1b. Have You Heard? - Dead Letter Society (Ava)
Tumblr media
Toronto, Jan 12, 2024
Well, I finally put an end to my procrastination — I wrote a letter to that Emile, whose address was provided by the Dead Letter Society.
One ought to expect more enthusiasm on my part; after all, he might help with the pressing matter at hand, or even contribute to my primary objective, if I'm lucky.
Nevertheless, having wandered the Earth for so long, I find it difficult to feel hopeful. Though I am associated with the Dead Letter Society, it doesn't mean I automatically trust them.
Above all, I've been preoccupied with the recent events. I now believe that keeping my jewellery store at the Eaton Centre isn't the brightest idea. The seemingly arbitrary transformations of individuals usually happen in close proximity to shops; the transformation is immediately followed by a rampage, as if they're obeying clandestine instructions in search of a specific target.
One of the mutated beings struck me, last week. Fortunately, I managed to run before anyone noticed my lack of blood or the near-immediate healing of my grievous wound.
I'd rather continue my investigation, but remaining in that place poses a threat — if not to me personally, to our shared secret. It might be mere paranoia on my part, but I wonder if this could be an intricate scheme to unveil the existence of vampires. If so, what would the mastermind behind this plot stand to gain from this revelation?
Mr. Finch made an interesting observation, while we were reviewing information about the cases: all those affected had visited Algonquin Park within the past three months. Initially, I dismissed it, thinking it was common for Canadians, especially for residents of Ontario, to visit Algonquin sooner or later.
Also, what about foreigners? If something in Algonquin is triggering sudden mutations, why haven't there been reports of incidents abroad? Unless other countries are keeping them a secret, but that seems somewhat unlikely.
This whole situation doesn't make sense to me.
What's worse, Georgie from the diner has a brother who experienced a mutation. I promised her to do everything in my power to help; except, I don't even know where to start. It's incredibly frustrating.
I don't even know why I, a creature considered monstrous and essentially immortal, concern myself with the existence of other supernatural beings. Do I worry about potential competition? Or is there still a lingering trace of humanity within me, causing my heart to ache for the common people?
Maybe I'm just tired of losing everyone. I've faced a fraction of eternity in solitude already, and it's not an experience I'm eager to repeat.
Signing off,
Ava Bennett

guys did NOT wake up early but i DID dream i was on the Franklin expedition having seen the TV show. except there wasn't actually a ship we were just like. stuck deep in a huge canadian forest. yellowjackets style. but i wasn't in command or anything i was just a lowly sailor. so even if i went to franklin and was like check your tins babe that wouldn't have done a single thing. so all i did was make hints and drop jokes. like omg guys imagine if the cans were sealed poorly and we had no food soon in this forest which is suspiciously empty of wildlife 🤣🤣 omg that would be so funny lmao no but someone should probably check this fr 🤣🤣 also it was a time loop have i mentioned this. like i'd always die during carnival no matter what. idk if i even tried volunteering for guard duty though. maybe i just couldn't resist a party even if i knew i'd get set on fire there. anyway. i'd make slightly different choices every time. and discover fun new things. that if i volunteered for one of the first hunts for tuunbaq (which i always avoided because. of course why would i sign up for that. but i didn't care that much considering getting ripped apart by a bear probably isn't much worse to being set on fire) not only would i escape unscathed, but also someone would scrape some bark of the tree and be like omg guys what if we ate it... and i was like hahaha imagine if that's all we will be eating due to the poisoned cans 🤣🤣 and they were like omg stopppp you're beating this joke into the ground 🤣🤣 but the tree bark, while probably not nutritious, was actually very tasty. AND we made earrings out of it. after a lot of dying and being reborn and making all possible decisions, i realised this was one of only two jewellery making opportunities - the other being making jewellery from dead insects and i was not going to do that lol. ALSO, i kept finding letters from this one real life friend whose letter i haven't responded to in a while in the snow and they'd be mostly dissolved and illegible due to. being buried in the snow. so yeah this is probably a sign

Immigration Lawyer Toronto: What you need to know before Bringing Goods to Canada
You are now ready to move to Canada and start a new life there. You have heard or seen plenty of opportunities and now want to get on that train as well. When coming into Canada, you may bring items from your country without paying duty for them, but they all have to be used items. Immigration lawyer Toronto breaks down the following;
Items you will not have to pay duty for.
