A Beginner’s Guide to Tokusatsu

Hey, I know some of you are probably wondering about all these hero shows I’m constantly posting about. Maybe you want to try watching them too, but don’t know where to start? Well, look no further. I’m here to go over some accessible, and legal, means of checking out some of my favorite things!

for the OTHER means, you’ll have to DM me or send me an ask. I’m not getting my favorite sites shut down. You know the drill.

This guide will mainly focus on the big 3 Toku franchises, Toei’s Kamen Rider and Super Sentai as well as Tsuburaya’s Ultraman.

What Is Tokusatsu?

Tokusatsu is a genre of Japanese shows and movies that literally translates to “Special Effects”. Usually using a combination of monster or hero suits, practical effects like explosions, and light CGI.

That’s a REALLY wide net, so we’re just gonna focus on 3 shows today.

Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman. Thanks to @urotandersentai​ for drawing this neat little guide to the Visual Design of each of these 3 shows.

With that out of the way, let’s look at some individual seasons of these shows. Each one has a link to where you can watch it!

Please remember that at the end of the day, the best way to pick a show to watch is “Whatever looks coolest to you”. As such, I’ve included pictures!!!

Super Sentai

You might be saying, “This looks like Power Rangers!” And you’d be right!

Super Sentai, created by Shotaro Ishinomori and produced by Toei Productions, is kinda like Power Rangers’ Dad. PR has been using suits and even fight footage from Super Sentai to tell its own stories for 30 years. All this time, though, Sentai has been creating lovable and memorable casts of colorful heroes.

Generally, Super Sentai is about a team of heroes in colorful costumes that fight monsters every week to protect people.

There’s tons of shows in this series that are available FOR FREE.

CHOUJIN SENTAI JETMAN (1991)

The Earth is under siege from the Dimensional War Party Vyram. A special squadron is selected for an experiment to turn them into Super Humans with the powers of Birds, the Birdman Squadron Jetman. Vyram interferes with the experiment and kills all but one of the Jetman recruits. Instead, civilians are transformed and tasked with defending the Earth. The surviving recruit, Ryu Tendo, must convince 4 normal people with drastically different backgrounds to fight with him.

Jetman has the typical monster of the week format for Super Sentai, but when the team isn’t battling monsters, there’s some serious drama going on. The five of them are all drastically different individuals. It can make it hard to work as a team. Especially when it comes Black Condor. Dude’s a loose canon and an absolute bastard of a man.

KYORYU SENTAI ZYURANGER (1992)

“From hundreds of millions of years ago, in the age of the dinosaurs, five warriors revive in the present time!”

When the Evil Witch Bandora awakens from her slumber, intent on terrorizing the Children of Earth, Five warriors from Dinosaur Times are unsealed to undo her schemes!

This one is where the suits for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came from, which might tempt you to watch it first. I kinda recommend against that, though. It’s a fine show but I personally found it a bit boring. The characterization of the main cast didn’t stick out as much compared to other Sentai.

GOSEI SENTAI DAIRANGER (1993)

I haven’t seen this one, but it’s focused on martial arts and one of their mechs is a cool dragon? so uhhh? Check them out? Their theme song fucks

NINJA SENTAI KAKURANGER (1994)

Ok listen I didn’t watch this one either. HOWEVER, I know that it’s about the descendants of 5 legendary ninja who have been fighting yokai for 400 years.

CHOURIKI SENTAI OHRANGER (1995)

This is the last sentai in the “I didn’t watch it” category. uhhh, watch it if the suits look cool. Sorry.

GEKISOU SENTAI CARRANGER (1996)

Five Mechanics use the power of Car Magic to protect the earth from the Universal Reckless Driving Tribe and teach children about Traffic Safety. This one’s a tad bit goofier compared to some of the others, but it’s a good time.

Also There’s a Yoda.

DENJI SENTAI MEGARANGER (1997)

Five High School Students are friends and pals! Together they investigate the mysterious goings on of a technologically advanced evil empire. They literally surf the net in order to bring peace to their city and the world!

SEIJUU SENTAI GINGAMAN (1998)

The warriors of Ginga Forest, the Gingamen, have protected nature for 132 Generations. This series follows the 133rd Generation of Gingamen, who battle alongside Starbeasts to stop the resurrection of the Demon Beast Ditanix!

KYUKYU SENTAI GOGOFIVE (1999)

This time, the rangers are an experienced team of rescue workers given super human power! They fight back Literal Demons From Hell that endanger the public. There’s a lot of focus specifically on rescuing civilians in this one, so if you’re an especially big fan of watching heroes... SAVE people, this is a great choice.

MIRAI SENTAI TIMERANGER (2000)

In the 30th Century, a gang of super criminals escapes to the year 2000. They are tracked down by the Future Sentai Timeranger, agents of the Time Defense Force. There, they encounter the Great(s) Grandfather of their departed leader and must convince him to fight alongside them for the sake of humanity.

