A Fine First Love
by Carmina Masoliver http://carminamasoliver.com/ @The Carmina
Cake
You licked me like a treasure trove,
not like a wound, like you were a bandit
handcuffed with rope, burning
to break free, to finger
the most precious jewel, flick it
like a cliché of Capitalism, make me come
again, anew, as if
I was the first to shudder at your grip, then
slowly slip downstairs to the breakfast table,
drink tea and eat
whatever’s there; like we’ve known each other
as long as this
piece of string,
lean over to kiss,
as though it’s not a fling.
  A handful of weeks
and I’m gone, but
you’re visiting
after I fled on ferry to an island,
then left for Limoges, as though
London isn’t far enough,
two hours on the train, or three on the bus,
as though there is such a thing as an us.
And it’s not that I’m scared,
I just come prepared, usually,
but since I can’t remember our first kiss
...I didn’t expect this.
And so, on return to my parent’s home,
perhaps it was fear for the unknown
that my stomach churned
as my world turned
and my diary dates filled with question marks
  ?                 ???
             ?                                  ?                                  ?
                                                                   ?          ??                    ???
                 ?                                     ?
                       ?                    ?                                     ?
                          ???                              ??
  ?                                  ?                                  ?
My heart has been a cage
and you rattled it
open to surprises and spontaneity
because you make me feel carefree.
I have always enjoyed the comfort of a blanket,
and I find this as I lay on your chest, because
I don’t need to down vodka to loosen up,
like I used to cartwheel in clubs just to keep myself up,
regress back to childhood through jelly shots,
can’t remember the number, just know it was lots,
state rules like no pointing when playing Ring of Fire,
then point at someone pointing,
and laugh at fingers as if they’re fucking funny.
Okay, I am not yet my Grandad, with his pipe and slippers,
and this is still fun, only the hangovers are longer and less
worth it.
  Our generation don’t tend to smoke as much as in Mad Men;
sometimes we are curious about white powdered substances instead.
I wear slippers because I have bad circulation
and my feet and hands get cold, and sometimes I worry these are signs
that I have a terrible illness;
but, my slippers are fucking cool.
  Our mornings have involved us
stepping into the bathroom barefoot,
washing the smell of sex from our bodies
in the shower, our lips – eyes closed –
imagining a waterfall’s flow.
On our first date, do I remember you saying
you could stare into my eyes forever?
It is so typical of me to fall for that, as my hands
reach out ready to grasp at flowers, pen hearts
over the letter i in my name.
You told me you were sober when we met, but that night,
I got you drinking quite a lot,
started you off with a double shot,
with my hangover head soothed by hair of the dog
in the shape of Pimm’s and lemonade.
You call me sexy, and it feels like I’ve got it made
and now I’m splayed on my bed with this summer heat,
missing you, smiling, dreaming of kissing you, finding
this is easy.  Hoping I don’t
overcomplicate it, think too much while I wait, always
such a drama queen, and, you stand, the libertine,
saying it’s all good.
So I throw away words like should, can’t, never, mistake;
no need to concern ourselves with hearts that break,
let us just have and eat our cake.
  Our First Christmas
gave me a staple pair of jeans
                                                            wrapped my legs around you
                                                                                    never let you go
I said
          stay in my heart
as I gave the key
cut only for you
and you turned me around like an hourglass - shook me
like a snow-globe - made me smile like the pictures you paint
  you said
          I always will
and my heart pounded half in fear
but half in the certainty of my two times tables
of English rain in every season
of the movement of our hands
I hold the shape of your heart in my head
as you cup my breast, your mind at rest
  Hope
We found love in a hopeless place;
I could not forget your face.
In Norwich we met at Havana,
and you hooked me with your charming manner,
clasped my leg around your body,
came back to mine for a hot toddy.
Who knew what Fate had in store?
I’ve never felt this way before.
You’re the brightest eyes, the yellow-ist bird,
the Northern star, the only word
I need
to have you in my life for eternity,
because where you are is where I’m meant to be.
You give me hope, you give me love,
you give me dreams with open eyes:
Twenty-two years I’ve been blind-folded,
but what a wonderful surprise.

The Class Work Project - 4:30pm Image description: Logo reads ‘The Class Work Project’ in a circular shape inside a red circle. In the centre, there is a black illustration of an old-fashioned Victorian school desk. Image is outlined in purple with an orange background and illustrated purple and green leaves at a corner. The Class Work Project is a workers’ co-op which publishes literature from poor and working-class writers, centring their experiences and knowledge in order to challenge elitist knowledge production – they do this through their media arm, Lumpen. They also run workshops on class within social movement spaces, in order to develop stronger understandings and facilitate effective mobilizations in the fight for radical social change. Both Hannah and Dorothy, of The Class Work Project are editors of Lumpen, and creative practitioners in their own right. Dot is also a poet, who has published a series of poetry with Lumpen called See What Life is Like, please check it out on the website or come by the festival to buy a copy. Hannah is also a designer and illustrator, so if you like much of the design of Lumpen and their work over at The Class Work Project then buy a poster, buy a lumpen, buy a tee-shirt! Hannah is also a facilitator of the training and workshops The Class Work Project hosts on class. If you're interested in hosting one of our workshops, training sessions, or readings then please drop us an email at [email protected].  #feminist #feminism #poetry #spokenword #live‬ #poems #poets #poetsofinstagram #poetrycommunity #shegrrrowls #words #liveevents #livelit #liveliterature #feministshows #feministpoetry #feministshow #feministcommunity #carminamasoliver #livestream #livepoetry #intersectionalfeminism #intersectionality #intersectionalitymatters #poetryinlondon #thealbany #thealbanydeptford #arts #womanism #wearelewisham (at Albany Deptford) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaR_6WWsQiL/?utm_medium=tumblr

@burningeyebooks needs your support now more than ever! Please look up these recommendations & buy directly from the publisher to support them and the artists. Image Descriptions: 1. Collage of books from the following: 2. All the Days we Don’t Revolt by Agnes Török 3. Amuse Girl by Hannah Raymond-Cox 4. Come Home Alive by Penny Pepper 5. I Find My Strength in Simple Things by Desree 6. Good Earth by Caroline Teague 7. Talk You Round Till Dusk by Rebecca Tantony 8. She Grrrowls edited by moi 9. Circles ⭕️ written by moi I’ve seen Agnes Török at an online events and they were great! I’ve also seen Hannah Raymond-Cox in person and featured Desree at @shegrrrowls before, who was incredible! I have Rebecca Tantony’s books and this is beautifully written with illustrations by @annahiggie, and like all Burning Eye poets, great on stage too! I recently worked with Caroline Teague on a project and they are not only a joy to work with and a pleasure to hang out with, but a fantastic poet and all-round artist. I don’t know Penny Pepper’s work but she’s defined herself as a ‘working class old timer disabled activist’ so sounds pretty rad to me! I’ve also popped on the She Grrrowls anthology* that I edited as there are about 10 copies of each of these books left! You can also buy my book Circles from me directly as I have many many copies still! 💕 *featuring Joelle Taylor (just award led the TS Eliot Prize!), Bridget Minamore, Sabrina Mahfouz, Selina Nwulu, Aisling Fahey, Sophie Fenella, Jasmine Cooray, Esther Poyer, Belinda Zhawi and Rachel Long. With poems by myself and Rowena Knight. Beautifully illustrated by Natalie Cooper.
