so i guess all the rumours about the PCU being a literal shell to funnel characters from its periphery to its core is true then?
korodothal and "elub" (oronaar and assemblage) basically have confirmed the same thing? rotating carousel of members joining, leaving within a week / logging in purely for events / no social rp allowed / guild discord|chat basically used for taking pot shots at people / massively elitist.
This has been known to us for an extremely long time. The PCU guilds (on Alliance mainly) set up by Perroy initially were largely also used to siphon members into the Horde. The only guilds on Alliance that ever had a free standing (ie not controlled by Perroy) were Holy Order of Lordain, Azure Dawn and Ardent Pursuit, of which only the last is now clinging on.
After The Bloody Verdict collapsed due to Vyst being a predator (and Perroy knowing for a long time that he was) it was decided internally that the PCU was a HORDE organisation (The Stygian Legion) and that the Alliance guilds were nothing more than NPCs for events. One of our editors at the time was a member of the Bloody Verdict who experienced the drama that spilled out.
Without Perroy or indeed any major leader left from the 'old guard' its no wonder the whole structure is unravelling increasingly at whiplash inducing speeds. Our census which will be out in the next few days may just well be the final PCU census, or at least the final one with the PCU having a shred of continued relevance on the server.

National Carousel Day
Find a local fair or amusement park, or a designated carousel and have some old-fashioned fun. Or, stay home and watch the hit musical, “Carousel”.
When we think of carousels, we think of the beautifully designed horses, with golden metal poles mounted down the center and accompanied by circus music. Since the early 1800’s, carousels are all about the children, laughing as they go round and round and have been a huge part of American history.
While there are many designs to carousels, the idea of a carousel has been around for centuries before America even existed. So, to observe the fine-tuned history of carousels, Carousel Day is a day just for that! So strap in and enjoy the ride on an American pastime.
Learn about Carousel Day
The purpose of Carousel Day is to honor this incredible invention. This is one of the most instantly recognizable fairground and amusement park rides. A carousel, which is also known as a merry-go-round, is a sort of amusement ride, which consists of a circular platform that rotates and has seats for riders. Traditionally, these seats would be wooden horses or other animals. However, we have seen different themed carousels pop up over the world.
Some of the world’s most magical carousels can be found at:
The Musée des Arts Forains at the Pavillons de Bercy in Paris
Wisconsin’s House on the Rock
Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn, New York
The Stoomcarrousel in Efteling, Netherlands
These carousels are special for different reasons. Jane’s Carousel is housed in a glass box, providing amazing urban views of New York. The Stoomcarrousel, on the other hand, is a much older carousel, which celebrates steam power. It was built in 1895, and it traveled around many places until an amusement park in Efteling purchased it in 1956. These are just a few of the incredible carousels you can find all over the world, and so we definitely recommend doing a bit of digging online. You will be amazed by some of the stunning and magical carousels that are situated around the world.
History of Carousel Day
In order to understand the history of Carousel Day, we need to understand the history of the carousel. One of the first conceptual designs for a carousel was in 500 A.D. in the Byzantine Empire, which depicts baskets, carrying riders, suspended from a central pole.
This was an activity that needed excellent horsemanship and skill. In fact, the word carousel comes from the word ‘garosello,’ which is Italian, and the word ‘carosella,’ which is Spanish. It means ‘little battle.’ This was used by crusaders as a description of the combat preparation exercises and games that were played by the Arabian and Turkish horsemen during the 12th century.
There were carousels being created and operated at a number of different gatherings and fairs in England and Central Europe in the early 18th century. However, it was not until the 1840s when Franz Wiesenoffer created the first merry-go-round in the United States in Hessville, Ohio. Unfortunately, though. He did not patent the design, and so he’s not officially credited as the creator.
Then, Bette Largent, President of the National Carousel Association, and carousel historian, Ronald Hopkins founded National Merry-Go-Round Day in 2014. Also called Carousel Day, it was formed to honor William Schneider of Davenport, Iowa who, due to patenting the carousel in 1871, is considered the official inventor of the modern carousel by the U.S. Patent Office.
The National Carousel Association, operating since 1973, aims to keep carousels running and preserve their history in the United States. Since then, the NCA tracks the history of carousels all around the United States in its census. The NCA is a non-profit organization and accepts donations to help keep carousel history alive.
The NCA also has a census, a giant data collection of carousels all over North America, keeping track of vintage and modern carousels, as well as repairing old carousels to keep them functioning. Every year, the NCA hosts a convention called The New England Carousel Revolution, where people travel around in buses all over the New England area to check out vintage carousels in parks, museums, and boardwalks.
How to celebrate Carousel Day
According to the NCA census, there are hundreds of registered carousels in the United States. In fact, chances are there is a carousel hiding your neighborhood just waiting to be discovered. Celebrate this holiday with a visit to your local fair by checking the national census on the NCA’s webpage.
Also, check your local area for county fairs or amusement parks and head on out there. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of your local carousel, find out by contacting your local directors and asking them about it. Take your kids to the local fair, or if you don’t have kids, ride one yourself. Go out there and have fun!
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Carousel Day from the comfort of your own home, why not watch the film Carousel? This is a 1956 musical movie, which is based on a musical from 1945 that had the same name.
A lot of critics have stated that this musical contains the most beautiful songs that have been created by Rodgers and Hammerstein. For those who are unaware, Rodgers and Hammerstein refer to a duo of the lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II and composer Richard Rodgers. The story is about a handsome, macho, and rough-talking carousel barker, called Billy Bigelow, and an innocent and young mill worker, Julie Jordan.
The plot is one of the most serious storylines found in a musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, as you go on a journey of love and heartbreak. It is a great film to watch, and it has received a lot of positive reviews, so why not celebrate Carousel Day by getting the popcorn in and watching this movie?