HYAKUJU SENTAI GAORANGER (2001)

Veterinarian Kakeru Shishi can hear the hearts of every animal! He swiftly becomes enraptured in the adventures of the Gaorangers, who battle living embodiment of pollution. Also they live on a flying turtle! How cool is that?

NINPUU SENTAI HURRICANNEGER (2002)

What if there was a polycule of ninjas SO BAD at being Ninjas, they showed up to Ninja Class Late and were the only survivors of an attack on their school? These guys are the silliest little slackers, but they’ve got hearts of gold. Check them out? For me? :)

KAMEN RIDER

If Super Sentai is Power Rangers’ Dad, Kamen Rider is Power Rangers’ Uncle.

Kamen Rider was ALSO created by Shotaro Ishinomori.

Usually focused in on a smaller cast of heroes. A common theme in Rider is that the heroes are created by their villains and choose to rebel against them for the greater good, or will use the villain’s own powers against them.

Most Riders have a signature attack where they leap into the air and do a flying kick. These get INCREDIBLY flashy over the years.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot less Kamen Rider legally available than there are of the other two shows here. Don’t fret, it’s Easy Enough To Find Anyway.

KAMEN RIDER (1971)

This is the original series.

Takeshi Hongo is an augmented human being created by the evil organization Shocker. Escaping before his brainwashing can be completed, battles for humanity’s freedom as Kamen Rider.

Being such an old show, the effects can be dated and cheesy. It’s a bit of an acquired taste, but if you stick with it, I’m sure you’ll love it. You can watch most of the show in almost any order. The only really confusing part is that eventually, Hongo tags out with fellow escaped cyborg Ichimonji Hayato as Kamen Rider. (This was due to a real world injury to Hongo’s actor during filming. Don’t worry, he’s still kicking and he comes back later in the show!)

It’s also the longest Kamen Rider show, so I don’t fault you if you decide not to watch ALL of it. Even I haven’t yet.

KAMEN RIDER KUUGA (2000)

Kuuga was the first season of Rider after about a 5 year break on TV. It’s something of a return to form.

It follows Yusuke Godai, a world traveler with 2000 skills, visiting his home town for the first time in years. He finds himself in the middle of an ancient civilization’s ritualistic murder game. Donning the mantle of Kuuga, Godai fights to protect the smiles of the city. He has a wonderful supporting cast around him including Detective Ichijou, who he goes on to share a rather homoerotic bond with.

Kuuga was my first Rider Series and to this day, it represents the Bread and Butter of Kamen Rider to me. This one’s a bit of a slow-paced Drama, but its focus is on what it means to help others. Every episode, I felt like I was actively being encouraged to be a better person. Godai’s got this infectious positivity that can’t help but make you grin.

KAMEN RIDER RYUKI (2002)

Ryuki takes a rather different direction from the other shows on this list. Instead of being about a single hero battling monsters, it’s about Plucky Young Journalist Shinji Kido being wrapped up in an all-out war between Kamen Riders. Donning the mask of Ryuki, he seeks to put an end to the bloodshed. The other Kamen Riders aren’t nearly as cooperative, though.

Don’t think that this plot means these characters don’t get tons of humanizing moments though. They’re all delightful to watch in action and you’ll end up truly questioning who will win? Is it possible to end the Riders’ battle? Will Shinji have to take a life after all?

I cannot recommend Ryuki enough. A lot of the Rider series from the early 2000s are Dramas that feature super heroes and Ryuki takes that drama up to a 10. (Plus, if you wanna ask where to find it, there’s plentiful side content for this show.)

KAMEN RIDER ZERO-ONE (2019)

In the far-flung year of 2019, Hiden Intelligence has revolutionized AI technology. The company manufactures Robot Assistants called Humagears. People in all walks of life and profession benefit from their aid. Unfortunately, something is causing Humagears to go berserk and attack humans.

With the death of Hiden Intelligence’s president, Failed Comedian Aruto Hiden inherits the company. He’s given the Zero-One Driver, which allows him to fight the corrupted Humagears as Kamen Rider Zero-One. With this new power in hand, Aruto seeks a way forward where Humankind and AI can exist in harmony.

Come to think of it, this one’s kinda topical. “AI” is a subject we really aren’t gonna be getting rid of any time soon. This show is one of the more recent rider productions you can find legally and it SHOWS. Every suit is sleek and clean, the visuals are striking and flashy. If nothing else, Zero-One LOOKS incredible.

KAMEN RIDER GEATS (2022)

Kamen Riders compete in a game called the Desire Grand Prix. By fighting monsters and saving people for points, the winner can have their greatest desire granted. Ukiyo Ace, the titular Kamen Rider Geats, looks to unravel the mysteries behind the Grand Prix and reunite with his long-lost mother.

Things get a bit more complicated than that, but I think you should see it for yourself. I can’t recommend Geats enough. its visual style is a direct evolution of Zero One’s sleekness and flashiness. It’s main 4 characters are some of my favorites in recent years.

