SWINGtember 29 - Leap of Faith

Here’s a long one in honor of this being my last entry, and for Cario’s birthday today!

Every single Spider-Man had their leap of faith as they donned their suits. But Cario had only been a child…

“Every one of you Spiders talk about a moment that changed everything for your journeys as Spider-Men.”

Cario tilts his head. He’s close to calling Sophia corny, but she looks serious and thoughtful about this. “What kind of moment?”

“No clue,” she shrugs. “Just a moment. An all-defining one. I think Peter B. called it a leap of faith. Or some shit.” She leans back, looking up at the sky. “Something that changed the trajectory of your life forever. That boy, the sweet one, Miles? He said it was when he recognized his fear and did what was right anyway.”

Cario leans back as well, noticing Sophia glancing at him.

Sophia hums in thought. “I guess I was wondering if you had a moment like that. Your leap of faith.”

The cyborg blinks as he glances at Sophia, then back at the sky, more thoughtfully now. “I don’t remember having one as a Spider-Man.”

Cario half expects Sophia to interject with a joke. But she only raises an eyebrow expectantly.

He recognized his fear and did what was right anyway.

“If I’m really being honest, I think what changed my life forever was when I escaped.”

Sophia’s eyes widen slightly. “You mean…from NiteMax?”

Cario shrugs. “Me and a few other younger kids found a way to get past the drugged haze they kept putting us under. We planned our escape, how to get the others out. The day came, two years later, and…and I was the only one left in my group still running. I…I remember getting shot in the ribs”—he inhales sharply, as if remembering the bite of the bullet—“but I guess I have the experiments to thank for adrenaline. I kept running, and I kept going until I could find one of the override exit points to open all doors.”

Cario gulps down the lump forming in his throat. It’s suddenly hard to breathe. “I did find it, but the gangway was quickly receding, getting farther from the exit, and the override lever that could open exit doors all over the facility. But I was already dying anyway…”

SWINGtember 25 - Coffee Run

The MIDNIGHT TALKS newspaper headline:

The (usually) camera-shy spider hero strikes in surprise appearance! And he’s…buying coffee?

“The defender of Midnighton is always seen in action. And despite several analyses by his many fans, no one has been able to pinpoint anything that gives away intimate details, if only to get to know him more. Fans know that the hero saves animals, doesn’t actually like the color green, and is active in several parades and riots. But a lucky photographer and student from MUDISci Journalism named Jacob Kwon, had a run-in with the hero in the evening of the 24th—buying coffee! The hero didn’t have much to say aside from apologizing to Kwon for spooking him, but after some light conversation, Kwon discovered another way this spider hero was, indeed, a hero. The following dialogue is from Kwon’s Christmas vlog:

“[Do] you buy coffee from Starbugs?” asked Kwon, to which the spider hero responded with:

“Nah. Not with everything going on. Buy your coffee local.”

Heroes don’t have to wear suits and skate on walls! The Spi-borg not only hinted at buying less from big companies supporting NiteMax and Oscorp, but encouraged us to buy our coffee local. It’s such a small gesture, but quite meaningful!” (Jenkins, Peer Street Journalist, 20XX)

SWINGtember 11 - Canon Event

The words came with a new kind of sadness

They meant everything, you mean everything to me

When exactly The Spi-borg and Strike slowly bled into just Cario and Sophia, they will never know. What the world knows is that one day, The Spi-borg was without his deadlier shadow, and Cario’s friends know that he lost Sophia, his partner, the sails to his anchor; the love of his life. Great things end; and what they had was indeed that—the pain, the healing, the love, finding home in each other (despite, despite, despite). That’s all it was. And they deserved more.

Some notes on Sophia;

Soviya Orsevi (later on: Sophia Parker) was a snake from the Institutum Serpenses, an institute dedicated to training girls to be assassins. After NiteMax and its connections shut down (including InSerpenses), she’ll spend her life finding those who worked with NiteMax and the Institute until she will no longer be haunted by a past she could not control. ‬

Also I don’t mean “snake” like, the reptile. Think of Black Widow, her past, and the widows she trained with. The Insitutum Serpenses and the girls they train to be “snakes” is essentially this dimension’s version of that.

I’m not sure how to talk about her being Cario’s canon event without full on rambling but, long story short: Sophia was sick with the same chemicals that had almost k’lled Cario (before the spider bite ‘reset’ his body/system)

SWINGtember 6 - The Bite™️

When Cario found out that evidence of experiments from NiteMax—the same place that took Cario’s life from him as a child—were resurfacing, lurking in the shadows, he fled to find one of NiteMax’s abandoned laboratories to scream his heart out. He did not know then, how returning to that cursed place would change him again, as well as his fate.

SWINGtember 18 – Suddenly, Symbiote!

Instinct often took Cario to the better parts of an awful situation; more lives were saved through gut feeling and driven heart, it has always been Cario’s driving force. But that night, when he decidedly took hold of the gooey, pulsing and raging being from Aiden Morgan’s body, things only took a turn for the worst. Cario felt himself hollowing, feeling nothing but borrowed anger, saw the world through Aiden’s eyes; saw that it was burning, always burning, saw how the creature fed on the fire.

The symbiote—Blaze—is familiar with the feeling of burning.

[Recorder Click] “…-yes yes, relax, officer. I’m starting… Hey. Been a while.” [Cario clears his throat.] “Guess it’s about time this city found out who I was. So… let’s do this one more time.”

SWINGtember 13 - Their Friend/s Find/s Out

Of all the times Cario imagined his friends finding out about The Spi-borg, this scenario was far from what he had in mind: under collapsed table and shelf, Adama and Tom hunched against the wall, wide-eyed with something Cario could not read at first. Jake was in front of them, fierce, protective, he looked like he’d seen a ghost.

Cario struggled against the grip of Glass-Ock’s claw, but he shook at the thought of his friends being terrified of him. That was, until they all silently mouthed, “Are you okay?” Then Cario nearly wept in realization—they weren’t afraid of him, they were afraid for him. In the same, companionable concern that made up their friendship as lab-mates in LAB326.

SWINGtember 15 - Ship!

They made a strange pair, the snake and cyborg. Both kept their true lives (define ‘true’ in their case, though) at arms’ length, ran from pasts which they did not deserve. Even when their paths overlapped, they were so drastically different; they were two sides of the same coin.

SWINGtember 27 - Family

Cario’s life had been a blur, one full of loss.

For a long time after the shutdown of NiteMax, his foster family had been the only family he had ever known. And even outside of that, friendships were fleeting. Nothing ever stayed anchored. That was, until he stopped chasing—only then did a vengeful assassin and a group of lost Spider-kids weasled their way into his life. And when even they could not stay, Cario would be assigned to watch over a few Spiders a few years later. They would name themselves the Project: SWING.

There were no constants in Cario’s life aside from loss. He knew what could come out of this arrangement eventually. But the Spider-borg knows hope like an old friend, and would cherish every person that came his way.

It’s not ideal, but he is happy. These people are the closest he will get to having a family.

Cario attempts to be Aiden and Blaze’s therapist for a day, then realizes the mess is much deeper than he thought.

SWINGtember 20 - Alternate Dimension Self

Sometimes the Spi-borg of Z-11 ends up in places he should not be. Sure, the Spider-Man are allowed to travel dimensions, but there are some specific ones the Spi-borg chose to specifically avoid. Unfortunately, a certain alternate self had caught on. And here they are, in dimension Z-9202—and it is here that he meets his alternate self: The Reaper.
