Cardcaptor Luz AU
Thanks to the insight and suggestions of @owl-house-angel-writer, I was able to develop a clearer idea of this AU.
Cardcaptors' lore states that magic users usually are born to a magical bloodline; the manga reveals that Sakura's father was a reincarnation of Clow Reed without the memories or magic. But I didn't want Luz to be born with magic since I feel like it would take away from The Owl House's message of chosing yourself rather than being a chosen one.
So @owl-house-angel-writer came up with this idea: when Luz was a little girl, she wishes on a falling star to save her Dad. The star actually falls from the sky (for reasons unrelated to the wish) and it is revealed to be a young Celestial (my name for the Collector/Archivists species), the little sister of the Collector who has been searching for him. Luz finds and befriends her, but even when the Celestial (I'm calling her Astra the Explorer) says she can't heal Manny's sickness, Luz continues to take care of her in the abandoned house until she is ready to leave. When she does, Astra gives Luz a little blessing, allowing the human girl to draw magic from the starts like the Celestials do.
This way, Luz's powers are a reward for being herself rather than coming from a special bloodline.
The next thing was to figure out how to go about the capturing of the Cards part as there are 53 Cards in total (52 former Clow Cards plus the Hope Card). There are only 19 Cards in the manga: The Light, The Dark, The Windy, The Watery, The Firey, The Earthy, The Wood, The Flower, The Thunder, The Illusion, the Mirror, The Fly, The Jump, The Erase, The Maze, The Sword, The Shield, The Shadow, and The Glow. The other 32 are exclusively from the anime and the movies.
This is what I decided to do: of the original 19 Cards from the manga, I'm eliminating both The Glow and The Flower due to redundancy. The Glow only creates little balls of light while The Flower grows, well, flowers, stuff that Luz can do with the Light and Plant Glyphs respectively. To the remaining 17 Cards I will add The Time; these 18 Cards will be the only ones that Clow created and sealed in the Book, so there will be the ones that Luz will capture throughout Season 1.
Season 1 will consist of 20 episodes with Luz capturing one Card per episode except for Watery and Dark as their episodes are two-parters: Watery during the mid-season and Dark during the finale. The Glyphs will be found alongside the matching elemental Card, so the Light Glyph will be found in the first episode with the Light Card, the Ice Glyph with the Watery, etc.
Besides the canon Glyphs, I'm adding Earth, Wind, Lightning and Dark.
I I know that the Light and Dark Cards are meant to be sealed together, but the lore is changed a bit so that Light is the first Card Luz has which she uses to bind the other Cards. This is because the Light Card fits Luz the best.
Belos, with the Collector's help, created a false Sealing Wand to artificially capture the Dark. During the Season 1 finale, Belos tries using the Dark against Luz but cannot control it. This causes both the Dark and the Light to go out of control, forcing Luz to capture and seal them together.
As for the rest of the Cards, Belos found some of Clow's notes about Cards that he wanted to create plus how to create them, so he decided to make his own deck with the Collector's help, Unfortunately, these "Belos" Cards are hard to control and turn rogue, necessitating for Luz to purify and convert them into Star Cards. That would be the plot of Season 2.
After converting the Cards to her own magic, Luz calls them Star Cards (like in the dub) even though Kero insists that they're called Luz Cards. But that would make them all Light Cards, so Luz doesn't use that name. It's a running gag.
Note that Belos won't create ALL of the remaining Cards, only ones that he found useful like the Dash or the Shot. Belos, reading the notes on Cards like the Bubbles or the Sweet would be like "Yeah, I'm not making that one."
Luz would be the one who creates some of these Cards, mostly for practice since she will later create Cards based on the nine types of magic (except for Illusion which already exists). Though the Bubbles is useful for washing Kero, Hooty and King.
Other eliminated Cards are the Change, the Cloud, the Rain, the Silent, the Voice, the Song (the Bard Card will have the powers of these two and more), and the Wave.
The Nothing, the Nameless Card and the Hope will appear in Season 3.
Speaking of Season 3, the plot involves the conflict between the Archivists vs the Souls of other Titans and their worshippers. The latter would actually be antagonists since they hate the whole Celestial race for what the Archivists did to the Titans and many would not hesitate to harm the Collector and his little sister, as well as anyone who defends them. Nevermind that the Archivists were a rogue group and that the rest of the Celestials disapprove of their actions. Luz will be faced with the challenge to forge piece between these two races
@owl-house-angel-writer suggested Titans as antagonists because the idea is fascinating. While I was unsure at first, I admit that it's an unique take on things.
As you know, Kero will be by Luz's side from the start but what about Yue? What's he doing?
A few years before Luz came to the Isles, Yue awoke in the form of a young, silvery-haired witch with no memories but very powerful magic. He was taken in by Lilith Clawthorne who named him Julius Argent and appointed him as her right-hand man. A Silver Sentinel to Belos' Golden Guard (yes, it was @owl-house-angel-writer who came up with this idea). Julius Argent comes from Yukito's dub name, Julian, and the word argent which means "silver."
Julius’s personality is pretty much the same as Yukito's in canon. Since Amity is Lilith's protege, Julius helps to train her and they developed a bond akin to siblings. This also serves to give Yue a connection with both Amity and Luz, similar to the canon connection to Sakura and Syaoran. Of course, Amity won't have any crush on Julius, but Luz might for a bit. And I have no idea who should I pair Yue/Julius with.
