This is a recipe for an essential oil blend which can be used for aromatherapy in an oil warmer, as an oil-based perfume, or in the making of bath or skin products.  The recipe is a RATIO, which means that it can be easily doubled or tripled depending on what you’re using it for. 

A scent inspired by Astarion Ancunín’s own forays into perfume-making.  Bright, full, and complex, the prickly green herbs and sophisticated citrus of this unique cologne are gentled by a background of aged resinous wood and vanilla.  Herbal but warm, the curious mix of rosemary and bergamot is bracing and strong, but not overwhelming– the perfect cover for the stylish man about town who wishes to hide the unwholesome air of undeath.

Can be used in lotions, cologne bases or with a carrier oil, but would not recommend for use in cosmetics that are applied to the face or mouth.  As I have allergies stemming from many synthetic scents, I only use essential oils.  Bergamot is photoreactive! Please do not apply to your skin before going into the sun, you willl burn.



Astarion Essential Oil Blend Recipe

5 drops Bergamot essential oil  (citrus bergamia)

3 drops Rosemary essential oil   (rosmarinus officinalis)

2 drops Frankincense essential oil  (boswellia serrata))

2 drops Vanilla botanical extract  (vanilla planifolia)

1 drop Sweet Fennel essential oil (foeniculum vulgare)

Notes:

Wet: Goes on with a burst of citrus and woody herbs that quickly fades into an intensely green, very layered scent.

Dry: it dries down with just a hint of honey-sweetness, anise, and a strong bergamot presence with pleasantly dusty old wood notes.

Please be aware if you’ve never used essential oils- they should be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied to skin.  Good quality grapeseed oil isn’t a bad choice, and it’s cheap!  I use sweet almond usually.

Store your finished product in a container that is tinted, as exposure to sunlight will make the scent fade faster.

Citrus oils are photoreactive, as noted above. They will burn your skin if you go into direct sunlight after applying.

Ever wanted to smell like a church? Then do I have the botanical perfume recipe for you! Smells like church pews cleaned with Murphy's Oil Soap, and a haze of frankincense.

Measured in drops because I'm a pleb:

1 cedarwood

2 sandalwood

3 rosewood

3 scotch pine

8 frankincense 20% (this is what I have on hand)

2 citronella

Adjust to taste and multiply as needed. Would be cool to use a fixed oil as the carrier medium like an anointing oil! I recommend jojoba or fractionated coconut oil as they don't oxidize nor turn rancid, thus acting as a natural preservative. Dilute to 20%-30% for an eau de parfum in oil, and 15%-25% eau de parfum in cosmetic/perfumer's alcohol.

Rae, I'm so sorry I'm just now replying to this! And I'm sorry in general for how crap I've been at replying to messages for the last month.

So! About 15 years ago I got into BPAL (Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab) because @charmingpplincardigans mentioned them. They're an independent company that makes perfume oils inspired by books, comics, mythology, places, etc. Their perfume descriptions are really descriptive. Part of the book The Night Circus was inspired by BPAL. Anyway! They were kind of my gateway into enjoying perfume. I like indie and mainstream fragrance.

I am very much an amateur at making perfume! But I've learned over the years about perfume construction (top, heart, and base notes - it's why a lot of perfumes smell different from the moment you spray it until it dries down) and what different notes smell like. I'm not great at identifying notes the way some people are, but I've gotten okay at it. Anyway, I've made some of my own blends from essential oils, concretes/absolutes (different ways of extracting scent from a raw material), and perfume oils. Most of them are very basic, based on wanting a certain combination of notes that I can't seem to find, or wanting a single note of something to layer with another perfume. Sometimes I'll test a perfume that's too expensive or was limited edition, so I try to create something similar. Also, most modern designer perfumes are very sweet, including men's fragrance, because that's been the trend for the last couple of decades. (I'm also very interested in the history of perfume and cosmetics! I love niche historical topics.) I don't always want something sweet, so sometimes I make it myself! At first I only made perfumes in a carrier oil base, but then I found 190 proof vodka for super cheap at the liquor store, and now I use it as perfumer's alcohol!

And like I said, I usually make very simple blends! Or I play around with layering things.

(Disclaimer: I advise anyone who uses essential oils to be careful, especially if you have kids or pets. Some of them can be toxic or photosensitizing. For instance, I've seen some natural perfumes on Etsy that use citrus EOs, which are photosensitizing in the sun. And some oils are toxic and deadly to pets! So please be careful what you apply to your skin or diffuse near them, or if they like to lick your skin.)

Examples include common essential oils like lavender, orange, tea tree oil, and ylang-ylang. All of these oils have certain benefits for skin or hair and are commonly used in aromatherapy. However, they are only used in very small, diluted amounts.

Carrier Oil: A base oil used to dilute essential oils before topical application. Typically a single-source oil, but not always.

These are usually pressed, as opposed to the steam distillation process used to extract essential oils.

