NSR AMA File 1

Who is Mystery Man? He's intended to be open ending because it gives space to work for possible future games. They meant to be a bit cheeky about it. Daim gave the illustrator (ddaddy star @ IG) freedom to do what they want with mystery man.

Does B2J have any extra rooms in the sewers? During concept arting they had several rooms, influenced by XCOM. There was a thinking room and "recreation" room (weed room, but they didn't put it in bc controversy).

Will there be a sequel? Possible, and they're interested provided they have all the things needed like time and money.

Who came up with the story of NSR? Daim and Aidi (the main scenario writer). Daim came up with the main story, three other writers do NPC dialogue, names, item descriptions, etc. The flow of the battle is important, not too serious/jokey. They play a lot of Danganronpa.

What is the cause behind the Border Wars? They want to keep things loose in case they have other ideas in the future, but they did come up with lore for it. (personal note: James Landino also mentioned in his stream that the composers got extra lore for the bosses that didn't get put in the game.)

What are their favorite lines in the game? Daim likes the 1010 fight dialogue (fun fact: Aidi had more freedom to write it). Hazmer likes the Zuke and Eve ending dialogue, which Daim wrote.

Will they sell the artbook separately in the future? They've been discussing it (and merch) with the team. There are lots of factors, even if fans are willing to buy.

What are 1010's names? (Daim thought this would be the first question alongside Mystery Man) Officially, they don't have names. The autographs were not intended to be canon because Daim gave the illustrators too much freedom and didn't think the 1010 signatures would be significant. They didn't think 1010 would be this popular.

Characters that they didn't think would be popular but did (or the other way around)? They didn't think Kliff would be popular but he is. He was not intended to be a flashy villain. Jay Sheldon was a huge part of bringing the character to life. More than a simp, he did what he did because he believed he was right. The story is about 3 main characters: Mayday, Tatiana, and Kliff, who all have selfish reasons to fight. Tatiana doesn't want to fight because she thought she was weak when she was younger. Mayday is selfish because she wants to prove to NSR that their rejection of rock is wrong. Kliff's reason is to show Tatiana that leaving rock is wrong and a betrayal. Mayday is the hero because at the end she's the only one that can put aside her selfishness for the better of the city. They also didn't think Neon J would be popular; they blame the doodle with him and DJSS for the popularity. They didn't think he would go the fatherly direction considering he uses his own children as weapons.

How did you decide on the order of the bosses? They decide on how the bosses are in term of "evilness" and that's why DJSS was the first (Hazmer's idea was jerk Carl Sagan). First two bosses are straightforward and simple, then they slowly slip in hard-hitter bosses. Eve is Zuke's final boss, and Tatiana is Mayday's final boss.

What's the deal with Zuke and toilets? It's an inside joke. Zuke is the type of character who has a strange fascination for avant-garde things.

Does Mayday have any interesting lore? Mayday and Zuke are supposed to represent the two different approaches to music. Zuke is the academic approach, he's very knowledgeable and went to school. Mayday is more self-taught, she replicates what she hears.

How did they come up with boss attacks? They match the boss' music theme and setting theme. Many of the attacks seem similar because they couldn't make too many unique patterns in the game or players will get confused.

1010 figurines? Their intention with the 1010 figurines was for backstory in Vinyl City (what its toy history is like). Some regrets with 1010 lore because it doesn't tell much about 1010 itself.

Official character heights? They struggled with making consistent heights because they need to constantly resize in the game. It's a balancing act of lore and readibility. The ending scene is the closest to accurate heights that the game gets.

Some backstory behind character names? Daim/Aidi like to include bits from their real lives. DJSS came from Daim wanting his name to be ridiculously long and self-indulgent, also inspired by Negasonic Teenage Warhead from Deadpool. Sayu is trying to sound Malay and Japanese at the same time. Eve's name was originally Eva. The design of Eve is based on self-hatred (especially in her first video). As she grows older, she learns to love her skin condition, comfortably showing lots of skin. Unlike other bosses using external themes, Eve's body is her own theme. They did not want the characters to have surnames because they don't want to fall into the trap of Westernized naming.

Evolution of 1010's design from first trailer? They didn't have time for the first trailer but they always knew that they wanted 1010 to look a bit crazy. The design itself is a personal nod to Tron Uprising, which Daim worked for with Polygon Pictures previously.

Some Vinyl City history + writing tips Vinyl City used to have lots of music festivals, people from all over the world come over by boats, the lighthouse is a symbol of the festival, and the plaza used to house a lot of concert halls. Trying to investigate the props in the city gives lore of past music festivals. After NSR took over they rebuilt the basement of the tower, representing an arrogance in outbuilding a monument of the past after conquering it. The secret to good storywriting is control! When you make a twist, the battle is between making it too vague or obvious. Between the two, more obvious is the safer choice. It's okay for the readers/players to guess the twist early.

Why do the characters have weird skin colors? They want to break the barrier between skin color irl. That is why Mayday's orange skin is darker. Racism sucks. But the best explanation is that they just want the game to be more colorful , inspired partly by Steven Universe. Daim and Haz want to be as inclusive as possible, but they're restricted by their own inexperience with marginalized communities.

How old are the characters? DJSS is in his mid-30s. Zuke is 27-28, same as Eve. Mayday is 21. No idea how old Neon J is, they didn't want to answer what year the game takes place in. Definitely older than DJ.

1010 character roles + fight design 1010 roles were based on common k-boy band tropes. White is the leader, Red is the bad boy, Blue is the cool guy, Yellow is the maknae, Green is the eccentric guy. 1010's fight was always intended to be a breather between Yinu and Eve.

Cast Tech morse code? "I WOULD LOVE TO SUCK REAL ICE CREAM, MAKE IT DURIAN FLAVOR PLEASE" sent by DJSS. (It's an inside joke…)

17 and 18 from the Fanfic Writer Asks!

Before I start, the ask box game is linked here in case anyone else wants to ask me something.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

Two learnings! Food and fashion!

A food-related piece of information to start: somehow I ended up reading about kåldolmar (cabbage rolls) and how they are allegedly linked to time in the 18th century when Carl XII was staying in the Ottoman Empire. Apparently (according to what I read at least) they’re a Swedish adaptation of dolmas. Which is kinda cool to learn, especially since I’m someone who likes food from the eastern Mediterranean.

And now, fashion: Because I’m writing something set in 1809, I did end up reading about clothes closures, and the different ways that clothes were closed with pins and drawstrings and the like. I think spicy scenes in fanfic tend to fall back on buttons a lot, whether those fics are historical or contemporary. But strings! Laces! Pins! Imagine the ways they can be used to amplify the spiciness content, whether that’s through humor or through sensory surprises or whatever else. I’m just saying.

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?

Oh gosh. I have a few lines I really like, but I like them so much I want readers to discover them in context. So instead I’m going to grandstandingly share a few passages from Heart and Homeland, one for each of the primary viewpoint characters I write, and say what I like about them.

So anyway, to preview… queer-and-questioning Felice! Poetry-influenced Sara! Unreliable August! Protestant Kristina!