SHIN KAMEN RIDER (2023) (Paid)

Wait, that sounds really familiar. That’s because this is the latest in a series of Tokusatsu Reimaginings by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. This is a new take on the story of Kamen Rider 1971, modernized complete with sleeker suits and stunning music all wrapped up in a 2-hour movie. It also has plenty of Easter Eggs for those of us who are fans of the 1971 series or the Manga it’s based on!

Be warned, this one’s gorier than the other stuff on the list. It’s mostly exaggerated blood splatters, though. I hate that kind of stuff and I’m able to rewatch this movie.

KAMEN RIDER AMAZONS (2016) (Paid)

Amazons is another adult reimagining of a classic Kamen Rider show, but it’s so far removed you don’t really need to know much about the original to enjoy it.

Amazons follows a group of exterminators who have been tasked with eradicating escaped cannibalistic experiments called, well, Amazons. The catch is that they work together with 2 Amazons, Momoru the Mole Amazon, and Haruka, the titular Kamen Rider Amazons. Both of them are tasked with asking themselves ethical questions. Is it so wrong for Amazons to exist? Is it possible to avoid eating people? If it isn’t, then is it WRONG to eat people to survive?

ULTRAMAN

Ok, look, I’m gonna have to make a separate post covering all the free Ultraman stuff there is. Theres SO MUCH OF IT available that I don’t know where to start. We’re about to hit the image limit. If that post is done, it will be linked HERE.

But for a basic idea, there’s tons of stuff on Tubi and the official Ultraman Youtube Channel posts new episodes of the currently airing show.

Tell me about the half Indian half japanese oc!!!

ok sooooo, first up, warnings:

1)this character exists in the world of Kamen Rider Build

2)sorry for the infodump

His name is Vajra Arashi (or, as the Japanese would write it, Arashi Vajra). His name is literally supposed to be 'thunder storm'.

So, Vajra is the youngest son of Hiroshi Arashi and Ananya Kumar-Arashi. Hiroshi had gone to India for a long business expedition for his job, there he fell in love with Ananya. Ananya came to Japan after they got married. Back in Japan, Hiroshi already had a child from his first marriage, Reishi. Reishi's mother had died some years after his birth. But, Reishi happily accepted Ananya as his mother and Vajra, after he was born, as his younger brother. Reishi became a guardian and practically a guide for young Vajra.

[This next part is just canon lore to the actual show, being the basis for my character and the actual plot of the show]

But, the villain to this story is the company Hiroshi worked at, Nanba Heavy Industry. Nanba was a weapons manufacturing company, also responsible for researching on the Martian relic, the black cube dubbed Pandora Box. It was called so, because during the ceremony showcasing the discovery of the Box, it summoned a large wall, dubbed the Sky Wall, dividing Japan into three parts. These three grew into separate countries, Touto, Seito and Hokuto. The ground near the Sky Wall emitted a strange gas, dubbed Nebula Gas. This gas was harnessed by the terrorist group Faust to turn people of Touto into monsters, these monster's essence was extracted from them after defeating them. The essence was purified into little bottles called FullBottles, containing essences of various creatures and objects of Earth. In reality, Faust was a secretly owned by Nanba.

One fine day, while the Arashi family was out for a drive, they were attacked by someone, causing their car to crash. Hiroshi died, and Ananya was left comatose. Reishi and Vajra were taken in by Nanba Heavy Industries. All the two boys remembered about the attacker was that he was in a crimson suit (not like a tuxedo, like a sci fi suit).

Nanba took the two boys in was for their secret project, the Nanba Children. A group of orphans raised to be scientists, fighters and spies for Nanba (this is also canon, btw). But, not trusting them, the Arashi brothers ran away to a government orphanage after a few years of training. When they grew up, Vajra decided to run his mother's old bakery. But Reishi got a job which he refused to tell Vajra about. This is because he worked with Faust, with knowing what their intentions were.

After learning the truth, Reishi tried to run, but he got killed by s guy in a crimson suit in front of Vajra. Before running, Reishi had taken with him the Transteam gun and the Raven LostBottle, a special type of FullBottle. These were taken by Vajra and hidden. Later he was approached by the government of Touto to become their Kamen Rider to fight the monsters appearing through out the city. Vajra agreed, under the threat that they would pull the plug on his comatose mother if he refused. So, Vajra became Kamen Rider Talons using the Hawk FullBottle, fighting only when the government was interested. But, he used the Transteam Gun and the Raven LostBottle in secret as the vigilante, Void Ryker.

(Spoiler free for the Yakuza amazon series, just vague thoughts! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT WETHER YOU'VE PLAYED YAKUZA BEFORE OR NOT!!)

I didn't want to finish it yet (because that means it's over), but I have now finished the Yakuza show, and BOY did I already love the first episodes, but it was even more peak in the last ones 😭😭😭😭

I was so excited for it, although the fandom showed its annoying side again, but I didn't let that influence my happiness for it, and I just enjoyed it to the fullest 🙏 Of course I had some worries before watching, but it was just really good. Perfect? No, but let's not act like Yakuza 1 is perfect either (I'm saying this as someone who had Yakuzer brainrot for many years now and is never escaping it), and the fandom now all of a sudden wants to act like Yakuza 1 is the greatest masterpiece ever and how everything that changes it is BAD

Anyywayy...