Making Your Military Move: Neighborhoods Near Military Stations!
Tumblr media
The DMV area is home to several major military bases – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines – with many on-base housing options. However, for those families who choose to live off-base, there are loads of alternatives. Here’s a brief overview of some of the areas that surround Andrews Airforce Base, Fort Belvoir, and Fort Meade.
And when it is time to relocate, CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty has more than 150 military-certified relocation agents who can help you buy, sell or rent. Not only will these professionals guide you through the entire process, they know how to help you get the most financial gain from your move.
Tumblr media
Joint Base Andrews spans over 4,000 acres in Prince George’s County, Md., and has an on-base residential property population of approximately 2,600 people.
Greater Upper Marlboro
Located in Prince George’s County, Greater Upper Marlboro (the county seat) has a population of around 20,000 people, but the census divides the area into several smaller designated places. The median home value is $376,400.
This area is a mix of urban and rural. The town itself is small and quaint. Family entertainment includes:
Watkins Regional Park with an authentic, hand-carved and restored turn-of-the-century carousel, miniature train ride, putt-putt golf, a playground, and camping;
Six Flags America (nearby), a theme park with more than 100 rides, games, shows, and attractions;
Montpelier Farms, a working farm featuring activities, festivals, and a farm market.
Clinton
With a population of 38,760 at the time of the 2020 census, Clinton is home to the Surratt House Museum, a Maryland-National Capital Park, and Planning Commission facility. Built in 1852 as a middle-class farmhouse, its interesting ties to John Wilkes Booth make it doubly worth a tour.
Oxon Hill
Named for a colonial 18th-century manor home overlooking the Potomac River, Oxon Hill had a population of 18,791 at the time of the 2020 census. The original manor house burned down, but a large neo-Georgian-style home was built in its place in 1929 and is owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and is used for special events.
Oxon Hill is also the location of the National Harbor development, a large mixed-use community with residential units, hotel rooms, retail space, upscale dining, and entertainment. The MGM National Harbor Resort Casino is located at the entrance of this development.
Oxon Hill’s family fun includes the Oxon Cove Farm educational facility and the Henson Creek hiker-biker trail.
Other attractions in nearby Fort Washington include:
Rosecroft Raceway (“the Raceway by the Beltway”) which offers harness horse racing;
The Henson Creek Golf Course;
The Tucker Road Athletic Complex with swimming and ice skating.
Tumblr media
Fort Belvoir is located in Fairfax County, Va., halfway between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Va., making it ideal for tourists who are interested in history as it is close to national parks, museums, monuments, and more. For those who work at Fort Belvoir but choose to live off base, Burke, Lorton, and Alexandria are popular choices.
Burke and Lorton, Va.
The 2020 census lists Lorton as having a population of 19,844. The median home value at that time was $463,767.
Burke’s 2020 census shows a population of 42,806. The median home value in Burke is $537,032.
The Lorton VRE station is served by the VRE Fredericksburg Line which runs between the city of Fredericksburg to the south and Washington’s Union Station to the north.
The Lorton Amtrack station is the northern terminal for Amtrak’s Auto Train which runs between this station and the Sanford station in Sanford, Florida.
Special attractions include the 218-acre Burke Lake and Lorton’s Workhouse Arts Center (a former prison!) which provides 300 performances, 12 gallery spaces, hundreds of classes, and several large-scale community events.