Felice

“My father is not easy to discuss while dancing,” Simon was quiet for a moment, as if letting the air swallow the entire topic of fathers. Then a boyish smile, almost shy, came to his face. “But I heard you and Wilhelm have met before?” Ah, so the smile was for Wilhelm. “Tell me about that.”

“We were six years old,” said Felice. “Mamma has been eyeing us all night. I swear she wants me to marry him now.”

“Would you? Would you consider it a love match if your parents arranged it?”

What a strange question, Felice thought. “I’m not a foreign princess and Sweden needs an alliance. So I couldn’t.”

“I couldn’t marry Wilhelm either,” Simon said.

Although Simon and Felice both laughed at the latter comment, Felice felt Simon’s hand twitch suddenly in her own, as if he were startled. What did that mean? The music in the background did not change key or tempo, as if the orchestra itself was pressuring her not to ask.

So instead Felice only said, “Such a droll remark, Mr. Eriksson.”

It left her heart feeling sad and a little rain-soaked, after she said it. She needed more of their secret language to say Wilhelm has a hold on you and I would like to understand it more, if you judged us friends enough to tell me about him. But she was still only a baby babbling syllables in a tongue where Simon was more fluent, and now the progression of the dance was forcing them apart from one another again. Felice’s feet grew heavy, even as her steps remained perfect.

Okay, something I like about this passage is that Felice and Simon are bonding, which is something canon should give us more of. I like being able to play with the politeness demanded of Felice by society at large, versus what Felice actually wants to say in a conversation, and how she negotiates that.

Felice is also on the verge of discovering her queerness here—something that Simon already understands about himself and has language for—but that Felice doesn’t quite have words for yet. She senses a kinship between herself and Simon, but she doesn’t quite know how to articulate it. In the passages and chapters that follow, Felice discovers more about herself and begins to embrace it. I was very conscious to make platonic friendships an important part of her queer self-acceptance journey. Felice’s choice to elevate friendships to the same level as the romantic relationship she eventually becomes part of… that’s important to me!

Queer friendship hits different and sometimes it makes me sad when queer texts over-emphasize the romantic aspects of being queer while downplaying the platonic stuff. So I decided to write what I wanted to see in the world.

Sara

When Sara and Simon were children, their Pappa told them about the whales he’d seen on his voyages. Pappa narrated grand bedtime stories about the creatures, moving his hands and changing the volume of his voice so that Sara could imagine the suddenness of a splash, the massive arc of a tail breaking through the waves. If you were patient, he said, you could see a whale coming up for air. Sara used to cling to Simon as she listened, half scared and half exhilarated. For Sara to be able to sleep at all, Simon had to remind her that the whales couldn’t get them on land.

Secrets, Sara later came to understand, swam under her skin like whales swam under the water. They moved with just as much magnitude. Sometimes, for a moment, she could forget about a secret and it wouldn’t bother her. Given enough time, however, a secret needed air. It too would force itself to the surface so that Sara could keep breathing.

Sara is probably the POV character I write who is the most influenced by the work I’ve done in poetry. My MFA advisor last fall really worked with me on images, and we spent a lot of time studying image systems in novels-in-verse. I’m pretty sure these two paragraphs were influenced by that study. Like, whales = secrets. Okay, Blue.

Sara’s memories play an important role for me in shaping her motivations and core emotions. I like including lots of glimpses of what her and Simon were like as little kids. I know we’re all hoping to get more Eriksson family backstory in season 3, and I hope for that too, so it’s something I try to include in my writing. As difficult and horrifying as things probably got with Micke at times, I think it’s also important to show moments where he’s taking care of Simon and Sara and being their father. These memories are now sad and bittersweet for Sara because of Micke’s abuse, and they’re also an important part of understanding her and how she views herself.

August

He cast his gaze in another direction, where Sara Eriksson was curtseying to Prince Wilhelm and taking her leave. Thank goodness those two would not be dancing another set together. Now why was His Highness going off on his own again? Didn’t he understand that you could win over influential families by flirting with their daughters? And if Wilhelm was going to be king someday, August thought, he ought to have at least one mistress, for the sake of convention. Though August would never say such a thing to his cousin the queen, he could not understand why Wilhelm so insisted on cultivating a chaste appearance. It made no sense, given his position.

Anyhow! If everyone wanted to dismantle the social hierarchy this evening, why couldn’t August ask Sara Eriksson to dance and make Felice feel as slighted as he did? He wouldn’t of course, since Miss Eriksson had started the trouble between him and Felice in the first place, and August wanted to prove he could avoid such trouble. Flexing his fingers, he made his way through the crowd, toward the doors that opened onto the garden terrace. If he was going to let himself pine and rage, he might as well do it in the darkness. The English Lord Byron, with all his poetry of ill repute, could only approve of such a pose.

OH AUGUST. I wrote this passage as an homage to Susanna Clarke, whose descriptions of Lord Byron in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell had me in stitches. Clarke is divinely talented at writing self-important men and their warped perspectives of the world, so I find myself inspired by her a lot when I’m writing from August’s point of view.

August is not a reliable narrator, obviously, and I like playing with how his perceptions of events change with time. Like, no, Sara did not start the trouble between him and Felice; he started it and flirted with Sara. But of course, August is the most wounded ever, you guys. He is so brooding he could just write (bad) poetry about it. In the next few paragraphs (not shared here) August’s thoughts start to drift toward more in the direction of Freudian death drive ideations (maybe with some Freudian sex drive thrown in, I mean why the hell not.) I found it an interesting writing challenge in terms of transitioning over-the-top ridiculousness toward the more more serious stuff that sort of hints at the traumatized core of the character.

I highly encourage that every Young Royals fan (who can do so from a place of emotional safety) try writing from August’s perspective at least once. It is a solid exercise and you will learn a lot from it!

Kristina

As a devout monarch, Kristina knew that the world to come offered far more than the world she’d been placed in charge of. The Lord had brought so many of her dear family members home to heaven—her father, her husband Ludwig, her cousin Karl Johan, one unnamed daughter who only lived three days, and most recently Erik. Especially during the Easter season, Kristina could push through the hollowness of her grief and tell herself that at the end of life, salvation waited for those dear to her. If anything had happened to her Wilhelm last night, however, it would have shaken her faith the way cannonfire might shake the windows of a building.

Wilhelm was Kristina’s miracle; she had thought of him that way since he was very little, fighting through his sick spells. At that age, when he felt well enough, he would sit at her knee in the evenings and listen to her stories of what she’d done as queen during the day. He would often repeat back the details of a particular state visit or conflict between nobles, and would do so in such a way that Kristina felt more equipped to solve the problem at hand. Then at night, Wilhelm would sleep with his arms tucked around a pillow, looking so angelic that Kristina couldn’t help reaching out stroking her son’s silk-soft hair in a way she didn’t when he was awake. No, she did not want Wilhelm among the angels just yet. So she thanked God, and then thanked Him again, and then asked Him to guide Wilhelm as he got closer to taking the throne.

