There are many things I enjoy living in Minnesota, but the flea population isn’t one of them.
According to WebMD, Minnesota has one of the larger flea populations in the United States[1].
One good thing is fleas aren’t very hearty when it comes to the cold, so it is less likely dogs will get fleas in the colder months. Flea season in Minnesota is traditionally April through November.
Unfortunately, flea season is getting worse because our winters aren’t as severe and our warmer seasons are getting longer.
Also, if a flea is attached to a host in the winter, the host keeps the flea warm enough to continue to survive and procreate.
So, what do we do when you live in an area flush with fleas?
In our house, we use a variety of preventatives in our home for a few different reasons.
My two youngest dogs take Bravecto Chews every three months, whereas my two older girls get Frontline applied every month.
The reason why we use different methods is due to the various health issues in our home.
Also, we have chosen Bravecto and Frontline because they also help the fight against ticks, which is also an issue in our area.

How Do Flea Pills and Tablets Work?
Oral flea medications kill adult fleas, preventing them from laying eggs.
Most oral flea medications last at least 30 days and can be used to both prevent and treat flea infestations.
However, there is a treatment, Capstar, that’s solely used to manage flea infestations, and it only lasts 24 hours.
Most flea medications kill fleas by inhibiting aspects of their nervous systems, causing paralysis then death.
Simparica (Sarolaner)
Active Ingredients – Sarolaner[2]

Which One to Use and When
There are a variety of different flea products on the market because there isn’t just one flea solution that will work with every situation.
Factors like your dog’s age, health, and activity level all play into which flea product would be best for your situation.
Scenario 1: Your Dog LOVES the Water
Hartz does make a water-resistant flea collar, though it won’t be as water resistant as other options
If your dog enjoys swimming and does so frequently, a flea collar may not be the best choice.
Many flea collars state that exposure to water is not recommended more than once a month.
In this situation, it would be best to consider using an oral medication or spot-on type treatment.
Oral medications do not have any water restrictions.
Topical treatments do not recommend exposure to water for 48 hours after application, but then do not have any water restrictions for the balance of the month.
Scenario 2: You Have a New Puppy and Want to Avoid Fleas
Flea products have different age ratings, so if you just picked up an eight-week-old puppy, then the best option is topical treatment.
Most spot-on treatments are safe to use with puppies eight weeks old and up.
Scenario 3: You Live in an Area That Fleas Aren’t a Problem, but Plan on Visiting an Area with a High Flea Population
Because your pet doesn’t require long term treatment, a spot-on or spray-on treatment would be best.
Just be sure to apply it in advance of traveling so that it has time to absorb into your dog’s skin and bloodstream.
Scenario 4: Your Pooch Has Fleas
Unfortunately, fleas happen.
Fleas love dog beds. Use flea control sprays to keep them away!
One time, I picked up a foster dog from animal control and she had fleas.
The first thing I did was to call my vet and get Capstar. Capstar works quickly and effectively to get rid of fleas.
The second thing I did after giving my foster Capstar was to apply Frontline.
After an hour, I felt safe to bring her home, but I did use flea spray on the dog’s bedding in my car and my house.
Using all three products avoided a flea infestation in my home while at the same time ridding my foster of her pesky fleas.
Side Note When Using Multiple Flea Products
Some products are safe to use together.
However, it’s always safest to consult your vet before combining products since overexposure to pesticides can cause toxicity issues in your dog.
Final Thoughts
Don’t forget to get a yard spray to protect your dog from bringing fleas in from outside!
If I could give any pet parent one piece of advice when it comes to fleas, it would be to use a flea preventative.
Avoiding a flea problem is, by far, the easiest way to deal with flea issues. Flea preventatives might seem pricey, but in truth, they are a lot cheaper than dealing with a flea infestation in your home!
I know there are many flea products on the market which can make it challenging to know which product would work best.

