Gabriel's heart pounded in his chest as he crept down the cold, damp steps of the basement. The dim light cast long, ominous shadows on the cracked walls, and the smell of decay assaulted his nostrils. The air was thick and oppressive, the faint drip of water echoing in the stillness. He paused at the bottom, ears straining for any sound that might betray the presence of another. Satisfied that he was alone, he moved swiftly towards the far corner where the gang's "trophy" was kept; a bound and gagged police officer.

As Gabriel's shadow loomed over the other, the once-thief noticed the bloodshot eyes, rimmed with dark circles and glistening with what he could only guess was fear. His uniform was torn and dirty, his face bruised and smeared with dried blood. His wrists were raw and bloody from the tight bindings. Gabriel crouched down, trying to appear as non-threatening as possible, and removed the gag - only to be met with a natural response of terror and defiance.

"Shh, I'm here to help," Gabriel whispered urgently, his voice smooth and calm. "I'm a friend, okay?" He hesitated. Frowning. "Well, I wouldn't go that far. But I'm definitely the closest thing you have to a friend right now." He flashed a charming, reassuring smile, hoping to instil some semblance of trust. "I need you to stay quiet so we don't attract attention."

Oh, he couldn't blame the cop if he didn't buy it. The situation was dire, and trust was a scarce commodity. Glancing over his shoulder, Gabriel's paranoia flared. Every creak and groan of this sorry building made his nerves jangle. He didn't care if his assignment went pear shaped if it meant he could save a life. While at the same time he needed to prove to Steven, that he could be a reliable asset in fighting crime.

With deft, nimble fingers, Gabriel picked the lock on the chain binding Carlos. The click of the lock releasing was a small victory, but time was still their enemy. To reassure Carlos, Gabriel pulled up his pant leg to reveal an ankle monitor. "Look, I know this might not make you feel better, but I'm working for the good guys now," he tried to explain. "If you still have doubts after we get out of here, call Detective Steven Carlisle at the LAPD. Tell him a handsome hero with brown hair, brown eyes, and a fabulous moustache saved you."

He flashed a charming smile which vanished quickly. "Right now," Gabriel continued, his tone gentle but firm, "the most important thing is to get you out of here." He pulled the officer back to his feet, his weight almost having a fragile quality to it and Gabriel's heart ached for the suffering he must have endured.

The sound of footsteps above snapped him back to the present. With a suave but urgent grace, Gabriel took Carlos's arm, his movements confident and fluid despite the tension. "Stay close and move quietly," he whispered, flashing another reassuring smile. "We'll be out of here in no time."

okay in all seriousness i love how this show has always balanced grief and love. it's a year later and carlos is clearly still working through his grief. there are late nights and hard times, but they're still so, so in love, so blissfully, overwhelmingly happy. i love how much effort the writers have made to show us that, a nuanced look at the reality that some days are good and some aren't, but above everything, their love is so present. it's exactly what i hoped for, a year into their marriage. taking the good times with the bad and allowing themselves happiness in the little moments, lunch dates and carlos bringing donuts to the firehouse, pockets of joy that will exist no matter what and always be there when they need them

I know Carlos is still very much processing his grief and burying himself in his work and the search for his father's killer. But there's something about when he's talks with Mr. Soup Man about Gabriel being an "insufferable pain in the ass" and the way he smiles and laughs in response...

One of the tasks of grieving is learning to laugh and smile again when you're thinking about your loved one... and this feels like a small touch of healing to me.

As a person of colour with an immigrant mom and grandparents, Carlos's coming out story is one of the most realistic I've seen.

I love how they make it clear that his parents aren't ashamed or full on homophobic, they just feel uncomfortable cause there dealing with something they never thought they would have to deal with before.

It's kind of like how before coming to Canada, my Grandmama knew what snow was, she just never thought she would have to deal with it hands on and tried avoiding doing so.

Unfortunately by showing that they were uncomfortable, it made Carlos uncomfortable in his own sexuality. Not just his sexuality but things like interacting with people of the opposite gender and showing PDA to TK. It's a huge part of Latin American culture to be aware of such things (coming from someone from the Caribbean) and since a lot of immigrant communities that parents or grandparents may currently be a part of still thinks this way it is easy to have those thoughts transpired to you, even if you're "westernized".

The thing I love though is that his parents (specifically his mom) recognize and apologize for pushing their discomfort onto him and change their viewpoints. They apologize with a way of realizing their son, even though they raised him, is still a separate human being from them (to a certain extent; Mrs. Reyes still has her Carlitos) and that Carlos has feelings too. They talk directly to him like he is a human being. They also make it clear that they were in the wrong in the situation and don't put the blame on him for how they reacted, which is something that unfortunately happens a lot when children are finally given the apology they need from their parents.

Bottom line: Andrea and Gabriel (RIP my dude) are some of the best, of not the best parents in Lone Star and that I wish we could see more storylines like this in the mainstream media. It would help address a lot of the issues faced by people in similar situations like Carlos.