Sigh. Kristina. You do love your son, you are just… so bad at showing it. And in this universe you are so, so very Protestant. I like how I managed to tie all that together here, and give this little flashback into who Kristina has lost and how she thinks back on her life. I often access a core emotion when writing each of my POV characters, and Kristina’s emotion is grief. I also think you can tell Kristina sees the similarities between Wilhelm and herself. Sometimes that means she sees him as an extension of herself, which is I think where the conflicts between them start.

Similarly to August, I highly encourage every Young Royals fan (who can do so from a place of emotional safety) to write from Kristina’s perspective at least once. She’s worth the investment of your writing time!

Anyway I hope that was all a fun behind the scenes…

now, i'm not quite certain if you refer to pre-existent gods or just a fun little list, so i'm mixing and matching and seeing where it goes lol

bobby. he loves pranks and amusing himself in the process, more than he likes making people around him laugh, so he's definitely a trickster.

carl. god of the workers. being a workaholic himself there's no way i'm wasting the opportunity of giving him this title.

chelsea. goddess of organizing. are you spring cleaning? light up a candle to her, she'll help you out when your battery runs out.

elisa. goddess of disguise (no, i'm not implying makeup is a disguise). and i bet she has a really cool background story, like her scream shatters people's faces, that would be so damn cool, (since she yells i'M aN iNfLuEnCeR a couple of times).

gary. god of engineering. the one that protects manual workers all around, the one they pray to if a beam falls and they could be sued. nah, just kidding, but for sure of engineering, he's very resourceful and deals quite well with tools and building things.

hannah. goddess of flowers. is it about the aesthetic we've been establishing for her in the fandom? yes. is it canon? no, but it doesn't have to be, she's the embodiment of cottage core and that's it.

henrik. god of the wilderness. many cultures have their own myth, legend or god that protects the woods, animals and nature in general. to us, fandom clowns, that's him.

hope. goddess of wisdom. she's canonically a teacher's pet and i think her streets smarts make her very wise.

ibrahim. god of sports. golf player, works out every single day (how dare he?) and is in great shape. the in-universe olympic games has his statue in every event.

jakub, not a god, just a minotaur. that barks.

jo. goddess of the clowns. no elaboration needed.

kassam. god of music. did he write and released a song about ducks? yes, yes he did. does it matter? not really, apparently the song slaps so the music gopd title has to go to him.

lottie. goddess of the night. no, i'm not talking about evil, i'm talking about her being the goddess that protects and defends helpless women at night. it's to her our prayers go to.

lucas. god of sex. no, i will not elaborate it at this time.

marisol. goddess of judgement, she weights out your sins and fucking kills you painfully if you were a bad person.

noah. i like your suggestion about books/knowledge, but if i may interject, perhaps noah as the god of indecision would fit with his arc better. whenever you face a hard decision you pray to him, the ULTIMATE indecisive.

Ineffable Fic Rec List

Happy Fanfiction Author Appreciation Day! I’m having a heck of a time trying to focus enough to read, so I thought I’d put together a list of my favorite Good Omens fics (all Aziraphale/Crowley). Please check them out and shower the authors with love!

Rated-G:

You Know My Name by @dotstronaut (WIP) 5.6K words. Role-reversal AU, Forced Amnesia, Animal Aspects. This fic is written by an artist who also draws scenes from it, and I am in love with the whole thing. Tortoise!Aziraphale and Snake!Crowley, starting in the Garden of Eden.

Build Our Kingdom by Mackem 9.3K words. Post-canon, Picnic, First Kiss, Fluff, So Much Fluff. They go on a picnic together, and it’s just 100% adorable fluff.

An Angel who did not so much Fall In Love as Settle Into It Gradually by TheLadyZephyr 7.5K words. Canon-Compliant, Missing Scenes, Historical References. Aziraphale slowly but surely falling in love. Podfic available!

Stopgap by RC_McLachlan 3.1K words. Missing Scene in Episode 6. Basically just Crowley hating on Gabriel during the “Shut your stupid mouth and die already” scene.

Something to do with these sacred words by Solshine 11.3K words. Pining Out Loud, Declarations of Love, Happy Ending. Crowley confesses early, and Crowley confesses often. Aziraphale takes a Long Time to catch up.

Archangel of Healing by Nnm 9.3K words. Crowley Was Raphael Before He Fell, Post-canon, mild Angst, Recipe for Stew. 😡 Worse role play-related encounter and what advice you would give to others to avoid similar situations?

Oh boy... this happened well over a decade ago but I once started writing an OC-OC RP over IM with this guy I met on a roleplay forum. Seemed pretty normal at first, he was nice and a good writer, but after a few days he started getting very very possessive, and not just over my character but also me.

He demanded my character write his character love letters every single day, and told me I was no longer allowed to write this character with anyone else, or write any RP with anyone else for that matter because both me and my OC now belonged to him, and if I didn't do this there'd be hell to pay.

I told him to fuck off and blocked him and fortunately never heard from him again, but this is the reason why I HATE it when writers expect me and my muses to be exclusive to them. I will never ever be exclusive to one person. If you and your writing buddy enjoy such a things and mutually agree to be exclusive, more power to you... but don't demand it from other people. That's fucked up.

✌ Fondest role-play memory, between muses?

There's so many I'm not sure if I can even pick one example but um... one person I used to write with in 2017, I was new in that particular fandom community on tumblr, hoping to find some people to RP with and I found her page. I instantly fell in love with her muse but I was too much of a chickenshit to reach out to her, especially because she was RPing this muse with someone in a very established RP that had been going on for 10 years already, and while her page said the muse was open to other writers I felt like I would be butting in or something.

I did follow her and she found some of the art I did for my muse and followed me back, and I had a few brief interactions with her in the tags, and this went on for about two months before I finally found the courage to actually send her a private message. Turns out, she too had wanted to reach out to me but was also too shy to do so 😂 We hit it off right away and it was amazing.

I wish I could have that back, I miss her.

♂ Do you have a role-play/writing routine? If so, what is it?

I usually save writing for the evening after dinner. I just turn on some music, doesn't matter what kind, and get to work. This usually works for me.

☿ A trope you dislike?

I'm not really fond of 'The Chosen One/Chosen to save the world' tropes. I don't mind them in video games, but I don't wanna write them myself.

☯ Greatest challenge to writing your character?

Hmmm... I'm not sure. Negan is one of those rare characters that are... I dunno, easier to write than others? Either way, so far I haven't encountered any scenes where I struggle to write him or find it a challenge but who knows... never say never.

✯ A head canon someone else has inspired you to adopt?

I'm sure there was one but I honestly can't remember right now 😂

▼ Are there popular head canons for your character that you disagree with? Why?

I don't know if these count as popular headcanons but I know they're out there: anything having to do with the Carl/Negan and Negan/Lydia ships, like why are those even a thing? Why does that even exist? Big Fucking Yikes.

Also, any and all headcanons dealing with Negan being a rapist. Again, Big Fucking Yikes.

ღ What sorts of plots/characters/scenes do you have the most difficulty writing, and why?