Alexandria
According to the 2020 census, Alexandria’s population was 160,146 — the sixth largest city in Virginia. The median home value at that time was $545,000.
Historic Alexandria is perfect for those who appreciate the arts, culture, outdoor activities, and entertainment.
Nearby George Washington’s Mount Vernon is the most visited historic home in the U.S., but there are also so many other historic sites here, as well as an abundance of restaurants, wineries, breweries, entertainment, and cultural events.
Tumblr media
Located between Washington and Baltimore, Fort Meade is located in Anne Arundel County, Md. Surrounding neighborhoods include the communities of Odenton, Laurel, and Columbia.
Odenton
According to the 2020 census, Odenton’s population was 42,947. The median home value at that time was $337,700.
Odenton’s school system is ranked above average, and Bowie State University and Anne Arundel Community College are both nearby. Odenton offers natural entertainment in the form of parks. The Patuxent Research Refuge is nearby and offers fishing, wildlife observation, hiking, and biking.
Because Odenton is located just 19 miles from Baltimore and 15 miles from Annapolis, there’s also great proximity to historic sites, diverse dining venues and entertainment, but Odenton also has four main shopping centers as well as an ice rink, golf center, go-kart raceway, athletic club, and more. The Odenton MARC station makes this a great place for commuters to live.
Laurel
Located in northern Prince George’s County, Laurel’s population was reported as 42,947 in 2020 and the median home value was $337,700.
The City of Laurel’s Department of Parks and Recreation maintains more than 200 acres of parkland (19 park sites) which includes playgrounds, pavilions, athletic fields, trails, tennis courts, pools, basketball courts, and more.
A couple of unique highlights located in Laurel include:
The Maryland Jockey Club, known for world-class Thoroughbred horse racing.
Dinosaur Park, a fenced area where visitors can join paleontologists in searching for early Cretaceous (145 to 66 million years ago) fossils.
Columbia
At the time of the 2020 census, Columbia’s population was 104,681. The median home price was $385,900.
Located in Howard County, this planned community opened in 1967 and consists of 10 self-contained villages that were designed to enhance its residents’ quality of life in terms of human values (attempting to eliminate racial, religious and class segregation), rather than economics, and engineering.
Lakes Kittamaqundi and Centennial offer boating and fishing. The Rocky Gorge Reservoir offers hiking, horseback riding, and fishing.
The public schools are rated highly, and Columbia consistently earns a spot in Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live in the U.S.” list, ranking first place in 2016.
If you’re in the military and it’s time to move, it’s important to find an agent who not only knows the neighborhoods around each military station, but according to CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty’s Director of Relocation Services, Tina Bodolosky, it’s also advantageous to work with a real estate professional who is trained specifically to help members of the military.
The Military Relocation Professional (MRP) certification program educates REALTORS® about working with service members and their families as well as veterans to find housing solutions that best suit their needs. They can also help you take full advantage of available benefits and support.
One such benefit, says Tina: “We offer cash back programs of up to $8,000 when you buy or sell a home through our Navy Federal Realty Plus or Military Rewards programs and utilize one of our background checked and military relocation certified agents.”

