Traintober day 25: distress signal
Belle: WHY IN THE WORLD DID YOU CALL THE SEARCH AND RESCUE CENTER WHEN THERE’S NO EMERGENCY?! YOU NEVER CALL THE EMERGENCY SERVICES IF THERE IS NO EMERGENCY!? WHY DID YOU CALL ME TO THE DOCKS WHEN THERE’S NO EMERGENCY?
Thomas: well, you see, there was but it kind of took care of itself so we don’t really need you, but trust us that we did have an emergency but now we don’t-
Salty: a huge flock of illegal Canadians invaded our shores, laid siege, and physically assaulted Porter.
Belle: what?
Thomas: he’s talking about them *points to a huge flock of geese on the dock*
The geese:

Thomas: the one that attacked Porter flew away. And every time we try to shoo them away, they come at us and nobody is able to get any work done because of the dang geese
Belle: I’ll go call the RAF.

I desperately need more botany/gardening/solarpunk/foraging posts that aren’t so fucking American-centric
“European plants are invasive” okay, in America— but which ones are invasive HERE, like are Spanish species invasive to England? Are French plants invasive to England??

A debilitating parasite that causes a fatal disease in fish has been confirmed in British Columbia for the first time, four months after a suspected case in the Rockies caused several bodies of water to be closed. Emerald Lake and several nearby lakes in B.C.'s Yoho National Park, roughly 175 kilometres northwest of Calgary, were shuttered after a suspected case of whirling disease was found last September. Parks Canada said on Friday that further testing confirmed the presence of whirling disease in Emerald Lake. It also confirmed the disease had spread to bodies of water in the Kootenay River watershed.

Canadians please don’t ignore this
I usually don’t make posts like this, but this is something that Canadians, LGBT or not, should know about. This internet bill is gonna cost so many problems if it become legal. Also if you’re not a Canadian but you know any Canadian(s), and you already don’t like bills like KOSA, please let them know about this post.
There is also this great video by this Canadian privacy lawyer explains the problems with Bill S-210 so well.

Canadian Goldenrod Part 1:
While the world’s finest athletes were going for gold in Paris at the 2024 Olympic games this summer, I was going for gold in my own garden. By “gold”, I mean this gorgeous Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) plant.
If there was a plant Olympics, Canadian Goldenrod could win a gold medal in the invasive species category. This large and in-charge plant has numerous attributes that enhance its successful invasion of new habitats. Canadian Goldenrod is a herbaceous perennial plant that can grow up to 6 feet (180 cm) tall, a height which gives its airborne seeds an advantage in travelling to new areas far from the parent plant. The plant propagates via underground rhizomes that produce vast genetically identical populations that can take over an area. This species will eagerly take over habitat disturbed by natural disasters like forest fires as well as areas disturbed by human activity before other plant species can establish a foothold.
A resilient plant, Canadian Goldenrod can thrive in a wide range of climates corresponding to the USDA hardiness zones 3 through 9. Even in its native habitat northeastern and north-central North America, the plant will form natural monocultures where it has out-competed the other indigenous plants.
What happens when this plant goes to compete with native plants in other parts of the world? Find out next time.
Please note: The large bushy plant I am hugging is the Canadian Goldenrod. The other yellow flowers are a different species called Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis).

Death Weekend (The House by the Lake, 1976)
"They'll go away."
"They won't go away! Can't you see that? They're not gonna go away. For God's sake, can't you guess what they're gonna do next?"
#death weekend#the house by the lake#1976#video nasty#canadian cinema#horror film#william fruet#brenda vaccaro#don stroud#chuck shamata#richard ayres#kyle edwards#don granbery#ed mcnamara#michael kirby#richard donat#denver mattson#al bernardo#roselle stone#elaine yarish#ivan reitman#slightly superior example of a subgenre that isn't truthfully my bag; rape and revenge films tend to hit me as tasteless and exploitative#(duh) but in a way that's more uncomfortable than it's worth. but.. I'm an idiot who's trying to watch all the video nasties and you better#believe there's a fair few of them on that list. this canadian offering is‚ like i said‚ a superior example: it's decently made‚ scripted#with intelligence and director Fruet approaches the violence with.. if not subtlety then a surprising lightness of touch at times#there's some restraint here‚ with much of the rougher stuff shot in such a way as to obscure or omit the truly objectionable#it's also interesting in how it establishes Shamata's character (who we might reasonably expect to be the heroic action figure in the#second half) as just another misogynistic creep‚ a manipulative womaniser whose creeping and voyeuristic tendencies make him little better#than the psychotic gang who stage a home invasion. truthfully Vaccaro can rely on nobody but herself in the fucked up situation that then#unfolds‚ and her consistent strength and unwavering determination are another fairly refreshing element of a troublesome film type

One of Scotland's most famous Pipers, Bill Millin was born on July 14th 1922.
Millin was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada to a father of Scottish origin who returned to Glasgow as a policeman when Bill was three.
He grew up and went to school in the Shettleston area of the city. He joined the Territorial Army in Fort William, where his family had moved, and played in the pipe bands of the Highland Light Infantry and the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders before volunteering as a commando and training with Lovat at Achnacarry along with French, Dutch, Belgian, Polish, Norwegian, and Czechoslovak troops.
There's not really a lot I can add to my previous posts so will leave it to Bill himself to tell you a wee bit more, like this wee snippet "Lovatt asked me if I would march up and down the beach playing 'Road to the Isles', which I did"
In another interview Millin told how even those that disliked the bagpipes, (yes there are some!) admired him, although one called him "a mad bastard"