• Linens
• Books
• Clothes
• Jewellery
• Furniture
• Silverware
• Antiques
• Musical instruments
• Hobby items and tools
• Personal collections of arts, stamps, or coins
• Appliances such as refrigerators and stoves
• Gifts worth less than 60 CDN per item
You will have to pay duty for items such as;
• Vehicles intended for use in business
• Farm equipment
• Items bought in transit to Canada
• Rented or leased items
• Equipment you plan to use in construction, manufacturing, or contracting
If you have items you are unsure whether you should pay for duty or not, bring the registration documents and sales receipts.
Wedding Gifts
Wedding items can pass duty-free if;
• Your wedding was within three months of your moving to Canada
• Have planned a wedding within three months of moving to Canada
The catch here is that you must own these gifts before moving to Canada. This rule applies to household items you carry as wedding gifts.
Vehicles
According to an immigration lawyer Toronto, vehicles brought in for personal use are duty-free, but there are some limits. The major one is that the vehicle has to meet Canada's pollution control and safety standards.
Immigration lawyer Toronto knows not all things can flow through the Canadian border unopposed. For instance, there are strict rules on firearms. The decisions made depend on whether you are a permanent resident or plan to move to Canada. There are also restrictions on importing endangered plants and animals into the country.

“BUSY HOUR PASSED BY JUDGE LACROIX,” Montreal Gazette. January 9, 1933. Page 5. ---- Twenty Accused Appear Before Him at Session in Arraignment Court ---- TWO YEARS' SENTENCE Strictest Penalty Handed Out for Automobile Theft --- Several Women Take Hysterics ---- For one hour in the Arraignment Court on Saturday morning, Judge J. O. Lacroix heard several accused entering pleas of guilty to various offences, a few enter denials to the charges against them, and saw women burst into tears as he meted out stiff sentences to old offenders. It was a busy hour for His Honor, with no less than 20 accused appearing before him.
Stiffest sentence went to Lionel Gauthier. This prisoner, convicted of having stolen an automobile and of having kept it for several months in his possession, was sent to the penitentiary for two years. He had a heavy record against him and the court stated he could have no leniency for men of his type. Gauthier took the road to the cells without a murmur.
The next heaviest sentence was meted out to Roland Masse. Masse entered a plea of guilty to a charge of having assaulted a police constable. The policeman reported that he was on his beat in a public place and that the accused was making insulting remarks to various women passerbys. When the constable came to warn Masse, the latter struck him, this being the offence to which he pleaded guilty. He would not, however, admit his guilt in connection with his alleged insulting remarks. He will be tried on this charge on January 13.
A woman in the court room, presumably Masse's wife, went into hysterics as sentence was passed upon the prisoner. Bursting into tears.and sobbing loudly, she stuffed a handkerchief into her mouth and stumbled out to the corridor where she was taken in charge by a kindly constable.
Another woman sobbed hysterically as Judge Lacroix refused bail to William Britton and Thomas Russell, two youths, charged with the theft of $14 worth of coal from a C.N.R. freight car. They pleaded not guilty to the offence, and will stand trial on January 11. A titter went up among the lawyers and other professionals in the court room as Clerk Monaique. reading out the charge to the accused, got slightly mixed up and told them the accusation was "for having stolen coal from the Canadian-Russian railway." Rene Gauthier. K.C.. prosecuting counsel, objected to the formula. His objection was maintained and Clerk Monaique, a wide grin on his face, made his amendment.
Peter Trueby and Mike Glukitch. the next to appear, were also accused of stealing coal from the C.N.R. The amount represented $3 worth of combustible: pleading guilty the two men. with previous records against them, were sent up for six months each.