Single-Source Oil: As the name suggests, these are oils that come from one plant source that are deemed harmless for topical application, exempting an individual's specific allergies.

How to Use Essential Oils Topically:

A typical recipe is 1 fl oz carrier oil of your choice to 1-3 drops of essential oil, depending on the strength of the oil and your tolerance. Shake well to mix before each use because the oils can separate when left to settle.

Essential Oils: Eucalyptus  Eucalyptus globulus

The following information is from Essential Oils for Beginners: The Guide to Get Started with Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Althea Press.

DESCRIPTION  There are over seven hundred eucalyptus species, many of which are used in the production of eucalyptus essential oil. Only a handful of these species are effective when used in aromatherapy. Of these, Eucalyptus globulus is most popular, and it should not be confused with E. radiata (sometimes nicknamed black peppermint essential oil), E. citriodora (lemon eucalyptus essential oil), or any other type of eucalyptus essential oil. Eucalyptus essential oil has a fresh woody, earthy fragrance, with a strong medicinal aroma and a thin consistency. When used in aromatherapy, it is considered a top note.

PROPERTIES  Antiaging, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antiseptic, deodorant, expectorant, insecticide, mucolytic  

APPLICATION  Eucalyptus essential oil should be diluted 50:50 with a carrier oil prior to use. It is suitable for direct inhalation, diffusion, and topical application. Eucalyptus globulus is suitable for ingestion; other forms of eucalyptus essential oil are not.  

PRIMARY USES  Soothes arthritis, rheumatism, and muscle pains; eases sinusitis, coughs, bronchitis, cold and flu symptoms, and ear inflammation; combats candida, chicken pox, and measles symptoms; reduces acne; cleanses minor wounds; eases diabetes symptoms; boosts immune system.  Eucalyptus essential oil is used in manufacturing, as a fragrance for cosmetics and perfumes, and in antiseptics, ointments and liniments, cough drops, toothpaste, and other products. Some dentists use eucalyptus oil as a solvent for root canal fillings. It is also often used for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cancer.  In addition, eucalyptus essential oil is useful as an insect repellent and as a natural flea deterrent. When properly diluted, it can be used on pets as well as humans. It makes a fantastic addition to massage oils and lotions, household cleaning products, and bath products, including shampoos and conditioners. When inhaled, eucalyptus essential oil can be used to promote emotional well-being, and during meditation it is useful for focusing on relationships.

SAFE USE  Eucalyptus oil must be diluted prior to use. Add one part essential oil to four parts carrier oil before adding to any recipe or applying topically. Only use therapeutic-grade eucalyptus oil, and conduct a patch test using diluted eucalyptus essential oil prior to applying any product that contains it.

Faithfully Yours- A Gale of Waterdeep-inspired Perfume Blend

this is a recipe for an essential oil blend which can be used for aromatherapy in an oil warmer or as a perfume.  The recipe is a RATIO, which means that it can be easily doubled or tripled depending on what you’re using it for.  

Inspired by the charming and erudite Gale of Waterdeep from Baldur’s Gate 3, this scent evokes the warmth of scholarly companionship, tucked away in a maze of bookshelves.  Hints of mystical incense and worn-in leather mix with a waft of lavender from a waiting bath somewhere beyond your idyll in the heart of a wizard’s tower.  An ungranted wish.

Can be used in lotions, cologne bases or with a carrier oil, but would not recommend for use in cosmetics that are applied to the face or mouth.  As I have allergies stemming from many synthetic scents, I only use essential oils, and cannot speak to how this would work with synthetics.  Lemon oil is photoreactive!  Please do not apply before going into direct sunlight, as it can cause the skin to burn.

Gale Essential Oil Blend

2 drops Vetiver essential oil  (vetiveria zizanioides)

1 drop Frankincense essential oil  (boswellia serrata)

1 drops Coffee essential oil  (coffea arabica)

2 drop Vanilla botanical extract  (vanilla planifolia)

2 drops Lemon essential oil (citrus x limon)

1 drops Lavender essential oil (lavandula angustifolia)

Notes:

Wet:  vibrant lemon and uplifting green herbs followed by a quick burst of coffee’s nutty-bitter warmth and a hint of incense, bracing and bright.

Dry: tart citrus fades quickly, and the sharpness of the lavender does as well, leaving behind a rich, velvety soft layered scent.  A cozy, snuggly perfume that’s still complex and full of depth.

Warnings:

Please be aware if you’ve never used essential oils- they should be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied to skin.  Good quality grapeseed oil isn’t a bad choice, and it’s cheap!  I use sweet almond usually.

Store your finished product in a container that is tinted, as exposure to sunlight will make the scent fade faster.

I use Vanilla botanical extract, but vanilla oleoresin is also fine, though it will tint your finished perfume brownish.

As noted above, lemon (and all citrus) essential oil is photoreactive (reacts with sunlight). I have very sensitive pasty skin, but I’m always careful to only apply diluted, and have yet to be burned.
