Summer is an incredible time for open air experiences with your fuzzy companions. Exercises like ocean side strolls, forest climbs, and canine park play are wonderful, however the hotter weather conditions additionally brings the gamble of tick chomps and bugs. These vermin can flourish anyplace, including your patio and home, and can cause distress and serious sicknesses in pets.

How Does Dog Flea Treatment Work? Pills, Sprays, Shampoos, Collars, and Spot-On (Topical) Explained
https://img.chewy.com/is/image/catalog/146286_MAIN._AC_SL1500_V1559077991_.jpg There are many things I enjoy living in Minnesota, but the flea population isn’t one of them.
According to WebMD, Minnesota has one of the larger flea populations in the United States[1].
One good thing is fleas aren’t very hearty when it comes to the cold, so it is less likely dogs will get fleas in the colder months. Flea season in Minnesota is traditionally April through November.
Unfortunately, flea season is getting worse because our winters aren’t as severe and our warmer seasons are getting longer.
Also, if a flea is attached to a host in the winter, the host keeps the flea warm enough to continue to survive and procreate.
So, what do we do when you live in an area flush with fleas?
In our house, we use a variety of preventatives in our home for a few different reasons.
My two youngest dogs take Bravecto Chews every three months, whereas my two older girls get Frontline applied every month.
The reason why we use different methods is due to the various health issues in our home.
Also, we have chosen Bravecto and Frontline because they also help the fight against ticks, which is also an issue in our area.
Not sure if your dog is infested with fleas? We can help you figure that out!
How Do Flea Pills and Tablets Work?
Oral flea medications kill adult fleas, preventing them from laying eggs.
Most oral flea medications last at least 30 days and can be used to both prevent and treat flea infestations.
However, there is a treatment, Capstar, that’s solely used to manage flea infestations, and it only lasts 24 hours.
Most flea medications kill fleas by inhibiting aspects of their nervous systems, causing paralysis then death.
Simparica (Sarolaner)

How It Works – After your dog eats the Simparica chewable, the insecticide sarolaner enters the bloodstream. When fleas and ticks bite your pup, they will ingest the blood and die because sarolaner inhibits neurotransmitters such as GABA and glutamate[3]. Fleas die within 3 hours.
How to Use It – The chewable pill is liver flavored so most dogs will readily eat it like a treat. If not, it can be wrapped or hidden in food.
How Long It Lasts – 35 days
Side Effects – Most common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea[4]. In September of 2018, the FDA released a warning that stated isoxazoline class drugs might cause seizures and other neurological effects[5]; Simparica contains this class of drug.

Which One to Use and When
There are a variety of different flea products on the market because there isn’t just one flea solution that will work with every situation.
Factors like your dog’s age, health, and activity level all play into which flea product would be best for your situation.
Scenario 1: Your Dog LOVES the Water
Hartz does make a water-resistant flea collar, though it won’t be as water resistant as other options
If your dog enjoys swimming and does so frequently, a flea collar may not be the best choice.
Many flea collars state that exposure to water is not recommended more than once a month.
In this situation, it would be best to consider using an oral medication or spot-on type treatment.
Oral medications do not have any water restrictions.
Topical treatments do not recommend exposure to water for 48 hours after application, but then do not have any water restrictions for the balance of the month.
Scenario 2: You Have a New Puppy and Want to Avoid Fleas
Flea products have different age ratings, so if you just picked up an eight-week-old puppy, then the best option is topical treatment.
Most spot-on treatments are safe to use with puppies eight weeks old and up.
Scenario 3: You Live in an Area That Fleas Aren’t a Problem, but Plan on Visiting an Area with a High Flea Population
Because your pet doesn’t require long term treatment, a spot-on or spray-on treatment would be best.
Just be sure to apply it in advance of traveling so that it has time to absorb into your dog’s skin and bloodstream.
Scenario 4: Your Pooch Has Fleas
Unfortunately, fleas happen.
Fleas love dog beds. Use flea control sprays to keep them away!
One time, I picked up a foster dog from animal control and she had fleas.
The first thing I did was to call my vet and get Capstar. Capstar works quickly and effectively to get rid of fleas.
The second thing I did after giving my foster Capstar was to apply Frontline.
After an hour, I felt safe to bring her home, but I did use flea spray on the dog’s bedding in my car and my house.
Using all three products avoided a flea infestation in my home while at the same time ridding my foster of her pesky fleas.
Side Note When Using Multiple Flea Products
Some products are safe to use together.
However, it’s always safest to consult your vet before combining products since overexposure to pesticides can cause toxicity issues in your dog.
Final Thoughts
Don’t forget to get a yard spray to protect your dog from bringing fleas in from outside!
If I could give any pet parent one piece of advice when it comes to fleas, it would be to use a flea preventative.
Avoiding a flea problem is, by far, the easiest way to deal with flea issues. Flea preventatives might seem pricey, but in truth, they are a lot cheaper than dealing with a flea infestation in your home!
I know there are many flea products on the market which can make it challenging to know which product would work best.
Hopefully, I was able to get you started in the right direction and help you narrow down the best solution for you and your dog.