@thecasaofjulesii Perhaps surprisingly, a search for ‘Fuckton, South Dakota’ yields nothing of interest. However, you may be interested to know that Faulkton is nicknamed ‘The Carousel City’ and encloses a whopping 785 people (2000 census figure), at least one of whom has (we hope) licked the jitters.

I remember seeing a post that says "a lot of people from cities say/think they're from small towns and they're wrong" and it bugs me a bit -- not because they're wrong, but because +at least in the US) there's a lot of overlap, and this ignores the broad middle category of Small Cities, which are a mixture of the worst of both worlds:
Buses exist, but they don't work, don't run on time, and usually cost more than you can afford. This means that you live in the same amount of area as a big city, but you still have to drive or walk to go anywhere unless you want to be an hour early or late and have a curfew of When Buses Stop Running, which is usually by dusk, and also usually includes weekends and holidays.
No maintenance of city services. Water and sewer companies that are contracted under a city don't do their jobs until sewage is literally flooding into the streets. Roads don't get fixed, or they get halfway fixed before the money runs out, and then there's a bulldozer and a bunch of traffic cones sitting out for 6+ months blocking a major through-way. Buses, despite being inaccessibly expensive, only get fixed when they break down to the point of not being able to move, and are never cleaned beyond a quick sweeping. That overwhelming smell of piss in the seats of the 5? It's been there since 1993. It'll be there until 2030, because there's no ventilation. Roads would be better off if they were dirt.
There will be more than one grocery store: there might be three! You will have to drive to all three grocery stores to find anything you need beyond the most basic staples of food and hygiene, because they're all supplied by UNFI and UNFI is constantly fudging one store's order so they can fulfill another, and they're all "who gives a fuck about this shithole town anyway?"
Everyone still expects you to grow old and die there. That sounds like the worst possible fate, but the wage difference between what you get at a shitty part-time job and the minimum income needed to move away, even just to a different small city, may as well be billions of dollars, because you can't make that happen.
Oh, jobs. There are jobs. They exist. Would you like to work at one of several fast food places, one of the three grocery stores, The Mall, the GameStop (which is the only normal store in The Mall that hasn't closed down five times) the "adult store," or as part of a pyramid scheme? In all cases, your job will short you on your paychecks, be run by that creepy guy who has definitely wanted in your pants or bullied you or both since high school despite him graduating years before you, put you on part time and schedule you just under full time hours and making sure you're constantly understaffed so that you get maybe one five minute break in your 5 hour and 45 minute shift and a totally different schedule every week that you only get to find out by driving back on what may or may not be your one day off, labor laws and basic human decency be damned. Also get used to the army recruiters dropping by and asking you if you want to do a job that Totally Won't Traumatize You And Force You To Commit Murder.
Just like actual small towns, there's nothing to do except "hang out" or go to a bar if you're old enough. There might be two more bars than you'd expect to have in a small town. They are all owned by one guy. They are all exactly the same.
Yes, there's a Wal-Mart on the outskirts of town. It's a desolate thing.
Just outside of your small city are the farms. Beyond those are forests and highways and... more farms.
There is some kind of public works attraction because someone thought making an old-fashioned carousel, or a big modern park, etc., would bring in tourism. It cost the city so much money. It's practically derelict.
The last census counted potentially more than 50,000 people. That's a lot of people! You will only see the same hundred or so people the entire time you live there. There are no events where you can meet more people. You still only hang out with the people you knew in high school. If you're straight, you're either married or you've run out of people in your dating pool. If you aren't straight, you're desperately trying to move to a less small city so that you don't kill yourself before some right-wing Christians get the chance.
On that note: your city was planned with the idea that 10,000 people living there was a few decades away. Now there's more than 50,000 people. Enjoy the wonder of a big city traffic jam on your rural and neighborhood roads, every single day. Also enjoy power outages whenever the weather requires air conditioning or heat, whenever the wind gets high, during nearly every thunderstorm, and whenever an electrical transformer explodes because it hasn't been maintained in 30+ years.
Everyone talks shit about the other towns and small cities that aren't the one you live in, knowing that people in those places talk shit about yours in exactly the same way.
There is a doctor's office and a dentist, and even a specialist or two beyond that -- possibly more than one office of each. You will not drive as far as the people in neighboring small towns to get to them. They will be just as overworked and unhelpful for you as for the people coming from out of town.

3)  Hatteras Island
Hatteras island , reconnect with family and friends, and yourself, through a variety of recreation. For example, you can fish right from the beach or take a charter boat out to the deep blue water of the Gulf Stream. Learn to harness the wind on a kiteboard or take lessons in leisure on paddleboards with your crew. There's little in the way of franchises and fast food but don’t confuse “doing without” with “going without.” Instead, think of soulful coastal restaurants and interesting mom-and-pop shops. While your setting will be a bit more on the untamed side of nature, accommodations are as modest or modern as you like. The beauty of Hatteras is that you can easily reach all the other OBX hotspots, but call a simpler and quieter part of the barrier islands your home away from home.
https://kayakfishinsider.com/ highlights winter on Hatteras Island, with businesses that are open and activities that are occurring during this special season.
Hatteras fishing is serious business especially for the anglers. People visit this place for other reasons like beach fun and shopping but the fishing feature attracts them the most. This location is famous for off shore fishing. This location is most suitable in winters between November and December. It is considered one of the best fishing spots on the Atlantic Coast and is famous for Yellow fin Tuna and Mahi Mahi. It is quite accessible for the tourist to reach the Island as the flights to this place are connected to all airports in Australia. This is the best fishing location especially in the season of September to December. The fish found here is the Black Marlin and you need to change your style of fishing for these local gliders. Whatever your expectations, rest assured, there are miles of isolated coastline, pristine waters and an ample array of sports and activities for every taste, from diving to boardsailing.  It remains popular for almost the whole year but the peak time is from May to November. Marlins found here are really huge in size and shape nearly around or more than 1000 pounds. This is a very affordable destination to visit which can turn out to be very productive, fun and rewarding as well