I love me some domestic modern AU, but there's usually a lack of action in those so I find it hard to stay invested. There have been exceptions to this though, it's just more difficult for me. Also, science stuff is challenging. I have one muse I love dearly who is part of a semi futuristic setting with sentient robots and stuff, and I can't wait to write him again one day if I ever get the chance to, but all the scientific and mechanical terms are pretty challenging as well. I usually end up winging it 😂 Love it though.

Is Daniel/Simon (PL600) a sexual companion like North or a Traci?

Analyzing the game again, a controversy has sparked because of this picture, so let’s take a look at how much of “canon” (real game canon) might or not be behind it:

Now, we see this PL-500 picture that clearly states that, although “romantic mode” is optional, the PL-500 is intended as a intimate (sexual) partner, and if one thing we’ve notice from the androids in this game is that the first two letters usually determine “the category” (just like RK are military/police, or the YK are children). And there are two major characters on the game that are later versions of this “PL-500”, and that is the PL-600 Daniel and Simon, that although are described as “household/caretakers/companions”, it’s never specified up to what point.., and possibly the fact that they can cook meals and care for your kids is actually the NEW feature, as PLs where originally sexual/romantic companions on previous models.

This is never actually “explicit” but it’s weirdly hinted during the entire game. - So, we mostly see Daniel, a PL-600 android during the chapter “The Hostage” (witch is also the demo of the game) and maybe a bit of him (depending on what you do) at the end on the chapter “Last Chance Connor”, but we can all conclude that Daniel life was at the house of the Phillips.

At first glance everything was good at the Phillips house, and, there’s even this very nice picture of them as soon as you get off the elevator with Connor.

Connor is given very little time to determinate the best approach to rescue the hostage (Emma) from their now deviant android Daniel.

One of the first interesting things I’ve noticed, despite the fact that the Phillips are actually quite rich to be living in such an apartment (during such rough economic times in Detroit, as Kara sees it on the trip at the beginning, on Todd car), is that the mother never, EVER says ANYTHING about her dead husband. Never laments or screams or even mentions it (her husband is right there dead on the living-room, I mean...), Caroline Phillips (little Emma’s mother) is only focus on saving her daughter, and spitefully says “keep that thing away from my daughter” referring Connor, but we all assume her hate is shared to all androids (witch it’s odd, she owns one that even plays with her daughter).

This very vaguely hints the mother of the house has a quarrel with androids (for some reason) from BEFORE the incident at hand, and when you go see Captain Allen, you walk into the main bedroom.

One thing that caught my eye is that, despite having a household android, it’s nighttime and the incident has being occurring -since one hour- before Connor arrival (meaning an hour ago wasn’t the morning either, you see this on the news on the fridge area), AND, for some reason, the bed sheets are all messed up on the parent’s bedroom.

If you (Connor) analyze/re-construct where Daniel got the gun of the father, you see he never touches the bed when he goes for the gun.

I doubt Captain Allen is letting his SWAT team fool around in the bed, so that’s discarded.

The father of the family (the now “late” John Phillips) has being watching TV and using the tablet to order another android... so... why are the sheets on the parent’s bedroom undone?

If the wife was suffering depression or simply “in bed”, she would have seen Daniel go into the room in panic and get/load the gun right in front of her.

This indicates that possibly the mother was either out of the house at the moment of the event, or somewhere else (the bathroom, etc).

If you examine Emma’s room you will see that she was listening to music, as Connor concludes that this is why Emma didn’t heard the shooting, again, the mother must have being out, if not, she would have heart the entire thing... but there is a darker twist as to why Emma might have being with her music full on... Yes, there is a high provability that John Phillips, “dear old dad”, was having sex with Daniel in the bedroom next door, and there is a grater chance that obviously this was “a regular thing”. Therefore a broken relationship with his wife and that “rich people perfect family photo” was just a charade, thus, also, why “mom was out of the house”. - Even if all evidence is circumstantial, it just fits right in too fast and too perfectly to ignore in a game that pays so much attention to details and talks so much about abusive relationships and dysfunctional families.

Connor can reconstruct events but not “audio”, if you examine the late John Phillips body, you will see that Daniel stood up behind him and they actually had “a talk” BEFORE Daniel starts shooting.

By the food that was left overcooking in the kitchen, the bet is that “dad” had it with Daniel at the main bedroom (maybe even realizing at that point that having sex with the same android was “getting boring”, thus, since they obviously have the money, start considering buying another “sex android toy”).

Then Daniel went to do dinner, oversaw the same men that just had sex with him ordering another “replacement” android, got pissed off like a lover would (this is very common actually, a couple or sexual/romantic partner shooting the other if they know that they’ll being left for “someone else”), run to the bedroom, takes the gun, confronts John (his lover) verbally, Daniel finally snaps, shots him to death, and then runs (like a mother would), to get Emma.

Possibly THAT was the moment where Caroline Phillips returned to the apartment and Daniel saw/heard the elevator blocked, so he head outside.

Now, another interesting thing is that Daniel has a very close relationship with Emma (the little girl), almost “motherly like”, up to the point in witch after shooting the dad, the first thing he can think of is taking Emma (much like Kara when shooting Todd and gets Alice).

Sure, then in desperation and confusion, is shoot by the first cop that arrives and everything escalates “pretty quickly”, but any mother would tell you that after a traumatic event, the first thing you get with you is your kids.

This talks a lot about how Daniel at least “felt” he was indeed one of Emma’s parents, he has a mother instinct until Emma starts to reject him due to the situation and he realized that the girl doesn’t see him the way “he sees her”, feeling all the more betrayed.

* On a side note:

If you see where Daniel and Emma video (tablet, Emma’s room) was taken, you will see the background well enough to realize it’s the same park that Markus cross every time he goes to get paintings for Carl Manfred. - As we established before, Markus is a “patient zero” regarding deviancy.

Markus has the “virus” of deviancy (possibly implanted by Kamski itself before giving him as a “gift” to Carl Manfred), and unaware of it, spreads it to any android near him (remember the “androids are constantly shearing information, and during Freedom March, when Markus becomes aware of his ability, he can turn deviants from almost a couple blocks away from his location).

Then, if the infected android gets into a traumatic or emotional event, the “symptoms” of deviation occur. - Thus, there is a high chance that Markus infected Daniel with deviancy without even noticing when crossing the park one day, and the detonating stressful emotional trauma was later on when Daniel saw, what he obviously considered “his family” replacing him.

Simon, being also a PL-600, has also relevant behaviors to that matter, especially regarding Markus.

For instance, it’s only him and North the only ones who can “give Markus their heart” (source of power, AKA “battery”) if Markus gets wounded during the violent final protest. - This is interesting because while North might or not have an “intimate relationship” with Markus at that point, and Simon validates his point by “if you (Markus) die, our cause dies with you” kind of thing, he does seems a lot emotionally involved, and, plus... Why isn’t there a scene where, let’s say, equally important character like Josh, offers to sacrifice himself too for the good of the cause??? (let’s say you never develop a relationship with North, you let Simon die at some point, and, North being an egocentric psycho-maniac that only wants to “kill and burn”, I guess Josh would have had more chances to give his life for “the cause”).