dealing with canine hypersensitive reactions
canine hypersensitive reactions are very much like human allergic reactions and also produce the identical signs as human hypersensitive reactions. There are five forms of dog hypersensitive reactions: food hypersensitivity, flea hypersensitivity, bacteria allergy, contact hypersensitivity and atopy. here are some simple facts approximately each of those allergies.
food allergic reactions
The most commonplace symptom of food hypersensitive reactions is scratching, due to pores and skin inflammation. canine foods comprise a host of elements which can motive an hypersensitive reaction on your canine. some of those elements are:
Meats: beef, chook, beef, Lamb, Fish, Eggs
Diary merchandise (Milk)
Grains (Wheat, Whey) Corn
maximum canine owners regularly scold their canine for scratching too much. Any obsessive behavior your canine demonstrates, such as consistent scratching, chewing, licking, requires on the spot interest. in no way expect that that is just a new addiction your canine picked up. canine allergic reactions can make your dog very uncomfortable.
other than scratching, a number of the alternative signs dogs can experience are:
sneezing
coughing
eye and nostril discharge
Itching around the anus
hair loss
loss of urge for food
pawing at their ears or head shaking
vomiting
diarrhea
respiratory issues
setting apart the allergen which reasons the allergy isn't smooth due to the fact the canine is commonly allergic to 1 particular factor inside the food. consequently, it is a remember of keeping apart that component. you can try doing this with an elimination weight loss program, which the general public do not have the time or energy for. The removal weight-reduction plan requires getting ready particularly-cooked meals which include a greater wonderful meat, like rabbit or venison, mixed with rice or potato, which wouldn't commonly be discovered in dog meals.
An less complicated and extra modern approach to test for the presence of a meals hypersensitivity is to attempt a canine food which incorporates hydrolyzed proteins, which include Purinas HA or Hills z/d. Hydrolyzed proteins are damaged down into molecules so small, they cannot affect the immune system, which is what causes the allergic reaction. If the hypersensitive reaction is going away at the same time as your dog is in this diet (which could take about 8 weeks), then he most probable is suffering from a food hypersensitive reaction. At this factor, you will begin to re-introduce the possible allergens one at a time (individual meats, wheat, corn, milk, and so forth.) for a period of two weeks each. If the signs return, it's miles maximum in all likelihood because of the factor being brought at that point. You should appearance out for that ingredient on canine food labels in future purchases.
Atopy (inhalant allergic reaction)
Atopy is the maximum not unusual of all dog hypersensitive reactions, which is because of environmental elements, which includes dirt mites, molds, residence dust, human dander, feathers or pollen.
signs and symptoms of atopy encompass excessive chewing, licking and scratching on the face, paws, abdomen, armpits and genital vicinity. proof of this behavior may be observed in analyzing your dog's paws, armpits and genital vicinity. Reddish-brown stains broaden in those regions due to immoderate licking. this will not be evident in dogs with darkish coats.
Atopy is not smooth to diagnose because of different dog hypersensitive reactions having the same signs and symptoms. as soon as those different canine allergies (food, flea and contact) have been ruled out, your vet can proceed with checking out for the root cause of the atopy. The maximum accurate technique of testing for atopy is Intradermal skin checking out.
there are many different treatment alternatives for atopy. The quality treatment might be warding off the allergen altogether. If this isn't feasible, different remedies consist of cool water baths with medicated shampoo, antihistamines, allergic reaction shots, corticosteriods or a food plan rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
Flea allergic reactions
dog hypersensitive reactions to fleas aren't caused by the flea itself, however instead the flea's saliva. A common symptom of flea hypersensitive reactions is scratching at the tail place which causes hair loss, scabs and sores. Your vet can easily diagnose a flea allergy by way of checking for the presence of fleas inside the coat. Fleas can be seen via the naked eye. Intradermal pores and skin testing can also be used to test for this form of allergy. The most effective merchandise for doing away with fleas are:
advantage - Flea control in your dog & CatFrontLine - Flea & Tick
medicine to your dog & Cat
Capstar- Flea infestation on dog and Cat
K9 Advantix Flea and Tick medication (based totally on dog's weight)
Bacterial hypersensitive reactions
A dog's pores and skin usually harbors Staph bacteria. commonly, this bacteria does no longer have any have an effect on on your dog however a few puppies broaden a sensitivity to it causing an hypersensitivity. Your canine may additionally expand crusts at the pores and skin and patches of hair loss due to scratching, just like ring computer virus. If these patches come to be inflamed, your dog will want to be treated with antibiotics.
contact allergic reactions
touch allergies are the least not unusual of all canine allergic reactions. This form of hypersensitivity produces swelling, redness, itching and hair loss. commonplace contact allergens consist of flea collars, plastic meals bowls, pet sweaters, plant life, grass or wool bedding. The exceptional manner to diagnose this allergic reaction is if the symptoms keep after ruling out all other allergic reactions. If that is the case, then you definitely have to pinpoint the allergen and do away with it out of your canine's surroundings.

