Carmelite Conversations A Reading of the Poetry of Jessica Powers Wed 4 March 2020 10.30am – noon with Philip Harvey Jessica Powers (1905-1988) lived most of her life in the state of Wisconsin in the United States, over half of that in the Carmel of the Mother of God in Milwaukee, then when it moved to Pewaukee. She took the name Sister Miriam of the Holy Spirit when she received the habit at the age of 37. Jessica started writing poetry when she was a teenager and it went from there. This session is essentially a poetry reading, for enjoyment and edification, of many of her poems. There will be a biography of the poet and a paper on aspects of the work. The rest of the time we will just hear poems and talk about them. Fr Paul Cahill (Prior Provincial) has announced the closure of the Carmelite Provincial Centre in Middle Park, together with its associated Fundraising Development, Carmelite Centre and Carmelite Library ministries and that staff will work from home. “We are conscious of supporting our staff as best we can and of helping them to protect their own health and wellbeing and minimising the risks that any of our activities might pose for them or for the people to whom they reach out,” Fr Paul said yesterday. Arrangements are being put in place for our phones to be diverted so we can still respond to your calls. Our staff are able to access their emails from home. This situation will continue for as long as the State of Emergency in Victoria persists. Unfortunately, this also means that all public events of The Carmelite Centre are now suspended and that the Carmelite Library is no longer open to the public. LIBRARY LECTURE 2 at The Carmelite Library tonight at 7pm - All Welcome! The Challenge of Secularism: Staying Strong in a Post-Christian Society Tuesday 11 June 2019 7.00pm – 9.00pm with Barney Zwartz • What secularists want – to remove religion from the public square and make it a private matter – and why this is dangerous. • The growth of Identity politics and its spread in the public arena. • Some thoughts on the Israel Folau case. • Has Christianity, as secularists increasingly allege, been a malign force in Australia? • How Christians can respond positively, rather than retreating into the bunker. Barney Zwartz was an Age journalist for thirty-two years, and worked as letters editor, opinion editor, chief sub-editor, and religion editor, the latter for the last twelve years of his time with Fairfax. Winning several multi-faith awards, he covered two papal conclaves in Rome, the clergy sexual abuse crisis, and issues around Islam, among other subjects. He retired in 2013, but still writes about classical music and opera for The Sydney Morning Herald and Age, and has a regular faith column for the Sunday Age. Now Barney is a senior fellow of the Centre for Public Christianity, and a media consultant to the Anglican Primate of Australia, Melbourne Archbishop Philip Freier. He is married to author Morag Zwartz, with whom he has four children. The Carmelite Library has been successful in its application for a Community Heritage Grant from the National Library of Australia, in the 2021 round of applications. The project is a ‘Significance Assessment of the Carmelite Library Rare Books Collection’. We are very excited about this recognition and look forward to working with an assessor in the coming year. The Library holds an important and growing rare books collection, with titles from every century since the 16th century. Community Heritage Grants provide non-profit community organisations with funding to assist with the preservation of locally owned, but nationally significant collections. The grants are also aimed at making these collections more publicly accessible. 6 Australians at Carmelite Family Congress Damien Peile (Carmelite Family Delegate), Irene Hayes (Carmelites Centre Director), Chris Wade (Lay Carmelite Moderator) and Ann Baumber, Bernie Howe and Maria Howe (Lay Carmelites) are attending the Congress of Carmelite Laity at Sassone, Italy. The focus of the Congress is the role of Mary in bringing us to Jesus. At the beginning of the Congress, Archbishop Antonio Muniz, OCarm. (Brazil) reflected on his own experience of ‘always being a Carmelite’ and outlined how we can be inspired by Mary to be a 'Samaritan' church together on a road which continues to open up as we go along, allow something new to be born through silence and prayer, to always be on a mission to reach out to others, to stand by the cross in the midst of suffering which he described is, at times, a ‘theology of scandal’. The talk also drew on Teresa of Avila, Edith Stein and Elijah who opened their hearts to see God in new ways especially in times of crisis. 'We are on a road which keeps opening up, as a family, including all of us, and we must not be closed in times of difficulty," he said.'"Only in this way can we become alive to God’s presence - the God of surprises.' #carmelite #carmelitecentremelbourne #carmelitelaity #congress #sassone #italy #jesus #mission #community #church #catholic #christianity #family #carmelitefamily #prayer #faith #spirituality #lectiodivina #god https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn5fAmCAZGw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1i41pcdxf2wq0
