Doki Doki Literature Club: Poem Panic! (An DDLC Card Game)

Hey, this is a concept I created for a Doki Doki Literature Club card game. I had posted it on the DDLC sub-reddit, but I decided to post it here as well.

charlie gage radcliffe — misfit:

cost: 1 | power: 1 | ongoing | at the end of each turn, move this card to a random location and give it +1 power.

zinda blake — lady blackhawk:

cost: 1 | power: 2 | on reveal | move the first card you play next turn to a random location and give it +2 power.

barbara gordon — oracle:

cost: 2 | power: 2 | ongoing | see the next card your opponent plays at this location.

harleen quinzel — harley quinn:

cost: 2 | power: 2 | at the end of the match, destroy any random card on the screen and gain its power.

pamela isley — poison ivy:

cost 3 | power 3 | ongoing | if both lanes are filled up, the power of every card in this location is reduced by 1.

helena bertinelli — the huntress:

cost: 3 | power: 5 | on reveal | destroy the weakest card in this location. if it belongs to your opponent, gain +2 power.

helena wayne — the huntress:

cost: 3 | power: 5 | ongoing | if this card is at a location with 2 or fewer cards, it gains +2 power.

lois lane:

cost: 4 | power: 3 | on reveal | if your opponent plays a card at this location this turn, draw a card and reduce its cost by 1. (minimum: 0).

stephanie brown — spoiler:

cost: 4 | power: 5 | on reveal | reduce the power of the highest-power card in this location by 2.

selina kyle — catwoman:

cost: 4 | power: 6 | if this card gets destroyed or discarded, return it to your hand again and reduce any enemy card's power by 1. can only be used up to nine times. ;)

dinah lance — black canary:

cost: 4 | power: 8 | ongoing | reduce all other cards' power at this location by 2.

cassandra cain — batgirl:

cost: 5 | power: 10 | ongoing | cards at this location cannot be reduced below 1 power.

mary bromfield — mary marvel:

cost: 6 | power: 8 | on reveal | return all of your destroyed and discarded cards to your hand with +1 power and +1 cost (maximum: 6).

RGB updates

I ran into a semi-major issue in testing where the tank and mage decks are both stronger than the fighter deck. Bunny’s special ability just doesn’t work the way I intended it to, so I need to rework it.

Kalani (mage deck) the other hand works *too* well and creates an infinite loop that I need to patch out.

I guess this is why we test! Going to do some edits and print a new copy✨

Indvisable tabletop RPG premise #137: solo journaling game where.. okay, you know that serialised boys' adventure schlock from the 1930s and 1940s where the writers needed the otherwise intensely homosocial male leads to be seen hanging out with girls in order to prove that they're not gay, but they didn't want to include more than one female character, so they'd have just the one girl and sort of imply-without-ever-directly-stating that she's dating all of them at once? Solo journaling game where you take on the role of that girl.

Going to dip a little bit into the designmaking process itself under the cut!

The Knight of Water is thematically about sensitivity. Charm, romance imagination-as a person, it's about a 'knight in shining armor' type character who may help others with the matters of the heart.

I also wanted to note that another cool thing about this deck is that the artists were designated their suit depending on their art and rendering style! The Air suit focuses on more atmospheric type art, Fire is character symbolism driven, in the Earth suit you'll se a lot of traditional-style rendering, and in the Water suit you'll see a lot more anime-inspired art styles!

With these factors in mind, I wanted a composition that would pay homage to the classic anime bishoujo genre--sailor moon and utena played heavily into the design and composition--something with lots of sparkles, atmospheric framing, a pretty waterfall to tie in the elemental theme, and lots and lots (and LOTS) of roses. (Fun fact! If you look at each rose, they have a heart in the centre! Each one was carefully and painstakingly hand drawn!). The pose that was chosen for this card was also a direct homage to the classic Sailor Moon style transformation sequences (and also swan mating dances with the wings), with the element of a 'bleeding heart' visual cue so to speak with the red roses and petals to the chest haha--it was fun going through different pose ideas before settling on this one! Roses and thorns go hand in hand, so thorny vines were also added at the bottom so that they become more evident when the card is inverted! (The inverted card speaks of emotional upset, depression, hypersensitivity, and lashing out)

For the dragon design itself, I took the 'prince on a white horse' and 'knight in shining armor' aspect and meshed them with leafy and weedy sea dragons and betta fish from real life to make a unicorn-like design--a creature that is traditionally associated with sensitivity and emotions--with a classic anime magical girl spin. I wanted the design to look ethereal and noble, and still clearly a dragon instead of a horse! (It was trickier than one might think!)

That's all the notes I have at the moment! Overall this was an Incredibly fun project to think through, I know I've been absolutely vibrating off the walls to share this haha! Everyone else has also brought their A game to each card in this deck, be sure to check them out through the KS link when you can, I can assure you that each and every card is just as lovingly rendered as this one!

When you hit 0 health or bellow in game you de-transform and wait a turn to heal. If the whole team is out at once you lose.

Ideally the player cards would have these civilian forms on the opposite side to illustrate that!