* By the way, North has NO excuse, I’ve already explained this before, she killed (strangled) the human that “rent her” (so her immediate abuser is already dead), but also she wants to kill all other humans as well, AND!, she is quickly to say “let’s kill androids too”, so... other androids are North “victims” too, either it’s because she wants to fight and they’re being slaughter, or because “Shoot Simon!” (when, there where a lot other options).

By the way, this scene where Simon gets shot at the roof is one that makes you wonder, developers (as it’s obvious in the EdenClub chapter and Hank later reflections over it, as if it was a future where all sexuality is embraced as normal), have no issue regarding the sexual orientation of any character (if per-se’ androids are genderless and only assigned a gender to look like humans making interactions more comfortable). - If you take the gun and follow North “orders” to shoot Simon on the roof, you’ll be given a second chance to reconsider things, as Simon reminds you that “there is always another way”, but it’s up to you (Markus). - If you decide to put the gun down (disappointing North lust for blood of any color), next time this two characters meet, they hug each other very warmly, ...witch isn’t odd given that Markus thought that Simon was death and left behind... but still, quite an emotional response, because this isn’t Kara and Alice “hugging all the time”.

Add to this, during the Freedom March, Simon, being basically “the coward” throughout the whole game and avoiding conflict, if Markus gets shot (and you don’t have any other androids that came with you from the where house of Cyberlife), jumps into the fight like crazy and even dies for Markus at that point. - This goes basically against every fiber of Simon good judgment and behavior traits from the star, he is always scared and passive, even pessimistic regarding the android revolution although it supports it.

Conclusions:

Overall there aren’t hard evidence, there isn’t a “fools-proof” signature telling you any of this things, but when too many circumstantial evidence piles up, you also have a case...

The entirety of the situation with Daniel might be interpreted differently, if you stretch things up, to a more “innocent like” explanation (that I personally don’t see how could fit at this point). And trust me, this blog is for analyzing the main canon of the official game, if there was any other feeling or evidence, I would point it out... but some things are beyond any explaining, like why the bed is all messed up at night if you have a domestic android just to take care of stuff like that (even Kara makes Todd’s bed).

So, for me, the first chapter (or “demo”) sums up the end of an abusive relationship on a love triangle that torn apart a marriage and a family (like even Magazines during the game indicate, that because of “sex androids” couples where getting divorced).

But tell me what you think or if you have found any other evidence that points out otherwise!

Sonic Movie Thoughts (contains spoilers)

I got to see the Sonic movie today! Need to get some thoughts off my chest. Beware, dudes, got some mega spoilers below the cut!

Oh wow! They included Sonic Mania music! I also heard like one or two versions of Green Hills zone through out the movie too but when it came to in-game music, I think that was it.

The Knuckles tribe was a bunch of dicks before now they're really a bunch of dicks.

Longclaw! ;w;

Ho Nelly! They actually included "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen! I've seen people mentioning they should have used this in the original trailer instead of Gangster's Paradise. Seems Paramount was listening to us a little more than we thought.

Hahahaha! They actually included Sanic in it!

The bar brawl scene was hilarious and Sonic got his chili dogs!

Tom tucking Sonic in at the hotel. So cute.

Sonic, how did your feet reach the pedals??? Also, did the robot chase scene remind anyone of this scene?

The fact Sonic doesn't get his red shoes until almost near the end of the movie. Speaking of which, almost all those mid movie scenes in the trailer, nope, edited to include the red shoes.

Robotnik and his EGG SAC! I was surprised by how many times Robotnik said 'hell' and the son of a b- joke but Robotnik mentioning his egg sac made a few of us adults chuckle and wide eyed.

The 9 million steps joke was cut.

Sonic, how many times you getting knocked out in this movie?

Wait, 0:02 - 0:05 in the trailer wasn't actually included in the movie, was it??

Sonic is canonically 15 and Tom's character has to be like in his 30's. I wonder if by the end of the movie he'd be like a father/brother figure to Sonic? *movie ends* Aaawwww, Tom and Maddie practically adopt him! ;w;

Speaking of Maddie, she needed a little more screen time.

All the human characters were fairly likeable, even Crazy Carl and his chainsaw.

Ending credits were awesome! Got some Wreck It Ralph vibes.

Tails! Tails! Tails! They even used the current video game voice actress.

Speed Me Up is pretty catchy.

Sonic's redesign. Oh man, I found him so incredibly adorable through out the entire movie. God, if they had stuck with the original design, I don't think I would have been able to generate the same amount of empathy. The blue arms still bug me, but that's my only gripe for the redesign. The separated eyes don't even bug me.

Robotnik, stop being a jerk to Agent Stone!

I would have like to see Sonic's reaction if he saw an actual earth hedgehog.

So who wants to eat at Olive Garden and drink some Mello Yello? Jokes aside, that product placement probably helped pay for this movie (and last minute redesign).

Final thoughts: Movie was awesome! It's no Marvel leveled film and has it's flaws, if you want a cute feel good movie, this is the one to see. Plot was mostly Sonic trying to make a friend while trying to run away from a mad scientist and it was pretty predictable at times. Also, the movie is only 99 minutes long so at times it feels a bit rushed but hopefully if a sequel is green lit, next movie will be a little longer and better paced. Jim Carrey did a pretty good job of portraying the Eggman/Robotnik (I'm happy they mentioned both names) and at times, I could have sworn I heard reminiscence of his Adventure of Sonic the Hedgehog theme. Was I the only one? Also, I enjoyed James Mardsen's character a lot more than I thought I would.

What was up with the lightening emitting off of Sonic's body? When in the game did he ever have electrical powers aside from the lightening shield? Is it supposed to represent his insta shield?

i wanna talk about my walking dead oc that im coming up with soooo here

okay so like

the idea of ‘sound’ in the walking dead franchise attracts walkers and is seen as a danger or a tool to use against them. as far as i have been watching it (season 9 ep 6 ish now) i havent seen any ‘travelling bands’ that use sound or music to ‘control’ and herd walkers away or even distract.

so like.... i came up with an idea for a twd oc where she (im leaning to she) uses music to her advantage to herd walkers n stuff away??? maybe she doesnt have a lot of combat skills (if not at all) and doesnt take down walkers as much or even people, so maybe she’s gentle, caring.

is this an excuse to draw oc x canon? yeah (daryl im so sorry you’re gonna have to put up with this fucking idiot)

am i loving it? yeah

i was maybe thinking that she stumbles across the group multiple times throughout the show’s story. once at the quarry, once at the farm, once at the prison and maybe joins them after the prison? along that time? (bc i like the terminus episodes dont @ me). she could have been ‘claimed’ by the claimers, trapped and then the group comes and is like “yo we got you”

i also had an idea of her being from alexandria, but she wanders every now and then, which would maybe not make the quarry or farm meet ups but the prison as a first encounter instead. which im also leaning towards but i definitely do want this character to interact with the claimers and terminus.

maybe she could of also stayed in the prison for a bit and left when all the big bad governor stuff happened (when it got really bad maybe?) bc she’s not a confrontational type. mf just be playing guitar and wandering the country side looking for decks of cards.

which gets me to before the zom apoc. what did she do? maybe a shitty highschool graduate who worked a shit job and parents weren’t really around most of the time? just the type to be stuck in a pit they cant escape from but the Apocalypse gives them purpose?

like, she becomes a traveller, a nomad but she’s happy for the first time. because she’s playing music which maybe it’s what always gave her a sense of belonging. she would sit around campfires and tell stories and sing songs, and maybe sometimes save her own life with song.

