Evaluation
Emily Rocks P&E and VL Combined Evaluation
Both modules Process and Enquiry and Visual Language have essentially opened my skillset, learning, working and understanding of the conceptual process of my making. I chose to follow the Stranger brief which was given through the Visual Language module, which I took into Process and Enquiry. With the help of different workshops such as: Print Making, Sculpture, Projection and Folds, I was able to produce a full body of work.
Firstly, during and after the workshops, I focused on sculpture, especially with clay. I started off for Process and Enquiry with creating a sculpture made out of features: eyes, noses, ears and mouths. I started to think of taking this sculpture further, but I changed that idea and instead developed it into another version of a collection of features. These are cube sections, which can be stacked, creating totems, I thought this would relate from my digital videos of how I create the face blobs, which is sections of different features.
For Visual Language I focused on paper folds. As a task I created paper forms in relation to our chosen brief. Using the features I created, I combined forms that gave structure and a 3D element. I then researched historical totems, as I really loved the design and structure elements of them. I collected cans, tins and bottles and as well my paper forms and cast them. Through that process my paper forms weren’t so stable, plaster leaked, the paper fell onto itself and the folds got lost. But because of this they came out with either own uniqueness. I then cast cans, I bent the can into its self, creating a form. After the plaster was set, I took away the metal and was left with the form. I did the same process with the bottles, and from that I started to combine them. Using PVA glue, I stacked them on top of each other. Because I cast a lot, if combined together the height would be too unstable, so I made separate totems.
I took this further with the paper forms for Visual Language and took photographs and created collages, developed with adding my feature digital images on top. From this I was able to develop my ideas and see what future work could become. Focusing on taking these into different processes and how I communicate my concept. It became evident that every material and process has its own identity.
Thirdly, I looked at text, video and sound. I started off simply by taking the words “ THE STRANGER” from the Visual Language brief. For Process and Enquiry taking the word “UNCANNY” which is a word from Uncanny Vally, which I think relates with the works I’ve been doing. I played around with text and recording myself glitching, layering and other techniques the text. The text I found was part of my stronger works and some I even developed into my screen printing and projection work. I then as part of my time-based, collected sounds from everyone and layered it on top of the process video of the head blobs.
Screen Printing was another focus, I played around with colours, imagery and different techniques. For Process and Enquiry I first used the head blob image, which took a few times to get onto a screen, but with played with the tones, scraping into the acetate and even just had an outline of the image, it came out well. I also took the digital text, I took the word “UNCANNY”, for Process and Enquiry, I transferred it into print-making and having either the text be a piece or an underly. I had the text printed twice, normal and backwards, I printed it in a way it layers on top of each other, creating a trippy effect. For Visual Language, because of the success of the text, I printed “STRANGER” from my digital text, the word simply comes from the brief, I did this with the same technique but just by itself, but I tried having it backwards, upside down and side by side which also worked well.
In developing my concept for the future, I’d like to experiment more with the things that came out successfully and that i enjoyed. Especially the text, it was something I had never gone into depth with and had to learn different formats and processes.
Overall, both of these modules have definitely developed not just my skill-set, but also my conceptual processes of working and thinking. Through different workshops, I was able to invest into having a better relationship with different processes and materials that contributed to the overall concepts.

Artist Statement
During my time in this project I thought about ways and things I never thought or done before. Keeping up to pushing boundaries not just in my work, but within myself. I like to work with a variety of mediums as new opportunities open up, using the simple ways like text or photographs, with an experimental approaches. I keep finding new ways of working and showing visually, into distorted forms and make them a reality. Overcoming making a natural form, from paper, photographs, text and simple materials and putting it in a way is disturbing, creating people to become disgusted, uncomfortable and uneasy. I like to push peoples emotions, it pushes myself and my work, I like to take it, develop it and make it. The journey is far from finished, pushing to better myself through, exploration, discovery and experimentation, which I feel can lead me to more interesting works.