Definitely really loved the focus being more on the Sunflower kids and how they grew up and eventually got tangled into the Yakuza business! It made one scene in particular WAAY more emotional and sad than in the games 🥺

And wow. They really bamboozled us with hiding a certain character from us, huh...

Loved how many actors I recognised :'D Some were definitely a surprise, because we didn't know much of the cast beforehand!

I remember when they first showed a photo of Indy, and I thought, huh. He kinda looks like Namioka Kazuki (Sid's actor from Kamen Rider Gaim). But I might imagine things because I've been watching some dramas with him in it (I absolutely love his roles they're so embarrassing but funny but also kinda adorable (like Sid for example 😭)). BUT THEN HE APPEARED AND IT TOTALLY WAS HIM . AND HE WAS WEARING A COWBOY HAT HELLO???

Another thing I enjoyed was the mystery around the demons! Something completely new that leaves you speculating from the start. I was guessing who they might be other than that they're working with a certain character, for the longest time I thought maybe they could be the Jingweon, because of the masks. Of course not saying anything to that, but yeah. I cannot really tell how much I liked the resolution to that, since uh. I have questions left ldjdkf

The finale was just great too, and this one scene that looked a lot like the Yakuza 7 finale...

And so so many beautiful and aesthetic scenes with Nishiki 🥲 He's truly the goat in every version... And a poor little meow meow 😭

At first, I was unsure if I could take him seriously because I knew his actor from the drama Super Salaryman and . Well. Let's just say he's unbearable (in a funny way).. But his actor really did SUCH a perfect job in portraying him, and sometimes his voice reminded me so much of game Nishiki 🥺

Speaking of Nishiki, a Yakuza stageplay Nishiki and Amazon series Kiryu collab would be funny. It would be like a Kamen Rider Gaim X Kamen Rider Drive collab, but Yakuza 💀 Kamen Rider and Yakuzer are always weirdly connected...

Oh!! And another thing, the soundtrack fr sounded like straight out of the games sometimes, it was really cool! And the music during the finale was so hype it probably could be a cool final boss theme in the games :) Or at least a final long battle theme!

Majima was fun too, although I feel like if you know absolutely nothing about Yakuza and Majima, you'd be a bit confused about him. He really feels like you have to know him to be excited about him, if that makes sense?

But then, on the other hand, there's a big "plot twist" at the end of the show, and it almost even feels like a dramatic cliffhanger. But it's something everyone who played the game knew, and I kinda assumed it a bit to be canon to the show too. So yeah, I feel like this is a bit of a problem with this show: It can't decide whether it is purely for fans of the games, or newcomers. Or maybe they just added a mix of game canon and new canon to make it more exiting for both sides? I always try to see criticism I give in another light, aka "why did they do it this way?", so I'm a bit conflicted in certain choices!

Favorite front mission game? I think I owned FM4 and that might be the only one I've played. I trusted your opinion on SRW and you were right then, round 2.

Front Mission 3! FM3 has two full-on no jokes no punches pulled routes, around 50 mostly distinct missions each route from the other, and hilariously and yet refreshingly so, the decision that locks you into whichever route is whether you go to the bar for drinks with your best friend that night or not, which might sound silly at face value, but it really drives home the meaning of a "chance encounter" and just how much weight it's supposed to have.

The gameplay is fun, just takes a little bit to get used to the systems of Front Mission (limb damage, for instance) but once it clicks (and it's not too hard), it's a really nice tactical game, with the rare modern world at war adventure plot, kind of like VOTOMS; there's a war raging on in the world, but that's not really your problem, you have a very specific mission (find and rescue your kidnapped sister with the help of a mysterious woman in one route; stay on the run with your sister so they don't kidnap her in the other, where she is a playable pilot), and your involvement in any part of the war tends to be entirely out of necessity.

I love that the boss fights of one route are the playable characters and friendly NPCs of the other route, and vice versa, meaning that those absolute monsters you fought on one route are now on your side and you get to know them better in the other route, a concept that I always love to explore: Canonical What Ifs.

Being a game from 1999 set in the then-future, it's also got a really interesting Internet mechanic, which is very interesting to see in an era where the internet as a household item was not at all a thing just yet, as much as it was this nebulous technology thing that just Existed.

I like the characters and plot. The only two characters that you 100% have no matter the route are your main character, Takemura Kazuki, and your best bro, Kuzama Ryogo, who looks like Shinji Kido from Kamen Rider Ryuki:

Otherwise, each route is VERY distinct from the other. With Front Mission 3, you basically have two whole games. But yeah, it's my favorite FM.

Since it's Valentine's Day, I'm going to share my main ships for different Kamen Rider Series. Going from newest to oldest.

1. Ace x Neon! Even though there has been a drought of content for them lately and the thing with Neon trying to frame Ace, they are still the only ship I have for this series.

