I recently beat the demo for Card-en-Ciel; the new game devolved by IntiCreates, the same team behind the Megmaan Zero series, Gunvolt, and Bloodstained. As someone who really loves card games and deckbuilders, these are the types of games I really enjoy.
The premise is pretty simple. You play as Neon, a "Master Chair Detective" (basically a white hat hacker) who takes on a case about finding out the scetet of some anomalies in various games. There's nothing too out there, but i really like Neon so far. Behind the do goober hacker side, he's just a big game dork who loves video games as a whole. It helps he's voice bt Aleks Le, and I've grown to like a lot of his roles like Shun and Minato. Heck, all the voice acting is really good, and there's a lot of it (which can thankfully be turned off since it persists into card fights, and i can see someone finding it annoying. I personally found it funny and charming)
The game flow is pretty straightforward. Go do a dungeon run order to progress with the story, come back, gain levels to improve your stats between runs. As for the game itself, it does a few things I really like. First off, despite what some videos say, this DOES NOT play like Battle Network. It's solely turn based with emphasis on positioning and card management. Ine of the cooler aspects is a balance mechanic where if you do enough break damage, you can stun an enemy and stop them from attacking. It adds some much needed strategy between going for pure beat down or stopping one enemy and moving out of the way of another. The game encourages you to fight because not doing ao raises a threat meeter that can add random debuffs when entering a room.
One of the more interesting aspects are Muse encounters. You can find them in a dungeon, and beating one allows you to recruit them, offering their skills and passive abilities when you meet a certain condition, and they can stack and it can get very, "I don't know what's going on"-y at times but in a good way.
Something else I like is how you interact with the map. After clearing out a room of enemies tou can place cards down for bonus effects, heal, or enhance cards with passive cheat codes. I really liked this mechanic a lot. Made me think what I need the most. "I could boost one of my cards permanently, but my deck is getting kinda bloated I could stand to see a few cards on the map, then again I am low on health" these are the type of choices I like. Very risk vs reward heavy and no choice feels universally better. It's great stuff.
Visually this game looks really nice. Very vibrant with very nice character designs....some of it a little fanservicy but the "all in good fun" kind that makes me laugh (like hell, the demo ends with you being able to use Ancie as a lap pillow..that just made me laugh one of those "want the hell XD" kind of laughs) and like I said the voice cast is really good. I can tell everyone had such a fun time voicing these characters.
I guess my only real complaint is guess is that outside of those moments of losing track of what's going on, keeping up with card effects and all the voiced dialogue in combat being a little much, I can see people getting a little tired fighting all these fights. These maps are fairly large, and nearly every square has at least 2 enemies on them, and because you're encouraged to fight a decent amount, i can see this get VERY repetitive and annoying for someone. Heck, after a while, I just focused on fighting the Muse and treasure room enemies and a few along the way. You aren't REQUIRED to fight EVERYTHING on the map anyway so I think focusing on those rooms and a few more for good measure would be fine. The other personal issue is...this game is a love letter to IntiCreates and their I.P. I haven't played a lot of their games so I didn't recognize a few names but that's just a me thing. (I should get on that. The games I have played by them have been very good)
I very much enjoyed this! It feels easy to understand mechanically, and the stuff it does differently from others in the genre helps it have its own identity. I love the voice acting. It's usually appealing. Yeah, the story (so far) isn't really doing much for me plot wise (outside of character interactions) , and I can see it at risk of being receptive but those didn't stop me from having a good time. I'm definitely gonna pick this up when it comes out. If you're into this type of game, or really love the company who made it I'd strongly reccomend this :)

TOKYO GAME SHOW 2024 | "Card-en-Ciel" | B3crew.com
I’m not normally into roguelite card games. And yet, Inti Creates’s Card-en-Ciel might finally be the game that makes me a fan of the genre.

I think I’m always going to be a fan of Inti Creates in my heart of hearts because even if they’re making shlock, there’s an earnestness to the way they make it.
I’m pretty sure that Divine Dynamo Flamefrit was literally just an April Fool’s Joke they made to help advertise Card-en-Ciel (the conceit being that all the cards from that game are based on either other Inti Creates games or totally fictional franchises) and then went “well wait, why don’t we just make this?”