WHICH OKAY I HAVE A SET IDEA I WANT TO DO

she gets bit because she doesn’t fight back

separated from the group, she remembers how they saved a life by cutting off the leg of a man to stop the infection. it works, she doesn’t turn but she can’t go far. so she almost dies alone

Thank you for the request! I don’t do a lot of self-insert fics but I am all for a challenge! Just a warning though, since this isn’t my usual writing style it may be a little rough in places. I also agree that we need more Emilio and want to write some fics for him in the future about his thoughts on things or something of the like. Anway, to the fic!

Timeline: Pre-canon aka Emilio is a player with nothing but time on his hands.

Summary: You go to a club to see Natural Disasters with friends and somehow catch Emilio’s eye—but you’re not interested in his game.

Title: Just a Little Fun

You wait on the steps of your place for the Uber to show up. Your friend, Veronica, had convinced your friend group to go see this up and coming band. Apparently, the lead singer was really attractive. Or something.

You sigh and check your phone again, but in the time it took you to do that, the Uber had pulled up and Veronica was hanging outside the window.

“Y/N! Get in, girl!”

You shove your phone into your small purse, giving a sheepish smile to the Uber driver who rolls his eyes at your friend as she drags you into the car.

“Started without us, V?” You say, as you smell the alcohol on her breath and shut the door behind you. On the other side of Veronica, your friend Jordan gives a nod.

“Pshh.” Veronica dismisses your comment before directing the driver where-to next.

“Its for the nerves!” Jordan teases, and when you raise an eyebrow she clarifies: “She’s hoping to get with the lead singer.”

You scoff. “Didn’t he hook up with your old college roommate a couple weeks ago?”

“Yeah, she’s the one who told her about the band.” Jordan replies before Veronica can answer.

You give Veronica a look.

“So what? She said he was a good bang and I need one of those as a rebound from Carl.”

You shake your head and sigh, looking out the window. Veronica is now on her soap-box about her ex again.

A fifteen-minute car ride later and you show up at the small club the band is performing at. The three of you pile out of the car and Veronica pays the Uber driver, including a cash tip with a wink.

“Hannah told me we can get an exclusive with the band.” Veronica says excitedly in your ear as you grab a standing table once inside. “I just have to find the right person to talk to.”

You nod, trying not to show your disinterest to your friend. But it doesn’t matter, she’s already whisked off somewhere.

“Want a drink?” Jordan asks, nodding to the bar.

You shake your head. “I’m good, thanks.”

Jordan shrugs and heads off, leaving you alone. You look around at the artwork on the walls for a couple minutes before getting bored. When you look back at the bar you notice a handsome man sitting near Jordan. He laughs at something his companion is saying and you think how beautiful his smile is. Trying not to stare too obviously, you alternate between looking at him and looking around for Veronica. Then, when you look back again for the umpteenth time, he’s looking right at you.

You sit up straight, cheeks flushing as you’ve been spotted, pulling out your phone casually to hide your face. Jordan comes over then, a drink in hand. You use her as an excuse to look over again and notice he’s still watching you with a smirk.

“Why so red?” Jordan asks.

“What?” You say, startled.

“Why so red?” Jordan repeats, sipping from her drink.

“Nothing.”

“Mhm.”

You look back at him again. He waves a little. Directing your attention back to Jordan, you realize she’s waiting impatiently for an answer.

“Did you not see that guy sitting next to you?” You relent, trying to use Jordan to block out the man from your vision.

“Which one?” Jordan glances over her shoulder.

You try and discreetly point him out.

“Him?” Jordan points, halfway turning around so it can’t be mistaken what she’s doing.

“Jordan!” You exclaim, grabbing her hand and forcing her to face you again. “Don’t be so obvious.”

“I mean, he’s pretty cute. For a dude.” Jordan laughs at your embarrassment good-heartedly. “He seems to be paying a lot of attention to you.”

“No, I don’t think so.” But you flush as you say it.

“Uh-huh.”

When you look back over to the bar he’s gone.

Veronica comes back and reports she didn’t have any success. You and Jordan comfort her and order a round for the table. An hour goes by and you’ve forgotten about the guy as you talk with your friends. Then, the MC announces the band: the Natural Disasters. Veronica practically screeches in excitement.

“Holy hell he’s hot.”

Jordan rolls her eyes and you smile, following Veronica’s eyes to the stage. That’s when you see him. Center stage, a small smile on his face as he greets the crowd, is the guy from the bar.

“I told you he was a babe!” Veronica says when she sees your expression of surprise.

Shit, you think, realizing you had not only zoned-in on the one guy who was probably the biggest player in this club, but also that Veronica would be beyond upset if she knew you kind of wanted him. Well, she doesn’t have to know.

The band plays and you try to pretend that you’re not disappointed with the turn of events. It’s not like it went anywhere anyway, it was just some mutual looks from afar—no big deal. Also, you were done hooking up with guys like him. Right? Yes, of course. Then you realize he’s seen you in the crowd and is kind of staring at you as he’s singing.

He does that all night, almost singing directly at you the entire time. You’re flattered, and maybe a little into it, but it doesn’t change who he is or that your friend already called dibs.

After the show, the three of you are getting ready to leave when a guy approaches and asks if you and your friends would like to meet the band.

“Absolutely!” Veronica replies before you can decline, grabbing Jordan and you both by the arm and following the guy as he leads you to the back.

The room he leads you to isn’t glamorous: its small and is full of old furniture that doesn’t really fit the space. But the band doesn’t seem to care as they crowd around a small table with their drinks. As you and your friends enter, they all stand and greet you. Veronica immediately introduces herself to everyone and you try not to notice that the lead singer keeps looking back at you even as your friend is speaking.

When it’s your turn, you offer your hand to him so as to get it over with faster.

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you.” You say politely, shaking his hand for the briefest of moments.

“Officially, that is. I couldn’t help but notice you staring at me earlier.” He says bluntly, but with a flirtatious smile. You flush again and he laughs a little. “I thought I should properly introduce myself. I’m Emilio.”

“Y/N.” You reply.

“Thanks for coming, Y/N. I hope you enjoyed the show.” Emilio says, moving closer to you as someone has to move past him in the small space. His arm brushes up against yours and you feel your heart quicken.

“Yeah, I did. You guys have a really nice sound.” Emilio smiles at your compliment and you glance over at Veronica but don’t catch her eye. Surprisingly, she’s more interested in talking to the drummer now. You hate the little bit of relief that gives you.

“Want to sit?” He offers, gesturing to the sofa. You look at your friends, who don’t seem to be leaving any time soon, and nod. The two of you sit down and you try not to think about the fact that your knees are touching in the close quarters.

“So what do you do, Y/N?” He keeps his eyes on you as he takes a sip of his drink.