Julius doesn't have any loyalty towards Belos, only being part of the Emperor's Coven because of Lilith. While he goes along with Lilith's plans, Julyan has no personal quarrel with the inhabitants of the Owl House and is rather affable to them. In fact, Julius would be very against Lilith using Luz as bait for Eda and, after witnessing Lilith using Luz as a shield, he would help Luz and Eda escape.
Julius memories as Yue are unsealed during the Season 1 finale, after Luz has sealed the Light and the Dark together. Yet, he waits a few weeks before performing the Judgement to give Luz time to recover from her fight with Belos.
The Judgement would occur on the second episode of Season 2 as episode one is Luz returning the the Human Realm after camp ends. On the way back to the portal, Luz and co run into Yue, who can enter whatever Realm the Cardcaptor is in without a portal. It is then that Yue reveals that he was Julius and the Judgement begins.
While not holding back, Yue is not as cruel to Luz as he was to Sakura, and has no problem with her becoming the Mistress of the Clow. He just needs to make sure that she is strong enough to face whatever future challenges that lie ahead.
Luz not only uses the Cards but the Glyphs as well, as Yue told her to use all of her skills. As to how the Glyphs work in the Human Realm, there is a vial of Titan's Blood nearby for some reason. Then Luz manages to transform her Wand into the Star Wand and turn the 18 Cards in her possession into Star Cards. She also fully bonds with the Glyphs and they become a part of her Magic Circle, signifying that Luz now draws her magic from both the stars and the Titan. This echoes how Clow's magic was a combination of Western and Easter magic. Obviously, she manages to defeat Yue and officially becomes Mistress of the Clow, but she prefers to treat Yue and Kero as her friends.
Bonding with the Glyphs also caused their magic to be imbued into the Cards, making them much more powerful. In fact, the Wood and the Thunder become just as powerful as the Light, the Dark and the four elements.
Some other things about this AU:
Luz could do some magic before becoming the Cardcaptor but it was unfocused and out of her control, causing issues that contributed to her being sent to camp. It was after becoming the Cardcaptor and receiving training that Luz was able to use her magic properly. She IS able to use magic outside of the Glyphs and the Cards, she just needs to practice before figuring out how to cast Demon Realm spells.
Like Kero and Yue, King will receive a super form of his own thanks to Luz, though Luz first needs to bond with the Glyphs.
Clow is actually the father of Evelyn, the witch that Caleb Wittebane married, meaning that Clow is the ancestor of the Clawthorne family. He married a witch named Lynn Thorne and fathered had Evelyn, though he died when she was very young. As an adult, Evelyn changed her surname to Clawthorne as a way to honor her father and hide herself and her child from Philip.
Being Clow's descendants explains why Eda and Lilith are so powerful. Eventually, they discover that they can draw magic from celestial bodies, Eda from the sun and Lilith from the moon. This also explains why Yue/Julius was so fond of Lilith as he could subconsciously sense her relation to Clow.
The Owl Family learn the truth about the Owl Beast earlier and Eda gains her Harpy form before the season finale. Luz also uses her magic to heal the damage on Eda's body caused by the transformations.

Cardcaptor Sakura the Movie 2: The Sealed Card
Chanbara Beauty the Movie: Vortex
Death Bell: Bloody Camp
Death Kappa
I'll keep adding to this list as I go. I can't be the only one who finds this a bit of a scam or something right? If I choose to endure commercials I should have enough to watch to actually make the commercials worth it for me as the customer right? Idk it's practically saying Premium is the only way to use it, but at that point just make the Premium the default. You sign up, subscription payment included. There doesn't seem to be a reason for a commercials option with such a limited selection of episodes in each series to watch.

What I Watched This Week – 5/7-5/13
Tumblr media
The Rose of Versailles - I initially planned to watch the first 20 episodes this week, then watch the second half next week, but the story got its claws into me so deeply that I watched all 40 straight through. I really shouldn't be surprised that this was so good, as anything that has stayed this popular for over 40 years obviously has something going for it. It's just a completely enjoyable mix of drama, romance, swordfighting, and gender set in Versailles in the years leading up to the French Revolution. The sound and visuals on the Discotek Blu-ray version I watched were both fantastic, making it hard to believe that this is from the same decade and director as Aim for the Ace!, which felt like a 50-year-old TV anime. If you haven't seen this yet, I strongly recommend giving it a watch. It's just a straight up good time. 10/10
Tumblr media
Backflip!! Movie - I absolutely adored this series full of delightfully earnest teenage boys on a rhythmic gymnastics team, and I've been eagerly waiting for this movie sequel to stream in the US, and watched it pretty much right after it uploaded. It had all of the charming characters and character designs I remembered, and had even more well-animated gymnastics action that blended 2D and 3D work. The series left off right after they won a regional tournament to book a ticket to the national tournament, and this sequel upended the usual sports anime pattern and surprised me a bit, but not in a bad way. It was a perfectly fitting emotional conclusion to the story that felt complete. 8/10
Tumblr media
Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2 - Now that I've watched the full series and the two movies, I can't understand why I ever thought I wouldn't enjoy this series. This movie takes place after the events of the original series, and pits the characters against a secret sealed Clow Card that threatens to erase Sakura's cards, along with the town and its people. There's just something about how all of the characters, including Sakura, are a mix of strengths and weaknesses, and how nothing ever really happens without the characters working together somehow. Whether it's the playful banter between siblings and childhood friends, or a magical situation that requires teamwork to resolve, the show is at its best when the characters play off each other. 8/10