PLAGE LAVAL STORY. The next group of accused to appear was composed of five men for whom the police had been on the look out for some time. Leo Therriault, Arthur  Desmarais, Jean Lauzon, George Lauzon, and Joseph Renaud stood charged on two accusations of having stolen goods from the summer homes at Plage Laval, of prominent citizens of Montreal. All but Neron pleaded guilty, and sentences will be passed on January 13. Neron will stand trial on January I5. Goods stolen amounted to roughly $5,000, consisting of clothing, jewellery, fishing tackle, etc. Hon. Raoul Grolhe ami lion E. L. Patenaude were among the victims of this gang.
Henry Nobbs pleaded guilty to stealing two watches of a value of $50 and will be sentenced on January 13. Elie Lalonde, who entered a plea of guilty to an accusation of stealing a $25 watch at the point of a butcher's knife will be penalized tomorrow morning.
Joseph Masson, an old offender, pleaded not guilty to two charges of theft with effraction. He demanded bail in no uncertain terms. The judged looked up his record, and refused. Accused will be tried on January 18.
That was all. The court room was cleared. The usual Saturday morning drama was over for another week.

The Case of The Greatest International Heist
*this is my modification of The Einstein's Riddle.
It was just another fine cloudy day in Brussels, when suddenly the radio breaks the news that the world’s rarest gem, the Burmese Painite, was stolen from the city museum on the final day of an exhibition inviting hundreds of political leaders, Hollywood celebrities, and the rich 1% people around the world. Even PewDiePie and Zach King was there. Donald Trump and Justin Bieber, however, was not invited. Nobody knows why. But the Burmese Painite, it costs a freaking US $ 10.000.000!
After collecting information from the exhibition committee, the police have followed the trails of the thief into the 13th floor of a five-star hotel, three blocks downtown with five identical looking rooms. All five rooms on the hotel floor are rent by an all-women French professional security company, the PSC Pierre, for their guards. Every guard is tasked to take care one of the five rarest gemstones in the world, but the police do not have any access to the information since, weirdly, the company CEO is an AI. To keep things confidential, both the event organizer and the security company was using a double-blind standard operational procedure. Apparently, the security company that the committee hired was found being infiltrated by a terrorist organization that seeks to auction off the gemstone in the black market to fund the Japanese overthrow of Kim Jong-un.
We are competing with one other detective agency to solve the case. After several hours of doing some fancy Sherlock Holmes thingamajig in the headquarters office, everyone is being called to the hotel lobby to have a meeting, and the police told us everything they know about the guests, also from the manager and the housekeeping staff that cleans up the room. They also invited one cocky midget woman, who is a jewellery expert, to identify the gemstones in the exhibition.
Here are all the clues so far:
The company employs 5 professional security guards, with different nationality.
All five guards smoke different brands of cigars, noted from the cigar butts left in the ashtray.
All five guards drink different types of alcoholic beverages, seen from the branded bottles.
Each rooms have different carpets, claimed to be made from all natural materials.
The missing gem was replaced with a fake replica, so housekeeping might have seen it.
The Englishman slept in the room with Persian crimson carpets.
The Spaniard took care of the Australian Musgravite.
Haitian rum is drunk in the room with Moroccan olive carpets.
The Dane loves drinks Irish whiskey.
The room with Moroccan olive carpet is directly to the left of the room with Indian ivory carpet.
Dominican Montecristo smoker has the Chinese Jade.
Cuban Cohiba are smoked in the room with Libyan golden carpets.
The guard sleeping in the middle room drinks Italian wine.
The Norwegian lives in the first room directly beside the elevator.
The Swiss Davidoff smoker sleeps in the room next to the man with the Sri Lankan Taaffeite.
Cuban Cohiba are smoked next to the room where the Canadian Poudretteite is kept.
The Nicaraguan Perdomo smoker drinks Dutch gin.
The German smokes American Arturo Fuente.
The Norwegian sleeps in the room next to the room lined with Jordanian teal carpets.
The Swiss Davidoff smoker sleeps next-door to the guard who drinks Russian vodka.
We deduced that one of the guards of PSC Pierre has the Burmese Painite. The police cannot search all the rooms at once since it would disturb other guests. If they pick the wrong room, the culprit will know they are on his trail and escape the hotel with the loot. We mush finish this case today since the guards will check out from the hotel to leave the country at noon.