2. Sakura x Hana! I know their relationship is considered sisterly and there's no chance of them being canon but I loved the heck out of their interactions.

3. Rintaro x Mei! Ngl they are the main reason why I continued to watch Saber.

4. Aruto x Izu! I swear if we don't get Aruto making Izu genuinely laugh at some point, I'm going to be even more depressed than I already am!

Didn't have any ships for Zi-O so...

5. The BEST MATCH, Sento x Banjo! The closet to canon gay ship in Kamen Rider History! One of my favorite scenes was when Sento was weirdly jealous of Another Build hugging Banjo in Zi-O

6. Emu x Kiriya! How could I not ship them with the number of times Emu has ridden Kiriya on screen? (If you get the joke, you get the joke)

I couldn't get invested enough in Ghost to remember the main cast names let alone come up with a ship so.....

7. Chase x Kiriko! I know Kiriko is canonically married to Shinnosuke with a kid but this will always be my main ship for Drive!

8. Kouta x Mai! I know they have each other’s company in a paradise of their own making but how are they not bored out of their minds on that planet?

9. Haruto x Koyomi! Let’s be real, they were basically married the whole series.

10. I'm ending this with my very first Kamen Rider Ship, Ryusei x Tomoko!

   With a little bit of discussion, they all agreed: it was more practical and more pragmatic to show off their relationship as it truly was than to keep it secret. If they wanted peace and privacy, then there couldn’t be any room for speculation and besides. It was quite exciting getting a glimpse of inside Ace’s head and how he came up with his schemes.

   However, that did come with the shake-up that since Ace’s pawns partners knew what was going on, they had the ability to derail it but he trusted that none of them would put a foot wrong. Neon, especially, used to walking in high heels and bless them but Keiwa and Michinaga did clean up very nicely. Even if it did seem wrong somehow to see them in tuxedos.

   The where, when, and how of the scheme was too easy. Ace was still appearing in movies playing his usual, handsome self more so than an actual fictional character. The others, meanwhile, were finding it a bit hard to find jobs given the clamour around them. For better or for worse, if they were used to it or not.

   There was a small hope in Ace’s heart that this would be a hard reset. Not so hard like the remodellings of the world after the events of a successful Desire Grand Prix royale but akin. There’d be a fresh start with the records set straight and it would all be as easy as getting out of a limousine. One by one, slowly easing the wider public into knowing how much they wanted them to know.

   And so, another movie premier night with beautiful dresses and handsome tuxedos, with more stars on the ground than in the sky came around on the calendar. The sky was black above the red carpet and to every side, the silver flash of a camera going off as some people did their jobs and others got to be fans.

  At the height of the red carpet, after a drive from Ace’s apartment to the movie theatre, the limousine pulled up and it was go-time. No reruns this time.

   Ace, of course, exited the limousine first. He smiled for the cameras, was utterly unfazed as the paparazzi and the news reporters dazzled him. The red carpet underfoot rolled on for what seemed like forever up unto the premier theatre’s doors.

   After this moment of repose, so all the good angles could be shot, Ace turned around and he offered his hand to Neon.

   It made sense that Neon would be the first to exit the limousine after Ace. Either Keiwa or Michinaga next would have been too shocking. Especially since the public consciousness, whilst having a lot of conflicting memories due to all the remodellings the world had gone, to did and did not recall Ace and Neon becoming friendly with one another as celebrity spheres colliding. So there was a little bit of shipping going on, a few ears pricked up and eyes were certainly going wide as Ace unveiled Neon.

   She was wearing a darling, yellow cocktail dress paired with white kitten heels because she couldn’t resist a cat motif. She was giggly and smiley and giddy for the cameras. It was good to see her adored by the general public. The modern day human was not quite so ready for the designer humans of the future but with Keiwa’s wish granted and the GPG gone bust, they had become the norm. Thus allowing Neon to return to her rightful place as Japan’s sweetheart streamer.

   Ace leaned in and Neon looked up at him with her big brown eyes, fluttering her eyelashes. She smiled and so did Ace as he pecked the middle of her forehead. She blushed just slightly, though there was a semblance to a cringe as all the crowd went wild.

   Neon lavished in praise but it was really only genuine praise or affection that she so craved. Regardless, she was quite pampered to be Ace’s one and only girlfriend. However, she was not his one and only partner, more than happy to share with their other dearest ones. Though her wish was not granted, it had come true. Neon was now a girl with more genuine love than she knew what to do with sometimes and she wanted to give the world just a small peek at that. She waited, shifting her weight from one foot to the other before Ace gave her a signal for her to stand down.

   As the fanfare faded, it was expected that Ace and Neon would walk up the red carpet together and that their valet would mosey on so the next celebrity - or celebrity couple - could arrive but not quite. Ace nodded ever so slightly and that movement caught Neon’s eyes and so, she politely stood aside. All whilst holding nervously onto her clutch as Ace moved around her so he could approach the limousine for a second time.

