‘Losing Noah’s Ark’: Brazil’s plan to turn the Pantanal into waterway threatens world’s biggest wetland
As the evening sky turns violet, the animals of the Pantanal gather near the water. Capybaras swim in tight formation, roseate spoonbills add smudges of pink to the riverbanks, the rumble of a jaguar pulsates from the forest.
This tropical wetland is the largest on Earth, stretching across Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, and playing host to some of the greatest gatherings of animals anywhere.
Now, scientists say the survival of the entire biome is at risk.
“The Pantanal is like Noah’s Ark. It is home to animals that are disappearing … a place where those at risk of extinction can survive,” says Pierre Girard, a professor at the Federal University of Mato Grosso.
“That could be about to change,” he says. “The Pantanal, as we know it, could soon cease to exist.”
The 170,000 sq km (42m acre) wild expanse harbours one of the world’s most biologically rich environments, with at least 380 species of fish, 580 types of birds and 2,272 different plants. It is one of the main refuges for jaguars and houses a host of vulnerable and endangered species, including giant river otters, giant armadillos and hyacinth macaws.
But plans are under way to revive plans for the Paraguay River, one of the Pantanal’s main arteries, to be turned into an industrial shipping route for crops such as soya beans and sugar.
Political proponents say the waterway would reduce costs and time for exporting agricultural commodities to North America, Europe and Asia but critics warn that its creation – which involves building new ports, possibly straightening bends and meanders, and large-scale dredging – would cause irreversible damage to the wetland and its wildlife.
“It seems a high price to pay: destroying the Pantanal, one of the world’s unique systems, to reduce the price of grain,” says Carolina Joana da Silva, a professor at Mato Grosso State University. “It is a war – a war which risks extinction.”

Ben should have known that it was a set up, that something was wrong. He should have sensed it when the two of them had come down here following a lead that, with hindsight, was too obvious. But he had simply been eager to find the source of these deaths and anyone who knew the hunter was aware that he would stop at nothing to protect innocent lives.
Reaching the top of a set of stairs, Ben took out his firearm and turned to Nick, holding up a hand to him. "Stay here. Shout if you see anything." He whispered the words, giving his partner a small nod and a hint of a kind smile before he turned to walk into the nearby room. His footsteps were light, barely making a sound on the dusty concrete as he moved with skill and a steady hand. Only as he reached the center of the room did anything happen, and by then, it would appear that it was too late. There was movement behind him, but he was too slow, barely turning half way around before he felt something hit him in the head, sending him tumbling to the ground with a thud. Head spinning and blood pooling in his dark hair, Ben tried to turn to fight back, however he found arms wrapping around him, pulling him into the shadows despite his best efforts to struggle.
He heard a voice in his ear, a voice he knew all too well, and instantly his stomach twisted and he made to shout a warning to his partner, but Miguel was quicker. A hand came down over his mouth to silence any cry he could make, the other arm wrapped firmly around his throat as he felt panic rising within him. If there was one twin in here, then that meant...
Outside the room, Carolina waited patiently as she watched the werewolf standing alone. He would pay for what he was, and Ben - in turn - would pay for choosing such a creature over his own family. It was the perfect set up for them both, taking out two problems in one fell swoop. She kept quiet, only readying herself when she noticed the way da Silva perked up, no doubt hearing the struggle from within the room. Miguel had done his part, now it was her turn. Silver bullet loaded, she aimed her gun and fired, however she missed, just clipping the werewolf's arm instead. Still, it would be enough, and she rushed at him with her blade in hand, slamming into him with the hopes that the graze from the bullet would be enough to slow him down.
Unfortunately, it was not a good enough hit, and she soon felt herself being grabbed, slammed against the floor with force enough to wind her.
Eu amo contos.

Capitol-like riots in Brazil reveal alarming truths about U.S. politics
On Jan. 8, 2023, supporters of Brazil’s right-wing former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential offices. Many of them had been camped outside the Brazilian Army headquarters for months in an effort to spur military action that could overturn the results of Brazil’s October 2022 election. In this election, Bolsonaro lost to incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Following Lula’s election, millions of Bolsonaro’s supporters resisted this change of power, claiming that the election was rigged despite the fact that various experts and election officials were saying the opposite. The root of this resistance seems to have come largely from Bolsonaro’s own doing, as he has always been public and open about his belief that Brazil’s election system is fraudulent.
The parallels of this situation are uncanny. Brazil’s riots are eerily similar to those that we saw here in the United States on Jan. 6, 2021. Just like Bolsonaro’s supporters, former President Donald Trump’s advocates attacked the U.S. Capitol in opposition to the result of the 2020 election. The sea of chaotic red, white and blue mirrors the one of green and yellow in Brazil.
Is this a coincidence? Many think not. Trump is one of Bolsonaro’s allies — he has always endorsed Bolsonaro and even described their relationship as one of “great friends.” Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, and other Trump allies have taken an interest in Brazilian politics. Bolsonaro and his son, Eduardo, have attended multiple prominent American conservative conferences; it was Bannon and other American right-wing commentators who continuously encouraged Brazilians to question the results of their country’s election.
In efforts to explain this coincidence, political analysts are pointing to the idea that antidemocratic revolutions are contagious. Unrest leading to more unrest is a pattern in history. An example that resonates with many Americans is the Civil War — when South Carolina seceded from the U.S. in 1860, it led to a domino effect of other states seceding and, ultimately, the Civil War. Political analysts think the contagion of political unrest holds true in the case of Brazil and the U.S., as the similarities of the situations and the relationships between the political actors from both countries are too striking for these occurrences to be unrelated.
Of course, I beg to differ. Though I do believe that there was some influence from political actors in the U.S., I also think it is important to consider the history of Brazil’s government before we draw any solid conclusions. Throughout history, Brazil’s government has often experienced corruption, military takeovers and prosecutions of former presidents.
