Tamara Falco's Wedding Tiara
Tumblr media
Tamara Falcó Preysler, the 6th Marchioness of Griñón, is marrying Íñigo Onieva Molas tomorrow at Palacio de el Rincón in Madrid and she helpfully already told us which of her family's tiaras she is going to wear! Thanks to @duchess-of-lara for telling me about it because I didn't even realize the wedding was back on after the couple broke up last year. Tamara is a Spanish socialite and TV presenter notable for being the daughter of Isabel Preysler and the sister of Enrique Iglesias.
Tamara has chosen to wear the Montellano Diamond Tiara that was made in the 1920s for her grandmother, Hilda Fernández de Córdoba y Mariátegui, 12th Marchioness of Mirabel, 3rd Countess of Santa Isabel, 10th Countess of Berantevilla, who was married to Manuel Falcó y Escandón, 9th Duke of Montellano, 11th Marquess of Castel-Moncayo, 9th Marquess of Pons, so there's a lot of titles in the family and I don't even think that's all of them. In my opinion, Spain has the best system when it comes to noble titles because they have equal primogeniture meaning women can inherit in their own right and are not skipped over for their younger brothers. Also, if you have more than one you can cede the lesser titles to your younger children so Tamara is the third child of her father but he left her the Griñón title because there were other titles that his older two children were inheriting.
María del Rocío Falcó y Fernández de Córdoba, Countess of Berantevilla, wore the tiara for her debut ball in 1950. Her mother, Hilda, who was the original owner of the diamond tiara, is wearing the Turquoise Bowknot Tiara that was made by Chaumet in 1891 for her own mother-in-law, Carlota Maximiliana de Escandón y Barrón. The top of the tiara has been altered since then and I'm not sure which member of the family owns it now but they loan it out for exhibitions sometimes.
Tumblr media
Jannine Girod del Avellanal wore the tiara at her wedding to Carlos Falcó y Fernández de Córdova, 12th Marquess of Castel-Moncayo, 5th Marquess of Griñón, in 1966.
Tumblr media
Carla Pía Falcó y Medina, 10th Duchess of Montellano, wore the tiara at her wedding to Jaime Matossian y Osorio in 1981. Carla also appears to own the Wild Rose Tiara made by Chaumet in 1922 but I don't know if it has a longer history in the Falcó family.
Tumblr media
Amparo Corsini Montero wore the tiara at her wedding to Manuel Falcó y Girod, 13th Marquess of Castel-Moncayo, in 1999. Manuel is Tamara's brother and the current owner of the diamond tiara.
Tumblr media
There's also the Montellano Pearl & Diamond that was worn by Tamara's sister, Alejandra Falcó y Girod, 13th Marchioness of Mirabel, at her wedding to Jaime de Carvajal y Hoyos, 17th Marquess of Almodóvar del Río, in 1998 and was worn last year by Isabelle Junot at her wedding to Álvaro Falcó Chávarri, 4th Marquess of Cubas. I think the diamond tiara is the right choice. It has a long history in the family and looks like it would be the easiest to wear.

32, 42, B, and J for your oc 👀
ZEE! It only took me a couple of weeks but I am finally getting around to your OC ask, thank you for sending it in! OC as in original character- in this case, that is Leo (or Leonor) Montero, Valerio's girlfriend in my long-running Elite fic Close your eyes, count to ten.
32: Do they have a go-to story in conversation? Or a joke? Not a go-to story as such, but while Leo is usually a great conversationalist, she does get nervous around people who she feels don't like her - for example Lu and Carla. And when she gets nervous, she reverts to work talk. Leo is a good lawyer and knows it, too, so that's sth. for her to hold on to. That's why she likes to throw in legal jargon or talk about her recent trials in the presence of Lu and co. It's her safe place.
42: How badly do they want to reach their end goal? I'll focus on the personal, where for a long time, having a family with Valerio was Leo's end goal. She wanted to get there BAD. So badly that she was willing to ignore all sorts of red flags coming from Val. Girl just wanted a happy ending with the man she loved and their baby 😔
B: What inspired you to create them? From before I started writing Close your eyes, I knew that Val would be in a serious relationship in this story. It was important to me to make his girlfriend not some exchangeable cardboard cut-out that merely existed as an obstacle to a canon ship, but a real character with feelings and motivations of her own. I didn't have any particular inspirations for Leo, only that she be quite different from Lu on the surface - Leo is a tall (dark-)blonde who is close with her family - while also having some things in common, even though neither woman would acknowledge it: They both studied in the US, Lu at Columbia and Leo at Georgetown Law, and they are both fiercely ambitious. Not to mention their names, Leo and Lu, which are short for somewhat pretentious rich-people names, Leonor and Lucrecia. That's another reason that Lu cannot stand her (aside from the obvious): She already feels like Val replaced her, and the fact that he did it with a girl whose name is so similar to hers is salt in her wound.
