I am suuuper writer's blocked right now, so no new chapter, but I did redraw my JumbleTale roster! I will update the blog header soon, but for now...
Here is the main cast, as they appear around the time Serif first arrives in JumbleTale!
Tumblr media
Just because I can, I’ll drop some lore as well; everyone’s souls are displayed here and, while monsters do have white souls, the light they give off is tinted slightly, which reflects character traits and magic affinity; not that a monster can't learn magic that doesn't match their soul color, but it's easier to learn magic that does. That said, here's everyone's attributes (and call signs), from left to right:
Serif is a True Blue (Integrity). Technically, Serif isn’t native to JumbleTale so a different set of rules apply to him, but he is still associated with a soul color. Blue, or Dark Blue, is associated with Integrity; not that Serif can’t lie, he actually lies a lot, but he stays true to who he is, to his core beliefs and principles, no matter what he goes through. “Despite everything, it’s still you.”
Lucky Papyrus is a Just Yellow. Despite being raised to be a weapon by [Redacted] Gaster, Papyrus always had a strong sense of right and wrong no matter how much Gaster tried to beat it out of him. He cares less about what’s technically legal than he does about what’s fair.
Sanatos (Sans) is a Persevering Purple. A mix of Patient and Determined, Sans was quite adept in the realm of politics, until he best friend, King Asriel, died in his arms, causing Sans to retreat from everyone and everything. His specialty is to pick apart a problem into its component parts and recognize the intricate web of side effects a potential solution might have.
Hero Frisk and Buttercup Chara are both Determined Reds. I know there’s theories that Red isn’t actually Determination, but I’m going to go with it anyways, at least until a more concrete explanation is available. I’m also going to cover both at the same time because of how connected they are and that comparing the two is the easiest way to describe them both. Despite both being very Red, Frisk leans more towards Brave Orange while Chara leans more towards Persevering Purple, ending up at a more raspberry color. While Frisk is more likely to brute force a solution, Chara will step back and analyze the situation before finessing a solution. While not technically related to soul color, Frisk’s lack of empathy makes him more ready, willing, and able to do literally anything it takes to accomplish his goals, no matter who he hurts along the way.
Amber Alphys is a Brave Orange. Surprisingly. She is the embodiment of the phrase “Courage isn’t the lack of fear; it’s being scared to death and moving forward anyways”. Trained to be a bodyguard and steed in the Labs, she is powerful and skilled in combat but lacks confidence in social interactions, mostly due to lack of experience in her youth.
Starling (Mettaton/Mettané) is a Persevering Purple. As a Purple bordering Determined Red, Metta ends up with a hot pink color and is surprisingly similar to Chara, who is a Red bordering Purple. Metta is just as dramatic as his robotic counterparts but is more focused on puzzles and riddles than entertainment and fame, putting his detective/deduction skills to good use once Gaster erased himself from existence and left a big hole behind. While most interpretations of Mettaton are a bit of a gossip, this Metta doesn’t mind keeping what he learns to himself if the one it’s about wants him to, happy that he was able to find the knowledge at all.
Doc Toriel is a Kind Green. The driving force behind basically everything Tori does is the deep seated need to help others; this is the main reason she accepted the title of Royal Scientist, not because she loves science, but because she wanted to use the position to help the Lab victims. Bordering Cyan, making her more of a teal/turquoise, highlights her nurturing nature. This also makes her the perfect partner for Metta when working with Lab victims, bringing a gentleness Metta lacks while digging into the truth.
Captain Asgore is a Patient Cyan. Rounding out the group, Asgore embodies Patience in every aspect of his life, from training newbie Guards to dealing with the general public as a Peace Keeper. Patience and Kindness often go hand-in-hand, so he is often mistaken for a Kind Green, but he more just utilizes kindness to get the results he wants; however, he knows that some people aren’t motivated by gentle understanding, and Asgore has no problem using force when needed.
While not pictured, I know the soul colors of several other important, or at least interesting, characters as well. [Redacted] Gaster is a Just Yellow, which Papyrus inherited; he could “justify” anything as being “for the greater good.” Queendyne, or Queen Undyne, is a Brave Orange, bordering Red, and is a bit of a political wrecking ball. Frisk’s cousin, Marriweather or Marri, that took them in before they fell is a Kind Green bordering Yellow, making her a sort of olive green, and we’ll see more of her later. Spear Mouse (Scarf Mouse) is a True Blue while Bronze Masque (Nacarat Jester/red demon) is a Patient Cyan, despite his coloration. Doggo and his protégé Tomcat (Burgerpants) are Patient Cyan and Brave Orange respectively; they fit together like puzzle pieces.
I wrote out a ton more, like five paragraphs worth, before realizing I really should just make a new post for background characters and who all is jumbled.
Tumblr media
This is the same pic from above but with some extra added bits, like Metta’s eventual robot body and Alphys with just her dress and showing off her stripes. Some interesting notes about design choices, in no particular order, are:
Alphys' coat and dress are the same colors as Papyrus' vest and shirt, respectively.
Doc Tori's apron is her Royal Scientist uniform; white lab coats were optional anyways and she likes differentiating herself from the trauma of The Labs. Before the Underground, the uniform was made of leather and styled more like a Blacksmith's apron, since that's more-or-less what the job entailed, but now days it's just sturdy brown cloth. I always did like brown and purple as a color combo.
Asgore's head and mane were really hard for me to wrap my head around before so this time I took a shortcut and traced Simba from The Lion King before I started messing with the design. He still looks a lot like Simba, for better or worse.
I swapped the stripe colors of Frisk and Chara's shirts, partially to reference their jumbled character traits, but also because I think Yellow Justice suits Hero Frisk and Purple Perseverance suits Buttercup Chara better than the other way around.
Sans is the only Boss Monster displayed here, though Asriel, Undyne, and Gaster are all Boss Monsters as well. Boss Monster souls give off more color than their regular counterparts and this can be used to identify them as early as a few years old. In trying to expand on this I’ve come to realize that I really need to write a full post about how Boss Monsters work in JumbleTale, and probably get into monster reproduction as well.
For Metta's wheelchair, I took colors form Mettaton's original box form. Turns out, wheelchairs are really fucking hard to draw. Metta's in particular is based on a more sporty, versatile wheelchair design rather than the common hospital-style wheelchair.
Asgore and Toriel are often compaired to goats but I always thought they looked like they had some lion-like traits as well. Since Doc Tori and Captain Asgore are not Boss Monsters and are not related in any way, I decided to highlight these differences by making Tori a pure goat monster and Asgore a horned lion.