   Ace put out his hand and the paparazzi was momentarily confused when another hand popped out to clasp firmly onto Ace’s. Keiwa’s hand was shaking in a lead inside of Ace’s but Ace was steady. Strong. And pulled Keiwa onto his feet.

   Though that was all but immediately clumsy. He stumbled onto the red carpet - thank goodness he wasn’t wearing kitten heels or that would have been a face-plant for sure - and gawked at the cameras gawking for him. He was the hero of the world. The saviour who had brought world peace and the dead back to life and all the memories that came with it.

   But he was still a boy from a soba shop. This whole world of fame and stardom was very much not his speed.

   “Your tie is crooked.” Ace pointed out, his voice a whisper. “Here, I’ll fix it.”

   “Th-Thank you.” Keiwa croaked.

   Ace smiled his trademark fox smile. It was sweet, it was enigmatic, and he was very nimble as he straightened Keiwa’s forest green tie. 

   “There you go.” Ace said and for additional effect, brushed imaginary fluff and dust off the shoulders of Keiwa’s suit. Even though it was tailor made for him, tailor made was not made for Keiwa.  He still looked good in it, if Ace did say so himself.

   “Appreciated.” Keiwa replied, a rose in either cheek and just to make sure Keiwa knew how cute he looked with a bit of colour, Ace pressed a kiss on either side of his face.

   “Aah, stop it, you only kissed Neon’s forehead.” Keiwa complained.

   “I need it to be crystal clear.” Ace whispered as he leaned out and began to take stock of the reactions.

   Where Keiwa saw perhaps too much in too big an image, Ace saw all the nuance and micro-expressions. The tiny things that added up much more importantly.

   “Aww, I want to kiss Keiwa too. He has no skincare routine yet his face is baby soft.” Neon complained.

   “Do as you please.” Ace said.

   “Yay.” Neon chirped.

   “Don’t I get a say?” Keiwa piped up.

   “Nope.” Neon teased as she tacked herself onto his side, trying to pull him down for a kiss.

   The playful antics perfect for the press and the ensuing photographs, Ace was sure. He might even have to buy any particularly flattering ones for himself, that sounded both endearing and amusing, he decided. In the meantime, he continued to scan the photographers and he was coming to a conclusion that he wasn’t fully expecting.

   They were perfectly alright with it. Sure, not the perfect, model couple they were expecting but the star of the star of the star, the hero who granted the world its world peace, and the fabricated girl who streamed her daily life seemed a good match, right?

   And that was it, right? No more surprises from the world’s favourite Kamen Riders, right? 

   That seemed to be the press was asking amongst themselves but there was a sense of hesitancy. As though they knew these sorts of things didn’t come in threes. An intuition made good on when, after this moment of lovers bantering,  Keiwa then took a step back and more properly joined Neon to the side. Neon was quite cuddly and bubbly with Keiwa who didn’t mind one bit. Her relaxed nature helped calm his own red carpet nerves as he smiled and turned his head expectantly. All for Ace to quietly to beckon forth the… fourth person in the limousine.

   Michinaga glared from inside the plush interior of the limousine. He’d been sitting on the far side and had a half-melted bucket of ice and champagne at his feet. Ace prompted him with one last unfurling of his elegant hand to offer but Michinaga didn’t take it.

   It would have been nice if Michinaga had played along with this little increment of Ace’s plan but no matter. That was, if anything, to be expected of the bull.

   He emerged from inside the limousine and the crowd went silent. Keiwa, hero of the world and all-round nice-natured boy, was a very tough act for Michinaga to follow. Ace was stony-faced as he observed their surroundings. 

   Meanwhile, Michinaga was once again giving his best bad boy impression as he stomped about in his Beroba borrowed Doc Martens because why give up a good thing from a bad place? He stomped up to Neon and Keiwa who were waiting at the wings for him. Neon gave him her best, shiniest smile and Keiwa gave him the thumbs up.

   “Looking good.” Keiwa commented.

   “Thanks.” Michinaga mumbled.

   Neon, meanwhile, like Ace, was attuned to what was going on around them. All of a sudden, there was a shift in atmosphere. She knew that neither she nor the other two had to say a word. Ace said he had the perfect plan to smoothen over Michinaga’s image. They didn’t need to know he was secretly a precious bed hog schnookums behind the scenes. Though he would deny it, covered in all their doona as he may be but they did need to know that he was important to them. Had been before but especially now that peace had been accomplished for all and he was a part of that all. 

   With this sudden breath sucked out of the bodies of the press, Ace took that as his cue whilst his partners remained firm. This was always the most delicate aspect of his plan and their private operations.

   Without even needing to check for charisma and journalism, Ace had already picked a camera and reporter to talk at, not to, there was a difference, in advance and smiled for the recording. He had it all figured out, to the last period.

   “You may be surprised to see Buffa - ah, er, Michinaga but he is quite a different man without his horns. It appears the lone buffalo has found his herd. We were always rivals, yes, we were even rivals with both Keiwa and Neon but we were a team. It feels good to have our partnership not only restored but renewed.” Ace said.

