Gathered together on the island of Juno’s Reach, the city of Boreana is a frequent site of festivals for the Lysarans that call the Queendom home. Boreana houses a temple devoted to the worship of the many Gods of Lysara: Juno, Minerva, Jupiter, Apollo, Neptune, Diana, and more, A Temple of the Twelve.
As tradition, the Lysarans will pay an annual tribute to Neptune, the God of the Seas with various oceanic-inspired tributes.
For a period of one week, politics, work, and legal processes are brought to a close. The Sitters will not convene, Arethusa will not hold court, and the only officials still on duty are the magistrates - charged with keeping the peace.
Overseen by the Vestals, priestesses of the twelve, pilgrimages are made from across Lysara to Boreana, where the people of the Queendom leave offerings in the form of foods traditional to the sea, incense, and gold pieces in the hopes of gaining Neptune’s favour. None more so than sailors and traders, those who’ve snubbed the God have found their fleets shipwrecked, and their wares lost to the tides.
In addition to the rites offered at the temple, food, wine, music, and dancing litter the carnival dedicated to Neptune. As rowdy on the island as it is on the sea, moored boats are decorated and painted for the festival, as floating parties dot the bay.
The “Master of Games,” masked and shrouded in anonymity, opens the ceremonies by raising the sunken competition grounds within the harbour. An expansive forum for competition that appears only once a year. A marvel of Lysaran innovation, the sunken competition grounds were painstakingly crafted below the tides in the Second Age, and remain in use today.
Over the course of the next two weeks we’ll have competitions for the following:
Strength Challenge
Chariot Racing
Gladiator Tournament
Sailing
Diving/Underwater Obstacle Course
Mystery Sport
ooc info
in character it will last from July 200th - July 27th
ooc it will begin today, July 22nd and will last until August 7th
Schedule of events will be posted in the Discord.

I JUST REALIZED WHO THIS GUY’S JAPANESE VOICE REMINDS ME OF
Friggin Muchigoro from the sixth One Piece movie! The random half fish half plant probably some human in there somewhere dude who has a pet giant death goldfish and is generally the cutest man on earth
AND THEN THAT MOVIE INCREDIBLY TRAUMATIZED ME
Seriously i still cannot believe this movie even EXISTS, its such a bizarre form of..like..trolling you into accidentally watching a really good movie??? Posters and preproduction material and the art style and the actual name of the thing = “oh its a cute adventure about everyone playing goofy carnival games on carnival island im sure this villain Baron Carnival will absolutely not jumpscare me with something such as for example a sympathetic comic relief goldfish friend remembering that he’s already dead and reliving the process of drowning again while on dry land and you the viewer have to watch every second of it”
SERIOUSLY FUCKIN HELL I STILL MOURN YOU, MUCHIGORO
This film actually turned out to be a FUCKIN AMAZING lovecraftian horror thing where the Fun And Innocent Carnival Games slowly manipulate our heroes into bickering amoungst each other and pick them off one by one with just the excuse of ‘oh he totally abandoned you he wasnt really your friend after all’ (MEANWHILE THE ADORABLE REINDEER MASCOT IS GASPING FOR AIR AS HE’S PINCUSHIONED BY ARROWS IN THE BACKGROUND)
And then fuckin.. super fancy cute mr baron carnival man is actually sacrificing everyone who loses his carnival games to a fuckin terrifying evil spirit of the forest who’s fused to the flesh of his shoulder and whispering dark thoughts into his very bloodstream. And you get to see a fucked up abomination of twisted human flesh fused into a plant stem while our cute happy-go-lucky protagonist cries out that he has no reason to live now his friends are dead and its like WHAT THE ACTUAL JESUS FUCK IS HAPPENING
Oh and at the same time its SURPRISINGLY DEEP and evil carnival dude has a really sympathetic reason behind it all. You see, EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ISLAND IS DEAD! once upon a time he really was just a goofy cute carnival themed pirate dude with a big ol family of funny buddies. And then they all DIED HORRIBLY and this forbidden hellbeast made a pact with him to ressurect them if he murdered other people in return. Yes, everyone having adorable lil flowers and leafs on their head was DARK FORESHADOWING ALL ALONG
So that gets us back around to this super memorable goddamn character! Poor muchigoro!! he’s just a funny doofus who loves his pet fishie and also apparantly his boss. Like he’s really loyal and hero-worshippy to baron festival mc evilplanman, and baron festival mc evilplanman looks so goddamn GENUINELY FORLORN every damn second theyre together. There’s so many foreshadows where this dude is like ‘ha ha isnt every day wonderful when we’re together, im so happy you all enjoy these funny carnival games i made for you to all never be sad ever again’. *looks like he’s fuckin dying inside* jesus christ seriously are we really doing a plot about a suicidal man who lost everyone he ever loved and now he locks himself up with these fake illusions of what they used to be like, struggling with the fact he knows its wrong to kill others to sustain their life but he loves them so much he just cant stop himself AND WHO SAW THIS COMING FROM GODDAMN GOLDFISH HUGS BEANMAN
So yeah GOLDFISH HUGS BEANMAN is your first mega scarring moment hinting at the dark plot. He almost accidentally tells the heroes about whats going on, since he doesnt actually know he’s dead and ends up stumbling into a gap in his memory. And then the Ominous Forest Sentience just fuckin.. revokes his life permissions. Dude drops dead for getting too close to knowing the truth. Incredibly graphically. And then even worse is that he just reappears again later on, back in comic relief mode and apparantly unable to remember anything. He’s all “haha boss thats so weird i fell asleep on the job! I’m totally fine now tho!” and boss dude is like *bittersweet look* “i’m so glad i cant bear to see you without a smile on your face” *casually glances over the fact he just fuckin fed a guy’s soul to the dessicated corpse of his best friend and he just got back up”
And theres loads of equally depressing stuff with all the other equally adorable buddies!! There’s the ring toss attraction with a trio of adorable tiny elderly folks in funny frog costumes, this weird ice hockey/cooking competition combo game with a big scary buff dude who has a soft spot for bunny hair clips, and A LITERAL TEN YEAR OLD CHILD WHO WAS ALSO AMOUNGST THE DEAD