J: Did you have to manipulate or exclude canon factors to create this character? Ah, here's where things get fuzzy. I know some people hated Leo because she came between Lu and Val. Maybe they would say having Valerio be serious and deeply care about a relationship that wasn't with Lu was "manipulating canon." But I don't think so. Valerio was obviously deeply in love with Lu, but he knew that their relationship could never exist in public. So he dated other people, partly as a cover, partly to have fun - and happened to actually fall for one of them. He never loved Leo the way that he loved Lu, but he did love her. I don't think that's anti-canon.
TL;DR: I ended up liking Leo a lot more than I thought I would, and I'm proud of her in two ways. One, in the sense of "I am happy with how I managed to create this character, who turned out quite well." And two, I am proud of Leo in-story for eventually standing up for herself and making the very difficult decision to walk away from someone whom she loved, but who couldn't love her back the way she deserved - another thing she and Lu have in common *cough luandguzman cough*!

Probably the strongest segment of ÉLITE is the first batch of "Short Stories" released in June 2021 to bridge the third and fourth season storylines. There are four of these stories, each split into three installments whose total running time is a bit less than the length of a regular episode, and each focusing exclusively on a specific set of characters. The tighter focus makes for much sharper writing, dialing back the melodrama and giving the cast members an opportunity to show that they can actually act (although at no point are the leads convincing as high school kids).
The best of the set is the fourth, which serves as a farewell for Carla (Ester Expósito), as Samuel (Iztan Escamilla), with whom she'd had a thing that went nowhere, convinces her to delay leaving town a little longer, even though she knows it's doomed (and ultimately so does he). The script builds effectively on what happened in the regular episodes: Samuel is clinging to the idea that he can get Carla to not leave by making some big romance movie gesture, but the reality is that he has no idea what's actually been going on in her life except where it involves him, and she isn't about to come clean because what she most loves about him is that he imagines her as better than she is. Expósito's performance is really good, and screenwriter Carlos Montero (the show's co-creator) trusts her to express what the character is thinking and feeling about the heinous shit she's running from without needing to spell it out in the script, which makes the scenario particularly poignant. Where the regular episodes are pretty firmly rooted in "guilty pleasure" territory, this is actually quite decent TV.
There was another set of short stories later in 2021, but they don't work nearly as well, with weaker stories focusing on the less-interesting characters. Still, the first set is a reminder that this kind of thing can at least occasionally transcend its trashy foundations.
Tumblr media
ÉLITE (2018–2024): Trashy, high-gloss Spanish soap opera about students at posh private high school Las Encinas, initially a mix of rich brats and social-climbing scholarship students, whose conflicts result in murders, near-fatalities, and mysterious disappearances: Each of the first five seasons is framed by a police investigation of the latest casualty, a gimmick that really only works in the first season (where it provides a degree of narrative structure and gravitas that would otherwise be lacking).
Even in its best moments, the show's relationship to reality is never strong, and it's sometimes rather witlessly hypocritical (for instance, the narrative is capable of recognizing the injustice of the school forcing Palestinian scholarship student Nadia (Mina El Hammani) to remove her hijab in class, but not enough to not indulge in its own array of islamophobic cliches in its depiction of Nadia's conservative working-class family). Nonetheless, the show gets by for a surprisingly long time on the strength of its cast and direction, buoyed by a welcome refusal to descend into self-mockery even when the plot leaves the rails. None of the male characters is especially endearing, with Itzan Escamilla (as scholarship student Samuel) becoming particularly insufferable and Miguel Bernardeau (more recently the lead on the disappointing 2024 ZORRO show) a little too convincing as rich dickhead Guzmán, but the girls are consistently more interesting, with Mina El Hammani (as Nadia), Ester Expósito (as morally compromised aristocratic rich bitch Carla), and Claudia Salas (as the salty Rebeka, whose mother is a drug dealer, and who ends up one of the show's most genuinely sympathetic characters) making the strongest impressions.
It's not until the sixth season, with all the original cast gone (several of them feet-first), that ÉLITE starts to feel like it's overstayed its welcome, with some flailing attempts to examine serious themes like abusive relationships tripping over the increasingly orgiastic celebration of wealth and privilege (any interest in characters who aren't filthy rich having departed with the last stragglers from the original cast). Although more visually stylish, it feels like it's become a different, much weaker show, and the writers seem to no longer grasp the distinction between "entertainingly messy bitches" and "grating assholes who are no fun to watch"; by the seventh season, there isn't a single character interesting or sympathetic enough to sustain the plot's frequent lurid detours into cloud cuckoo land. (It does at least have the decency to throw one of its most hateful recurring characters off a roof at the end, which I appreciated.)
The forthcoming eighth season will be the last, but Season 7 was already at least two too many, IME. CONTAINS LESBIANS? One of the boys from the early seasons has two moms, but while there are a surprising number of acknowledged mmf and mmm triads, it's not until the fourth season that there are really any wlw relationships among the principal characters, and they always remain distinctly secondary to the boys. VERDICT: More enjoyable than it has any right to be, at least for a while, but its watchability begins a marked decline after the fourth season, and the sixth and seventh seasons are no longer much fun even as trash TV.