are accessible from the Hessie Trailhead in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The lakes are located half a mile apart in the open tundra of an isolated offshoot in a gorgeous alpine valley. Visitors will enjoy light crowds and pristine landscapes on the hike to Betty and Bob lakes: Betty Lake is located just 9 miles away from Netherlands which is quite near. It is one of the best fishing locations in the whole of United States of America. You may find here a wide variety of cutthroat Trout which means there are full chances to get a bite! It is situated at the beautiful landscape of Indian Peaks Wilderness. It is basically a kind of hilly area with mountains and trees and shrubs all around. are rivers that rise from springs in landscapes with chalk bedrock. Since chalk is permeable, water percolates easily through the ground to the water table and chalk streams therefore receive little surface runoff. As a result, the water in the streams contains little organic matter and sediment and is generally very clear. The beds of the rivers are generally composed of clean, compacted gravel and flints, which are good spawning areas for Salmonidae fish species Fish found here is the famous Trout which is available plentiful here. Spring season is the best season to go for fishing in this area and it is totally within your budget. So, if you want a beautiful fishing experience then it’s a must visit.
10) JEROME LAKE, ALASKA
It is also called Fair man Lake .At this fishing location you will find the Trout fish in large numbers. The view of this location is breathtaking and of course very photogenic. The late fall season is the most suitable for fishing here as it is the migration time. So, get your fishing rods and reel ready to catch Trout fish as many as you can.

At the peninsula’s tip, Montauk Point State Park is home to the 1796 Montauk Point Lighthouse. A museum in the keeper’s house displays historical documents signed by George Washington. Camp Hero State Park, once a military base, has WWII bunkers and a radar tower. Fishermen generally find smaller fish here as their fins get rub by the sandy shores of Montauk but these also weigh more than 40-50 pounds.

Here is a look at our app form and census ( equipped with an ooc section above the pictured ic ) ! Featuring pop-up profiles, Death Knell will be utilising a profile/freeform application combined with a built-in shipper within your main profile in which will complete our registration process. After acceptance, you will then post your census ( which acts as a compendium of all your characters using a carousel-like feature ) and plotting may began. You can find specific information regarding character creation from our guidebook beneath the cut !
THE BASICS
Please register with a first name and last name in uppercase. If your character follows different naming conventions, however, feel free to register as that instead. Duplicates of names are not permitted at Death Knell at present time.

REGISTRATION
Death Knell utilizes a profile application combined with a shipper in which completes our registration process.
The shipper portion of the application is expected to provide a summary and fill in any blanks ( if your freeform is not an informative bio ) as well as outline an overview of potential character relationships. This can be in the traditional format ( friends, enemies, and lovers ) and/or include plot hooks, which describe roles or relationships your character is looking to have filled. The shipper is located in the third tab of your main profile and is filled out in its corresponding field within your user settings. The freeform or application section is located in the second tab of your main profile and should be submitted in the signature input area. It typically covers a biography of your character and can be in any format you choose — short narratives, snapshots of your character's history, or even something more elaborate. It has a minimum word count of 400.
All necessary graphic dimensions are located in your user settings but are as follows:
Profile images ( user control panel ) should be 600px by 1700px. Post avatars ( user control panel ) should be 440px by 840px. Census/Directory images ( user control panel ) should be 600px by 600px. Aesthetic profile images ( user control panel ) will all resize as necessary. If you are in need of assistance when it comes to creating these images for your character, please see the #graphics channel in our discord and a staff member will provide them for you.
Once you have completed filling in your profile information, its freeform and shipper you may then submit your character for review in our #submit channel on discord. When approved, you will then be required to post your census and plotting / threading may begin. Applications typically take between 24 to 48 hours to review. Applications involving subplots or requests or wanted ads may take slightly longer case dependent.
Member group colors will appear upon acceptance.
After you are accepted, make sure you have posted in all the necessary claims areas. These include your Census, Master Claims and Occupation Claims, and potentially Subplot Claims if possessing a character associated there.
Please see our discord channel #moderation for requesting a development board for your characters, archiving threads, census cleanout, etc.