   He was very pleased with that statement that he had penned up in advance. He could already imagine a select sentence or two given premier font and space within the celebrity gossip article to follow in this recording crew’s magazine. He smiled and he rejoined his awaiting partners.

   (Though, if he was the star of star of stars, then it was likely thematically appropriate to call them his co-stars, too.)

   Neon, with a grin, positioned herself between Ace and Keiwa, she linked arms with them both and leaned around, flirtatious, to tease Michinaga. Michinaga, grunted, nostrils flared for half a second, but relented. Fine. If he had to hold hands with Ace, so be it.

   Now that was not in Ace’s plan. He was quite fine with showing the arrangement of they, the final four Kamen Riders ever with surviving ID cores, as it were but this was a nice surprise. Michinaga could be capable of them once a blue moon, it seemed, though he likely was not going to be making breakfast in bed for any of them any time soon but still.

   As a quartet, they all took a step down the red carpet and their valet drove off. The cavalcade of silver, flashing lights looked like stars in the darkness as they were the centre of it. Of the world, of the attention. It felt good. There was a weight off, almost, especially with it done on their own terms.

   And then, all four of them walked down the aisle.

   Well, the red carpet but the aisle could very well be next for them, or so Ace would like to plan ahead.

Ohma Timeline HCs

Sougo first became Kamen Rider Zi-O because of Swartz, because of the same reasons as canon, he wanted to be powerful than his sister and become king of his realm.

His uncle was attacked by an Another Rider, Another Rider Build.

He came upon a blank Ridewatch and "dreamt" of being the hero to save his uncle, which is how he became Kamen Rider Zi-O.

Thinking that obtaining the powers of the previous Kamen Riders to save the world and his uncle, he sought them out.

Thing is, he didn't ask for them.

Sougo came upon all the Kamen Riders and immediately stole their powers, by way of holding up a blank Riderwatch in front of the Kamen Riders.

The first of the Kamen Rider powers that were stolen was Ghost's, which was immediately followed by Specter's.

It had the fortunate side-effect of giving Takeru his body back, uninjured, alive, but it left him in a coma.

Makoto's side effect was different, he fell unconscious and when he woke up, it left him amnesiac.

The memory loss also rewrote everyone's memories, that they don't remember a Kamen Rider Ghost or Specter, or anything that relates to Kamen Riders.

The side-effect that Makoto experienced, are the same for the others.

Next of the Kamen Riders' power Sougo stole was, Faiz, Ex-Aid then, Drive, Wizard, and then OOO.

Despite getting to the Riders first, Another Riders continue to attack.

but Sougo defeats them with ease.

Next of the Rider powers he got were Agito, Hibiki, Kabuto and Kiva.

When Sougo met Kamen Rider Fourze, it was after Gentaro had destroyed his Driver...

This left Sougo shaking his head... unable to comprehend why would someone willingly give away their powers.

The reason he's been stealing the Rider Powers was because he thought no one would want to part with their powers.

Gentarou reassures Sougo that if he had told everyone why he needed everyone's powers, they would given it to him willingly.

However, Sougo doesn't believe that.

At this point, Sougo's uncle was attacked more than anyone else ever was, which makes Sougo even more desperate to claim the other Rider powers, but he laments the fact that he cannot get a hold of Fourze's powers now.

That was when one Kadoya Tsukasa visited, he tried to steal Decade's power for himself, but one other Rider stole the blank ride watch from his hand, DiEnd.

"Let's see how well you use my power"

Kadoya gives Sougo his special Decade Ridewatch.

But enemies became more powerful, especially with Hiryu Kakogawa.

Kadoya's actions gave Sougo the realization, that maybe, just maybe, he can ask for other's Rider powers.

And he'd be right, he asked for W's and Accel's powers.

He apologized for stealing Build's, Drive's and Ex-Aid's powers before asking for the Rider powers of Mach, Brave, Snipe, CrossZ and more.

Then tragedy struck.

Hiryu kills Sougo's uncle.

which prompted Sougo to use Decade's powers to travel through time, and that was also when he discovered his ability to stop time.

Kadoya tried to stop Sougo, Sougo stopped time and then used Decade's powers to go back in time and steal the Rider powers of Gaim, Baron and everyone else.

He went further back in time to steal the powers of the Riders used Cosmic Energy.

He went further back in time to steal the powers of the Riders that battled the Undead.

He went back further in time to steal the Rider powers of the Mirror World Riders - Despite the contestations of his Mirror World self.

In fact Sougo was able to convince his mirror world self that everything was for his uncle.

This Mirror World self of Sougo, isn't "Dark Sougo" because, this is the Sougo that he decided to bury after his uncle died.

So Zi-O II still formed.

Sougo battled Hiryu across time, but... Sougo is reluctant to kill his uncle's killer.

Sougo once trapped Hiryu inside the Mirror World, justifying to himself that he did not do the killing himself.

Still, Sougo went back further in time, and in Kuuga's cave where he stole the power of Kuuga before it was even discovered.

Then, Zeronus arrives.

