When John Price is diagnosed with PTSD, I can imagine him finding it fuckin' impossible to tell people, and being entirely unable to process it.

To him, he's broken goods now. It's official. Stamped on his medical. For a man whose mental fortitude is his greatest asset, it would feel like a killing blow. They're still deciding whether he's safe to be in the field after that, which means he's on desk duty. He books some leave to hide away in his flat, avoiding everyone who loves him.

John's sister tells his niece as gently as she can why Uncle John is a little sad these days. So, Kimmy, being wise beyond her years and realising Uncle John is missing his friends, reasons he needs some cuddly toys to keep him company in his flat.

The first that arrives is a black cat with a white face that looks suspiciously like Ghost. This is confirmed when he checks the collar; it has "Goost" stamped on it. The next thing to arrive is a fox wearing a mini baseball cap. The "birth certificate" from Build a Bear says "Gaz". The final one that arrives is a Scottie dog in a tartan harness with a significant addition of fur along the top of its head and down its spine. This is "Soup".

When Nikolai lets himself in with the spare key, called by the 141 who are concerned their captain isn't responding to their texts, he finds John asleep on the sofa beneath a blanket, with the toys wrapped in his arms, his face buried in their plush. Nik doesn't disturb him, as much as he wants to hold the tightly curled ball of hurting John Price. He tidies up, has a shower, cooks dinner. Lets his partner sleep peacefully knowing it's probably the first time in a while.

John needs time and space on the road to recovery, but he also needs to let others hold his hand as he walks it.

This one isn’t set in any AU in particular, it’s just wholesome happy-ending tooth-rotting popcorn fluff. The idea is that Rex and Cody meet up and throw mud at each other on a beach, away from everything and anything else, before rejoining The Group of Very Alive Vod’e somewhere where they rebuild, create, and live.

The poetry that inspired Jeff Buckley

Voices as incredible as the one belonging to Jeff Buckley don’t come around too often. Unfortunately, after releasing one record, Grace, Buckley, with all his potential, was taken away too soon. At the age of 30, the singer went for a swim from which he never returned, drowning in the Mississippi River.

Yet, his legacy lives on as one of the most influential artists to emerge from the 1990s, and his music is widely celebrated today for its emotional and lyrical complexity. Not only did Buckley possess an otherworldly voice, but he was also an extremely gifted guitar player and writer, with all his talents combining to create a masterful body of work.

Even when Buckley was covering other artists’ songs, such as ‘Lilac Wine’, ‘The Other Woman’ and ‘Hallelujah’, he imbued the pieces with his own distinctive style. Yet, his penchant for covers wasn’t a reflection of an aversion to writing. Buckley knew how to pen a stunningly poetic track, with songs like ‘Lover, You Should’ve Come Over’ and ‘Morning Theft’ suggesting that even if Buckley didn’t have the vocal pipes he was gifted with, he’d get by just fine as a writer.

Buckley took inspiration from many different writers and musicians when writing his own songs. Musically, Buckley looked back to folk artists like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and, of course, his own father, Tim Buckley, from whom he was estranged. Elsewhere, he loved the work of Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the rich tones of Nina Simone, and Led Zeppelin, calling Robert Plant “my man”.

However, when it came to his literary inspirations, Buckley had an extensive book collection, which he no doubt looked to for ideas when writing his lyrics. He owned a lot of poetry, with Rainer Maria Rilke proving to be a particular favourite. Not only did Buckley own Dunio Elegies, Rilke on Love and Other Difficulties: Translations and Considerations Poems from the Book of Hours, but he also owned his epistolary collection Letters to a Young Poet.

Buckley was also a fan of the classic American poet Walt Whitman, owning Leaves of Grass and From the Soil. Of course, no poetry collection is complete without copies of Arthur Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell and Illuminations, alongside some Charles Baudelaire – Buckley-owned Paris Spleen. The singer also owned the Selected Poems of confessional poet Anne Sexton and modernist writer T.S Eliot.

Captain comedy connections

I’ve always said that the way I feel about the Captain, and the reason he was my instant favourite, is this: it’s like walking into a party and seeing someone you know. The ‘blustering but ineffectual authority figure’ is a really recognisable comedy staple. Just him being there positions Ghosts in a long line of classic British sitcoms. And then they flipped that archetype by giving him a relatable inner conflict and all his funny little idiosyncrasies, all those hints at the real person buried beneath the persona ♡ Anyway, none of these characters are identical to Captain, but I think he certainly shares some of their DNA and I just felt like gathering them together