Wildlife Catchup
Tumblr media
A bright start weather wise and I’m pleased to be feeling brighter myself. I’ve had a couple of lazy days following my vaccination mid day on Saturday. The sore and tender arm was totally expected as I had the same after my ‘flu vaccine and the general feeling off colour wasn’t any worse than after that one, it just lasted longer. If I’d had obligations and commitments I could’ve probably soldiered on, but hey, a little loafing around didn’t hurt and it’s far better than the potential consequences of not being vaccinated. Crow didn’t have any after-effects and I have heard anecdotally that it’s mainly women who do, I wonder if that’ll be checked out at all and we’ll find out if it’s the case or not? We’re still both reporting in daily to the Zoe app Kings College, London study.
Remember please
Tumblr media
There are loads of links today and lots to read and see on them. I recommend for a bit of escapism.
One thing I did yesterday was a lot of reading, mostly the International Women’s Day links, but that lead me to this, an illustration by  ‘artist Debbie Lomas, sketched the picture for me - nothing special she said ... I wish she would embrace modern technology and have a website so you could all rush and buy her art! As it is, you will have to wait until her shop in Chester is open - it is called Rainforest and is on Watergate Row! ‘
Small world, I used to love shopping in Chester and ambling around The Rows
I digress here. but the other night I watched a travel programme on catchup TV by Gregg Wallace, he was in York and I got pangs for Chester seeing the similar sights in these two English Roman cities.
Tumblr media
Back to the artwork, it’s part of publicising This Petition for hedgehog protection. Hugh Warwick gives an update off the back of IWD.
First - around 80% of the 17,000 very active and enthusiastic members of the Hedgehog Highways Facebook Group are women! Women rock the hedgehog world - the vast majority of carers out there, those running the hedgehog hospitals, are women. And when I scan through the names of the newly signed to this petition, again, most are women!
Why is this?
From the hedgehog's perspective too - please look away if you are of a sensitive disposition ... courtship can last for over an hour, with a male circling a female in what is known as the Hedgehog Carousel. The huffing and puffing is unmistakable ... have you heard it? Soon we will start to hear it again ... spring is bubbling along nicely. After all that hard work, and a brief 'interlude' in the form of mating - the male is off ... nothing more to do with raising young and seems to show no recognition to his offspring either.
Protect the UK's dwindling hedgehog population before it's too late.
Now the hedgehog has been listed as vulnerable to extinction in the UK, we are calling on the Government to move hedgehogs to schedule 5 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to allow them greater protection.
and it just so happens that it’s The Hedgehog Society’s 10th birthday 💖 Here’s what they’d like us all to do and to be mindful of.
Tumblr media
We really should all try to do our bit. I love it when driving in to our village, you  that someone’s put up a Hedgehog awareness sign at the roadside.
Also browsing through Twitter last week I was taken by this beautifully crafted newsletter from the Buckfastleigh Wildwatch group. All I know about Buckfastleigh is that it’s in Devon has a famous Abbey - Buckfast Abbey, which has an extremely rich history and this FUN FACT which I just found on Wikipedia
With 13 letters, Buckfastleigh is one of the longest place names in England with no repeated letters, tied with Buslingthorpe, Leeds and Buslingthorpe, Lincolnshire, but exceeded by Bricklehampton with 14 letters.
* Bricklehampton (pop 220, 2011 census) is in Worcestershire (Wuss ter sheer) by the way
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you click on the pictures they should enlarge and you’ll be able to read the newsletter, you can see it has a section about Hedgehogs, but so much more as well.
Images are via John Walters’ Twitter @JWentomologist on 3rd March 2021, so if you find it hard to read on here, try looking on his timeline.
The Buckfastleigh newsletter mentions their Greater Horseshoe Bats. We don’t have GH types, I think the ones we see are Pipistrelles which are both the smallest UK bat and the most commonplace, although I wouldn’t describe this one as golden brown.
Tumblr media
Bat in the porch from my photo library
If you want to read up on a bat I’d never heard of before, one of the UK’s most rare, then National Geographic has an article on the Grey Big Eared Bat.
Grey/Gray same thing.
A random link of bats to cats because two recent stories amused me in the way the ‘and finally’ clips at the end of national news bulletins used to
Nearly a well-travelled cat
Cat Rescues itself well, kind of.
It reminds me of the time I was outside with Crow and said to him ‘you know how they always used to have cartoons of cats stuck in trees? I’ve never seen a cat up a tree’ whereupon our foster cat of 8 months, Socks, flew out of the house, right down the garden and straight up the big tree at the end. It was absolutely uncanny.
It happened all over again when Ms NW tY’s elegant white cat, Minx, who used to go straight into GI Jane mode when she came to stay here, took herself a good 40′ up one of the Poplars and stayed there for the afternoon, while I watched her, heart in my mouth, wondering how I was going to make sure she got down safely. I don’t know what it was about the country air, but that cat had a massive personality change the moment she got her paws through our front gate.
Finally I’ve got a picture of last night’s sunset and links to the two cities I mentioned earlier. What makes a place into a city?
QUIZ QUESTION?
Where is the UK’s smallest city?
Even though St Davids is officially the smallest city in the UK, there is still plenty to see and do including tours of the cathedral, hikes along the Welsh Coastal Path and adventurous boat tours
and as mentioned earlier
Chester Cathedral and York Cathedral which is known as York Minster.