Best Flea and Tick Pills for Dogs
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/13198-magnification-of-a-female-flea-pv-300x236.jpg
On a recent phone call with my sister, we were talking about our dogs. I know…surprise, surprise. The topic of flea control came up.
“I’m thinking about putting my dog on a pill.”
“Oh, yeah? Wait a minute. I thought she was fixed. Why would she need the pill?”
It’s a good thing my sister is pretty.
Oral Flea Medication
I explained to her that oral flea medication (A pill, not THE pill) is the most effective type of treatment and prevention available. You can avoid the messy residue that drops and flea collars leave behind.
It won’t stain your clothes, rugs, or furniture, and no more having to separate animals during the application process.
One of the advantages of this type of flea medications is that the pills can work as soon as four hours from ingestion.
They also come in chewable tablets for dogs who have trouble taking pills.  Some may last longer than a typical one-month application.
Some flea medications are available in combinations with heartworm or tick preventatives, reducing the amount of pills you have to get your dog to ingest as well as the amount of money flowing out of your pockets.
The disadvantages are that these oral flea meds for dogs may require a vet’s prescription, and most do not guard against ticks or other parasites.
Another issue is that they can kill adult fleas OR flea eggs but usually not both. Because of this, pills are often used in conjunction with drops as the pills kill the current pests and the drops prevent new ones from breeding throughout the flea’s life cycle.
Best Flea Pills for Dogs
Depending on your situation, pills can be a great choice for keeping your dog safe from harmful parasites.
Be sure to choose carefully, however, because while some medications prevent future infestations, others only kill current ones. And don’t forget to treat your yard for fleas as well as treating your home for fleas to help prevent reinfestation.
Used in tandem with another method like flea drops, these can be very effective at keeping your pet flea free. This one-two punch is one of the best flea treatment options available.
Flea killing pills for dogs can be divided into two basic categories, prescription and over-the-counter.
Over-the-Counter Flea Pills

Sentry CapGuard Flea Tablets
This is a once a day tablet to get rid of current infestations. It can start working in as little as 30 minutes and is very effective.
If you are struggling to get ahead on your flea problem, this is a good way to wipe out the adult fleas who are laying eggs and start on a prevention method to keep them from coming back.
The CapGuard name may be misleading since it doesn’t actually “guard” but rather kills but these pills are very effective at exterminating the buggers.
Keeping a few tabs on hand in case your mutt brings home some unwanted friends is a good idea.
The pricing is also very reasonable.