Oh goddd, Gappa is the one that traumatized me second much next to Muchigoro. He’s a cute kid in a goofy DJ costume but also he seems to be the one whose sense of self has most been eroded by becoming a soul-eating hellbeast? He’s introduced adorably trying to steal the hat of one of the protagonists cos he wants to be all cool fashion, and then suddenly out of nowhere his eyes go red and he murders the dude for saying no. And this wasnt even under orders from the boss dude or anything, boss dude just turns up to find the poor kid still staring off into space like he doesnt know what happened. He fuckin ate a dude’s soul and crushed the skull of his friend who tried to avenge him, and was pincushioned by a bunch of swords and just casually pulled them out of his ribcage. So he’s just sitting there disassociating the fuck out! “What did i just do, why did i do that, why did he cut me and i dont bleed?” And boss guy holds him and comforts him and tells him obvious lies about how he’s..just a very strong kid. He’s just such a great fighter that he totally must have dodged all that guy’s attacks. Don’t worry. And its such a brief scene but you get the sense that this must have happened a million times, the kid keeps accidentally ‘breaking’ people and getting close to realizing he’s a walking corpse and because of his father figure trying to shield him from the realization its just fucking up his mental state even more and he’s become the perfect host for the fuckin EVIL NIGHTMARE FOREST GOD THING
Anyway eventually we get to the final confrontation involving every one of our heroes being soul-nommed except one, and he’s barely able to drag his arrow-riddled body across the battlefield to keep on fighting. And the last you see of all the comic relief corpse dudes is them being confused why they feel so sleepy, and dropping to the floor one by one. You get the sense this whole thing is really fuckin desperate, the boss dude must have been running out of people to feed to the horrifying corpse machine and he’s had to deal with his friends slowly dying around him. And there’s this really messed up moment where all the heroes getting soul-nabbed is presented as a HAPPY MOMENT for the cute comic relief guys. You see them all come back to life and be like ‘yay another perfect day at perfect carnival island with all our very non dead friends!’ And then when the hero finally wins and saves everyone, its punctuated by a depressing note of all the funny dudes simultaneously vanishing into dust forever. leaving behind nothing but a bunch of plants growing out of a pile of empty clothes. Like the scariest damn part is how its left ambiguous whether the creepy ass forest god was even really capable of ressurecting the dead or if it was just puppeting a bunch of dolls and imitating what this man remembers of his dead friends. though the fact they were able to act on their own free will and almost mess up the plan sometimes would imply there’s at least some level of the original person still left there. but still theres also the whole freaky scene of Murder Child Does Not Remember Murdering All These People so..yeah. Horrifying ambiguity.
And then it just ends with poor boss carnival dude looking at his bloodstained hands desperately trying to hold together the dead corpse of this god that promised to keep his friends alive. He fuckin HOLDS INTESTINES IN HIS HANDS WHILE SOBBING! And what super extra sucks is that they dont give him any sort of resolution of getting to move on and atone now he’s free of that thing’s control. He just desperately tries to backstab the hero at the last moment cos he’s just so lost in grief for his friends, and thus ends up dying. And the last you see of him is him floating in the void while he hears the sound of the shipwreck that killed his friends so long ago, and fuckin CUTE VOICE OF FUNNYMAN MUCHIGORO welcomes him to the goddamn afterlife. While crying that he wishes his boss was able to move on without him and live a little longer instead.
END
CUE HAPPY CREDITS MUSIC
CUE EVERYONE IN THE AUDIENCE CRYING FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS
i am sobbing into my keyboard just remembering this, seriously i dont even fuckin LIKE One Piece yet im somehow a giant fan of this one singular filler arc written by some other author. WHERE IS MY ENTIRE DAMN HUNDRED EPISODE ANIME ABOUT THIS PLOTLINE?? it has fuckin NOTHING to do with One Piece either, you coulda replaced the protagonists with the protagonists of any other anime and it woulda worked just as well. Its just like fuckin... Happy Anime Dudes Take A Brief Vacation To An Entirely Different Story About Horror Murder. like i know One Piece does have its own sad and deep stories sometimes but not EXISTENTIAL HORROR OF GOLDFISH FRIENDO
I NEVER EXPECTED TO BE TRAUMATIZED BY THIS ADORABLE BEAN BOY
rip muchigoro
...anyway i suppose i might be subconciously drawn to characters who have anything in common with him cos of the sheer PLEASE UNDO THE HELL YOU INFLICTED UPON THIS FUNNYMANS factor.
also I guess Mr Movien is kinda like his character design upside down. big head mode vs tiny head mode: FIGHT!!!
in conclusion i wish i had not remembered the tears of this

Ginny sighed. “I feel like I’ve monopolized this meeting.”
“You haven’t,” Pauline reassured her.
“Well, you know most of what we’re doing already then, the ride through the Mirror Marsh. Syntax is playing in the town square. We’re using a heart that’s made of holding hands for our charm to represent how we’re working together to save our stable. I wouldn’t trust Jamie Olivetree to cook or bake anything. So, I’m a bit at a loss for that. But I had an idea for a craft. We can do rainbow window decorations. They look like stain glass, but it’s all plastic and markers and glue mixed with paint. Or they can make the kite paper ones, which is kite paper, cardboard and glue, easy peasy.”
“Those sound great.”
“We can choose some other shapes, but really great for the younger members.” Ginny grinned.
“Right,” Lily nodded. “We need to cater to them too other than making them hyped up on sugar.”
“Oh god, do we have so much sugar on this list,” Pauline groaned. “Ladies, we better string this out.”
There was more laughter.
“Okay, so, bear with me,” One of the girls said. “Since you don’t trust Jaime to bake. I went to this other summer camp last year, and it was a sleep away camp where you took different skill classes and had dinner in the dining hall.”
“Why can’t we do that here?” One of the girls asked.
“But they had this one dessert that was essentially rainbow marshmallows and chocolate. They took the marshmallows, mixed them with chocolate that wasn’t hot enough to melt them, and then shaped it in like a yule log or put it into aluminum foil boxes with parchment paper and added more chocolate until it was full. Then they cut them into slices. They called them stainglass windows. So, not only do you have something that goes with your craft, you don’t have to have Jaime do anything.”