Time Base Piece
This is the time base piece. From my process video of the collection of the head blobs and the audio file I found most successful.
I found this process video the most successful because, I was really drawn to how the sections of the face being cut out, where the picture of the person shows up and only apart of them is left. I also like the blending part from when the features coming together.
The audio was I found the most successful, it was the audio I originally had in mind and it came out the way I wanted. The contrast of the glitch, static and projection sound, and having a feel being anonymous, to then having my classmates audio on top being so exposing. But together it just adds to what the video is about. It’s weird, uncomfortable, anonymous but also exposing. And possibly keeping this on loop will add that too.

Audio
In this one, I done the complete opposite and took away the glitching, static and projection sound and just had the audio from my classmates. I done this my layering the audios after each other and on top. I feel it does the opposite from the last audio as it does’nt make it anonymous

Audio
For this audio, I stripped away the audio from my classmates, which left me the glitch, static and my projection video sound. I like this one, it makes the audio more anonymous, if layered over my process video it plays with that

Audio
In this audio, I collected more audio. I collected from videos from my work, more classmates and finding audio files. I feel like this is my most successful one just because its the audio I originally had in mind for my time base piece.

Audio
this was my first audio, I collected sounds of sneezing and from a classmate. I played around with these audios, reversing them, layering and stretching the audio, which changed the pitch

Projection Video Part 3
Using some astatate with just simply ink, I found this astatate, from the water marks it looks like a form and so id thought about how it look on the projector. What i found was most interesting was the camera angle. From seeing it on the screen, you can’t see what I’m doing and only can be seen on the wall after being projected. I find it becomes ghost like.

Projection Video Part 1
Using the projector, I displayed the two images of the head blob and the scull version. The distortion of the two coming together, where the image just becomes nothing and loses its qualities. I found it surprising successful as I really enjoyed the images coming together.

Image Transfer Head Blob
Developing from my head blob sculpture, I thought about creating a realistic version. From this I thought about image transferring my digital head blob images.
I started this process by creating a similar head blob to my original in the same shape but the opposite way. I then printed them both out, layered a lot of white paint onto canvas, stuck the image down and done an image transfer. I washed off the image by running under the tap and scrapping off the paper. After they dried, with the sewing machine, back to back I sew one side and then flipped from inside out. From this this created a crisp joint of the two coming together.
For presentation of the piece, I pinned both sides equally onto the wall. Which creates the 3D element

Collection of Features Totem Sculpture
Going from the head blob sculpture, my GIF video of the features coming together and with my artist research of Jonathan Baldock, i thought about creating a collection of broken down features.
I started with the eyes I moulded them to be able to be stacked, I then moved on to the noses, and lips which also can be stacked, but while thinking of how id present it, I really enjoyed them being falling over. I played around with the composition of how the features can be placed and this was the composition I drawn to the most. With having the features fallen over it creates a piece, that can be 360, that you are able to walk around and see different aspects and positions that you wouldn’t see if it was all stacked on to each other and it also creates the aspect you get from the process videos and GIF.

Time Base Development
From the first process video, i thought about a collection of these head blobs.
I’m really liking the selecting parts of peoples faces bits, i find them disturbing, yet satisfying.

Head Blob Development Prints
Going from how successful the text prints came out, It got me thinking of about simplifying the head blob image. I used the same colour tones for the background and the scull part, which i feel was my problem before because the scull was too strong in colour. I accidentally printed the outline the wrong way, which i then continued and layered it on top, but I’m glad it happened because i then feel these series of prints are their own and not exactly like the others

Text Development- Printmaking
Wanting to take my digital text into not just being digital but an actual physical piece. I took it into print making, i was really playing around with composition, but i knew i wanted something simplistic but bold. I started with simply having some with backgrounds and some not, i then took the text and prepared two separate screens, one with the text normal and the other backwards. From this i layered the text on top, on the side, different tones of colour and a bold colour.
The first one is the one I’m most drawn to, i think the simplistic feel to it makes the piece have a bold aspect, as well because of the ink being messed up it gave this painting feel which i really drawn to.
