Hey I'm watching the new defunctland on kid cities and he mentions that in wannado city there was a pretend vet with realistic animatronic pets that kids could roleplay with
I was wondering if you possibly have more info, pictures or videos of these animatronics? I know it's a long shot but still I'm curious
I actually went to Wannado several times as a kid, but I don't remember the vet; it might have been added after I stopped going, though.
It was sponsored by Frontline and Heartgard, possibly others as well, and the animatronics were likely professional training dummies. The hospital and dentist sections had actual medical dummies, so I'd assume the same for the vet.
Here's a brief clip of a dog animatronic breathing!

Heartgard
One of the more unfortunate things my pharmacy sells is pet medications. There aren’t many, but what we do have is a source of untold problems.
Lady comes up to the window, and because I live to make the customer smile, I ask how I can help her.
She asks for a box of Heartgard. This requires a prescription so I ask if she brought a prescription with her or if we have it on file.
She lets me know that Heartgard does not require a prescription.
Oh but it does.
I let her know that it indeed does require a prescription.
Then, in a desperate attempt to murder me where I stood, she let loose a blast of stupid so powerful my brain made the windows 97 shutdown sound and I’m still struggling to recover.
“If it requires a prescription, why don’t I need one when I buy it from my vet?”
I wanted to be snarky. I wanted to shame her. Instead I stood there looking like I was suddenly hit with total amnesia and forgot how to speak.
By the time my brain had finished the restart it desperately needed she had told me she was just going to get the meds from her vet and thanks for nothing.
The pharmacy manager, who was standing not 4 feet away from me, actually commended me for at least attempting to give good service. He didn’t seem to realize I was restarting and couldn’t properly mock her for her stupidity.
Why don’t you need a prescription to get meds from your vet? I don’t fucking know, probably has nothing to do with the vet being the prescriber and it making zero fucking sense to give you a prescription to give back to the vet instead of putting it on the dog’s file. But what the fuck do I know. -J

Heartworm prevention is only effective on heartworm larvae younger than a certain age, which is why the standard kind has to be given monthly.
We can only test for fully adult heartworms, which means about 6 months after the mosquito transmits them - so there's a blind spot when you start prevention where you *could* be infected and too late to prevent but too early to detect. This is why most places still retest regularly even when you're on prevention.
How long does ivermectin (heartworm prevention) stay in a dogs system?
vet-and-wild here.
I'll give a little caveat that I'm most familiar with Heartgard, because that's what my clinic uses. Heartworm medication basically works by back-treating infections before the larvae can grow and cause disease. This is different than how most flea/tick meds work, because those are providing forward prevention. Meaning, when you give heartworm medication you're basically treating for the previous 30 days (or whatever the product is labeled for). Conversely, flea/tick meds are treating for the following 30 (or whatever) days. So heartworm meds aren't really in the system for very long.
Keep in mind that this is different from something like ProHeart, which has a different active ingredient (moxidectin). ProHeart shots work more like standard flea/tick meds that provide protection forward from the point of administration.
#To clarify: proheart binds the moxidectin into “slow-dissolving microspheres”#Moxidectin is also found in other heartworm preventatives that work similarly heartgard or interceptor#It's the fancy slow-release mechanism that makes it special#But it doesn't offer the same intestinal parasite control as oral options

Could she be getting into a contaminated water source somehow? My dog had giardia when I got her (from drinking stagnant water at her foster home) and it took two months to go away fully.
The severity of the hookworms suggest that she has had hookworms for a very long time. This matches up with what we do know about her past- there are photos of her being out of her crate and in the yard when she was younger, all the way up to about a year old, so she was either not 24/7 crated until more recently or she was 24/7 crated but the few times she was let out of the crate was when she was let out into the dirty, contaminated yard. The dogs in similar condition who the state had to remove from this person also had a variety of parasites including hookworm so likely that’s the source of the problem.
The problem with hookworm is multifaceted. It’s A PAIN IN THE ASS to get rid of because as the name suggests the worms hook onto the dog’s intestinal lining and do not want to let go. Hooks also live higher up in the GI tract where it’s more difficult for wormers to be effective. They can live in the soil for years and can come up through the soil into the skin of your dog’s feet to reinfect- they can also come up into your feet if you walk through contaminated ground barefoot, though canine hookworm rarely lives in human bodies. And, finally, these particular hookworms have now survived two rounds of dontrol and two rounds of panacur and four rounds of heartgard, which means they are resistant to worming medication and will continue to be incredibly annoying to be fully rid of until they’re 100% gone.
Floppy ear girly at the vet for Bad Poops yet again

The Story of Theo and his Heartworms
Theo is a two year old Tibetan Spaniel that was adopted by his family from a rescue in New Mexico. Theo has adjusted to his new family very well. His family provided him with good medical care, including his vaccinations and was started on heartworm prevention. During Theo’s annual exam a heartworm test was performed and was positive for heartworm antigen. This was double checked at a reference laboratory and confirmed to be a true positive for adult heartworms. Theo most likely became infected with heartworms prior to his adoption and being started on heartworm prevention. Theo’s family allowed us to take chest Xrays to evaluate his lungs and heart; both of which appeared normal. We also did bloodwork and found that his liver and kidney values were normal.
Theo ‘s owners decided that they would have him treated for heartworm disease. He was started on an antibiotic for a bacteria called Wolbachia, that is commonly found living on the heartworms. This treatment helps decrease inflammation in the vascular system and lungs. Theo was also started on a steroid called prednisolone due to him having a cough, this is not uncommon in heartworm patients. The steroid can help decrease lung inflammation. Theo continued to take his heartworm prevention to keep him from becoming infected with the immature heartworms called microfilaria. He then was treated with heartworm adulticide injections called Melarsomine to kill the adult heartworms. Theo handled the adulticide injections well. He will have a heartworm test in 9 months to confirm that the adult heartworms were completely eliminated from his body. He will continue on heartworm prevention year round for the rest of his life and will have periodic heartworm testing throughout his lifetime to make sure the heartworm prevention is working well.