Ginny groaned. “I could kiss you. Yes. We’ll take it.”
“Okay, that leave us, I guess,” Kelsey said. “We’re using the Celtic Infinity Knot for our symbol.”
“Mr. Wetton has found you a Celtic Group.”
“We’ll have them perform out by the spooky big tree,” Kelsey said. “Now, Madison had an idea, and it’s a good one to run with the Welshies as part of our event.”
“Well, that’s really cool, actually.” Penny said.
“And, we have a huge beach thing, it goes from the Hermit’s house, all the way over to the other side of the Peninsula that goes up near the tree.” Kelsey rubbed her forehead. “So, we thought, a race? We can make it a group race like the Jorvik Stable’s race.”
They all nodded.
“That’s fair,” Josefina said.
“We should have more than one group race,” Pauline made a note of it.
“And we’re doing these rainbow swirl cookies that look like lollipops, rainbow cotton candy, rainbow churros, and rainbow shaved ice with ice cream in the middle.”
Madison is taking this seriously,” Cathy said, her voice very dry.
“Of course she is,” Ingrid said with a smile. “She’s young.”
“We haven’t talked anyone into the Highland Cattle yet. But I think we’re getting there.” Kelsey said. “Not that anyone is really going to listen to us until something horrible happens. I mean, we helped them with their shipwreck but that got us trust and a spot on the peninsula, nothing more.”
“Craft,” Cathy glowered at her.
“Oh right, the craft.”
“We’re going to have Seashells you can paint,” Cathy said. “It’s been keeping everyone busy and with us on the beach, Mr. Anwir refuses to come close.”
“So, we’re going to have sharpies and rubbing alcohol for the kids, some puffy paint for the intermediate painters, and alcohol inks for the experts.” Kelsey grinned. “They can turn them into necklaces, bracelets, earrings, headbands, whatever makes them happy.”
Cathy jumped in. “Hugh is happy to have people come and give tours of the Rescue Ranch.”
“Oh thank goodness, we don’t want to bother him too much.”
“He thinks it’s great publicity.”
Pauline shifted in her chair. “Okay, I have one last idea. I know it’s not Happy Horse Week but it will be a taste of it.”
Lily raised a brow at her.
“Every one of us has a paddock. New Hillcrest can borrow the Dew Farm in Epona’s if necessary,” Pauline said. “I think we should have a special event in the paddocks specifically for the horses, and only the horses of our stables. It can be a show jumping event or a dressage event or a show type of event where they jog their horses around to show them off.”
“Oh, Pony flag race!” Polly piped up. “I’ve been wanting to do one of those and with the bunting for the day this would be perfect. Have seven flags in each color and they have to go and get them and come back one at a time.”
“Tedious but give enough experience or one of Lowe’s exchanges, they’ll do it.”
“Or lots of experience and an exchange item,” Amelia said. “This is a good idea. I like it, oui.”
Loretta grimaced at her phone. “What is taking them so long?”
“What is taking us so long?” Pauline rubbed her forehead and checked her notes.
Lily texted Regina. “Ohkay, they’re arguing in the store. Just send us some options. Yeesh.”
Phones buzzed as Regina threw them all into a group chat and uploaded pictures.
“Okay those half circle buntings we need for the races.”
“Same for the triangle ones that are the stripes, not the solids. We’ve got solids already,” Kate said.
“We should have the solid ones for the pony race,” Penny added as she texted that into the chat.
“All right, I’m seeing 2 foil balloons here.”
“Why not make the fuzzy ombre ones for the parade route and Moorland’s festival space, they’ll go with the bows and the ombre sequin bunting swags there,” Pia said. “And then the hard stripe ones for everywhere else.”
“You’re the only one who has seen these bows.” Lily reminded her.
Pia dug into her phone and uploaded a picture into the group chat.
“Ah, yes, agreed,” Pauline said as she added it to the list. “The arches need something more than ivy.”
“Streamers, these ones here have some great circle paillettes with them, tres chic,” Josefina double tapped it. “Mix it in with the ivy, it won’t be as noticeable or bright.”
“And might make the inside more of a rainbow as the sun goes through it.”
“I hope we don’t have rain,” one of the girls groaned.
“Oh, we can use the clouds with the dangling rainbow hearts to hang from the trees,” Ami brightened. “That would be pretty. They’re plastic, so reusable even if it does rain.”
“And the heart shaped garland for the stable fronts, and inside too.”
Josefina shuddered. “This could get so tacky very quickly.”
“Okay, then what about those big hearts in the solid colors that are studded with pearls? I think those are pearls.”
“They can go on building doors and along fences.”
They nixed some of the other options including a long fabric rainbow bunting and hearts that were rainbow from the inside out. They were hard on the eyes.
“And, that’s, that’s actually kind of nice,” Loretta said grudgingly of the backdrop. They’d done it up in Bobcat colors with a light pink curtains right behind a white circle that had yellow roses on the upper right and pink heart shaped crystal beads draped across it. To either side of the light pink curtains were darker more Bobcat pink curtains.
In the chat, someone use a confetti trumpet emoji. There were hearts and happy faces.
Lastly, they sent a display of cloud lanterns they could put inside the stables and covered areas. They had LED Lights hanging down. They could get them in rainbow colors. Or one of the girl’s noted, they could do the hearts like the smaller plastic clouds they thought would be good in the trees.
“Okay, I know everyone has a big cache of the LED lanterns with the heart cut outs, so might as well use them.”
“No candles.”
“Not unless they’re LED candles.”
They all looked at each other. “Yeah, no,” one said.
“We need a piñata,” someone murmured.
“Where? Fort Pinta?”
“If Madison finds out,” Kelsey warned.
“Let’s do a bunch in Fort Pinta for the kids there, we have to vary this up!”
“Between Mr. Peanut posing for photos, Isebell Figg doing street magic, and Pinatas it will be something of a carnival.” Pia said with a smile.
“Which is exactly what Madison wants,” Kelsey groaned. She rubbed her face.
They all looked at each other and shrugged.
“Jugglers, fire eaters.”
“Yeah, we’re getting into circus stuff now,” Lily said.
“Don’t tell Ydris,” someone muttered.