Say Goodbye to the Fleas | CanadaVet Pet Supplies
As the weather starts to warm up, fleas build up in numbers. These wingless bloodsucking insects cause itching, scratching, allergies, anemia and transmit tapeworms in our pets. Effective flea control involves treating the fleas on the pet as well as in the environment and should commence now if you don’t already have a flea plan in place. Preventative action all year round is of course the best way to stop any fleas building up to uncontrollable levels.
The adult flea spends most of its life on your dog or cat, feeding on its blood and laying eggs. However, the majority of the flea population exists as eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment. In fact for every flea on a dog or cat there are 20 off the animal. They live in the dirt, in your pet's bedding, in cracks or crevices around the house or in the carpet. The flea life-cycle can be as short as 2 weeks in warm weather and flea numbers can build up rapidly if preventative measures are not taken, both on and off your pet.
Flea Control on your Pet
There are a number of very effective flea treatments available to purchase. Different treatments work best for different pets and living circumstances so you may have to try a few before you find one that is best suited to your situation.
Flea powders are an older treatment method. They need frequent application.
Flea collars work well to provide continuous cover when the flea burden is low and your pet does not swim much or comes in contact with many other animals.
Flea shampoos will kill the fleas on the pet at the time of washing however have no residual effect, so usually need to be used with other products.
Flea rinses such as the Permoxin wash are very effective, and have up to 7 days residual effect. In very bad flea infestations, Permoxin can be applied to dogs daily for 2 weeks until the flea numbers are knocked down, and then weekly or twice weekly as required. Permoxin cannot be used on cats.
'Spot-ons' such as Frontline Plus, Advantage, Advocate (Advantage Multi), Advantix or Revolution are monthly treatments, safe and easy to use. Some have the added advantage of also covering for other diseases such as heartworm, or ticks and mites.
Oral tablets which either kill the adult fleas such as Proban or Capstar, or tablets such as Program which contain an IGR or insect growth regulator which stops the flea eggs from hatching in the environment.
Flea control off your Pet
Flea control off your pet is very important to quickly and effectively control fleas. Treating the house and yard will help eliminate the 95% of fleas that are not living on your pet.
Frequent vacuuming of the carpets and washing of your pets bedding will physically remove many of the young fleas.
Flea bombs, foggers or mists contain insecticides and IGR's to control the egg, larval and pupae stages of the flea lifecycle for up to 12 months.
Yard sprays or rinses can be applied outdoors, around kennels, under trees, stairs or other favorite places that your pet likes to spend a lot of their time.
Always read the directions carefully and apply all treatments as per the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure that you pick a suitable and safe product for your pet. Many flea products made for dogs are highly toxic to cats and cannot be used on them. Remember to treat all animals in the environment.

“Many medications today that deal with fleas, ticks and heartworm disease work well, but the best one is the one that the dog owner uses consistently,” says Dr. Dryden, distinguished professor of veterinary parasitology at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. “We need to get away from a seasonal approach to controlling parasites and get into the habit of using preventives year-round on dogs no matter where you live.”
Fending off fleas and ticks
Fleas are hardy survivalists. Consider these flea facts: Flea eggs can drop out of the hair of a
trespassing raccoon or opossum in your backyard and survive for eight weeks and then land on your dog. A female flea that lands on your dog can lay up to 50 eggs a day.
Fleas can put your dog at risk of developing anemia, flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworm and other conditions.
“The good news is in the war against fleas and ticks, we are in good stead,” Dr. Dryden says. “The new generation of flea and tick products are remarkable at the speed of killing fleas not only when first given, but throughout the duration of the label. The key is following the label instructions and using consistently.”
Just some of these products include chewables NexGard and Bravecto, topicals K9 Advantage II and Frontline Plus as well as Capstar pills and Seresto collars that fend off fleas and ticks for up to eight months when worn properly — not too loose around the dog’s neck.
What about the effectiveness of non-commercial flea/tick products, such as the use of diatomaceous earth, borax or beneficial nematodes (worms) or giving yeast and garlic supplements to dogs to repel fleas and ticks?
“Back in the late 1990s, we went through a battery of tests to try to validate these, but there have been no scientific studies to date that show any significant benefits of these holistic options on fleas and ticks,” Dr. Dryden says.