You sigh at this, reality slapping you in the face at his inquiry. Emilio lowers his drink with a questioning look.

“Look, I know you’re not really interested in what I say.” You admit, making him raise an eyebrow. “You’re just trying to hook up.”

His eyebrows shoot up in surprise.

“Woah, you’re getting a little ahead of yourself, Y/N. You don’t even know me.”

“Yeah, I don’t, but I do know guys like you.”

“I think that’s a little unfair.”

“Maybe, but I’m not worried about being fair.” You reply.

Emilio scoffs, and to your surprise, he smiles.

“Honesty. I like that.”

Annoyance sparks in you and you ignore how half of it is directed towards yourself because of how you like it when he smiles.

“You do, huh? Well, here’s honesty for you: I didn’t want to come tonight. She convinced me,” you point at Veronica, “because she wants to sleep with you—because that’s what you do.”

“Says who?”

“Says her college roommate that you slept with.”

“Okay, I guess you caught me.” He sits up slightly, leaning in closer to you. “But you have to admit you’re interested.”

“I’m not.”

“Really? Because the way you looked at me earlier tonight suggested otherwise.”

The two of you are close, almost nose to nose. Emilio looks down at your lips and you take in a breath. His hair falls forward as his gaze stays downward, beginning to lean in to close the gap.

“That doesn’t matter.” You insist, putting a hand on his chest and moving him away from you slightly. Your hand rests there a moment too long and you ignore the smirk on his face as you put it back in your lap.

“Okay, if you say so, Y/N. But just so we’re clear, I don’t see anything wrong with having a little bit of fun.”

You roll your eyes and Emilio smirks again, taking a swig of his drink.

You and Emilio then join the larger conversation with the rest of the band and your friends. Time passes as you all have fun talking about your lives.

The band tells stories about when they met, how they started, and previous gigs they’ve had. You enjoy the way Emilio’s eyes sparkle when he talks about his music. Maybe it’s just the buzz you were feeling earlier, but you allow him to sneak an arm around the back of the couch behind you at some point.

Sometimes the two of you break off into private conversations when the opportunity arises. Despite your earlier reservations, you find yourself opening up to him about your life. How things aren’t perfect right now with where you wanted to be and you just needed some time out tonight to not think about it. Emilio listens and relates to you, expressing his own frustrations with affording rent on the sporadically paid basis that comes with being in a band. You can feel your opinion about him change with each new topic you cover.

After a while, the group conversation dies down as it gets later in the night. You and your friends have to head home, and Emilio insists on walking out with you to your ride.

With Jordan and Veronica already in the Uber, you stand just outside the club’s back entrance with Emilio. He grabs your hands and you resist rolling your eyes at the cliche with a smile on your lips.

“I had a great time tonight, Y/N.” Emilio says, the height difference making his hair fall down to his brows again.

“Yeah, me too. It was nice to get out and not worry about things for a while.” You look down at your clasped hands before looking back at him.

You can’t read the expression on Emilio’s face, but you feel like you can see the sparkle in his eyes—the one you know is genuine even in the short time you’ve spent together.

“It doesn’t have to end, you know. We can go back to my place…” But Emilio doesn’t finish, already sensing your answer. He gives you a small smile.

“I did have fun though, Emilio. Maybe it wasn’t the kind you were looking for, but it was enough for me.”

“No, it was enough for me, too.”

You smile at that, a little surprised. But there was that sparkle again.

Silence ensues. Neither of you want the night to end but know it won’t go any further. You look back down at your hands again for a moment before looking back at him.

“Goodbye, Emilio.”

“Goodbye, Y/N.”

Then you do it: you reach up and kiss him. Electricity sparks as you let go of his hands so you can reach up and touch his neck. His response is eager and the kiss deepens as you taste the alcohol on his tongue. Emilio wraps his arms around your waist and you run a hand through his hair before pulling away slightly, staying close so you can savor the moment.

“Maybe another time.” You say in a breath, taking one last look at his eyes before pulling away completely.

You keep your eyes on him as you walk away, enjoying the slightly dazed look on his face. With butterflies in your belly, you get into the car and give one final wave to Emilio. He waves back, giving you a smile as he runs his hand through his hair. The Uber pulls away.

Even if he forgets about you and moves on to the next girl tomorrow night, you don’t really care. It was nice to imagine what it would’ve been like if you had taken him up on his offer—but tonight was perfect just as it was. His was one of the best kisses you had ever had.

My Top 25 Games Advent Day 10 - Detroit: Become Human (#16)

“We are gonna tell them peacefully that we want justice. If there’s any humanity in them, they will listen. And if not, others will take our place and continue this fight. Are you ready to follow me?”

This is a divisive game if ever I’ve seen one. Some cite David Cage’s latest multi-branch epic as a modern masterpiece of cinematic gaming, seamlessly weaving three tales of humanity and equality that is genuinely and sometimes harshly affected by your choices. But others, a fair amount of others, see this title as an overblown, janky mess with David Cage’s typical wonky, heavy-handed writing and themes that don’t even attempt subtlety. Me personally, I can see both sides of the fence. So here’s my take.

Going into Detroit, I honestly wasn’t expecting much, being well aware of the reputation Cage carries from his previous projects, but I’m a big ol fan of decision-based adventure games as anyone who’s been reading this countdown will know, so I thought it’d be a fun distraction. Detroit turned out to be what I consider to be the best decision-based game ever created (there’s one other in this list that places above Detroit, but you’ll see why when I get to it). And that’s purely down to the game mechanics alone, even just putting aside the characters and writing for a moment, the sheer amount of endings and branching pathways is baffling. This is a game that is perfectly in tune with every single choice you make, which can often result in deaths of characters that you can’t undo and then boom, you lose the rest of that character’s storyline. It’s harsh, but it means every player gets a different experience and gives much, much more weight to the decisions you make as you strive to get everybody out at the end. Detroit is genuinely a wild ride, made even more enjoyable by its various crime scene investigations, fight scenes and chase sequences, which all keep the overall gameplay from becoming stale.

Now, I know some people criticise this game as a whole for not digging into AI or telling another Ex Machina story about science and technology and ‘tHe SiNgULaRitY’ or whatever, but that’s because that’s really not what Detroit is trying to do. Detroit tells a story of standing up to prejudice and reminding us that humanity should always strive to do better by those that are oppressed, and using the allegory of androids is excellent in driving this home. Detroit is a story of overcoming prejudice in an increasingly terrifying world, as the city of Detroit itself is home to those hurling insults and violence at androids, while simultaneously becoming reliant on them. It’s an interesting paradox, especially as the game continues to give subtle speculation in the background of various scenes as how technology could affect infamous cities such as Detroit in the future, as well as giving an insight into the potential international climate in 2038, from bees dying out to a potential war over the Arctic between the US and Russia. The speculative world-building in this title is stellar, and it’s something I think a lot of people gloss over when considering this game to entirely lack subtlety.