“Don’t tell Madison about Ydris. He’d turn her into a monkey in a tutu so fast,” Lily said.
They all giggled at that image.
Loretta and Tan swallowed hard. The other girls didn’t actually mean to dig, but they felt it like a dig at them.
“I don’t think that would be good around the horses anyways, fire eaters and jugglers.”
“Definitely not.”
“You have a huge moor to take up,” Lily said with a shrug.
Kelsey shook her head. “I think we’ve bitten off enough.”
Pauline shoved the list over to Lily. It’d been written across a map of the area.
“I agree,” Lily said after she read it over. “Okay, honestly, this calls for celebratory food.”
“I’ll go order some pizza.”
“You know, Courtney doesn’t make half bad chicken wings and those double baked potatoes.”
“Just,” Lily pushed it away and put her head in her arms.
“Ice cream,” Pauline patted her head. “Definitely ice cream.”
A couple of them laughed and ran out to order food. When the phones buzzed, the rest left leaving Loretta and Lily alone.
Loretta fidgeted. “How long are you going to treat me with so much disrespect?”
Lily looked up and straightened. Her brows rose noticing everyone else was missing, including Tan. “The thing about respect. You have to earn it.”
Loretta pursed her lips.
“You and your girls treated us like dirt and expected us to do all the hard labor.”
“You were trying out for the Club. It’s expected.”
Lily rolled her eyes. “Loretta, everything around you is for beginners. It’s not that difficult. You didn’t treat us with respect. So, we left. If you want to be friends, be friendly.”
Loretta wasn’t the type to slump in her seat.
“You going to treat Jojo Siwa like the rest of us or am I going to have to assign an ambassador?”
“No. She’s somebody.”
Lily leaned back and stared at the ceiling. “Oh, where do I start with that one?”
Loretta huffed. “You’re all nobody.”
“You don’t know that,” Lily dropped her chin back down to meet Loretta’s eyes. “You have no idea who anyone of us could be. We could be as rich as Anne Von… whatever her name is or royalty or anything because we don’t tell you.”
Loretta scoffed. “If any of you were rich and famous, I’d know.”
“There are a lot of rich people who aren’t famous and don’t want to be,” Lilly rubbed the back of her neck. “Treating everyone the same is really, the only way to go about it. You can’t make snap judgement, especially when Thomas is handing everyone the same uniform the first day.”
Loretta rolled her eyes.
“To us, you’re nobody,” Lily said bluntly. “The mean girl with the crush on her employer’s son.”
Loretta stiffened and glared at her.
Lily shrugged a shoulder. “Calling it like I see it, Lori.”
“I was here first.”
“And you’re a backwater club, at a backwater summer camp, where you can lord your superior riding skills over campers with none at all,” Lily raised her brows. “I don’t think anyone else would put up with you and your airs.”
Loretta tensed.
The door opened and the others came back with food.
Lily didn’t know what it was going to take to get through to the other girl. They just needed this Rainbow Week to go well and for Loretta to try not and take all the credit.
--
There were piles and piles of boxes in the courtyard of the Silverglade Equestrian Center. “The Siwanators bogged us down with tons of bows. They’ve been busy. Like a two person assembly line,” Regina said. “Productive meeting?”
Lily sat on the boxes. “Outside of Loretta, yeah.”
“What did she do now?”
“She wants respect.” Lily shrugged.
Linn jogged over. She leaned over putting her hands on her knees. “So, the Baroness wants to see us at the Riding Arena.”
Lily met Regina’s eyes. “No more long meetings.”
They mounted their horses and trotted down to the Riding Arena. Baroness Silverglade stood out of the way in the show jumping side of the arena. The slightest twist of her lips could convey a multitude of emotions.
Right now they were slightly turned downward. Slightly pursed. The Baroness wasn’t pleased.
Lily approached with caution. “Baroness Silverglade,” she said.
“Tell me, Lily, will this do for the fine upstanding reputation of the Silverglade family?” She gestured at the arena.
Lily glanced around at the showjumping arena. “Not when we have distinguished visitors coming,” she said it quite carefully.
The Baroness met her eyes and walked serenely out of the Arena.
Lily braced her elbow on one hand and cupped her face. Her lips pressed together and she restrained several screams by making exaggerated faces.
“Well,” Regina said. “Well.”
Lily spun on her toe and marched to the other side of the Arena. While, the huge space didn’t have jumps set up in it, it was being used by a group of dressage riders as they practiced their formations.
Lily worked her jaw licking her lips, her mouth opening and shutting.
“I see an underutilized space,” Regina said.
“We need a schedule,” Pauline said.
Lily gestured at her. It was a clear ‘get it done’ type of hand wave.
Regina put her arm around Lily. “Okay, I think you need a break. You’re taking far too much responsibility on yourself.”
“A nap,” Linn said. “Go ahead and take a nap, Lily. When you wake up, we’ll have a schedule arranged to get everything done before Rainbow Week.”
Lily looked between them and cracked. “Are you two sure?”
“Yes, we’re sure,” Pauline said. “All three of us. Delegation will get things done faster.”
Lily hugged each other mumbling thank yous. She jogged off and took the trailer back to the stable, even though it really wasn’t that far away.
Regina, Pauline, and Linn looked at each other.
“Let’s do this thing,” Pauline said firmly.
Linn pulled out her phone.
“We’re going to either have to kick everyone out, or clean at night,” Regina said looking around. “Wow, you just don’t think about how many people are wandering about all the time.”
“Linda thinks we should meet in the library,” Linn reported.
“This is one meeting right after another,” Pauline shook her head.
They rode through the gardens back up the main house marveling at the amount of work they’d actually gotten done. The manor was well on its way to being spectacular. The workman of the tunnel waved at them as they threaded through the trees to go up the road for a bit.
They put their horses in the stalls and gave Lily’s an extra pat or two as they passed.
Linda, Agnetha, and the rest of the club met them in the library.
Pauline sat at the head of the table and heaved a huge sigh. “Right. So, the Baroness has just shoved the refurbishment of the Riding Arena into our laps. We need a plan on how to tackle this so everything gets done in time for the Rainbow Festival.”