When Martlet came to again, everything was dark, in a way that even the most remote corners of the Underground never could have been. The first thing she did was look down at herself, but to her dismay everything was still as it had been just before. Same black feathers, same stupid armor, same yellow SOUL on her breastplate. Same accursed form.
* (… It’s powerful. Sounds like a good deal.)

Chapter 2 of Zenith of Justice, the story for my Captain Martlet AU, is now out! It features Alphys not having a good time, Martlet having an arguably even worse time, and Clover having a... time? I also got this banger art for chapter 1 commissioned from my bestie @jakearison and y'all should check out their art bc it's banger.

Alright, today is the first day of the Valentine’s Week Event conducted by @cherry-bomb-ships! And since Day 1 is dedicated to Familial F/Os, I would like to dedicate today to two family members who are very important to me.
My father figure Asgore and my big sister Undyne!
Tumblr media
Together they have both showed me great kindness and taught me great strength in their own special ways. This small drawing is my thank you to them as they continue to comfort and inspire me.

What Papyrus & Asgore think about eachother? We know that Pap is a hater but is it mutual? Has Papyrus forgiven him? Undyne? Anyone?
I’d imagine Papyrus definitely just hates Asgore. He has that picture of asgore in his room with a bunch of darts and sharp objects thrown into it.
And Asgore just does not care enough to have any kind of feelings towards anyone who isn’t a direct threat to his main objective.
Therefore, I’d imagine he doesn’t even see papyrus as a threat that would even consider conspiring against him due to the circumstances regarding Sans. Asgore, fully believes everyone is under his command and is devoted to him regardless if it’s from fear or pride.
Papyrus being fear, Undyne being pride.
For Undyne because she’s known Asgore for a long time (if I remember correctly) she still would’ve followed the same path, with more hostility and pride. A Royal Guard captain that would jeopardize her fellow guardsmen in order to remain loyal to Asgore.
I think Undyne would forgive Asgore.
It’s harder for Papyrus to forgive Asgore.