Dogs are at risk for a host of diseases transmitted by ticks, with Lyme disease ranking among the most common type. A tick will attach onto a dog, bite it and release bacteria into the bloodstream, resulting in fever, lameness, joint swelling and enlarged lymph nodes. Untreated, Lyme disease can shut down the kidneys and cause death.
Dr. Dryden urges pet parents to get into the habit of doing a thorough head-to-tail inspection of their dogs after a walk in the woods or heavily treed area. Ticks like to hide in a dog’s lips, ears and between the toes. And, don’t stop checking just because it’s cold outside. Ticks can be active all year long, especially if the temperature is above freezing; deer ticks actually become active after the first frost.
“Ticks are harder to kill than fleas, and a dog can encounter 50 or more ticks from running in the woods,” Dr. Dryden says. “It may surprise people, but ticks are not able to leap, jump or fly. They wait on shrubs, grass and bushes for an animal or person to go by and grab on. They attach within 10 minutes but may take hours to bite and transmit pathogens like Lyme disease.”
He continues, “Using fingernail polish or Vaseline to remove a tick do not work. The best way to remove a tick is to grab it with tweezers close to the skin and pull straight out. Do not twist it. And always wash your hands thoroughly afterward.”
Heartworm is a sneaky disease
The war on heartworm disease continues to be challenging. Untreated, heartworms growing in a dog can cause heart failure, lung damage and death. Cases of dogs infected with heartworm have been reported in every state, according to the American Heartworm Association. People can see a flea or a tick on their dogs and react immediately, but heartworm is more of a hidden disease with clinical signs that develop slowly, Dr. Dryden says. “We need to find a more technology-driven way to remind people to give their dogs heartworm preventives consistently for their entire lives.”
ProHeart 12 is a yearly injectable that prevents heartworm disease. There are also monthly chewable preventives, such as Heartgard Plus and Interceptor Plus as well as topical spot-on medications, such as Advantage Multi Topical Solution and Revolution Topical Solution. All are available as prescriptions from veterinarians.
Dealing with Leptospirosis
A sneaky, dangerous bacteria lurking in your backyard is Leptospira. This hardy bacteria is spread by wildlife exposed to contaminated urine and other sources. It burrows into the skin or is inhaled through the nose and spreads through the bloodstream to damage the kidneys, liver, blood vessels and lungs.
This bacterial infection (leptospirosis) is also zoonotic, meaning your infected dog can infect you, too, if you do not practice good hygiene habits after cleaning up any urine messes in the house made by your dog.
“Even if you use paper towels to clean up the mess, still wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap,” says Mike LoSasso, DVM, emergency medicine veterinarian and chief of staff at Frisco Emergency Pet Care in Frisco, Texas. “Leptospirosis is a very serious disease, especially in people who are immune-compromised. Why take the risk?”

To protect your dog, make sure he receives the leptospirosis vaccine each year.
“This is not a ‘core’ or mandatory vaccine, but I think at this point, it should be,” Dr. LoSasso says.
Stopping the scratch and itch
Some dogs develop environmental allergies that can worsen in the spring and trigger incessant scratching and licking that lead to conditions such as wet scabs on the skin known as hot spots. Flea bites, matted hair and allergic reactions to grasses, molds or pollen can cause hot spots.
Check with your veterinarian for the best treatment plan for your dog. Topical and oral antibiotics or hydrocortisone sprays or creams may be prescribed. Natural options include applying calendula cream or lotion or black tea on the site.

Keep your dog from developing a dry, itchy coat by using pet shampoos with safe, mild herbs, and steer away from ones containing harsh chemicals on the ingredient label.