Linda adjusted her glasses. “Girls, we have done a prodigious amount of work over the last month in order to make this place remotely presentable. I can talk to the Baroness about putting off the Riding Arena until after the Rainbow Festival.”
“We have a week,” Regina said. “I think if we have a structured plan in place, break things up into groups like we did in the beginning, we can get everything done. It’s Lily is taking a lot of this personally.”
“She’s got all the emotional labor problems too,” Abigail leaned in propped her chin on her hands. “That’s as much work as physical labor.”
“And we’ve all been focusing on the garden since we’ve got contractors doing the work for the Ice Cream bar and the tunnel. Aaron and Anastasia are focused on getting people hired. So, maybe we gave a false impression of how much we can actually do in a set amount of time.” Pauline winced. “Which is on us.”
“Right. This is vacation and you’re working as hard as you would in school,” Linda protested. “You’re supposed to be here to have fun and meet everyone in the county and ride through the races to train your new horses.”
“Right, we have to make them worth 75,000 shillings somehow.” Regina said flippantly.
Agnetha frowned. “Linda’s correct. Annabella and I have been taking dreadful advantage of you girls.”
“We volunteered,” Pauline pointed out.
Brittany nodded. “Something weird is going on here in South New Jorvik County. We don’t know what it is, neglect, the G.E.D., Dark Core interference, whatever it is, but something fishy is going on here. I mean, is the place just poor or what?”
Linda grimaced. “I’m not really from around here either. Alex Cloudmill hails from Jorvik City, so she doesn’t know either.”
Agnetha shrugged. She didn’t know either.
“Well, let’s work on what we can control,” Regina said pushing the worries about G.E.D. and Dark Core aside to work with another day.
“We need to finish the Folly Gardens,” Pauline said.
“Set up the event Pavilion. Clean up and plant gardens around the Pavilion and the Riding Arena. Install Lighting, benches and urn features.”
“Install the last Duck Coop behind the Arena.”
“Clean the Arena. Replace the Jumps in the Show Jumping side.” Linn said. “They’re old and they don’t fit the theme anymore.”
“Clean the tunnel once the workers are finished.”
“Clean and install furniture in the Wine Cellar. Decorate the Wine Cellar.”
“Decorate for Rainbow Week,” Regina said.
“And that has to be enough for now,” Linda said.
“We should get some of those window sun catchers and decorations from Riley and Ginny for the Arena,” Pauline muttered.
“Since we have the only arena.”
“Oh, well,” Pauline’s eyes lit up. “Ginny and Susan are going to try and convince Mr. Kemball to build them an arena.”
They all stared at each other for a moment, huffed, and burst into giggles.
“Linda,” Linn started with a quiver to her voice, “Can we shut down the Riding Arena to fix it? We can put it off until the last two days if we must, since I’m sure we’re going to want a full day to decorate right before Rainbow Week begins.”
“I mean, this isn’t Christmas where we decorate two months in advance,” Stacy said offhandedly.
Linda smiled softly. “I’ll make a sign that it will be closed those days for cleaning and refurbishing.”
“Thank you!” Linn slumped.
“Okay,” Pauline said as she fiddled with the schedule. “We’ve got seven days or whatever. Tomorrow we can do a huge push to finish the last terrace. Day two, clean up the Pavilion and Riding Arena space, install lighting, benches, duck coop, and the urns. Day Three: Set up the Pavilion, plant the gardens. Day Four, Clean up the tunnel and do the Wine Cellar. Day Five, whatever isn’t done. Day Six, Riding Arena Clean Up and Refurbishment. Day Seven: Decorate.”
Linda nodded. “That sounds reasonable.”
“And you’ve got yourselves a slush day.”
“Then we take the week off to ride all around the county and have fun,” Regina said firmly.
“Get sick on cotton candy at South Hoof,” Pauline mused. “Do a treasure hunt in Cape West.” Pauline blinked. “Oh right,” she found a paper and slid it over to Linda. “Our schedule of events things to do if you want to put it up online.”
Linda brightened. “That will be great. We can have so many visitors. Get your friends to send me pictures for Jorvikgram. I’ll get this up on the website. You know, I don’t think there’s an actual county website for events.”
“Then there should be,” Stacy said.
“And if you build it, you need to get paid for it,” Regina added on.
“And by the good and fluffly lord, do not let Aaron moderate it,” Pauline rolled her eyes.
“Or Anastasia,” one of the girls said under her breath.
“Now,” Agnetha glared at them. “The rest of you go join Lily and get some rest. Everything will keep until tomorrow.”
“Don’t work you and Bjorn to death without us!” One of the girl’s admonished her.
Agnetha gave her a tiny smile.
It was weird, but somehow through working together, Agnetha had become like their prickly aunt.
Linda poked at her phone. She never noticed the rest of them leave.
FOR THE ACCOMPANYING IMAGES PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE MY WATERMARK AND CONTACT INFORMATION. THANK YOU. I get it. Some of you might get excited and want to see this stuff in the game, especially the clothes, tack, and pets. However, the only way I want to see this in the game is if I get paid for it. If I see it in the game and I’m not paid for it, there will be hell to pay. You think I’m salty. I’d be angry. Personally, I’m not going to send this info to SSO. If you do, leave my contact information there! Don’t give them any excuses to steal.
Now, I’ll know you haven’t read this note if you leave me comments about how ‘salty’ I am about the game and if I hate it so much I should do something else. I am doing something else. It’s called Mystic Riders MMORPG Project. Mystic Riders however is a very baby phase game. You can check out our plans on the game dev blog. (Skills, Factions, Professions, Crafting, Mini-Games, 25+ horse breeds!) If you know anyone who would be interested and has money or contacts about game making, direct them to the blog.

Ptown Gears Up For Inclusive Summer Fun
It’s September in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the cool-crisp calm before the bitter-cold calm: wintertime, when travelers admire the cozy Cape Cod resort town’s frosted beauty beside a fireplace inside a cabin. The iced rich-blue Provincetown Harbor to the southeast, Cape Cod Bay to the south and west, Massachusetts Bay to the northwest and north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the northeast catch peeks of sunshine that the boys of summer cannot enjoy until they eagerly return again.