underswap sprites i did for fun lol
-Chara and Frisk Swaps obviously lol but they still keep their personalities and Meta sides. Chara still represents the addiction to number based rewards, finality and your true RPG character.
-Frisk still represents curiosity, completionism, emotional attachment and memories you cherish and the joy from playing for plays sake But theyre in Charas narrator role.
-My take on underswap Chara’s design is based on Unused Human and The Vessel
-My take on underswap Frisk’s design is based on Hero and Kris
-Flowey is still Flowey but hes an echo flower lol I mean i have to swap something
-Asgore and Toriel keep their roles still before their childrens deaths and how they swap roles will play out like Inverted Fate
-Papyrus is the sentry and self appointed judge obviously and hes VERY enthusiastic about his role and along the way he does science experiments and hes still THE GREAT PAPYRUS NYEH HEH HEH!
-sans is an actual member of the royal guard but he doesnt do much yet it seems like he is actually doing sh!t. He sells hotdogs.
- Alphys is the captain of the royal guard but her methods are less direct and she mostly uses puzzles and diversions alongside technology to stop and capture chara, she actually is quite shy and insecure and still a weeb. She does fight direct at the end of waterfall with a mech
- Undyne is the royal scientist, a MAD one. Her experiments can be quite explosive (literally.) she is still brash, determined and willing to sacrifice herself just for the betterment of monsterkind but has expertise in technology and science.
-In this, Mad Mew Mew and Mettaton swaps. Maddie’s show will be more Anime themed and a lot more chaotic than Mettaton in Undertale.
-Again, for Toriel it will work out like Inverted Fate
-I didnt swap Asriel because i am not a fan of swapping monster kid and asriel because to me it doesn't make any sense so he is in the tragic prince role still but Frisk is his childhood best friend instead of chara
Anyways thats all i have for now because its just a random thing i came up with

So was rewatching Othertale: Before the Hack (part 1) a few days ago and posting about it, which you can find here, and i was taking notes as i did.
You can also find the link to my analysis of the [caring] animation here, and my analysis of the [experiment] animation here and here.
And happy 9th birthday to both Othertale, and Color Sans!
“Undyne, or Ivory, comes from an AU called Othertale. She can play piano and has a nice sense of music, but can’t sing. She’s much weaker than her Undertale counterpart.
In this AU, Sans never existed (aside from a mysterious sock in the house that Undyne and Papyrus eventually move in to.)
And instead, Undyne—an orphaned street kid blind in one eye with her red hair in a braid—starts looking after an even younger orphaned kid named Papyrus from bullies and thieves. Before eventually, the two decide to stick together as siblings.
Due to being more focused on looking after and raising Papyrus, Undyne does not have any goals to join the Royal Guard or free the Underground or capture any humans.
She cares more about her little brother than anything, and even uses piano skills to eventually become something of a celebrity for the Underground while Papyrus goes on to become a math teacher.
Othertale Undyne grows up in a universe where Sans doesn’t exist, Papyrus is her younger adoptive brother, and she had to work to keep herself and her brother alive.
Using her skills in piano playing to perform concerts, she earns enough to get herself and her brother off the streets.
She seems to take this very seriously, such as being nervous and not sleeping, staying up all night practicing. Especially since she’s become so well know that even King Asgore and Gerson Head of the Royal Guard would be there.
Neither she nor Papyrus have plans to join the Royal Guard, so Gerson is still the captain of the Royal Guard.
Neither Papyrus nor Undyne have any official training, although Undyne and the Royal Scientist Alphys are still love interests—with Alpyhs being Papyrus’ Undernet friend, and appearing to have a celebrity crush on Undyne—even giving her a gift for her big concert.
Because the six human souls also don’t exist in Othertale, breaking the barrier isn’t possible. Mettaton operates more like a living weapon than a star, and the amalgamates don’t exist either. Although Flowey still does.
In the present day of Othertale, many monsters have mysteriously been going missing; with the King himself having to speak on the issue.
It is unclear if Undyne is any concerned about this, given how she readily goes on walks alone with Alphys and was eager to explore an abandoned sentry station that showed up out of nowhere when she heard someone calling her name from it.
One day, however, Undyne is lured into the Void through a sentry station; she hears someone calling her name but no one else can hear it. She decides to immediately go exploring because she wants to have fun. She is rather pushy when Alphys is too scared to go in and explore, but ultimately doesn’t force the other woman to go in.
But inside she is confronted by Gaster and Sans/Color!Sans. She doesn’t understand what’s going on, but is knocked out by a magic fueled punch by Color that transfers some of Color’s “soul power” into her, which opened Undyne’s “blind eye.”
Ivory is not afraid to defend herself; not hesitant at all to summon one of her spears and point it at Gaster when he advances on her, warning him to stay back or else she will hurt him. Although she only does this when he attempts to make a move towards her.
She seems very very nervous about her concert, and she doesn’t seem to have been ready for the level of attention and popularity her skills brought her.
Due to her magic eye that Color unlocked, she seems able to immediately tell if there’s danger nearby; like a warning, perhaps from Color himself. She seems to trust her instincts a lot, immediately ditching her big concert and audience to follow her gut and run straight into danger.
When she finds Alphys injured, she’s furious and fiercely protective; demanding to know who did it in a low growling tone.
Once making sure Alphys is okay, her immediate concern after is her brother and his safety. But rather than immediately running off and abandoning Alphys, she expresses this to her—and after getting reassurance that the other woman is okay and understands, she gives Alphys a tight hug before running off after Papyrus.
As soon as she finds and protects Papyrus, she orders her brother to run and get help while she fights off against the other monster attacking him on her own.
She’s able to shortcut a lot like Sans is able to now. Her eye glows like Sans’ did, only yellow this time. Her fish ears/gills pin back when she’s scared.
When she gains her second form, her hair is chopped off to what appears to be about ear length. Her spears are stronger and longer, and she has her own Gaster Blasters.
She dresses like an Underfell Undyne in this form—and she wears a heart shaped golden necklace with the letter “f” on it.
We don’t know where she got it, what it means, who it came from—but it was said to be a gift from someone.”