What’s 1 thing you’re grateful for 𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐖? I’ll tell you what stands out to me... . The people in Madagascar 🇲🇬 so far made the biggest impact in my views of the world. On our way to the commune of Saint Augustine and in the commune itself, there is so much poverty!! While the country is incredibly beautiful, the people don’t have it easy. The rainy season which helps provide, went down from 6 months to 4. The earth in that side of the country is mostly dry, torrid, not giving of much life. People have to walk MILES to get 1 bucket of water & there’s no doctor in sight, in case something happens. Children ask for a sip of water on the side of the road, and as I’m about to get my period, I couldn’t help but wonder - what do the women & young girls in these villages do, when they have to deal with it every month? A piece of cloth they have to wash & reuse... To all the sisters out there, think about the logistics of that. Our western commodities are really far away from their reality. . Now I don’t want this post to be grim, but I wanted to share a sliver of what I’ve seen life to be like over here, and explain why I said what I said in yesterday’s post. . I want to leave you now in gratitude. Because no matter what’s in your life right now... what troubles, headaches & road blocks you might be facing.... you’re still VERY blessed! There’s ALWAYS somebody out there 🌍 doing a whole lot worse. So... what’s 1 thing you’re grateful for this very moment? Swipe through the carousel to see pictures of some of the beautiful faces of Madagascar. PS. The people of Tulear KNOW how to cook a mean meal for tourists. The best & freshest fish I’ve ever had in my life!! Lastly... The census said 366,000 people visited Madagascar 🇲🇬 in 2017. They will depend more & more on tourism, so I highly encourage you to check out this beautiful country for yourself. _____________________________________ #traveltheworld #madagascar #travelphotography #ilovetravelling #seetheworld #traveldiary #africa #gratitudeattitude #traveladdict (at Madagascar) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3184NUHz4G/?igshid=1lp320ybgpnk3

Photos: Exploring DeKalb County’s smallest city, the artsy, off-kilter, scenic Pine Lake
Tumblr media
Site of this weekend’s LakeFest, the 12-acre lake is a community hub and ecological, spiritual destination, per locals.
The mayor moonlights as a guitarist. The police chief’s a poet from Brooklyn. A 12-year-old girl helps lead the environmental council. That’s Pine Lake
Head east from Atlanta past Decatur and Avondale Estates, beyond the foreboding DeKalb County Jail, over Interstate 285, through the frenetic commercialism of Memorial Drive, and a couple of miles before Stone Mountain, branch right onto Rockbridge Road, and then left into the City of Pine Lake. If your dashboard has a thermometer, it’s here the locals swear the numbers will start dropping, even in the swelter of an Indian summer, right alongside your blood pressure.
Now slow down. And behold the funky little city that sprawl forgot.
Amidst a growing region that prides itself on bigger, taller, and more in general, Pine Lake covets diminutiveness, the sense that it’s pretty much finished. With less than 1,000 people tucked into its one-square mile, Pine Lake is DeKalb County’s littlest city and among the smallest municipalities in metro Atlanta’s major counties. North Fulton’s Mountain Park counts less than 600 denizens, and Gwinnett’s Rest Haven just 64. Meanwhile, down south, Clayton County’s smallest, Lake City, is a relative metropolis of 2,781 people, per the most recent U.S. Census data.
But Pine Lake is something else. Maybe by virtue of its proximity to Atlanta, just 12 miles west, and those snarling expressways, there’s a feeling of otherworldly detachment to this quiet, eclectic, forested, “micropolitan” place, which has been coined “Arts’ Natural Habitat” and “Little Asheville.”