After a long stretch of hibernation, those boys fly or ferry back to the island, beach-ready. When temps reach a desirable enough high (60 degrees is fine), they rush over in droves to one of the hottest gay vacation getaways to partake in the reason for the season: pool parties. They are reunited with direct sun, gyrating porn stars, unicorn floats and Mr. Turk speedos.
A luxury resort owned and run by three gay men who are partners in business and life, Thomas Walter, David Sanford and Ken Masi, the Brass Key Guesthouse has established itself as a home away from home for LGBTQ (and sometimes straight, married) vacationers. For the town’s biggest party, Carnival Week, last year at the Brass Key, held as a benefit for the Provincetown Business Guild, everything that might restrain pool-goers’ pure water fun – tables, lounge chairs – was stashed away to accommodate a line so long it looped around the block. A couple hundred attendees splashed and romped around in the pool, riding their gay floats, sipping their festive margs.
It’s busy. How busy? Because of shampoo and “whatever else,” “the water’s not so clear” at the end of the day, said Walter, sitting in a quiet, conversational nook near the pool where, come 1 p.m. Aug. 19, adult video star Trenton Ducati will greet sunbathers with a smile and a bulge. (Ducati will meet-and-greet guests and visitors inside the Shipwreck Lounge, a laid-back bar that also serves as the Brass Key’s check-in lobby.)
Nestled within the Brass Key’s 43 rooms and suites, housed in nine buildings, is an enchanting, flower-filled playground: the heated infinity-edge outdoor pool, a sizable 15-person hot tub, with rows of poolside recliners for ogling nearby frolickers (there’s even a small nudist section if you prefer an even, full-body tan). Within the pool area is an inviting communal patio, where every day at 9 a.m. I stepped down from my pleasantly new-old upstairs room and enjoyed a hot, hearty breakfast; at 5 p.m., I sipped wine and overindulged on hearty spreads of artisan cheese set up for happy hour.

A room at the Brass Key
Guests will say hi. They might pull up a seat. This happened to me; as a lone traveler, I greatly relished their amiable company. I met a polite and self-effacing gay guy and his spunky gal pal, a lovely gay couple who invited me on their afternoon bike-riding excursion into town, some chatty lesbian wives, and a manager of a nearby boarding house known for its bathhouse-type appeal who took a late-night dip in the hot tub with me. His budget lodge is far from a resort, and he said he really loves their jacuzzi. In Provincetown, everyone is dreaming the same dream.
Brass Key is just steps from Commercial Street, Ptown’s main drag, lined with art galleries, clothing boutiques, trendy restaurants and glimpses of the bluest of water. Like clockwork, the ever-popular Tea Dance, the town’s outdoor gay dance party, begins at 4 p.m. and runs through 7 p.m. at the Boatslip Beach Club (beginning May 3).
Charming, right? Walter and Sanford, who met in their senior year of high school, thought so too. Even though Fire Island was closer, they would occasionally leave New York, where they were living, to head to Ptown. “We were just drawn to Ptown,” Walter said. “We just fell in love.”
They envisioned themselves living there one day, but thought it a long shot. “It was always a pipe dream,” Walter said. But when they eyed a corner property, the Dusty Miller Inn, on Bradford Street, their hearts were set on owning it. Aware of their interest, their friend Adam left a message on their answering machine: the current owners of the guesthouse at the time were willing to sell, he told them. In 1998, Walter and Sanford officially became the owners of the property, now called Crowne Pointe Historic Inn & Spa (Masi would join them as a proprietor in 2007).
Their quaint sprawl comprises six buildings, including the full service Shui Spa, one of two spas in the country exclusively using Kiehl’s products, and The Pointe Restaurant. Named one of “The Best Hotel Restaurants in Cape Cod” by Fodor’s Travel, the pier-to-plate restaurant impresses with a modern, premier dining experience and a full wine bar.
Across the street is the Brass Key, a property they bought in 2008 (altogether, Walter said they own “around 20” buildings in Ptown, including the Provincetown Pet Resort). Unit by unit, the owners gutted the Brass Key’s buildings to modernize their “grandma” look, adding luxury suites and the Shipwreck. Now, the property is coastal chic, but still of another time. Walter calls it “historically hip.” With big hand-carved headboards and antique furniture, “each building has its own identity,” he said.
“Ken and I were saying it was closed off and known as the place rich old men would stay and it’s not friendly,” Walter said. “We worked really hard to change that culture and change that perception.” On Shipwreck’s patio, a giant fire pit sizzles, occupied by a small crowd of diverse, friendly blend minglers. The non-guests look on through the gate, curious of what dreaminess and late-night debauchery awaits.
Inside the bar, Masi or Walter sometimes tend bar, because if you own a business, everything is your responsibility. As a business developer for a major entertainment TV giant (he said he’s unable to mention the company by name, per their request), Walter wore many hats, involving marketing, accounting and creative ventures, which offered him insight when it came to running his own business. Staying in a variety of hotels, he said, is where he learned hospitality dos and don’ts.
As for Sanford, his engineering background aids in maintaining the physical plan and overseeing renovations and maintenance, while Masi, a Duke grad who Walter calls “chameleon-like,” was an editor for Boating magazine and does promo and website writing for their properties. He said their day-to-day is wildly unpredictable.
One late night during my visit, Walter was handling a diabetic guest who wasn’t responsibly managing his alcohol intake (he sent a pizza to the man’s room); the next morning Walter was checking on – and, naturally, playing with – the dogs at their pet resort. “Because there’s three of us, we’re able to divide and conquer,” he said. “David always thinks of the business as a cruise ship: I’m the captain and my job is to just get the cruise ship from one place to another.”
Their operation is fine-tuned, their dream realized. The three of them split their time between two gay-friendly places, Fort Lauderdale and Ptown. Walter said Ptown “is not necessarily a gay town; it’s a town where being gay is a non-issue; it’s not even really considered; it’s not even a factor in town politics.”
“It’s a town where sexual orientation is a non-issue, which is unique and special,” he emphasizes, “and one of the things that drew us to it.”
For this reason, my new Ptown friends Jay and Alan return to Brass Key every year. They love it in September, just as the party winds down and solitude sets in. I loved it then too.
