My second portrait for the #portraitchallenge_2019 is Canadian artist Emily Carr; probably most famous for her totem pole paintings and her powerful trees! I have been lucky enough to visit the West Coast of Canada a few times and stand amongst some of those massive beauties! It was her “oneness” with nature that first attracted me to her work. She practiced “Sei Do” a Japanese concept, “the transfusion into the work, of the felt nature of the thing to be painted." I really admire that concept “the felt nature, it’s essence” and trying to capture that! I kept the colour somber in this one, she always appears so sad in her photos, I chose to portray her in a younger version, just starting out on her artistic journey in life. Watercolour, ink, gouache, coloured pencil, lots of layers! it’s amazing how much the medium changes the “feel” of the piece! (read the earlier post/digital version more info on this guy!) Personally, I prefer this version, more texture, more dynamic!