Flea Away – The Natural Repellent
Unlike CapGuard, Flea Away, as its name suggests, repels fleas rather than killing them. It also repels ticks and mosquitoes.
Topical medications like drops act by poisoning the insect when it bites your pet’s skin. However, this product keeps the buggers from ever biting your pooch in the first place.
If your canine is allergic to insect bites, waiting until the pest sinks its teeth in can still cause problems. These pills are a great alternative to that.
The tablets come in a chewable form and are liver flavored to make administering them a pleasant experience rather than trying to shove a pill down your dog’s throat.
These are particularly handy when you plan on going into wooded areas like camping trips to keep the bloodsuckers off your dog. And at around $15 for 100 tablets, they’re relatively inexpensive.
Of course, the downside to pills like these is that you have to give your dog a pill up to three times a day, depending on its size.

Novartis Capstar Flea Tablets
CapGuard from Sentry and CapStar from Novartis are very similar not only in name but also how they work. CapStar also only treats but does not prevent, flea infestations.
These are used when you have an outbreak that normal methods like shampoos, spray, and bombs can’t fix. Usually prescribed by your vet, CapStar can be bought without a prescription, often at a lower price.
A few things to note:
You will want to keep an eye on your dog for a few hours after giving him the pill.
Fleas tend to bite hard while dying so your pup may act erratically for a while.
Make sure not to stay too close in case the fleas decide to jump ship and start biting you. It’s not a pleasant experience.
Give your dog plenty of water as CapStar can cause dry mouth.

PetArmor FastCaps
There is very little, if any, difference between PetArmor FastCaps and CapGuard or CapStar. All three use the same active ingredient (Nitenpyram), all three act within 30 minutes, and all three last up to 24 hours.
PetArmor also only works on fleas and is not effective in preventing re-infestation.
Unlike its topical treatment, FastCaps isn’t any cheaper than its competitors and actually is a little bit more expensive.
The big difference between PetArmor and Novartis or Sentry is the amount of Nitenpyram they use. For dogs over 25 pounds, CapStar and CapGuard have 57 mg while FastCaps has 54 mg.
So if you’re using PetArmor and it doesn’t seem to be working well enough, you might want to switch to one of the other brands with a higher dosage. On the other hand, if your pet has too much of a reaction from the other meds, trying FastCaps may be a good option.

Bravecto Chews
Bravecto is a chewable pill that is only needed to be given to your dog once every twelve weeks.
This kind of pill kills fleas at all stages of life including new fleas the jump onto the dog before they can lay eggs.  This chewable medication also kills four common ticks that attach onto dogs:
American Dog Tick
Brown Dog Tick
Black-legged Tick (Deer Tick)
The Lone Star Tick.

You do not have to give the dog monthly pills which decreases the chances of missing a pill due to the longer duration of the medication.
It kills all of the life stages of fleas.
This is a flea and tick combination to help use fewer chemicals on the dog.
Disadvantages
This medication is available through prescription only.
It does not kill every kind of tick out there.  The killing effect Bravecto has on ticks only lasts for up to eight weeks.  You may need to add tick repellent or drops in between doses.
Ticks and fleas need to bite the dogs, skin in order for the medication to work on killing them.
youtube
Nexgard
Nexgard is another chewable flea and tick preventative.  It’s a monthly pill administered to dogs.
This flea pill also covers deer ticks, American dog tick, and lone star tick.
Nexgard works on killing all of the flea’s cycles.