^ the images I am referring to. (All art by superyoumna.)
This part is in reference to the [experiment] short, and the brother & sister comic.
Before Gaster jumped into the Core and Sans was forgotten in the Void to create Othertale, back when the universe was still Undertale—this universe seems to subscribe to the idea that both Sans and Undyne’s magical eyes were due to experiments by Dr. Gaster.
Sans says that Dr. Gaster made a mistake when giving him his eye, that it made Sans’ body extremely unstable and fragile—and possibly more, although Sans doesn’t seem to hold it against Gaster even when Gaster holds it against himself.
Sans reassures Undyne that Gaster won’t make that same mistake with her, but when the experiment finally works and Undyne is able to see from her fake eye, Gaster immediately tells Sans to remove the soul energy or it would damage Undyne’s body.
Undyne during this flashback seems to be around 5, while Papyrus is at most 1-2, and Sans seems to be in his late teens to early 20s. When Sans is pulled into the Void and the world is rewritten to forget Sans and make Othertale, Ivory’s eye is blind again and later needs to be reactivated by Color transferring his soul energy back to her.
All a part of Color and Shade’s plan to empower Ivory with knowledge and power so she can fight against the impending threat, since Color and Shade cannot leave the Void without the risk of dying.
Despite how Ivory and Shade’s meeting in Othertale’s Void is confronting and wary, in the past, child Undyne seemed to find comfort in Gaster and trusted him a lot—such as wanting him to share in her happiness, being worried about him when he leaves in frustration, and saying that the lab is spooky without him around.
As a child after Sans is forgotten, however, it appears little Ivory met little Sage sometime after an event just referred to as “the explosion.” And ever since then, Sage only ever sought Ivory out whenever the other children would steal from and bully him—and Ivory would beat up the bullies for him and get his stuff back.
One day, while searching for a rubix cube in the garbage dumps, a frantic and crying Sage runs up to Ivory to tell her that the others kids stole his toy car.
Ivory notes that he only ever comes to her when he needs protection. Sage immediately apologizes for this, but Ivory quickly corrects herself as that wasn’t what she meant—this is the moment where Ivory proposes that Sage stick with her instead of surviving on his own.
Sage is reluctant to accept because even though they are friends, they are still strangers. In answer to this, Ivory gives Sage her rubix cube and loudly states that they are neither friends nor strangers—instead they are siblings.
Sage immediately gets excited by this idea, and the two proudly and loudly declare that they are siblings—and Sage promises to always look up to her and support her as his big sister and as the “great Papyrus!”

ok ok I trust you to be as insane about this as I am
in the seven eight nine dialogue, when Alphys talks about how seven loved five and was just doing what they felt they had to, Toriel interprets it as being Asgore doing what he had to for monsterkind, but I think she was actually thinking of Undyne doing what she felt like she had to by attacking Frisk, because she loves Asgore (and Alphys). being "sicced" on them as the captain of the royal guard, and playing the rule of the "misled antihero" in undertale's story.
when Toriel says that this makes seven "weak", Undyne bursts in with a distracting display of strength, trying to dismiss the topic. you could make the argument that she just wants to defuse Toriel from being mad at Asgore, but she has a seriously pissed look on her face. as if she took that personally, but also didn't know how to argue with it...
ANON. ANON YOU ARE SO FUCKING CORRECT FOR THIS HOLY SHIT. ANON. ANON WHO ARE YOU ILY

Zenith of Justice - Chapter 3
Undyne wasn’t a sciencey kind of monster. Neither was Asgore. Neither were 01 or 02, as far as she was aware. So she could be pretty certain that all the scientific mumbo jumbo, all the proper nouns and specific terms that Alphys had been using, were not for any of their sakes. So for whose sake was it, then? Well, maybe Dr. Alphys was just nervous. Maybe she was stalling to get her thoughts in order. Or maybe the Royal Scientist thought that if she dressed up her crimes in sterile language, it would dampen their impact.
Chapter 3 of Zenith of Justice, the story for my Captain Martlet AU, is now here! This one has... more Alphys suffering (sorry Alphys), everyone's favorite pair of unnamed Royal Guards, and Martlet making a decision.