One early afternoon, we walked the magnificent breakwater, a mile-long stretch of granite boulders, snapping photos of each other as we trekked through scattered brush and the damp low-tide bed, bound for the lighthouse near the shore of Herring Cove Beach. They kindly treated me to dinner at Mistralino Ristorante on our last night.
After we finished our meal, we laughed some hearty laughs over more wine on the porch of the two-level Brass Key suite they book every year. For one night, we were all experiencing the same magic of a shared dream in the wine-drenched stillness rendered by our postcard-perfect surroundings.

The Nyetimber Dorset Seafood festival (free entry, 13-14 July) on Weymouth harbour has nearly 100 stalls serving fishy dishes such as popcorn cockles, hot pollack dogs, brown crab bhajis and cuttlefish croquettes. There are demonstrations by chefs including Mitch Tonks and Mark Hix, masterclasses on filleting, barbecuing and crab prep, a family show about sea turtles – and lots of English sparkling wine.
Later in the summer, the Lymington Seafood festival (free entry, 10-11 August) in Hampshire has live soul, jazz and blues. The Moveable Feast (£3, 13 July, Porthmadog, 27 July, Llandudno, 17 August, Benllech and 24 August, Amlwch) is a travelling food festival in north-west Wales with local producers, brewers and distillers, plus craft stalls and live music. In the Isles of Scilly, intrepid diners can attend a barbecue in the middle of the sea: twice a year, the tides recedes to reveal a sandbar between Tresco and Bryher, usually hidden under 20ft of water. This summer the Low Tide Event (free entry, 1 September) also features a gin bar, paella stand and rock’n’roll band.
Cinema
Luna Beach Cinema, Brighton
Big screens on the sands are a growing trend. This year, the Luna Beach Cinema is back in Brighton with recent releases (Bohemian Rhapsody, Mamma Mia! Many have heard of Cowes Week (10-17 August) but there are lots of lesser-know regattas around the UK that make a great day out. As well as the yachting races, Salcombe Regatta in Devon features a sandcastle competition, an ice-cream-eating contest, a harbour swim and a firework display (mainly free, 3-10 August). The Gara Rock hotel is hosting the closing party (£30, 10 August). Maritime
Charlestown Harbour, Cornwall
Charlestown Harbour, the Unesco-listed Georgian harbour in Cornwall where Poldark is filmed, is holding its first Classic Sail festival this summer. Highlights include a “parade of sail” as tall ships enter the harbour, live music from the British folk band Mad Dog Mcrea and pirate-themed activities for children, plus the chance to visit one of Europe’s biggest shipwreck museums (mainly free, 30 August-1 September). The Great Yarmouth Maritime festival on South Quay has visiting ships to go aboard, three stages of folk musicians and sea shanty singers, street theatre and maritime skills demonstrations (mainly free, 7-8 September). Tarbert in Argyll and Bute holds 10 festivals a year, including a Traditional Boat festival, when vessels from Scotland and Ireland visit the harbour, including a two-masted gaff-rig cutter built in 1903 (mainly free, 20-21 July).
Music
Tunes on the Sands, Blackpool
There’s no need to jet off to Croatia to find a music festival on the beach – there are plenty in the UK. Tunes on the Sands (day tickets from £44, weekend tickets from £97, camping £45pp, 12-14 July) is a new festival on Blackpool Sands in Devon, a sister festival to May’s Tunes in the Dunes on Perranporth beach in Cornwall. The inaugural Sands lineup includes Wet Wet Wet, the Hoosiers and KT Tunstall; there is a big top with circus activities, a silent disco, a gin terrace, a cocktail bar and street food.
The Victorious festival (from £35/£110/£130, 23-25 August) in Portsmouth is right next to the beach and has a seaside stage – headliners are Two Door Cinema Club, Rudimental and New Order. Sand Fest (£50, 14 July) on Sandbanks beach in Poole, Dorset, features top DJs and live acts including Chase & Status.
Other sports
British Beach Sports Champs, Branksome Chine Beach, near Bournemouth
Britain’s beaches are hosting exciting spectator sports over the summer. There are more than 70 beach volleyball events around the UK, and elite players can be seen in action in the Grand Slam Series (free, 13-14 July, Bridlington; 27-28 July, Weymouth and 17-18 August, Bournemouth). Sand Polo, the British Beach Polo Championships, is at Sandbanks in Poole. Tickets include entry to the afterparties on the beach (from £30 one day/£55 two, 12 and 13 July).
The British Beach Sports Champs take place on Branksome Chine beach, near Bournemouth. As well as beach handball, now in its seventh year, the 2019 event includes beach netball for the first time (£10, 2-4 August). This year’s Beach Rugby Wales tournament in Swansea Bay will feature 54 teams from all over the UK. Welsh, Irish and New Zealand national players have appeared in previous tournaments (free, 3 August).

Voyage to the Center of the World
The peaks of Mount Parnassus shimmered on a warm spring afternoon above the temples of ancient Delphi. In a verdant valley below, silver-tipped olive trees stretched to the sea. The sun traced a golden arc in the azure sky. On a flat plateau surrounded by this natural theater, I looked up to find myself standing at the center of the world.
At least, the center of all things as the ancient Greeks knew it. In front of me was a black ovoid stone, known as the omphalos, set on the spot in Greek mythology where two eagles loosed by Zeus crossed paths at the earth’s nexus. It marked Delphi as one of the greatest enigmas of the ancient universe.
I had come for what was supposed to be an afternoon visit during a recent trip to Athens. Delphi is best known as the home of the famous Oracle — a powerful priestess who saw the future of kings and nations — and I wanted at least a glimpse of the mystery before pressing ahead with my travels.
But as I stood on the archaic plateau, I was riveted. The broken columns of once-mighty altars rose like spirits in the pure air. A timeworn stadium and a prodigious stone amphitheater reigned silently over the mountain. The Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle dispensed her cryptic prophecies, was ringed with paths trod by truth-seekers who had labored up the steep valley from the Corinthian Gulf.
Clearly, taking in this soul-stirring experience would need time — as much time as I could afford to give.
While most travelers tend to use Athens as their base for seeing Greece’s classical highlights, reversing those roles, and choosing Delphi as an exploratory hub for a multiday tour, can bring unexpected rewards. After all, for ancient visitors, Delphi was the trip of a lifetime.