Three roads lead in, and two out, to this rectangular city laid out in an urban-style grid. Colorful bungalows are interspersed with older ranches and fairytale cottages, alongside midcentury-style creations that defy description and rustic, barn-like habitations. You might see a carousel horse on a front porch and a Mona Lisa window covering on the exterior of the next. In the breeze you’ll hear an inordinate amount of wind chimes. But you won’t find mailboxes, which would discourage folks from catching up down at the post office.
It’s also weird. By design.
As a village that doesn’t float the mainstream, Pine Lake has long been a haven for artists, musicians, writers, poets, academics, graphic designers, LGBTQ couples, and free-spirited retirees who travel the country in vintage, teardrop-shaped trailers parked in so many front yards.
Where else in metro Atlanta can you ask the police chief—a thoughtful, hilarious Brooklyn expat named Sarai Y’hudah-Green who writes existential poetry—to describe her constituency and hear a reply like this:
“It’s like a crazy, 2019 version of Mayberry,” says Green. “I mean, super ramped-up, with guitars and artists and nosey neighbors and super cool freakin’ kids. And a little bit of everybody else. It’s like crazy seasoning salt. Some of everybody. And I’m not even going to tell you that these folks are not—uh—out there.”
Lest we forget the communal nucleus, the 12-acre lake itself.
It’ll play host this weekend to Pine Lake’s main festival, LakeFest, where more than a dozen bands will jam, the food and drink will be plentiful, and the beach will be open for one last swim.
LakeFest started 19 years ago as “a kind of glorified yard sale,” says Pine Lake Mayor Melanie Hammet, whose trio, Cosmic Gospel Hour, will play Sunday at noon, with Herroner on guitar. In discussing the significance of the lake, the mayor gets philosophical, if not a little “out there” herself.
“As a geographic psychology, it’s really fascinating, because what happens is, you enter Pine Lake and drive downhill to the lake,” she explains. “Which means that everything flows down toward the lake emotionally, and in terms of runoff; the impact in every way, it takes you to the lake. That’s one of the reasons our zoning is so environmentally specific. If we were doing like a lot of cities and paving over everything, we’d end up destroying this ecological center of what makes the city amazing. It’s really, really interesting.”
Pine Lake was incorporated as a city in 1937, but for years it’d been marketed as a recreational escape from the “Big City” to the west, a place to camp and plunge off docks and diving boards into cooling lake water. Plots initially sold for less than $70.

The relatively small lots by country standards (20 by 100 feet) helped contribute to a feeling of quaintness. Over time, some parcels were merged together, but most houses remain fairly small, which the mayor says encourages residents to get outside, socialize, and explore.
Explorers these days include legions of kids, which marks a change from the primarily adult population of yesteryear Pine Lake. (Families priced out of intown neighborhoods have uprooted for the city’s more affordable housing stock, says Hammet. A flyer posted for a “cute cottage on a flat lot” on Laurel Road, for instance, markets a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house with quirky charm to spare. The price: $139,900.)

“I can just imagine what it’s like to grow up here,” says the mayor. “The streets are little, and you can walk to your pal’s house, or you can bike to wherever. And another big thing here with the kids—huge—they’re all tree-climbers. You walk down the street and hear this noise, and you look up, and it’s like the tree is infested with kids. It’s great.”
Over the decades, the tents and cabins of Pine Lake weekenders became standalone houses, and permanent residents multiplied. A mayor’s office and city council were formed, alongside a police force that counts three full-time officers today.
Like seemingly everyone else, Chief Green stumbled on Pine Lake by word of mouth from friends or family. She came aboard the police department in 1997, took the helm in 2002, and still cherishes the intangibles that small-town policing affords—the fulfillment, she says, that major metropolitan forces can lack.

“I see kids here that, when they were little, I was chasing them around, trying to get ’em dropped off at school,” says the chief. “Now they come back, want a letter of recommendation for the military. To be able to see things come full circle—you don’t always get that. You get a chance to see the changes. It’s like the difference between turning around a big boat versus a small boat. You feel effective.”
It’s a scorching mid-September evening, and flags in front yards with a snagged trout on them—“Welcome to the Lake”—seem too pooped to flap. But from the lake there’s splashing, and kids chasing each other on a new playground near the restored beach house. A diverse DeKalb citizenry is exercising on trails around the lake, near the butterfly habitat and wetlands. Out in the water, a half-dozen shells shine in the evening light on what’s called Turtle Island, established by Girl Scouts. The birdcalls seem as ubiquitous as porch-side laughter.

As with many topics involving Pine Lake, the mayor laughs at her salary—$3,600 per year, before taxes—and says a palpable sense of humor is a hallmark of her community. When the conversation veers toward conservation and the future in general, however, the laughter subsides.
Pine Lake has two appointed panels—one focused on arts, the other environment. On the latter sits a precocious 12-year-old girl (and devout tree-climber). Getting young constituents involved early, the mayor believes, is key to protecting what makes Pine Lake special.
“I sometimes wonder, you know, you have this city that’s almost like a mom and pop grocery in the land of Amazon. What is the future of a place this size?” says Hammet. “[These] are cities that are never going to contribute to hospitals, or ports, or major road projects. But these places are going to be where the morale of community gets constructed. In times like these, it’s these little places that hold us together.”