youtube
Flea and Heartworm Combo Meds
I would be remiss to do a post about flea meds without mentioning some of the popular medications pet owners have found useful which are the flea meds combined with heartworm prevention.  These are monthly chewable pills like Trifexis, Sentinel, and Sentinel Spectrum.
Each pill can prevent the infestation of heartworms along with killing different life cycles of fleas.  Along with heartworms the pills also protect the dogs from round, whip, and hook worms.  Sentinel Spectrum also has an included ingredient to help treat a dog for tapeworms.
Advantages
It’s only one pill to give to your dog instead of a separate flea pill and heartworm pill.
Some of these combo pills start killing fleas within 30 minutes of use.
Disadvantages
These pills don’t protect against ticks.
Trifexis pills only kill the adult cycle of fleas.  Sentinel and Sentinel Spectrum only kill flea eggs and larvae.
You must also have the dog checked for heartworms before administering this medication to your pup.  If your pet is heartworm positive, you can’t give them these kinds of pills.
In Conclusion
As you can see, there are many choices of medications that can help you get rid of your dog’s fleas.
The best choice for you depends on what your location is, what infestations you are looking to get rid of, and what will work best with your dog’s needs.
When giving your dog new medication it is best to watch the dog in the first few hours to make sure an allergic reaction to the meds does not occur.  Most side effects of these medications can be throwing up, itching skin, sluggishness, and diarrhea.
If vomiting occurs within an hour of you giving your dog the medication you will want to give your dog another full dose.  It is best to communicate with your veterinarian about what medication is the best choice for you and your dog’s fleas.

Get Your Dog Ready for Spring! How to Prep for Seasonal Parasites, Diseases and Allergies
#Poop4U
The post Get Your Dog Ready for Spring! How to Prep for Seasonal Parasites, Diseases and Allergies by Arden Moore appeared first on Dogster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren't considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Dogster.com.
Springtime ushers in such pleasantries as the welcome sight of butterflies doing ballet-like moves in the sky, the sweet fragrance of flowers blooming and the sounds of happy birds chirping. But there is a dangerous, dark side to spring, especially for your dog.
Unchecked and unprotected, your dog can be bombarded by fleas and ticks as well as develop heartworm, leptospirosis, Lyme disease and, yep, hot spots.
Fortunately, help is here. For starters, Dogster sought answers from arguably the world’s leading authority on fleas and ticks — Michael Dryden, DVM, PhD, aka Dr. Flea. He earned what is believed to be the world’s first doctorate degree in the study of fleas from Purdue University nearly 30 years ago and has been the go-to expert testing the generations of flea and tick preventives on the market ever since.
“Many medications today that deal with fleas, ticks and heartworm disease work well, but the best one is the one that the dog owner uses consistently,” says Dr. Dryden, distinguished professor of veterinary parasitology at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. “We need to get away from a seasonal approach to controlling parasites and get into the habit of using preventives year-round on dogs no matter where you live.”
Fending off fleas and ticks
Fleas are hardy survivalists. Consider these flea facts: Flea eggs can drop out of the hair of a trespassing raccoon or opossum in your backyard and survive for eight weeks and then land on your dog. A female flea that lands on your dog can lay up to 50 eggs a day.
Fleas can put your dog at risk of developing anemia, flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworm and other conditions.
“The good news is in the war against fleas and ticks, we are in good stead,” Dr. Dryden says. “The new generation of flea and tick products are remarkable at the speed of killing fleas not only when first given, but throughout the duration of the label. The key is following the label instructions and using consistently.”
Just some of these products include chewables NexGard and Bravecto, topicals K9 Advantage II and Frontline Plus as well as Capstar pills and Seresto collars that fend off fleas and ticks for up to eight months when worn properly — not too loose around the dog’s neck.
What about the effectiveness of non-commercial flea/tick products, such as the use of diatomaceous earth, borax or beneficial nematodes (worms) or giving yeast and garlic supplements to dogs to repel fleas and ticks?
“Back in the late 1990s, we went through a battery of tests to try to validate these, but there have been no scientific studies to date that show any significant benefits of these holistic options on fleas and ticks,” Dr. Dryden says.

