Deep. (movie). 6
Story: 7
Acting: 9
Chemistry: 10
A fun entertaining Syfy B rated type of movie. Nothing real fancy, just a type of rainy day or something to get your mind off of things. Don’t really expect to make sense of the storyline though everything is sort of dumb down unfortunately, just enjoy the cinematography and take in the rest of it.

Deep (2021)
Tumblr media
2021’s Deep is a disappointment and also a crowning achievement for those who worked on it. You would never guess that this 2021 film was directed and written by a team of up-and-coming Thai university film students. It looks and feels professional. What’s on display promises good things to come, so if Sita Likitvanichkul, Kittitat Nokngam, Jetarin Ratanaserikiat, Apirak Samudkidpisan, Wisit Sasanatieng, Thanabodee Uawithya, and/or Adirek Wattaleela are reading, let me know when your next project is finished. I’d be excited to see what you come up with next.
Medical student Jane (Panisara Rikulsurakan) does her best to care for her grandmother (Philaiwan Khamphirathat), younger sister June (Warisara Jitpreedasakul), and the family business while also maintaining good grades. The combined stress and debts have given her insomnia. On the verge of dropping out, she’s directed towards a high-paying experiment by her teacher, Professor Nichcha (Dujdao Vadhanapakorn). A German Pharmaceutical company will pay to extract Qratonin - a brain chemical generated while we’re awake - from subjects via a microchip implanted in their nape. The job pays well but there’s a catch: falling asleep before the full amount of Qratonin is collected will prove fatal.
Knowing that prolonged sleep deprivation can cause delirium, visual and auditory hallucinations, and impaired judgment draws you in. Even if Dr. Hans Miller (Kim Waddoup) isn’t up to something shady, each experiment requires Jane to stay up for longer and longer, raising the danger level. There’s also something unsettling about the way Qratonin is being collected. A device implanted beneath your skin in the back of your head? Makes me feel like spiders are crawling over me.
Except the movie is only tenuously about the experiment. For long stretches, Deep (the name of the experiment) is about Jane and the sleep-deprived friends she makes while partaking in the experiment. There’s hard-partier Win (Kay Lertsittichai), who stays up so he can paint the town red, nerdy Peach (Krit Jeerapattananuwong), who has no friends except those he makes while playing games all night, and Cin (Supanaree Sutavijitvong), who is only in medical school to please her parents and spends her sleepless nights worrying about her grades. The drama as we figure out who likes who, what this life-or-death experiment will teach them about their priorities takes over the movie. Only one scene takes advantage of the hallucinations. A better movie would use their wobbly mental states to its advantage. Did Jane hallucinate that key clue about the mastermind behind this research? Did Cin really see that creepy thing Peach did? Instead, there’s no uncertainty whatsoever. Deep is ultimately a college-age drama with two drops of lemon juice for spice.
It’s as if Deep resents its sci-fi horror-thriller classification because it shrugs off this title as much as possible. Showcasing the friendship, drama, and developing romance between its quartet of characters ensures the audience will care about the people in danger. Doing it too much means we leave the film dissatisfied. (Original Thai with English subtitles, September 4, 2021)

Deep: Thai Movie Review
Jane (Panisara Rikulsurakan) is a responsible medicine student who takes on the responsibility of caring for her grandmother and sister after her parents died. However, as they were about to get kicked out of their home because of debt, she gets a chance to participate in a sleep experiment that earns big bucks to pay for their mortgage. Deep has a very basic premise. Students sign up for a…
