we can definitely decide all of that together.

It was a beautiful spring day in Covington, not too hot or cold—perfect for an after school outing. Roman walked hand-in-hand with Ivy into Bread & Butter, his eyes on the pastry display as he contemplated which treats to get. In hindsight he should have paid more attention on Ivy because before he could even blink, she’d pulled away from him and ran towards a woman across the bakery. His heart jumped, ready to panic for a moment, until he realized it was only Dior——Ivy's music teacher. His daughter adored the woman. 

"Miss Dior!" Ivy cried, rushing over to hug the woman's legs. 

He chuckled in amusement and relief, then walked over to join them. "Sorry about that, Dior. I've told her a million times not to run off, but you know how she gets too excited. Clearly, she still needs to learn to listen." He looked down at Ivy with a playfully stern smile, unable to truly be upset with his sweet girl. "We came to get some treats. She loves the scones they make here. I can barely get her out of the bakery without buying at least two."

It was not uncommon for Jameson to have guests over his home at Orchird Park. In fact, despite living alone, more often than not, his house was bustling with activity of cousins, children, and other extended family. It was what kept his fridge stocked with all the food he could possibly need and it was what ensured that he never felt the suffocating silence of returning to an empty home. He’d felt that for years during his marriage. Dinners filled with only the sound of silverware hitting glass. Nights where he would find her already asleep when he came back from work. Weeks where they barely spoke more than few sentences to each other. Though he never admitted it to himself at the time, most days, Jameson dreaded coming home. It was suffocating in a way that he never imagined silence could be. For a man that craved the escape throughout his entire life, he returned to Covington and to the boisterous Carter family with a renewed appreciation for loud. Tonight however, the family was no where to be seen. Instead, throwing a glance over his shoulder every minute to where Asher, strapped into a highchair, was playing with his dinner, Jameson continued putting together the meal for him and his childhood friend. “We are in here,” he called out as he heard the door open, as if it was not obvious given the sounds and smells of of cooking.

Ahalya pressed one fingers to her lips. “That’s a secret I’ll never tell,” she did her best to put on the infamous voice from one of her favorite shows growing up. When she thought about the glitz and glamour associated with New York and fantasized about what it might be like to move. She never did, of course. Because when push came to shove, Ahalya never seemed to have the courage to really leave Covington. Nor did she think she needed to. Dior, on the other hand, had. They’d known each other for a while and when Ahalya learned that she planned to move to the Big Apple, it had surprised her. In a lot of ways, Dior felt more grounded in Covington than even Ahalya was. She went to school just as close by and her family attachments were just as strong. If there was one person that Ahalya had always imagined staying in their hometown, it was Dior. And yet even she had ventured beyond the perimeter of Covington, getting a taste for the world beyond. Though, the fact that Dior stood before her now might have indicated that the grass was not greener on the other side.

Selfishly, Ahalya was grateful when she had returned. And not only because she’d been an unexpected source of comfort and inspiration for the artist over the past few years. “Honestly, it’s magical. It’s incredible to be surrounded by so much positivity and happiness all the time. It’s been doing wonders for my creativity actually. And the live painting has been so rewarding.” It was why she couldn’t complain about the work. Because while it was a lot to balance both her responsibilities at the store with her desire to get back into her art, they were both fulfilling in their own respects. And they were both giving her life the sense of purpose that she’d desperately craved. “Um, Ms. Dior Cartier,” the nickname was one she had given Dior years ago, when Ahalya announced this was the closest she would get to the two luxury brands. Linking her arm through the other’s, Ahalya continued. “You don’t know me if you think I don’t already have planned our own little after party. And you also don’t know me if you don’t think I will be requesting a copy of that wedding video so I can show you off to all these wedding planners. "Wow, she is my favorite. Who's giving you all this intel? I need to talk to my manager about these sources." Dior mused with the widest smile in her face. She loved that Ahalya was so supportive, it felt like they understood each other in so many ways and she was incredibly important to Dior. No matter how busy they were, they would show up for one another. Even if Dior had hundreds of shows in a year, every time that Ahalya showed up to one, she still was incredibly happy to see her. Some times even made sure to dedicate a song or two to her friend. It was nowhere near enough for what she'd done with the cover art for their album anyway.

She chuckled at her next words. "You've been doing a lot of weddings recently, too. How's that going? Ugh, I love a wedding. Everyone's always so happy. Do you get to do cute couple portraits?" She asked as she leaned into Ahalya, knocking her head against hers playfully. "You know, the only wedding I've ever played was Jameson's forever ago now that I think about it. I sang their first song together, I had a totally different band back then." She admitted before she laughed, giving Ahalya a soft squeeze before she began leading her away from the stage to get some water. "I am starving and need like three bottled waters, come on. Did you have dinner yet? We need to catch up."