Sougo battled Zeronus because Sougo has been destroying timeline after timeline with him stealing the powers of Kamen Riders.

Then the Den-O Riders arrived, forcing Zi-O to battle Momotaros and the other Imagins, Ryotaro and Kotaro also donned their Rider suits.

Many Riders to one.

In the end, Sougo used the Decade Ridewatch, in tandem with the Ex-aid Ridewatch to divide himself in two and defeated everyone from the Den-Liner.

Sougo did not steal the Den-O and Zeronus Rider powers yet, he used the Den-Liner to transport everyone back in his own time before using Decade's powers to go back himself.

It was then that Sougo learned that Hiryu was framed.

It was Swartz who killed his uncle... after killing Hiryu in his face.

Swartz also revealed that he's the one leaving blank Ridewatches for Sougo to find over the course of the year.

Sougo hasn't killed anyone before, not even Hiryu.

This stoked Sougo's deep-seated anger and exploded.

Swartz grinned, with Sougo doing his work for him, he' be able to surpass his sister in terms of power.

Then it was the birth of Ohma.

Sougo did not gain Grand Zi-O he immediately went to Ohma Zi-O and obliterated Swartz.

And that's how the 50 years of Ohma Zi-O started.

Sometime before he reached the 50th year, Sougo wished that he didn't end up being Ohma Zi-O.

He remembered how the Riders forgave him for stealing their powers.

He remembered Gentaro's words.

and that was when opportunity struck, Woz appeared.

and a plan formed within the Demon King of Time's head.

So why did you cast Shadow as Gentaro and Silver as Ryusei? Aren't their personalities kind of inverted from them? (Don't change it though. Shadow actively going out of his way to befriend everyone he meets is the perfect antithesis to his modern canon characterization and it gives me life.)

at first I wanted to cast Sonic as Gentaro but after some thinking I decide to use Shadow instead, like you said is great antithesis to his modern counter part, and plus the whole kamen riders ride motorcycles or something( expect drive and maybe a few more)

I’m a really big fan of Decade. Basic bitch answer but like the whole concept of legacy suits as a core gimmick was Invented, more or less, by Decade. And I adore it

Hibiki1, & Ryusoulger

(Reasons under the cut. I do not hold back, these are my Absolute least favorite shows)

Hibiki

Hibiki. Kamen Rider Hibiki. Hibiki 1 in particular. I hate Hibiki. Hibiki my beloathed

I try so hard to listen to people who like things I hate. I also dislike Drive, but I can see things to like about it. Drive has fun characters, genuinely interesting moments, and an explicit canon romance!

Hibiki has… the worst pacing. Somehow both unendingly slow but moving at a pace so fast I could not speed up the ep and read the text, and that was hard even at regular speed. It took 10 episodes for Hibiki to acknowledge Asumu at ALL. Mochida had an entire jealousy plot line that went nowhere. The Tachibana girls were so nothing and yet still paired off with the Riders, neither of whom had any chemistry until the Todoroki x Hinaka ep in HIBIKI TWO. Asumu’s mom was shit on. It was slow, the characters were bland, and it all felt so misogynistic. If all that aside, it got so damn artsy it was hard to fucking look at, too! Not to mention the monsters were equally nothing. There were NO STAKES.

I even rewatched it, to see if it got better. It did not. It was just as miserable and all I saw was just how misogynistic it was on top of the utter boredom.

Luckily for me, I did like Hibiki2. Kyosuke showed up, called everyone out on being slow and boring and useless, and sure, the ending did not get stuck, but really, Inoue had 18 eps to fix an utter mess. I hate Hibiki so much.

Ryusoulger was slow and uninteresting. I wouldn’t have been exceptionally invested, honestly. I watched it to fulfil an Exchange prompt, and to watch the LuPat crossover. I am not helped by having heavily imprinted on Nada, only for his arc to end horribly. I do not like Ryusoulger.

She knows the years of wanting that ark feels, and is about to finally satisfy using her. I cannot stand seeing these two look at each other. It makes me fucking delusional. WHY. WHY DID THEY TURN ARK SOFT. LOVING. WHY IS IT LIKE THAAAAT 😭😭😭. TOEI AIMING FOR MY VITALS WITH THIS ONE. YEAH OK.

Can't forget the star of the show. Or stars rather. Literally TWO MFS. Worlds first canonical nb kamen rider and its because there's literally two mfs 😭. The text is perfect. The voice/voices are perfect. The way they fight is perfect. They are everything to me. They mean everything to me. They have given me what zero-one as a dumpster fire of a show could never give me. And it did the impossible. It made me get hype for somethign thouser related. Truly, the toei satellite above the Hudson valley has it out for me. I've never been so fuckign horny because of a kamen rider suit. It must feel immaculate to become a singularity with your other half. I know ark is feeling things it thought it could never, or never wanted to feel in it's life. I know it can never go back, and if it did go back, it would be fucking miserable. It would regret it, yearn for it every day of its life. Maybe it would even do anything just for a chance to become one again.
