“Well, it was Carol’s wedding day. Very moving, actually, seeing as Carol (Cleveland) had been somewhat of a little sister to us all, but especially John (Cleese). During the reception, I nudged Terry (Jones), and pointed at John. He was wiping away tears while he watched Carol walking down the aisle. It wasn’t often you caught John Cleese crying, so this was a bit of a surprise to the other four of us who knew him, present.

We went down to a pub we had hired out, to celebrate the occasion with a few drinks. We noticed Peter (Brett) by himself at the bar, John and Carol had disappeared. Graham (Chapman) went looking for them, and after a while, found them. They were sat outside together, hand in hand, sharing a cigarette. 

‘You looked marvellous today, Carol.’ I overheard John saying to Carol. This was a totally different, more reserved and affectionate side to John none of us had ever seen before. He seemed to be holding back tears, or at least, that was the way I saw it. ‘Are you two alright?’ I asked. 

‘Yes, dear, we’re fine, just needed a bit of a breather, we’ll be back in there soon, it’s a lot to process’, Carol gave us all this and sent us back in. I don’t know what else happened out there, but they soon enough made their way back in to the pub, side by side. Usually, we’d take the mick out of their height difference, but this time, we just couldn’t. Something was up, something was different. John looked like he was putting on a brave face. Carol stayed with him for most of the night, drinking with him rather than her newlywed husband. Why? That’s still a mystery, to us lot, but I suspect he had grown attached to Carol, romantically speaking, of course. I’m not one to make assumptions, though. Don’t tell him that.”