Moving on the foreground of Detroit, here’s where the majority of the people point to Detroit’s massive ham-handedness. The characters. Detroit places you in the control, and basically places in your care, three entirely different characters with completely different and engaging perspectives on the growing number of ‘deviant’ androids:

Connor, a prototype detective android, begins the game entirely sided with his own oppressors, doing everything he can to ensure his mission is complete. Connor can remain as a cold, ruthless, uncaring machine for the entire game, to the disdain of your reluctant colleague and eventually close friend (boyfriend) Hank. Or, if you’ve made enough choices to make Connor reflect on his life, you are given the choice to later defect and allow Connor to discover his humanity. Here’s what I love about Detroit; going back to the masterful story branch crafting for a moment, the game doesn’t allow you to make throwaway choices that entirely contradict how you’ve been treating a character for the whole game, so Connor’s eventual deviancy can only come about if that’s how you’ve been playing him. What’s even more powerful is that, if you choose to stay on the original path Connor was taking, his eventual obsolescence is all the more heart-breaking, as he realises all too late that he was manipulated and used by his creators to harm those who wished for freedom, only to have himself replaced by a more advanced model after being successful. Now that’s how you do an ending.

The second, Markus, yet another prototype gifted to the artist Carl (played by the legendary Bishop himself, Lance Henrikson) to take care of him in his old age. Markus’ story has a hell of a lot of dimensions to it, as you acknowledge throughout your time with him that, despite the fact he is still a slave, he lives what could be seen as a privileged life, compared to other androids at least, living with the artist that simultaneously owns him and dictates his entire life, whilst also urging him to seek his own humanity and think for himself. Some interesting hypocrisy from Carl, which is another reason why it’s so easy to have mixed thoughts and feelings on certain characters. Characters are morally grey in Detroit, even if it doesn’t seem so on the surface! So there’s some of that nuance people seemed to forget was there (but hey, this is all just my opinion so uhhh don’t @ me telling me I suck). In the end, having fallen from his sheltered life into one now entirely dictated by himself, Markus finally sees for himself the horrible treatment of the rest of his kind and resolves to take action and becomes a symbol for the android rebellion, rounding off a satisfying arc for a character previously completely blind to the suffering of his fellow androids.

And the third, Kara, is a household android that has lost all memory beyond a horrible accident she seemed to have suffered. Unlike the polar opposite stances of Connor and Markus, Kara and her growing bond with her previous owner’s child Alice represent what Markus is fighting for and what Connor is fighting against; finding humanity. Kara doesn’t want a part in war or rebellion, her only desire is to protect the child she’s now caring for. While this perspective was extremely important, not least as a way of seeing firsthand how your large scale choices as Connor and Markus are affecting smaller scale narratives such as Kara and Alice’s bid for freedom, my one and only gripe is wishing they’d made Alice, and to a point Kara, into more developed characters that could stand on their own. While their plight is poignant and effective and their motivations are clear, the same can be said of Connor and Markus, who each have their own nuances and quirks to their character that subtly portray the humanity they’re discovering in themselves. Kara and Alice, with a little more development outside of their main drive, could’ve made that plotline just a little more interesting, but I maintain that their perspective was essential in showcasing the outcomes of your choices. Plus, Luther is an awesome character and I love him more than anything. It all just goes to show that a lot of the subtlety some claim as missing entirely can be found in other aspects of the experience, most notably the world-building and the excellently composed soundtrack. In particular, I think the move of choosing an individual composer for each character was absolute genius, as it gives each one their own unique musical style and atmosphere.

I know a lot of this, especially the characters and their arcs, may seem like cliches and so on the nose it isn’t even trying, but I think in this case, it just works. Stories of breaking away from ingrained prejudice can be just that and sometimes benefit from telling stories as they are, Detroit didn’t need to be stylised or rooted in subtle, shifting plot threads to leave me an absolute emotional wreck by the time I finished playing. Sure, it tackled its heavy themes with as much grace as a blind rhinoceros, but that didn’t detract at all from the emotional value of each individual plot thread and it certainly didn’t hamper the experience of being completely engrossed in a story where your choices matter more than anything else. David Cage may have rightfully earned his reputation as a bit of a fumbling, heavy-handed writer, but this game is so painstakingly crafted from every character to every setpiece and every choice alteration from minute to grandiose, makes that famous Cage jank almost entirely disappear. Almost. And if you yourself are a Cage skeptic as I once was (and to a point, still am), I encourage you to give this game a try.

Standout Moment Award: The crossover finale of all three main narrative threads is absolutely perfectly executed, and feels equally impactful no matter your choices. But, you know, obviously the best canon ending is when everyone gets out alive.

Standout Character Award: Connor. Of course this had to go to Connor, the ever-conflicted, messily efficient twinky android who is definitely dating Hank takes today’s standout character shoutout.

Tomorrow: No. 15; framed swordsman gets pissed off at a world-ending prophecy, bothers entire world for help.

li’s favorite dates: pt. II

some things occured to me during a different post, so why not?

part I

❝ headcanons ❞

lucas. he always goes an extra mile to impress you, so if the occasion calls for it, that extra mile can turn into a dinner on a yacht, dancing closely and ending the night right there, with 'fun’. or a trip and a casino night. if a girl appears on a hot smokin’ dress he’ll drool and pretend he isn’t, but if she shows up on a suit. that’s the true power of boners right there.

henrik. riding bikes to a waterfall and have a meal there, then swimming and diving, having fun in the water. concert and drinks. hiking and climbing somewhere gorgeous where you can end up on top of a hill and not only admire the view together, but also have a meal, play a game and finish the date there.

noah. he likes cooking for you, so home made meals are a plus. he also likes old time fun, so he’ll probably take you to a carnival, and the whole shebang of hitting the target, gettuing the teddy, eating cottoncandy and going on the ferris wheel. he loves being romantic, but i reckon he likes having innocent fun as well

marisol. watching a play or a musical is on her to-do list as a date. something classic and fun, that you can choose and enjoy together.

carl. watching the ‘star trek’ trilogy, on the big screen, followed by dinner and drinks. i mentioned the ‘interactive fair’ before, and now it’s time to talk about a star trek convention. don’t wanna sound too cliché here, but he likes it! seeing what’s new, what’s old. the possibility of seeing the actors of his favorite franchise, no matter which movie/show they worked on. the chance for you to get knoiw something he really loves and him in his element.

kassam. one of the things that contributes here is the fact that you plan a date to impress someone. a launching party of some sort, whether a new album or perfume of a celebrity, is the perfect way for kassam to do that to you. he has access to those all the time. plus the drinks, you starstrukk by the artists circulating the party and be able to just go home and finish the date, after having fun in a celebrity party.

bobby. waterpark. something tells me he would have a lot of fun going from pool to pool, splashing around, having a laugh. plus, he’s terribly clumsy, and when he tries to show off, he will slip and hit the water, stomach or back first. “real smooth, huh?” “yeah, the water shaved your skin like nothing else, bobs.”

gary. anything that involves good food and drinks, music, and a cool place that you can talk. of course the shipyard date you can do that, and i do think it’s his top choice, but his second favorite might be a cool pub, kind of like ‘mclaren’s’. playing darts and pool might be on the list, and if you don’t know how, he’ll teach you if you want, if you do know how, color him impressed and even more into you.