Capcom-associated developer Inti Creates has announced a new IP, Card-en-Ciel, coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. No release date is available at this time.
Thanks to Gematsu, we learned that the developer has, however, given players a “Project Kickoff Trailer” for the game (below). Inti Creates also took a playable demo to PAX East 2024 in Boston this past weekend.
On the surface, Card-en-Ciel looks to be heavily influenced by the Mega Man Battle Network series, with an almost identical battle-grid, card-based battle system and a very similar node traversal structure.
Card-en-Ciel Description
Card-en-Ciel stars Neon, a gaming detective, as he collects and battles with over 300 cards on a deckbuilding RPG adventure. Players will adventure through over 10 different dungeons, earning character cards to strengthen their deck and unlock new techniques to use in ever-expanding roguelite card battles.
Special “Muse Cards” add another layer to the card battles, activating powerful abilities with their songs during battle, with 50 vocal tracks included in-game. Together with the Muses’ song abilities, players will use hidden card “glitches” and even enemies’ attacks against them to perform satisfying, full power combos with their unique decks.
Cards of a Suit, or Different Decks?
Connections to the Mega Man series aren’t limited to aesthetic and gameplay design. Inti Creates has worked very closely with Capcom over the last 25+ years, developing several games in the Mega Man Zero series, as well as Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge, a 2003 Game Boy Advance spinoff of the Battle Network series. There is, however, one distinct difference between the games, with Card-en-Ciel seemingly featuring quite a bit of fanservice; I will let the image gallery below illustrate this.
Given the relationship between the two companies, we might assume that Capcom is well aware of the liberties being taken with their game design elements. Given this tacit green light, I’m ready to raise two possibilities: (1) Either last year’s Mega Man Battle Network Collection (1.42 million units sold) was the sum total of Capcom’s plans for this IP and Inti Creates have been handed the torch with Card-en-Ciel, or (2) Card-en-Ciel is a further market test for a Battle Network reboot. Or… I’m completely pulling all this out of thin air and there’s really no connection whatsoever.
Were you at PAX East over the weekend? We’d love to hear about your experience with Card-en-Ciel or any other new games you may have tried there in the comments or over on our socials. We here at RPGFan will return the favour by continuing to bring you the best RPG news we get our hands on.

Finally tried out the demo for Card-en-Ciel, which was put on my radar for having Battle Network-inspired gameplay.
-What really impressed me is that while you can totally see the BN influence (both in gameplay and story premise), it’s absolutely doing its own thing rather than just trying to be BN.
-One specific thing I’d heard that I had misgivings about was that you can only move by discarding cards you would otherwise use to attack, but it works surprisingly well in actual gameplay.
-My other, broader misgiving is that it’s roguelike, something I never understood the appeal of because I like to collect things permanently rather than temporarily. I don’t think that preference has changed, but it didn’t feel like a dealbreaker either.
-There is so much going on. So much. It’s a fascinatingly complex system that all comes together in a fun and interesting way, and they very gradually ease you into it, but it’s. So. Much. I need more time to adjust to the learning curve, but this is NOT necessarily a negative! (You have to remember that I utterly adore original DS TWEWY.)
-If the complex systems don’t overwhelm you the constant dialogue will. Every card has multiple voice lines and they’re eager to cycle through them. I don’t know if there’s an option to shut them up, and part of me feels like even if there was I might keep them on to better get the personality of each card, but this is something that will be a big issue for some players, I can tell.
-Since the premise involves data from multiple different video games mixing together, there’s obviously plenty of parodies (the tutorial boss is Legally Distinct Charizard), but there’s also numerous characters from other real games made by Inti Creates. This struck me as interesting, I feel like even when games reference their company-mates it’s usually either a one-off cameo or still a parody, but this forgoes both those options while still not fully entering Smash-esque super crossover territory. I just think it’s neat. Also this could potentially open the door to Mega Man crossovers so—
-And. Y’know. This being an Inti Creates game, it spends a great deal of time and energy showcasing waifus. Whether this is a pro or con is a personal decision.