Dogs are at risk for a host of diseases transmitted by ticks, with Lyme disease ranking among the most common type. A tick will attach onto a dog, bite it and release bacteria into the bloodstream, resulting in fever, lameness, joint swelling and enlarged lymph nodes. Untreated, Lyme disease can shut down the kidneys and cause death.
Dr. Dryden urges pet parents to get into the habit of doing a thorough head-to-tail inspection of their dogs after a walk in the woods or heavily treed area. Ticks like to hide in a dog’s lips, ears and between the toes. And, don’t stop checking just because it’s cold outside. Ticks can be active all year long, especially if the temperature is above freezing; deer ticks actually become active after the first frost.
“Ticks are harder to kill than fleas, and a dog can encounter 50 or more ticks from running in the woods,” Dr. Dryden says. “It may surprise people, but ticks are not able to leap, jump or fly. They wait on shrubs, grass and bushes for an animal or person to go by and grab on. They attach within 10 minutes but may take hours to bite and transmit pathogens like Lyme disease.”
He continues, “Using fingernail polish or Vaseline to remove a tick do not work. The best way to remove a tick is to grab it with tweezers close to the skin and pull straight out. Do not twist it. And always wash your hands thoroughly afterward.”
Heartworm is a sneaky disease
The war on heartworm disease continues to be challenging. Untreated, heartworms growing in a dog can cause heart failure, lung damage and death. Cases of dogs infected with heartworm have been reported in every state, according to the American Heartworm Association. People can see a flea or a tick on their dogs and react immediately, but heartworm is more of a hidden disease with clinical signs that develop slowly, Dr. Dryden says. “We need to find a more technology-driven way to remind people to give their dogs heartworm preventives consistently for their entire lives.”
ProHeart 12 is a yearly injectable that prevents heartworm disease. There are also monthly chewable preventives, such as Heartgard Plus and Interceptor Plus as well as topical spot-on medications, such as Advantage Multi Topical Solution and Revolution Topical Solution. All are available as prescriptions from veterinarians.
Dealing with Leptospirosis
A sneaky, dangerous bacteria lurking in your backyard is Leptospira. This hardy bacteria is spread by wildlife exposed to contaminated urine and other sources. It burrows into the skin or is inhaled through the nose and spreads through the bloodstream to damage the kidneys, liver, blood vessels and lungs.
This bacterial infection (leptospirosis) is also zoonotic, meaning your infected dog can infect you, too, if you do not practice good hygiene habits after cleaning up any urine messes in the house made by your dog.
“Even if you use paper towels to clean up the mess, still wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap,” says Mike LoSasso, DVM, emergency medicine veterinarian and chief of staff at Frisco Emergency Pet Care in Frisco, Texas. “Leptospirosis is a very serious disease, especially in people who are immune-compromised. Why take the risk?”

To protect your dog, make sure he receives the leptospirosis vaccine each year.
“This is not a ‘core’ or mandatory vaccine, but I think at this point, it should be,” Dr. LoSasso says.
Stopping the scratch and itch
Some dogs develop environmental allergies that can worsen in the spring and trigger incessant scratching and licking that lead to conditions such as wet scabs on the skin known as hot spots. Flea bites, matted hair and allergic reactions to grasses, molds or pollen can cause hot spots.
Check with your veterinarian for the best treatment plan for your dog. Topical and oral antibiotics or hydrocortisone sprays or creams may be prescribed. Natural options include applying calendula cream or lotion or black tea on the site.

Keep your dog from developing a dry, itchy coat by using pet shampoos with safe, mild herbs, and steer away from ones containing harsh chemicals on the ingredient label.
Still not sure how to handle these spring spoilers? Just talk to your veterinarian or seek out a holistic veterinarian if you prefer a more natural approach to guide you. Be prepared, and don’t let spring spring one on you and your dog. Work with your veterinarian to keep these pests, diseases and hot spots as a short spring shower in your otherwise sunny spring days.
