Say Goodbye to the Fleas | CanadaVet Pet Supplies

As the weather starts to warm up, fleas build up in numbers. These wingless bloodsucking insects cause itching, scratching, allergies, anemia and transmit tapeworms in our pets. Effective flea control involves treating the fleas on the pet as well as in the environment and should commence now if you don’t already have a flea plan in place. Preventative action all year round is of course the best way to stop any fleas building up to uncontrollable levels.

The adult flea spends most of its life on your dog or cat, feeding on its blood and laying eggs. However, the majority of the flea population exists as eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment. In fact for every flea on a dog or cat there are 20 off the animal. They live in the dirt, in your pet's bedding, in cracks or crevices around the house or in the carpet. The flea life-cycle can be as short as 2 weeks in warm weather and flea numbers can build up rapidly if preventative measures are not taken, both on and off your pet.

Flea Control on your Pet

There are a number of very effective flea treatments available to purchase. Different treatments work best for different pets and living circumstances so you may have to try a few before you find one that is best suited to your situation.

Flea powders are an older treatment method. They need frequent application.

Flea collars work well to provide continuous cover when the flea burden is low and your pet does not swim much or comes in contact with many other animals.

Flea shampoos will kill the fleas on the pet at the time of washing however have no residual effect, so usually need to be used with other products.

Flea rinses such as the Permoxin wash are very effective, and have up to 7 days residual effect. In very bad flea infestations, Permoxin can be applied to dogs daily for 2 weeks until the flea numbers are knocked down, and then weekly or twice weekly as required. Permoxin cannot be used on cats.

'Spot-ons' such as Frontline Plus, Advantage, Advocate (Advantage Multi), Advantix or Revolution are monthly treatments, safe and easy to use. Some have the added advantage of also covering for other diseases such as heartworm, or ticks and mites.

Oral tablets which either kill the adult fleas such as Proban or Capstar, or tablets such as Program which contain an IGR or insect growth regulator which stops the flea eggs from hatching in the environment.

Flea control off your Pet

Flea control off your pet is very important to quickly and effectively control fleas. Treating the house and yard will help eliminate the 95% of fleas that are not living on your pet.

Frequent vacuuming of the carpets and washing of your pets bedding will physically remove many of the young fleas.

Flea bombs, foggers or mists contain insecticides and IGR's to control the egg, larval and pupae stages of the flea lifecycle for up to 12 months.

Yard sprays or rinses can be applied outdoors, around kennels, under trees, stairs or other favorite places that your pet likes to spend a lot of their time.

Always read the directions carefully and apply all treatments as per the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure that you pick a suitable and safe product for your pet. Many flea products made for dogs are highly toxic to cats and cannot be used on them. Remember to treat all animals in the environment.