A Unesco World Heritage site, Delphi alone merits a full day to wander the extensive marble ruins and the fine Archaeological Museum of Delphi showcasing sublime sculptures, delicate friezes and other excavated gems. A second day can be spent touring mythological caves and springs during a birdsong-filled hike in Delphi’s lush forests.
The town of Delphi, with terraced hotels, rustic tavernas and sunning cats, is a charming and convenient base. It has uninterrupted views over the immense valley of ancient olive trees, the largest grove in all of Greece, to the azure waters of the Corinthian Gulf.
You can get to the gulf in less than half an hour by car. But that drive should be turned into a third full day of discovery, visiting scenic villages that antiquity’s travelers would have passed on their way to Delphi from the gulf. In springtime, the villages bolt to life with Carnival festivals celebrating pagan customs.
Ancient Delphi is a short bus ride or a pleasant walk from town. A wide road hemmed in by pines, laurels and cypresses leads to the entrance and up toward the Sacred Way — the path taken by King Oedipus, Alexander the Great, the Roman Emperor Nero and countless ordinary men and women determined to hear the Oracle’s pronouncements.
With Apollo’s priestess as the main attraction, Delphi’s renown grew as Greece’s wealthy city states, and powerful conquerors, built sumptuous treasuries filled with rich offerings to encourage the sun god to favor them in war and politics. Many paid tribute to victories gained through the Oracle’s guidance — and Apollo’s help — with grandiose sculptures, including a giant silver bull and a replica of the Trojan Horse.
Despite the ancient bling, Delphi’s supremacy as a sacred power center was epitomized by the simple stone omphalos that had riveted me during my visit — what the Greeks called the “navel of the world.” While the temples have crumbled, seeing the omphalos gave me goose bumps, and left me awe-struck over Delphi’s sublime place in history.
At the top of the Sacred Way, the Temple of Apollo, now razed to its foundations, greeted visitors with these wise words: “Know Yourself,” and “Nothing in Excess.” Inside, the Oracle, a woman older than 50, would sit entranced over a crack in the earth answering questions. A centuries-old debate still rages over whether her divine inspiration came from an ether-like vapor formed by an ancient water source, the nearby Castilian Spring.
Whatever the truth, visitors can explore the remains of the spring in a rocky crag near the Delphi museum, an archaeological time capsule whose centerpiece is an exquisite, life-size bronze statue from 475 BC known as the Charioteer. With flowing robes, gems for eyes and regal poise, this masterpiece by an unknown artist embodies the mystery of Delphic lore.
The next day should be spent visiting the Corycian Cave, an obligatory stop for ancient supplicants after encountering the Oracle. A three and a half-hour trek (each way) from the ruins, this sanctuary for the nature god Pan dates to the neolithic era. The hike starts above Delphi’s marble amphitheater and winds through lovely pine forests. At each turn, there are outstanding views over the ancient site. In hot summer months, those preferring not to sweat it out can also drive.
After a long day, it’s essential to refuel at a traditional Delphi taverna. To Patriko Mas, with a stunning position overlooking the valley, is a lively gathering spot offering charcoal-grilled meat and fish, as well as roast peppers, stuffed mushrooms and other vegetarian fare.
Head out the following day to explore the path that ancient visitors took to get to the Sacred Way. This should be done in reverse order, starting in Delphi and ending with dinner at Galaxidi, a charming fishing village on the Corinthian Gulf.
I left Delphi by car and headed down the mountain to Chrisso, a once-powerful city-state that dates to the 12th century B.C. Now a small stone village, Chrisso sparkles with tiny churches and water gurgling through granite gutters from a spring sourced in Mount Parnassos. Locals divert the water to their gardens to grow a local treat — baby vegetables, which are candied in sugared syrup. These should be sampled with a strong Greek coffee at one of the tavernas in the central square.
I continued toward the cliffside town of Amfissa, a prominent citadel in Delphic times. Named for Apollo’s lover, it had its own Acropolis and a stretch of Cyclopean walls. Today, old ladies wearing kerchiefs and crocheted skirts navigate the road with canes and a slow step.
A castle was built atop the ancient wall during Ottoman rule, with a view of the valley. When I visited, the almond trees were in bloom. Slow-moving honey bees filled the air with a low hum and the sweet perfume of nectar. Nearby, an old tannery is said to be protected by the spirit of a youth whose quest for love ended in tragedy. In spring, the villagers put on a raucous nighttime carnival in his honor, dressed as ghosts and fairies with elaborate masks and animal bells.
Pause to sample local wines, cheeses and olives at Megalo Kafeneio 1929, a converted theater house with a dusty 1930s décor in Amfissa’s main square. Then continue, as I did, toward Itea, a modern port located next to the ancient harbor of Kirra, where far-flung travelers disembarked to start their journey to see the Oracle.
Today international cruise ships disgorge crowds onto tour buses that make a beeline for Delphi. At a clutch of tavernas on the waterfront, locals nibble freshly caught shrimp and anchovies with a shot of raki in the Corinthian Gulf’s briny air.
Hug the gulf to continue to picturesque Galaxidi, with stout stone mansions, swaying palm trees and a snug harbor. An important center for sailing ships until steam engines came along, ancient Galaxidi was believed to have housed a temple to Apollo. The church of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, now sits in its place, adorned with a rare solar calendar that tracks the zodiac cycle. A nautical museum holds a unique collection of ship paintings and priceless artifacts, including prehistoric obsidian tools and a 4,000-year-old curvaceous urn called an amphora pulled from an ancient shipwreck.
For dinner, head to To Barko tis Maritsas taverna, a converted coffeehouse decorated with nautical flair. Don’t miss the delicate pearl-pink taramosalata, with a tangy edge of garlic, or the marinated sea bass, cut paper thin and studded with peppercorns.
After dinner, I strolled along the waterfront and looked back across the gulf to catch the sunset. There, as the sky faded to a golden pink, the peaks of Mount Parnassus towered in the distance over the town of Delphi, where gray stone houses clung under orange tiled roofs to the cliffs.
Rising above it, ancient Delphi glimmered from the mountainside like a polished gem — as smooth and simple as the stone at its very heart that once marked the center of the world.
